Larry Foote Officially Released
No really, this time it is official. Unfortunately, the steelers were unable to exchange Foote for a draft pick. This may be because no one offered a pick good enough, or because the steelers were just being a swell organization and letting Foote go wherever he chooses for a new contract.

That no one would give up even a 7th rounder for Foote because of his contract. Sucks I though we could maybe squeeze a second or third rounder our of New England.
It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

May be a strike of Tomlin or is he taking options for the 2010 draft?
For shure he´s working to pick last and get ahead over that draft.

Savings at $2.88M, so who else should get extended?
Welcome to the L. Timmons, K. Fox and Donovan Woods era at inside linebacker in Pittsburgh. Tomlin has what he wants now — including Farrior, 4 ILBs that can play all 3 downs on the field and rush the passer. Consider K. Fox the “third starter” at ILB and Woods as the special teams player who will bust a few heads on his way to waiting his turn for a spot in the rotation.
This should also open up a spot or two for LBs on the practice squad. And also, with the team redoing Ward’s numbers ($7.8M cap hit this year with a $5.8M base salary before the extension) coupled with freeing up another $2.9M with Foote’s release, how do you think the team should prioritize extension talks and who should back up their truck first?
Here are the cap hits and base salaries for important Steeler vets in the last year of their deal:
LT Max Starks – $8.451M cap hit, $8.451 base salary
NT Casey Hampton – $6.652M cap hit, $3.075M base salary
DE Brett Kiesel – $4.998M cap hit, $3.25M base salary
TE Heath Miller – $2.41M cap hit, $800,000 base salary
FS Ryan Clark – $2.413M cap hit, $1.7M base salary
K Jeff Reed – $1.958M cap hit, $1.375M base salary
I didn’t include Willie Colon because, ugh, I don’t think he is worth including. Unless he is a whole lot better guard than he is RT, then I’m not hoping he is long for the Burgh.
Thoughts?

With the exception of Starks, I don’t think extending any of those players is a big priority. Hampton isn’t worth a $6M+/yr contract anymore, and Keisel wouldn’t be a starter in 2010. We have another year to tender Miller and I seriously wonder whether he’d make more (and play more) elsewhere anyway. I could take or leave Clark, although he’ll probably stick around for cheap. Obviously Reed is a priority, but he’s a kicker.

Hampton is not worth that money, but even if he was the DT franchise tag is less than his current cap hit. Ultimately I think that will be the way the steelers go if they can’t get a cheaper, several year deal done with the snackster.

I think the Steelers should sign Starks to something like a 5 year contract and same for Miller. I’d also like them to at least try to extend Hampton and Clark for 2 or 3 more years. Hampton, obviously, at less than what he makes now. Those guys are important and there isn’t anyone on the roster that can replace them right now. Extending them gives the team the next couple of drafts to find their replacements.

They ususally pick up a free agent of similar abililty...
..to fill the spot for less money. McFadden was replaced by Ratliff, Washington by McDonald, there isn’t a huge difference talent wise one way or the other. It won’t be that difficult to find someone similar to Foote in free agency if they are so inclined.

Good lord!
You’re right. His roster page hasn’t been updated since the 2007 season. My bad.
Still, he went 51 games straight through 2007, including two full seasons as a starter. No, he’s not an all-star player, but he has been dependable.

Can we get anymore signing?? i would like some ILB depth , bring in a VET

Lawrence Timmons & the depth chart
Let’s hope that Lawrence can stay healthy! He’s a stud in the making but if he gets hurt…Wonder if we even discussed an inside backer (Malauga, Laurenitis and a few more good ones in Rnd 3 & 4)) during the draft knowing that Foote was gone?
by 21Clemente on May 4, 2009 6:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ILB depth already on roster
The Steelers didn’t draft an ILB because they already have K. Fox, D. Woods, and A. Harrison competing for two spots. They signed a couple of rookie free agents, but they obviously feel that they have enough talent to go fwd without Foote. Besides, I don’t know if there is a veteran out there that I would want. Remember, whoever it is would have to be a good special teams player, and I doubt if that person is better than D. Woods right now or has his upside and price tag — very cheap.

What I find funny was there was a chiefs fan on here saying how they’d be happy to take Foote off our hands. Meanwhile, they let Fox go and we picked him up. Care to compare salaries?
Several years ago Fox had 44 tackles and a sack for the chiefs playing on a much worse defense. That was two years ago, and Fox has assuredly improved to the point where he is very likely to be able to be able to fill in for Foote.

