The Steelers 2009 53 man Roster (my Opinion)
Well guy im going to give this a shot, and i will get to see how accurate this is on gameday. Here it goes.
Offense:
QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Dennis Dixon, Charlie Batch
Yep the #1 spot is a lock, but i think there will be a very nice competiton during training camp for the #2 spot.... I think that Dennis will win the spot because of his playmaking ability and he is very athletic. Also Charlie is has almost no mobilty and if you put him behind our o-line he is going to get smacked around like a ragdoll, this will also tempt the defense to blitz right up the gut... in my opinion this is currently the major weak point of our o-line. Putting Dennis at #2 also allows us to bring him into the game in wildcat formation and using him as a slash player. Theres my thoughts on the QB situtation.
RB: Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Melwelde Moore
The Rb situation will be an interesting one this year.... I think that if Willie can stay healthy this year he will maintain the starting spot even though there is a 1st round pick in the wings.... If willie gets injured again this year (god forbid) then i think Rashard will step in and be very productive. Also we have Melwelde, a very reliable hard working guy that will be our 3rd down back, our best catching guy out of the backfield also. Theres my thoughts on the RB situation.
FB/HB: Frank Summers, Sean Mchugh
Well i am estatic about the Frank the Tank Summers selection and i think he will immediately make an impact. I think that Frank will step in to that short-yardage situational back and be very impressive. I also think that we will use him at ends of games to beat the defense up and be a bruiser. If you noticed, Carey Davis is not on the roster, well i think its the end of the road for him. I think that he is an average blocker at best and can do anything will the ball in his hands, even though he was a decent ST player ,, i think that Frank can take his spot and play good special teams also (if you look at the video of him on youtube you will see what i mean hehehehe). I Also have Sean Mchugh at Fb/Hb because of his good blocking abiltiy. Theres my thoughts on the RB/HB situation.
TE: Health Miller, Matt Spaeth
Well Health Miller in my opinion is probably the most complete TE in the league, great blocker and very good Pass catcher if you actually throw him the ball :P. So the #1 is a definate lock. I think that Matt Speath is a very below average blocker and at best and average catching TE. I think if Matt can work on his technique and study hard he can improve. I think Matt will have to be on the lookout for DJ Johnson our 7th round pick because of his very good blocking ability. Also seeing as we barely run any I-form sets , the TE blocks are very important. Theres my thoughts on the TE situation.
WR: Hines Ward, Holmes, Shaun Mcdonald, Limas Sweed, Mike Wallace
I think that the #1, and #2 spots are a lock, i think that Hines will go us another solid season (about 85 rec, 1000-1200 yrds) and this will be Santonio's real coming out party. I expect i big big season with about 1100 and will be OUR playmaker (just stay of the weed buddy). The very intruging thing bout the Wr situation the the #3 and #4 spots, i think Shaun will be a very solid target (poor mans wes Welker) and will hold that #3 spot. I think that Limas will improve this year but will not be ready to take hold of that spot and he will get it next year. Now i think Mike Wallace will be our KR from day one and instantly give us an upgrade from our 240 lbs backs last year (AKA Gary Russell/Carey Davis) and hopefully can get on the field and make big plays with his shear 4.28 SPEED.
LT: Max Starks, Jason Capizzi
Dont got much to say about the Left Tackle situation but Max will win the job seeing we have no guys to overtake the job and he is making a whopping 8.75 million dollars a year...Damn.
LG: Chris Kemoetu, Trai Essex
I think that Chris is going to improve a lot this year and try to help us forget about Alan faneca, we gave him a pretty juicy contract and i hope he repays us with a solid season. For trai i think he can pretty much play all around the o-line and can be plugged in for any spot when needed.
C: Justin Hartwig, AQ Shipley
Well Justin was probably our best O-lineman and there is no doubt if he will win the job or not, and dont be mistaken by his 8 and half sacks allowed last year. The interesting guy to watch is AQ, i think that this guy will be the backup centre and will open a lot of eyes during pre-season and training camp. This guy just knows the game and will show everybody why he was the best centre in college last year and why he deserved to be picked higher. In my opinion AQ will be starting in 2010 and Hartwig wont be resigned.
RG: Craig Urbik, Darniel Stapleton
This is going to be the most interesting position battle to watch in the pre-season, i think that in the end Craig will end up with the starting role and will have a solid rookie season. Darniel will be the reliable backup.
RT: Willie Colon, Tony Hills
