Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Oh now I'm just flat out day dreaming...

"The 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers not only repeat their 08' superbowl year but do It in flawless fashion. The first time since Don Shula's Fins went undefeated!"

Can't you just hear it now? A repeat, and a flawless road all the way there? We have the team, the depth, the coach, and now the schedule. Let's break it down week by week:

  • Week 1 - Steelers vs. Titans- Hey you Tenn teeth towel stompers! Welcome to Heinz Field. Our 2009 opener will be an all out slug fest with the memory of towel mockery still very fresh in many players' minds. This is the hump that just so happens to be our 1st game. This is the hard one. (please don't let Nate score on us!)
  • Week 2 - Steelers @ Bears-We just won our match against a rival. Now heading to Chicago to meet up with the Bears and their QB. This might still be an uneasy time for Cutler so we can only hope to make plays off his mistakes.
  • Week 3 - Steelers @ Bengals-Palmer is back with some new offensive weapons. You can give a Pinto a paintjob but it's still a pinto. Nuff said.
  • Week 4 - Steelers vs. Chargers- Hold on to your hats. We got the best of these fair weather ladies last year so they will be out for bragging rights. I'd love to see Troy snag another immaculate interception.
  • Week 5 - Steelers @ Lion- Haha.
  • Week 6 - Steelers vs. Browns-If we want to own Mangini like we've owned past Brown head coaches we'll have to show them once again and stake our territory in the AFC North
  • Week 7 - Steelers vs. Viking- I just don't believe they have the QB to pick apart our defense.
  • Week 8 - BYE-Perfect timing, although it would have been nice to play the ratbirds once and then taken a break. We will be fresh and have to be focused when we head up to...
  • Week 9 - Steelers @ Bronco- The Colorado Mts! The biggest joke this offseason has been Denver. The coach can't get a hold of his team and it looks as though they didn't draft well to their needs. I say we take this one quite easily
  • Week 10 - Steelers vs. Bengals-Wax on, wax off..
  • Week 11 - Steelers @ Chief- For some insane reason I think the Chiefs will not only win their division but put up one hell of a fight week 11. They have been snagging the best of the best in the past 3 drafts and now with Haley at the helm that Pitt attitude will come through.
  • Week 12 - Steelers @ Raven-WWIV. Although we conquered the purple Browns all three times last year, nothing is promised this year. Only that these Ravens are all sorts of pissed at us. They want this division title more than they want new colors. I don't want to even think about it till week 11 is over.
  • Week 13 - Steelers vs. Raiders- Remember the last time we played the Raiders? They were terrible then and we blew it. Well they're going to be terrible next season and we shouldn't blow it this time.
  • Week 14 - Steelers @ Brown-Man Genius has been scheming and Quinn has been slinging. Finally they put up a fight but a cool headed Ben leads us on a game winning drive.
  • Week 15 - Steelers vs. Packers- Not too sure on this one. The Packers are switching to a new 3-4 and might have it working pretty well come this late in the season. Pittsburgh makes the 3-4 look easy thanks to Dad.
  • Week 16 - Steelers vs. Ravens-Extra ambulances are brought in to the field. Hospitals open up vacancy and the Steelers put an asswhooping on the birds.
  • Week 17 - Steelers @ Dolphin-Sorry Mr. Brown, we may look dumb but your wildcat hocus pocus is going no where today. We are already talking and looking for the playoffs. Focused and cool as ever we finish it out with a win at Land Shark. Jimmy Buffet throws a concert and the fins dance and drink their sorrows away.

So now that we've attempted to analyze our coming competition, (not very well but an educated guess,) we can toss around the idea of going all they way and never going down.

I've been juggling this around in my head and have had my doubts from time to time. The biggest problem with that is that unlike the 07' pats, we don't cheat. But, what we do, is feed off negativity. How many times have the Steelers been underdogs this new millenium? How many times did they set out to prove those nay-sayers wrong?

Without tough losses we could take our team for granted and that could spell disaster. Our 05' run to Detroit was anything but easy. It was hard fought and being the final seed only motivated us to do what no one had done before.