Whoops, sorry, 52 tackles (44 solo, 8 assist) in 4 games started.

by steelguy99 on May 4, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And while I’m being helpful, the 4 games Fox started:
9 tackles (6 solo, 3 assists)
8 tackles (8 solo)
7 tackles (6 solo)
12 tackles (8 solo), 1 sack
Compared this with Foote’s most productive year in 2005 and his best stretch of games:
12 tackles (5 solo, 7 assists)
5 tackles (4 solo)
7 tackles (6 solo)
11 tackles (10 solo)
Larry’s average for that year of 102 tackles was 6.3 tackles a game. Fox’s admittedly limited portfolio contains 9 tackles a game. Anyone who doesn’t think Fox can fill in for Foote is fooling themselves. The only reason I mind losing Foote is because of depth. After Fox who can fill in? With Foote around we had a very deep set, but you can’t have it all nowadays in the NFL.

I agree that Fox should fill in nicely. But Larry was playing behind a line that moves laterally and stops the runner before he reaches the linebackers. Can we say that about the Chiefs? I mean, even Farrior hasn’t put up an average of nine tackles per game.
by Varmint on May 4, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not saying that Fox will be better than Foote, but I am saying that he has shown ability when given the chance. Will he be able to get 9 tackles if he ever fills in on the steelers? Unlikely, but the fact that he HAS in a system that potentially relied upon him to do it is promising.

I do think he could be better than Foote (and I like Foote). I just don’t think his work with the Chiefs is a good indicator for what he’ll do with us.

How many tackles did James Harrison have with the Ravens?
by Varmint on May 5, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stop making ridiculous arguments, especially when Harrison never played in a single game, hmmm?
I can find a few thousand people for you who never made any tackles that never amounted to anything. I can find a few thousand people for you who made a few tackles and never amounted to anything. I can probably find quite a few who managed to average 9 tackles over a 4 game stretch and never amounted to anything. I’ll take an ILB that averaged 9 tackles a game in limited playing time over one who averaged 2 over one who averaged 0. And if you wouldn’t, you’re just being ornery and silly.

Settle down
I didn’t think this would be difficult to grasp, given that even you had to qualify the basis for this claim.
Fox’s admittedly limited portfolio…
All I’m doing is pointing out that his portfolio with the Chiefs is so limited, it ain’t worth talking about -statistically irrelevant would be the proper term. You’ve selected only a four game sample and they were with a completely different team. For comparison purposes, that’s hardly worthy of mention. I mean, why not go back to their college days and compare those? (Please don’t. It’s useless.)
by Varmint on May 7, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh, we just disagree. You think it is completely irrelevant, I don’t.
If Fox started 4 games and gained 0 tackles, that’s a problem. You are insinuating that averaging 0 tackles a game is just as good as 9, because it was years ago on another team and only for 4 games. I disagree.
Stats are qualified all the time, this doesn’t make them irrelevant. The only reason Byron is getting a shot at starting elsewhere was because of his admittedly limited profile this year.

How are Foote's cover skills?
Indy’s interest has me puzzled. Indy is set for a starter at MLB (and I doubt Foote can cover well enough to play the deep middle that a Tampa-2 MLB is responsible for). He’d probably be a SAM in Indy if it’s true they want him. SAM is the least cover intensive spot, but he’s still going to be asked to do quite a bit in coverage.

He’s awful at coverage. His recognition is fine, but he’s slow and doesn’t change direction all that well. I’d say SAM is the only position he could play in the 4-3, but he might be a good fit as a 2 down run stuffer. He’s pretty good at taking on blocks and plugging holes – at least he was behind a 340 lb NT. I doubt he’s going to get a huge salary, and he could probably tell Peyton how to pwn our defense (not that he needed help last year).

the 8th LB on the team up for grabs
One of the great things about this organization is they usually have players in the pipeline ready to step up as well as bringing in a veteran to compete for the spot. For this 4th spot at ILB, they have Donovan Woods competing with a veteran who was on injured reserve this past year, Arnold Harrison. I don’t know if they will bring in another veteran, but the team must feel pretty good about the LB position as a whole to not spend any draft picks on it.
Where most teams are worried about filling starter positions, we here worry about the 8th or 9th LB on the team. Got to love such a great organization and scouting department.
I don’t begrudge Foote for wanting to go somewhere else, put up big numbers while being a 3 down player, and then cashing in next year. He might only have one big contract left before he hangs it up. He just wouldn’t have been a 3-down LB under Tomlin, so both sides get to move on.

Foote is straight f'ing retarded
He is honestly an idiot. I liked the guy a lot and I’m glad he helped out how he did.
But he is going to play for Detroit. That is not only career suicide but a waste of time and energy and its only going to make him sad.
Imagine telling your grand kids you left the best team in NFL history for the worst all because you wanted to play more.
Lame.
But hey good luck

He’s leaving the best team in NFl history because he’s not good enough to start for us, despite being in the middle of his prime. Maybe Detroit is a good place for him…

Interesting point being brought up on nflfromsidelines comments. If you want to be a 3-down player, than be a better player, don’t try to cancel a contract you agreed to because you can’t cut it anymore.

I don’t hold it against him, though. It was in both our interests to part ways. It would have been nice to keep him as a 5th LB, but not at close to $3M.