Willie will win the spot beccause of his experience and unfortunelty will be our starting right tackle. I am very hopeful that Hills can strive to be our starter in 2010 and will work hard to reach that goal. I hope that Colon can try to listen more to Ben in the huddle so he doesn't false start every game.
Defense:
LE: Aaron Smith, Travis Kirschke, Evander "Ziggy" Hood
Aaron Smith continues to be the most underrated player on our defense and is a great player with a lot of heart. We found this out when we lost him in the 07 season and when he played even though his kid was very sick. Travis Kirschke continues to be a solid backup and can start a couple games when needed, he just posted the best season of his career and i expect him to play backup to both Left end and right end. I think that we will put in Ziggy on certain passing downs because of his pass rushing ability and his abilty to crash the pocket.
DT: Casey Hampton, Chris Hoke
Casey is the one of the most important parts of our defense IMO because of his ability to bring in double teams and allow the LB to run freely behind him. Even though his production is decreasing each year he is still one of the best defense tackles in the league. Chris Hoke is an awesome backup and could defineatly start for most teams in this league, Casey is due to miss a couple games this season and Chris always plays very well in his absense (in the 2004 season and this past season).
RE: Brett Kiesel, Travis Kirschke, Evander "Ziggy" Hood
Brett will play as the our starting defensive end and will play like his usual self. For the other postitons just look above, at the LE.
ROLB: James Harrison, Bruce Davis, Andre Frazier
James Harrison will continue to tear this league apart and i have a feeling he will have a better 09 season racking up about 20 sacks, not much more to say. Bruce Davis will become a very good special teams player and will become a reliable backup and will show the promise when we picked him in the 3rd round. Frazier will stay as our ST Captain and wont see the field much this year.
MLB: James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, Keyanor Fox, Donovan Woods
James Farrior will stay himself racking up about 100 tackles and somehow will be a probowl caliber even though he is an "OLD" guy in NFL terms. Lawrence Timmons is going to explode and will make us forget very veryyy quickly about the loss of Larry Foote and will be one of the most athletic linebackers we have had in years, hes just going to being a flat out playmaker. Keyanor Fox was a great additon last year and i love that we resigned him, anyways i think he will be a reliable backup and if you look at his stats in KC when he started he player very well , will about 8-10 tackles a game on a very bad defense. Nothing much to say on Donovan Woods, but i hope he doesn';t get hurt again.
LOLB: Lamarr Woodley, Arnold Harrison, Patrick Bailey
When people double-team deebo , woodley is unstoppable and vise-versa. There will be just no way to block this duo and we will continue our reputation as BLITZBURGH, also if teams concentrate to much on the outside, we have one of the best blitzing Inside linebackers in the NFL in Lawrence timmons. Anyways not much more to say, dont no much about the other two guys, but Bailey was one of our top 3 special teamers.
CB: Ike Taylor, William Gay, Deshea Townsend, Keewan Ratliff, Joe Burnett
Ike Taylor will continue to be one of the shutdown corners in this league and if he can catch some balls this year , other people will notice this. I think that William Gay will have an awesome year and will show people why we didn't resign Bryant Mcfadden. Deshea will stay age-less and will win the Nickel Back spot and will keep giving us that veteran presence in the secondary. I think that the 4th spot will be between Keewan Ratliff and Joe Burnett, I expect that keewan will be on the field more because of his veteran experience and i think Joe will be our starting PR
FS: Ryan Clark, Tyrone Carter
Ryan Clark is also a very underated guy on our defense, i think that he gives WR a lot to think about when they are crossing the middle :P, (ask Wes Welker and Willis Mcgahee) and he is also very very good against the run, watch the giants game from the last season and you will know what i mean (b4 he got hurt). Tyrone Carter will win the backup spot because of his experience and our lack of depth.
SS: Troy Polamalu, Ryan Mundy
Well Troy will continue to be his old-self and will continue being IMO the best safety in the league, He is great against the pass and makes plays with the ball in his hands, he is also one of the best blitzing safetys when we actually blitz him and is awesome against the run. Ryan Mundy will impress people and will be able to fill in if Troy ends up getting hurt sometime ( TROY PLEASE DO THAT THING YOU DID LAST OFF-SEASON, I BELIEVE IT WAS IN CALIFORNIA).
K: Jeff Reed
Spikey will continue to make clutch kicks for our football team and will definetly win us a couple of games. One of the best kickers in the league.
P: Daniel Supelveda
Can't wait to see him on the field for the first time , it was a nightmare when mitch or ernster would go on the field haha. Hopefully he is all healed up and he can stay injury free.
LS: Greg Warren,
Hopefully Greg Warren can stay healthy, thats all i got to say.
Well there it is guys, i hope you enjoy, Any Thoughts??