Last year we were acknowledged as one of the best teams that couldn't ever stay on top. The team barely flew under the radar as the Titans stole the spotlight and the new face of Flacco drew some attention.

This year we will have a different look. A look of champions that every team will want to take down. With it will come huge motivation for any David that can kill our Goliath.

Mike Tomlin doesn't want to talk about repeats. As far as he's concerned he's not coaching the same team from last year. Mike Tomlin could be the deciding factor of us going all the way, going all they way undefeated, or not going anywhere.

It's a long way till the season starts, keep dreaming BTSC...

A pool table is fine, but coach, please don’t skip a practice to go watch a Will Ferrel movie. After the ‘05 SB win, the crew skipped a practice to see Talladega Nights. I’m not superstitious, but that was why we went 8-8 in 06!

I don’t know if he has a new movie coming out or not, but I calling a boycott on it anyway.

Ahh

Rose colored glasses predominate in the off season. They even make the rat birds look a little diferent than purple brownies.

Repeat is possible.

Really.
The difference fm 06 to now, 1) healthy 2) drafted I think well and 3) Tomlin.

There’s a different attitude prevailing in the ‘burgh. One of humbleness and we STILL gotta work, new season, new challenges….but that being said, if the O-Line works hard and FWP keeps up pilates, who’s to say we can’t repeat. All the puzzle pieces are there….if…they…just…keep…working. And pray everyone stays healthy.

Going into Arrowhead is no easy task even when the Chiefs are piss poor.

it wont be easy

The chiefs will be far improved & the steelers might be caught looking forward to next week against the ravens. But going into denver is also hard & they may have lost cutler, but orton isnt a joke and they were written off.

I think the "most likely difficult team to play that was a poor team last year" award should go to the bengals. its not just a "new paint job" for them. They’re getting back their probowl qb. They’ll have 2 healthy WRs & they’ll have a RB who actually started the season on their roster.
Now I’m not saying the team will be awesome, but they’re going to have a lot better this year (obv barring any injuries) than they did when we played them last year.

RIGHT ON

The Bungles always get up for division rivals. In addition to the reloaded offense they kept nearly the same defense that last year quietly ranked tenth. Also the Bungles often leap into a playoff spot after a dismal record the prior year.

With great expectations come great disappointments...

I’m not expecting failure, I’d just like to point out the higher you set a bar, the more painful the fall when trying to jump it.

I’m hoping for a solid record (11+ wins), a division title, and a playoff appearence. That’s all you can ask for, a shot to win it all. Give ‘em a shot to win it. I’ll take our guys versus anybody else’s, any day of the week. Be realistic, saying undefeated Superbowl Champions in May is crazy. It’s May… May. Has anybody even put pads on yet?

by NYSteelersFan4 on May 26, 2009 11:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In May...

That’s pretty realistic. When you look at the schedule… in May. Undefeated teams don’t come along often, making the case for an undefeated season, in any month (okay except January), is a low probability guess. In May. Just throwing one more in there… In May.

Pefrect season

Is a total waste of time.

Every team that’s come close has self-destructed.

Our goal is a SB. That will be plenty tough. At the beginning of the season there are 8-12 teams that have a shot. We are one of those teams.

Assuming no big injuries, continued great team culture, good development from our young players and a couple of breaks we will be in the running to play some very tough and meaningful games during winter. I would rather have a humble focused team that is ready to play those tough games then a team that is thinking about it’s legacy. The real legacy of this team will be beating Brady in the AFC championship game – then winning the SB. All the rest is meaningless.

by SteelerBuddha on May 26, 2009 11:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s a pretty good point. Winning a lot of games can get into a team’s head and contribute to their downfall. I think we’d have a better chance of winning if we went 14-2.

agree with all above that sb win is the true goal,

and that 16-0 is dreaming, but wouldn’t it be nice to see ben and a few other starters chilling in baseball hats on the sideline resting during that last game in miami while dixon and the tank end the season for us?

by phxsteeler on May 26, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather lose 3 and win the Super Bowl

than go 16-0 and lose the big game. Did Brady do that?

by fanofsteel on May 26, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe you guys misunderstood

I don’t expect this to happen. I think that the SB is the ultimate goal that the team should strive for. But, what if..? I’m just making a post so when it does happen I can say hey BTSC! I told ya so. hehe. And then i’ll say, Hey Malor! Where’s my damn x-box!?

