SI Ranks "Best Backfields," snubs M. Moore.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/05/22/backfields/index.html
"Ranking best backfields in the NFL."

Only posting this here because I wanted to point out how when they rank the Pittsburgh Steelers, they are not including Mewelde Moore. They are listing other guys on other teams like Tashard Choice from the Cowboys, but no mention of Moore.

Event better, they wrote:

Parker missed five games last season with injuries and failed to average 3.0 yards per carry in five of Pittsburgh's last nine games. Then again, the Steelers also won four of those five.

Hmmmmm..... Are they seriously not going to write about the man that took the place of Parker for those five games to help us win four of them? Really?

Just noticed this after the post

The writer lists one of his measurements as:

If a team’s backup is an active ingredient in the mix or is arguably good enough to start for a number of other teams, that backup factored into the rating

Am I the only one who thinks Moore falls into the categories listed above? Gees, give the man some love.

When I say who dey, you say we dey.

I like Moore...

But I’d take Tashard Choice over him in a heartbeat. Not a knock on Mewelde, he played pretty well for us when we needed him, but he doesn’t start on any team in the league over what they have (and from some of the talk here, he is the 4th best RB on our own team), but I might be forgetting a team or two.

Tashard Choice has a pretty small sample size in terms of NFL production, odviously. But in his short time here are his averages: 5.1 yards per rush (92 attempts), and 8.8 yards per reception (21 receptions). He had a great college career, and in my opinion was way undervalued at the draft.

Tashard Coice rushed for 116 less yards than Mewelde last year, but on 48 fewer carries. Comparing the two, numbers wise, Tashard has the upper hand, when you average things out. He may not be the pass blocker Mewelde is, yet. But he is two years younger and in terms of body type, probably more of what we’d like to see, 5’9" 210. Mewelde is the same weight, but taller, thus having a higher center of gravity.

P.S.- These SI power rankings are BS anyway. With the exception of TB’s Graham and Baltimore’s McClain they don’t even mention a single FB, and neither of those two is really a FB anymore in the way they’re used. And as most of us can verify, a good FB makes aworld of difference in the running game. If you have the best FB in the league that should definately be factored in.

Nice Analysis, Theisman

Gee, I wonder if Choice’s better YPC had anything to do with the fact that his OL is about 100x better…

Naaaaaah, couldn’t be.

by JHolmes on May 28, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

Because when you catch the ball you always have your o-line in front of you, right. I could see that arguement for his yards per rush, but not yards per catch.

This just in, you can’t blame everything on our o-line. It’s not el nino.

by NYSteelersFan4 on May 28, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you have any analysis of the two, feel free to post that instead of an occasional snarky comment about what every one else said… Just sayin’.

I have no insightful analysis so I figured I would play the asshole (quite a stretch as you can see)

The season is pretty hazy for me right now anyway. I need to watch the DVD a few (hundred) more times.

Sorry, I get a little defensive when people compare me to one of my least favorite guys to listen to on TV. Didn’t mean to get pissy about it, just came out that way.

And I should know

that calling a football fan Theisman is like using a racial slur. Lesson learned.

I meant

YPC as yards per carry.

I have a lot more thinking to do before I can figure out how his yards per reception is the OL’s fault. Don’t worry though I’m sure I’ll get there.

M&M Gets no love

I think that Moore gets overlooked and has for his entire career. Personally I Am not sold on Choice having seen alot of him in college, just never felt all that blown away by the guy.

I love being a Steelers fan, Its like a gift from the man upstairs

Sharin' the man-love for Mewelde...

First off, how can you not love a dude named Mewelde? That’s some sweet stuff right there. Second, if you watch the game-winning drive in the Super Bowl again, you’ll see MM make an absolutely stellar blitz pick-up of Aaron Francisco on the 3rd and 6 completion to Santonio right after the two-minute warning. I mean, he steps up and flat-out stones the dude, giving Ben the space he needs to step into his throw (which is a dart, and needs to be since the coverage is tight. If Ben can’t step into that throw, the pass is broken up and it’s 4th and 6. And 4th and 6 right there is scary).

Anyway, those are the intangibles that writers who assemble rankings based largely on stats and reputations miss. As far as I’m concerned, let’s keep MM on the down-low. As Coach T says, better to under-promise and over-perform…

MM

is just one of those guys, no matter what they do, will always be underrated. I happen to love the guy. He is a vastly underrated runner. He may not have the exposion of FWP but the guy almost always makes yards, makes plays. Superb receiver, outstanding blocker (see SB reference above), ultimate team player, intelligent.

Imo, and were all entitled, there is no comparison betweem MM and Choice. Can’t really compare numbers to numbers b/c our OL was so porous for a large part of the year.

He is a winner, a guy that just consistently finds a way to contribute. He basically made the plays in OT v. Ravens to win the game. I think the guy needs more touches. Good things happen the more he gets the ball.

I hate that 90% of the Steelers “news” these days is SI and PFT ranking stuff.

Gotta be something though eh? Plus pittsburgh fans have long loved complaining why they don’t get the love nationally.

I "heart" Mewelde too

He should get some love. I’d definitely give Mewelde love for everything he did last season.
He produced, for the most part, when needed.

Oh, and can I raise my hand on the “who’s sick of power rankings?” question.

SICK of it….really.

That whole article is a mess

How do you rank a “backfield” by including QB’s and RB’s? That’s a messy task to begin with. Look at the Jets…..Rock solid backs in T Jones, L Wash and newly added S Greene, but nothing proven at QB, so they are put at 25….behind the Broncos?

And I really don’t see how adding an aging Fred Taylor (33) and a yet to be re-established Tom Brady validates them at the number 4 spot.

And I agree with Snowballz, inconsistency on listing the parts. No mention of MM but they have 3 QB’s listed for the Bucs and only mention Lendale White in passing (15 TD’s last year).

by jharmon64 on May 27, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s because lendale white is not worth mentioning.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

by steelguy99 on May 27, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ummmm

Can we say “some of the best hands?” I think Westbrook and LT are at least as good if not a little better. MM is good enough that we shouldn’t have to manufacture “he’s the best at this” type of stuff to validate his spot on our roster.

Moore Vs. Choice

I re-watched the game against Cincinati yesterday and I’m a big M$M fan.
in 2008:
Moore has 908 total yards to Choice’s 657 Total Yards
Moore has 6 TD’s compared to Choice’s 2.
Moore continues to be one of the most undervalued backs in the NFL.

by fanofsteel on May 27, 2009 6:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thank the Lord he's undervalued.

And let’s hope he stays that way.

DOH

Moore is an important cog to the Steelers run game. He is a solid runner but most importantly he is a dependable back up and third down back. Moore picks up the blitz better then most on third downs and is a great reveiver out of the backfield as well.

The Steelers always get snubbed by the media though. Unless they are caught smoking weed or tell the President to piss off, the media ignors them for the most part.

Makes one wonder why there is so many bad guys in the NFL. Can’t be because they are the only ones who get attention can it?

Its said the Bungals and Cowgirls get so much more press and they have not done crap in many years but the Steelers win two Championships in four years and all we hear is how bad the OL is or if the guys screw up.

More positive stories by the media would equal a more positive view of the league. Stop giving the bad boys all the press and start giving it to those who earn it.