just a few...
First…I count 25 on offense, 25 on defense, and 4 on special teams, which totals 54 (unless I’m missing someone). But in reality it’s no big deal. After all, with all the milling around on the sideline during a game, who has time to count. (Coach Tomlin would have to stick with 53 if we play the Patriots. I’m sure Belichick would make the effort.
Other than that, I predict additional rookies will make the roster, specifically Ramon Foster at O. Tackle, a new tight end (if one of the rookies shows he can catch AND block, Spaeth is in trouble), and a new linebacker (maybe two).
On the cusp, I’m intrested to see how Mike Reilly works out as a QB. If Dixon moves to number two ahead of Batch, would Charlie want to stay on as #3? Or would he retire, become a coaching assistant, and open a spot for a bright new talent? Ditto, I’m looking forward to hearing camp reports concerning R/B Isaac Redman and RB/RS Stephen Logan.
The competition for kick off and punt returns could be brutal. Wallace returns kick offs. Logan returns punts. Burnett returns both (and his K/O return average was better than Wallace’s). If someone really stands out in camp – such as Redman, Logan, or Reilly – I wonder whether Coach Tomlin will juggle the roster to keep them near the fold.
yeah he can come in at either spot if necessary

i agree man, but we haven't really seen these rookies, so i cant make those kind of predications
but for sure there will be a couple of more roooks that make this roster, im also pumped about the KR situation, especially logan. Reports have said he is extremely fast and small, almost indentical to Darren Sproles.

1000 yrd for Hines: 1400 for Holmes?
Do we pass that much??
This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.
Nope
I think a grand for Santonio and 800-900 for Hines. Im still expecting Limas to be the number 3, im happy with the Shaun McDonald signing, but am not expecting him to be anything more than a number 4

Ah
As much as I like Sweed there is still a slight chance that McDonald beats him out of the 3rd spot. Other than that, I like those numbers, as long as Sweed gets a couple TDs and say about 500ish yards if he starts, I’m good.

Well we have in the last couple of seasons, and if our running game doesn't improve it will stay that way
bbut i agree i dropped holmes numbers to about (1000-1200) yrds good point

I forgot about him hehe, i put him in there instead of Keenan Lewis
But i will keep Joe burnett because i think he will be a ST stud,, cuz of his returning ability and his kickoff coverage ability

I adjusted my roster
after your comments Shake…I moved Bruce Davis from the Practice Squad to the main roster so we don’t lose him. I’m not down on him, I just don’t know how he fits into our team. He would start on the Browns. (BTW, I received your email yesterday, thanks)
Thoughtful discussion with a sense of history
practice squad eligibility
might be a factor for some of these guys. I think it’s capped at 3 years.
Capizzi should be entering year 4. Not sure if his being on IR allows him to stay longer.
Paxson was on the roster for some of last year also. Not sure how many games.
Good pt.
I was wondering about that myself, but too lazy to actually look up the rules.

