BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- SBNation Upgrades Edition

IX- Some of you may have noticed some changes to the Fanpost editor today.  The staff at SBNation has really outdone themselves this time and have added some really cool new features that make creating and posting fanshots easier and at the same time driving more fans to our content here at Behind the Steel Curtain.  Make sure you check out this article for a full rundown on all the changes.

X- Dale Lolley posted a very early look at the 2009 Steelers' roster.  Not a lot of surprises on the list, although Lolley does have seven of our nine draft picks making the roster, which would certainly be a positive sign for a draft that has a lot of questions around it.

20080820pdsteelers0808n_330_medium

XIII- Football.com has an article about what to expect from Rashard Mendenhall going into 2009.  Mendenhall is said to look much stronger in OTA's this season and I am really excited to see him on the field, I just hope he can hold onto the ball.

Star-divide

XIV- The Raven's Le'Ron McClain has taken a page from Casey Hampton's offseason workout regime.  Mclain is reported to be 20 pounds over his playing weight from last season and will surely have to lose some pounds to be as effective as he was during his rookie campaign.

XL- Peter Kings' Monday Morning Quarterback is a good read this week, especially the second page.   King has been working for Sports Illustrated for twenty years now and in his article today he recalls the differences in how the NFL was covered two decades ago versus today.  The constant and immediate coverage of the NFL and American Society in general is something

XLIII- With the 32nd pick in the NFL draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Tim Tebow?  Seriously, mock drafts are already in the works and the guys over at Weller and Bryan's Sports Blog think the Steelers will draft Tebow, as a FB/TE.  I just don't see this as a possibility at all, what do you think?Tim-tebow_medium

Rashard

I’ve been extremely excited to see Rashard in action since we drafted him. Looking back, I suppose he made a lot of us nervous with his fumbleitis in the preseason, but, I remember a game v. Cincy where FWP had quite a few fumbles himself (in FWP’s defense, it was during a monsoon, I was there).

I think the bowling ball AND Limas Sweed both simply suffered from mental rookie mistakes. Only time will tell here but the anticipation for the ‘09-’10 season is getting out of control.

Running game

The problem with the running game last year was not Willie Parker or Rashard – it was an O-line that had only one returning starter – and he happened to be pretty lousy.

If the extra year of experience helps the lien then we will be in good shape. If not then look for the Steelers to suffer major setbacks this year – even with the easier schedule.

by SteelerBuddha on Jun 1, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

I can safely say that the Steelers will not be drafting Tim Tebow next year.

by Cols714 on Jun 1, 2009 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

why would this even be a thought? I’m not doubting this man ability to play in the league but I think if you wanted him you can grab him in the 2nd round unless he just has an all world passing season this year. Plus why draft a QB in the first round when you already have a franchise and a guy u think can back up. Trust me next year will be another year to develop strength on the line LB and S and TE. I can see our first couple of picks being best OL best DL best LB best TE and best S in the each time the steelers pick. I wish we could get T. Mays, i mean can you imagine Mays and Polamalu in the same defense? I’d trade up to get him. We’ll have some extra picks. Lets make it happen !!!

by tannofsteel84 on Jun 1, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldnt draft Tebow above the 5th round, even if i didnt have a QB at all on my roster.

by archon095 on Jun 1, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno

Just like Pat White, I think the man’s a baller, and can definitely play in the league (as a QB).

Great article by Peter King

Not only on the ways reporting on the NFL has changed, but page 3 is a must read on Austin Wood, the Texas hurler.

I’m not usually a big fan of Peter King, but today’s stuff is one of his best.

Like most of us, I’m fired up about Rashard making an impact this year. As an Ilinois resident, I watched him in college and believe he indeed does have the stuff required to deliver.

agree

I’m not a huge Peter King fan, but I do enjoy his monday morning quarterback article almost every week, but this weeks was really, really good.

I’m glad you mentioned the article on the Austin Wood as it is a must read. I have actually been watching a little bit of college baseball recently and enjoy it much, much more than the pro-level. Every batter doesn’t stand in the box for 5 minutes taking his time, so the games move at a much more enjoyable pace.

I am bored to death by anything involving baseball, but the Austin Wood story was one of the coolest sports articles I’ve read in a long time.

EARLY Mock Thoughts...

First off, if Cleveland and Cincy pick up those two safeties, I may actually worry a little about their respective D"s for the first time in my life. If you haven’t seen Berry or Mays play, they will change the safety position in the NFL forever, but that’s just my opinion. It’s pretty rare to see two guys that size cover that much ground, and each will hit you like a 2 ton wrecking ball.
Second, I’m not opposed to the idea of Tebow being a Steeler, I find it nearly impossible, as he will be a much better passer this year than last, and he wasn’t really that awful last year. At least not as bad as you might think when listening to the experts pick him apart. I mean, how could you not want this guy on your team in one way or another. Much like Ben, this guy just wins, its that simple.

Also, if you read the peanut gallery on the McClain article there is actually a guy on there saying that in today’s NFL theres nothing to worry about if a player comes in 20 pounds overweight. Really?! These guys are paid to be professional athletes 365 days a year. If your players are coming in overweight, yeah they can overcome it, but doesn’t that say at least a little something about off season dedication to you? It’s not your fathers pro sports culture anymore. If these guys don’t come in ready to play day one, it should at the very least raise your eyebrow a little.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 1, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

I agree that McClain’s situation should raise an eyebrow. His coaches need to get on that. However, I don’t think it should be blown out of proportion. 20 lbs on a guy who plays at 260 isn’t all that much.

by Varmint on Jun 1, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Twenty pounds on a 260 pound RB took Jorvorskie Lane from mid round power HB prospect to marginal FB (because of lack of mobility) to unsigned, undrafted free agent. It’s not the end of his career, by any stretch of imagination, but he cannot be effective at that weight.