Got a problem with Harrison, why not take it up with him? Oh you know why!

Arrowhead

is not as tough a task as it has been in the past. The Chokes D will continue to suck and the one year wonder at QB had a bad game against us even when he had Moss to throw to and a far better offensive line, compared to the Chiefs. I went two years ago to watch the Packers and there had to be at least 1/3 Packer representation in the stands. We are the only team that represents better than the Pack IMO, so I am hoping to see 40-50% of the seats filled by the Nation! We have a block of 15 tickets in corner of the end zone and only three of those spots are for Chief fans, so I am doing my part!
The best part of that day will be watching the Chief’s “fans” scurrying to the exits in the third quarter while listening to the overwhelming chants of “Here we go Steelers, here we go!!!!”

I wasn't hired for my disposition!

It doesnt really make a big difference how they get into the playoffs

This is a Jan/Feb team and we know it. Thats all I care about.

I personally doubt they will go 16-0, a probable reality is that somebody important misses a key game, and the tides of fate shall consume us for a week. I could see 14-15 wins though.

Knack

Steelers always have had a knack for playing down to the level of their competition. Fourth quarter comebacks are not the best way to win games.

by steelerstyle on May 26, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they did a much better job of this in the 08’ season

they struggled during Mike Tomlin first year but I think that was still hangovers from the cowher era.

I didn’t see that as an issue this season.

I'll drink your Milkshake, I'll drink it up!

DYMS That reply is for you too

AGREE

with DYMS on this…doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore…and hopefully it never will be again…..I can’t have another freaking Jets game like 2 years ago…that was pitiful and I was in NYC that day…all showing off in my Steelers gear. Stayed in my room @ hotel after halftime..no lie.

Tomlin’s who attitude does not allow for playing “down.”
At least imo.

Tomlinism's

That is true about last year. We did play well against poor teams & as I recall we played well after some important wins too. Two things to say

1. One year does not make a trend.

2. Still I am cautiously optimistic that Tomlin is adjusting the Steeler culture enough to prevent it.
Some of the BTSC favorite Tomlinism’s were about being hungry, this is a different team
than last year, ratbirds will win the division, under promise, & I’m already 3 weeks behind.

I tend to think that’s why the Rooney’s hired him; so the culture would change. Hard to believe but that would be an even better STEELER STYLE than what we have become used to.

NW DC

My brother lives near 16’th & R. I visit him a few weekends a year. He has been a fan of Steelers since elementary school. I laugh when he complains about the Redskin fans.

It drives him nuts how obsessed everyone in the city is with them especially since all the transplants that come in every four years.

Gurl you live in the burbs or downtown?

ive got no read on the pack, chi and minn. they could give us both trouble. could. when we meet it will be a matter of health as we play so late in the season. ben can’t survive that o-lne another year can he. he’s an escape artist but even Houdini got tangled. this will be a telling year for sweed. he can still hide behind ward and holmes in as pinch. a luxory we sorely don’t have at this point. we look to be a running team this year like every year.

we should rely more on the 3 headed monster (hopefully more ray rice) than we will our awesome receiving trio of mason (the man), clayton (unproven), washington (unproven cincy reject), williams (often injured/unproven). we will pretty much be the same team you whipped but with a more defined Flacco. is that enough to overcome your improvements? no. holmes will have a monster year. that SB TD boosted his confidence out of sight. we’ll need some breaks. ed reed and suggs need to step up like troy and your freak did. they made plays in the big games and our stars didn’t. against tenn. it was backup leonhard who saved us. our stars need to man up in the playoffs and thats were i tip my cap to pitt.
