BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- Big Ben is Ready for More Edition
IX-As a kid Ben Roethlisberger idolized and attempted to emulate John Elway, but at the age of 27 he has already tied Elway's number of Super Bowl victories. Ben has yet to reach his prime and Mike Tomlin is confident that he will grow as a player and will do the things it takes to get better as a football player. In Roethlisberger's five seasons he already has 19 game winning or tying comebacks, and could be on pace to match Elway's record of 47.
X- Tragedy struck the Dallas Cowboy organization this weekend when the practice facility they were using collapsed and injured multiple members of the organization and one scout as a result is permanently paralyzed from the waist down. For an organization that remains one of the most profitable and solid organizations in professional football, it seems that a greater emphasis should have been placed on the players' and staffs' safety in the event of such inclement weather.
XIII- In between mini-camps, training camps and other offseason workouts many Pittsburgh Steelers find ways to give back to their communities. Willie Parker and Lamar Woodley are both doing so this summer with football camps that give back to their hometowns. Both have made it known that they wouldn't be where they are today without the support of their communities. Willie Parkers camp will be held on Saturday June 20th in Clinton, NC, and Lamar Woodley's camp is in Saginaw, MI on June 13th.
XIV- Some interesting stuff from a recent interview with Joe Paterno about the possibilities of the Big Ten expanding from 11 teams to 12 or more, since it is required to have at least 12 teams in a conference to be eligible to have a conference title game. Among the teams Paterno listed as possible targets were Big East schools Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Rutgers.
XL- First round draft pick Ziggy Hood answered 5 questions from ESPN's James Walker. My favorite was probably what he thought his hometown was particularly known for, "We had [professional wrestler] Terry Funk originate from Amarillo. But other than that, it's nothing but tumbleweeds and boots." The other questions seem to reinforce the maturity that the Steelers organization has been preaching about the former Missouri standout that graduated in three and a half years.
XLIII- Mike Bires of the Beaver County Times is confident that Lawrence Timmons is ready to step in and play, and he's not the only one; Jamer Farrior is also excited about Timmons' potential for great things on the field. Farrior said to reporters "Lawrence is a good linebacker. He's going to be one of the real good ones once he gets his stuff down. He's one of the best athletes on the team."

Ziggy
This kid impresses me everytime he gets interviewed. Not only is he a good athlete, but he seems to have his head on straight with a good amount of intelligence in a league where that falls by the wayside.
Yep, older picture
Guys, pretty sure this is a picture from his training preparing for his rookie season. The Steelers guide still list him at his rookie weight of 234 lbs., but I bet he will play this year close to 245 lbs. and be even more explosive because he thoroughly knows the D now. We’ll just have to see how he handles the run on 1st and 2nd down, but I think he’ll be up to the task. And the dude is only 23 years old.
Timmons tipped us off on the type of player that Tomlin wants for his system and Ziggy further illustrates that as well — versatile, explosive with the potential to gain strength and muscle. I think we might even see the trend continue with 3-4 DE’s for our D that might not be as big as those we’d usually go after before but who are great athletes with the ability to get bigger and do more than 2-gap. Tomlin loves speed on both sides of the ball and I’m all for it as well.
The most encouraging thing about Ben and the organization is that Colbert & company are making a conscious effort to give Roethlisberger new weapons every year. M. Wallace, the Tank, D.J. Johnson, Sean McDonald and, hopefully, prayerfully, upgrading the OL this year will all make Ben’s life a little bit easier.
Also, am I dreaming, or is this potentially the deepest and fastest team that Tomlin has had thus far in his 3 years?
Potentially the fastest, but not the deepest. The losses of Nate Washington and Bryant McFadden mean that this team won’t be quite as deep. I’m not saying that Sweed and Gay won’t step up, I think they will, but that the depth behind those guys is less now than what is was.
I too like the emphasis on speed on the defensive side. I just hope he doesn’t take it too far when figuring out who to replace Hampton with.
God
I can not wait to watch Timmons play in the future. Datruth, agreed, he’s going to weigh in over 240 for sure, yet I think he’ll be even more explosive off the snap, close out better, play more instinctual and just dominate. I can not freaking wait. May not max out this year, but sheesh, these next five years are going to be amazing to watch him.
...and if he doesn't pan out..
..he would do great working at a muffler shop.
Roethlisberger should have some huge seasons ahead..
One of these days the light will go fully on for him, and the club is accumulating some top drawer skill players for him to work with. Heath Miller and Santonio Holmes were the top players at their position in successive drafts, Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed arguably so. Matt Spaeth is a solid young backup, and I have high hopes for Mike Wallace and David Johnson out of this year’s draft.
Wallace had the best 10 and 20 yard splits of anyone at the combine (better than anyone from last year as well) and his “explosion” numbers were top of the class. Once he learns the routes and picks up a few pointers on how to run them, he should be a weapon. Johnson is similarly quick off the line in relation to his size. He has exceptionally long arms and huge hands to offset lack of height, and is already a good enough blocker to earn playing time.
Quote that struck me
I may not be the biggest, strongest, fastest guy out there. But I’m going to give everything I got, and I won’t ever quit on a play.
This quote struck me because I was watching the “In Their Own Words” on the Steelers of the ‘70s and Joe Greene said almost the same thing. I’m not going to start comparing Ziggy to Mean Joe, but to hear a similarity in attitude and drive is certainly promising, IMO.
