A Night to Remember
Now that I'm done crying with laughter over Louis Castillo's play of the century, I can actually type something up. You know Bill Buckner has to be laughing his ass off right now.
So anyway, I'm not gonna lie to you. I know little to nothing about Hockey. The few things that stick out in my mind are Wayne Gretzky is Canada's Jesus, and that in the former USSR the year 1980 does not exist.
So anyway, I tuned into the Pens game tonight, remembering it was on, and being the Pittsburgh-lover that I am, I immediately immersed myself in the game remembering to set the TIVO to record in case history was about to be made. Within 3 minutes my heart rate was at a dangerously high level. After checking in with ESPN, I knew Crosby was out, and about 10 minutes after I started watching, the Red Wings cut the lead to one, only making things a little more dramatic. So as the minutes dragged by, Detroit again and again advanced on the net, making the room a little fuzzy each time an announcer thought a goal had been scored. Being the hockey noob, the one thing I really picked up on was that the Pens were protecting their lead with all they had, rarely taking the offensive; good Defense-it's just a Pittsburgh thing. As the final minutes ticked away, I kept thinking "City of Champions, City of Champions, City of Champions" and finally as the closing seconds off the scoreboard vanished, that dream became a reality. For the first time since 1979, Pittsburgh is once again THE City of Champions.

Congrats to the Steelers, the Penguins, and to the great City of Pittsburgh, may this just be the beginning of a trophy filled future!

epic
what a game – I watched it through, start to finish – was biting my nails off for about the last half hour – amazing team defense by the Pens, and key play by Fleury. One of the more exciting games of any sport I’ve ever watched…

Me too, the only game I watched all year.
Actually one of the only 5-10 hockey games I’ve ever watched, and 3-4 of those were live.
I’m on the SB, other championship, SB band wagon all of the way. Heck I hope the Pirates win it all too, just for good luck.

Thanks
It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

Look at the organizations.
the Pens and Steelers are being run very well, intelligently with regards to finances and phenomenal in finding the right players to complete the puzzle.
Get ready for a steady dose of winning from these teams, and if teh Pirates are on the right track (I’m buying in) by the time Crosby hits his “prime” we’ll have three teams that win a lot.
Mind you the Pirates won’t win it all, but seriously, a playoff appearance every three or four years would be great.

I don’t know how well run the Pens are as much as they just landed two of the 3 best players in league in back to back years. I’m not saying they’re poorly run or anything but it’s pretty hard to go wrong with Sid and Geno running the show.

Sid was luck... Geno...
Getting Sid was luck — we had to win the lottery. But Geno was different. We picked him even though he wasn’t available to play.. .drafting him out of the Russian league with the second pick of the draft. That was really ballsy, since he may have never come to America. Pundits at the time were talking about how we threw away a pick…

The moves Shero has made have been great. and look at the players who were series changers.
Talbot with his defense and scoring in game 7, he was on every puck.
Craig Adams (guy dominated the boards and hitting)
Letang’s defense and skating
Scuderi, he was no top pick.
Orpik, he sucked when we first got him.
Fleury, look at how he has improved.
Staal, a super smart pick even though we had two centers.
Gill, a great pick up, he’s got weaknesses but paired with Scuderi he can focus on cleaning the net (how well did Holmstrom do this series with Hal all over him.)
The list goes on and on, Crosby played good, but the Wings shut him down, Malkin played phenomenal, but we outplayed the wings in the end with depth. Building a team around a great core is not easy, but the moves they make are the right ones, and the results show.

right now
the Lombardi Trophy, the Stanley Cup, and the Commissioner’s Trophy all rest in Pennsylvania. And the NIT trophy too! (I know it’s not the same level). Hell, didn’t the Hershey Bears just win the Calder Cup too? The Bears are my boys man. Good times.

Good game
Not my favorite game of the series quality wise, I’d still say I preferred game 4.
But in general it was another fine outing. To me they were the best team, and even in the losses were not bad looking. Game 1 was flukey, game 2 the shots were gold but wouldnt go in, and game 5 was Fluery being off.
I enjoyed the game sitting at a bar in Canada throwing back brew-daddys and talking to a blind man who was cheering for pittsburgh. And I made a bet with the bartender that if we won he had to buy me a drink and vice versa. Got me a good big mug at the end of it all :D

+1
Games 6 and 7 were brawls. I preferred Game 4 as well — the last truly skillful game of the playoffs.
But if the Refs are going to keep swallowing the whistle, we’ll have to play like game 6 and 7 in order to win…

I liked the series, it was playoff hockey. Reminded me of the old NBA knicks series, you had to be focused and tough as well as talented.