my guess
Qb (3) Ben Dixon Batch
Rb (4) Fwp Mendehhall Memo Logan
FB (1) Summers
WR (5) Ward Holmes Sweed Mcdonald Wallace
TE (3) Miller McHugh Spaeth
OL (9) Starks Kemo Hartwig Stapleton Colon Urbik Hills Essex Shipley
DL (7) Smith Hampton Keisel Kirschke Eason Hoke Hood
LB (9) Woodley Farrior Timmons J Harrison Fox Davis Bailey Korte Frazier
CB(5) Taylor Gay Ratliff Madison K Lewis
S (4) Troy Clark Mundy Townsend
Sp (3) Sepulveda Reed Estermeyer
Practice Squad – Reilly QB, Roy Lewis CB/S, Capizzi OT, RaShonn Harris DL, SHerrod TE, OL Foster, LB Woods, Baker WR
Ryan Mundy
Love it! Hope you’re right, 2005. He came from WVU, but transfered there from Michigan where he started. Solid guy. Good value.
Still no love for Ra’shon Harris, anyone? He would seem to be destined for the PS, but Kirschke is getting awfully old. I’m taking Harris over him at the bottom of the depth chart.
Who knew?
My random thoughts
1. WR’s Hines, Holmes, McDonald, Sweed, Wallace sounds like a very exciting group!!…good mix of youth & experience. Really could be the best group, top to bottom, we’ve had in a long time!! Wow, that group looks good, doesn’t it?
2. QB free agent, Mike Reilly, could be a real sleeper…diamond in the rough? Practice squad this year, active roster next year to compete with Dixon for #2 spot. I have a good feeling about this kid.
3. Another sleeper? Free agent OT R. Foster from Tenn. Practice squad this year, primary backup next year?
4. I really like TE/FB McHugh. I think he is vastly under-rated at both positions. Will be a valuable role player in 2009.
5. Spaeth. I hope 7th round pick TE Johnson blocks as well as advertised. I’ve had enough of Spaeth’s awful blocking and mediocre receiving. Too tall to get good leverage blocking and too easy of a target to tackle. Bust as a 3d round pick…move on.
6. Legursky. Could really develop as a backup C/G this year. Big, strong kid with great mobility. Seems like we have some good potential youth on OL: Legursky, Hills, Capizzi, R. Foster, Shipley. If we can hit on 2 of these guys it will be a nice boost to our depth.
7. Summers. Great opportunity for him to earn a spot as short yardage/goal line back. Should fill a big void for us and seems to fit his talents perfectly. Not often a 5th round pick has such a golden opportunity…especially on a SB team. I don’t see him as a FB though…not so much a blocker… as he is a pure runner with good hands out of the backfield.
8. Townsend. Love him. Love him. Love him. And I repeat, Love him. I laugh when I read comments about how he’s lost a step, too slow etc etc. Just like some were saying about Hines heading into last year. You cannot replace experience…no way…no how!! His knowledge, experience, and professionalism is invaluable…especially to the two new rookie CB’s. The fact he is learning to play safety only increases his worth to our team. He will be around in 2009 and contribute in alot of ways to our success…and probably 2010 as well.
I agree with most of your thoughts here but
I think Spaeth is better than you’re giving him credit for. I agree that he is by no means a blocking TE but I think he’s better than a mediocre receiver.
It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

MR, I think you're pretty close on this roster
Maryrose, I’ll go with your roster with a couple of tweaks:
- LT/RT Capizzi makes this roster. This is his year to stick. I cut T. Carter and give him the roster spot.
- D. Woods in the place of A. Harrison (don’t forget that D. Woods made this team straight out of training camp this past year and only lost his spot to P. Bailey when he pulled his hamstring. Wood is good special teams player in his own right that can play ILB and OLB. He was a QB and S in college, so he has the speed Tomlin likes for this position)
- If Tomlin keeps 7 DL and R. Harris shows anything in training camp, I might keep R. Harris over N. Eason for that 7th spot. Eason is still not strong at the point of attack. A true sleeper for a backup DE position is J. Reffert. I think he has the athleticism, size and motor to make the decision interesting. And if the team doesn’t resign Keisel, I want 2 young DE’s returning next year for depth.
Other than those tweaks, I’ll go with your roster as is MR. Great job. Now, let’s get surprised by the 1 or 2 rookie free agent gems that surprise everyone as well as the 2nd year players that are going to be hard to cut — like Roy Lewis.