But I’m sure he’ll lose the extra pounds anyway. It’s a nothing story really. I found it funny how quickly it was dismissed by that guy. McClain didn’t even weigh in, it was a reporter’s observation. He may not even be overweight, really. This reporter isn’t paid to sit at a fair and guess weights, so he may be wrong all together.

OL can go nowhere but up (at least hoping so)

SteelerBuddha, the optimal thing to hope for is that the line improves with the experience of playing together for the first time this past year, having 2 players (Chris K. & D. Stapleton) starting for the first time ever in their careers and also by having a new center who is no longer new to your team, the line calls, the scheme or his linemates.

With that being said, this OL went against some pretty good defenses this past year and our schedule is nowhere near where last year’s was. Not defending them because they were a weakness, but that schedule and those defenses were tough. The D’s in the NFC East are no joke and then to play the Ravens 3 times on top of that was quite a feat.

As far as Lolley’s blog, I asked him to drop his early 53 so that we’d have something to discuss. I only have two changes to Lolley’s list:

Dropping FB Carey Davis & RT R. Foster and replacing them with LT/RT Jason Capizzi and (1 of these next three) either A. Madison, Andre Frazier or TE/FB/H-Back rookie 7th-round pick A. Johnson.

Lolley likes Davis for his special teams, but the Tank can play special teams as probably can A. Johnson. McHugh and Johnson can both block. All 3 can catch the ball out of the backfield. Carey Davis brings nothing to your base offense as a FB.

I can’t see Tomlin cutting A. Madison (his best special teams player this past year) or him feeling comfortable with a trio of Bruce Davis, Patrick Bailey, or D. Woods as a starting OLB in the base defense if Harrison or Woodley get hurt. A. Frazier is a security blanket for Dick LeBeau, can rush the passer and is a good special teams player. If it came down to Frazier or Madison, I’d take Frazier.

From The Onion:

I don’t know if anyone’s commented on this yet, but damn it’s at least as funny as it is offensive.
“Investigators: Increasingly Likely That James Harrison Bit Own Son”
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/investigators_increasingly?utm_source=a-section

quote: “If that turns out to be the case, the legal liability will actually rest with Harrison’s handlers. Linebackers can be an aggressive breed, and we’ve seen plenty of examples of how poorly trained and badly socialized James is in particular.” James III is almost completely recovered and has been released from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, while his father has been quarantined at Animal, Linebacker, and Wide Receiver Control of McKees Rocks, PA.

LOL – you got to love that they included wide receivers also!

Wow, I like the Onion, but that really is testing the boundaries of good taste.

Sometimes unfunny and tasteless prove a point

Agreed BM,
They once had a bit I thought went too far. Let me relate:

It was about a fictional disappearance of a girl, and the fake newsanchors kept adding that it wasn’t impossible that rape and all sorts of ensuing hideousness has already occurred without the facts being made yet.
The fake newsanchors kept saying things like “No information yet regarding the disappearance, but we can’t help but think she was tortured severely.”

I felt it was bad taste because they used the town Bloomington, IN, where a college girl was actually kidnapped, killed and buried (assumedly by her assailant) a few years before.

It wasn’t funny to me at all. I thought it was selfish to make that kind of joke when the parents of the girl must still be suffering. However, it was still good satire. Salacious details draw page views and sell papers. The consumer and the dealer are both at fault. I think its best that the Onion piss us off to tell the whole story.

by betelgeuse on Jun 2, 2009 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Now THAT’s funny, and it’s funny because newscasters do that. Maybe they could have picked a different town, but at least the idea is fundamentally funny.

The Harrison article isn’t funny and doesn’t seem to be mocking anyone in particular, unless I’m missing something. If I am missing something, it’s probably too subtle for satire. It sounds more like the sort of fake article one of us (Mechem, I’m looking at you) would put in the Fan Posts section here, not the biting satire of the media industry I’d expect from the Onion. A high degree of humor can cover up a lot of offensiveness (e.g South Park), but if the humor isn’t there, there’s nothing to do but be offended.

No way Pittsburgh gets Tebow

He won’t make it down that far. I think he’ll be a Qb in the NFL.

by Freddyd on Jun 1, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t trust any article that references milkshake as a source, that’s just bad journalism. :)

Also, for our resident pittsburgh-blitz guy.

“He should see nine to 10 carries a game, but could also see time on third downs in passing situations and in the short yardage game.

The first and third assertion may be correct, but there is absolutely no way Mendenhall takes over Moore’s position as a 3rd down back on passing situations. MeMo is everything we need and Moore (can’t resist) in that facet. Mendenhall better be competing with WIllie because MeMo is about as good a 3rd down passing back as you are going to find.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

Tebow & McClain

Shoot, I’d take T, but there’s no way we can get him at the place we’ll want him at. He’ll be too hyped.

Prior to the draft 07: LeRon McClain: I’m 6’0" and 247 lbs. As long as I am somewhere below 250, I’ll be fine and dandy.

Tebow?

No chance i’d grab Tebow, not doubting his athletic ability, BUT i would pretty much do anything to grab one of those safeties , …look at last years championship teams..all four of them had pro-bowl talent safety..Dawkins, Polamalu, Reed, Wilson…now imagine having two amazing safety on one team..although… I am still a big fan of Ryan Clark.

Should have, could have, but didn't
