BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- City of Champions Edition

IX- The relatively small sports market of Pittsburgh has had a dream season with the Steelers winning Super Bowl XLIII, and the Penguins and their young team of superstars led by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin capturing the third Stanley Cup title in franchise history.  A victory parade was held in their honor this afternoon with tens of thousands in attendance.  I also wanted to share this joke that has been passing around twitter and I'm not sure the creator, but it's quite funny:

Did you hear about the special Starbucks is having? It's called the 'Hossa' and comes without a cup!

20090613-004317-pic-467599947_r350x200_medium

X-  Today was the launch of the semi-finals of the Tomlinism tournament here at Behind the Steel Curtain.  You can vote on the first match-up here, and the second match-up here.  The voting for the semi-finals ends on Wednesday June 17th at 11pm EST.

Star-divide

XIII- Ben Roethlisberger is better than Justin Timberlake, Michael Jordan, and Tony Romo At golf that is, but we all know that he is surely better than Romo at football as well, considering Romo's 0-2 record in the playoffs and Ben's two Super Bowl Rings. Roethlisberger shot an 81 (11 over) at Bethpage Black during the celebrity challenge to break 100 on the site of the upcoming U.S. Open.

XIV- Who will win the quarterback controversy in Cleveland?  It looks like Derek Anderson has been missing time in practice due to some minor injuries and resting during practice while  Brady Quinn according to a scouts Inc. report is "light on his feet."  Seriously, it said that in the article, read it for yourself.  Although it shouldn't be a big surprise if you have ever seen this picture.

Yipesbrady_medium

XL- As already expected the NFL has decided to extend the Rooney Rule to senior level operations positions with each team.  There are a few exceptions where family members are allowed the positions and the team is exempt to the rule, and other executives who are contractually obligated for a higher level position are exempt as well.

XLIII- Leading up to the 2009 NFL draft many mock-drafts (and Steelers' fans for that matter) had linked former West Virginia quarterback Pat White with the Pittsburgh Steelers' due to their success with versatile college quarterbacks' like Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El, and Kordell Stewart.  White was actually drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round, but last week White was also drafted in the 48th round by the New York Yankees, which completely surprised the NFL rookie.  White was also drafted out of high school by the Anaheim Angles in the fourth round, but decided to forgo MLB to start his stellar career at West Virginia.  So far the Yankees have yet to reach White and White is more concerned about playing football with the Dolphins.  It's certainly an interesting story and shows how versatile an athlete White is.

“The Hossa” — oh that was good… I am hoping more are coming!

Is Quinn really touching there?

Oh man oh man. Always knew those Brownies were Super!

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Way to go Pittsburgh

Any chance the Pirates pull off the tri-fecta?
Rendell must be sick to his stomache, being the Phila-homer that he is. Now he’s got to take even more crap from the other half of the state….

As far as Quinn, well….not really sure what to say except that he brought it on himself. Multiple shots like this? Wow. Dumb-founded…..

I called my buddy in Philly to tell him how weak it is

to only have one pro sports title at a time in your city. Then he reminded me I didn’t even grow up in Pittsburgh and thus my opinion is irrelevant. Fair enough, but at least we have the Hershey Bears! Too many titles right now.

"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."

Daily News Post Game Live

I live outside Philly, so I see him on the Eagles post-game all of the time. It’s pretty funny actually, he’s such a homer. How uncomfortable did he look when he had to make those ‘City vs. City’ bets during the play-offs and Super Bowl? Probably didn’t even know half the players on the Steelers, but had to do the right thing for the State and stand up for one of his teams…. HA! Typical politician.

Any Pittsburgh tri-fecta must include two Super Bowls, so the Pirates will have to wait IMO.

No words

Can I create to be witty or funny enough to truly express those pictures of Quinn. Wow…just wow. No wonder he sucks at football. He is too busy staring at opponents’ wieners to concentrate on football.

Congrats to all you fans of the Pens. Still bitter.

Quinn is Queen

I probably should not even bother since I hate the Browns, but I kind of feel sorry for them so I am giving a little thought to those Quinn’s pics trying to find one single reason a heterosexual guy would do what those guys are doing in those pictures, and honestly I cant find one single reason, I mean, why would you do that? Is it like a funny joke in school, a prank? And if u do that, will u be ok when ur friends see it? ur family? WTF? Can someone explain to me what the hell was going on there? Am I missing something about College? Are things in my country just different? Seriously what the hell is that shit about?! If they are gay its ok, its their nature, but if they are not, then they have to be the most stupid kids around..

by setherian on Jun 15, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Am I missing something about College?

Sounds like it to me. My friends and I (all straight as far as I know) did stupid shit like this all the time. The only difference between what we did is that a) none of us turned out to be NFL quarterbacks and b) in 95-99 not everyone had a cell phone camera in their pocket at all times.

Seriously, hate on Brady Quinn all you want for being a dick to interviewers or a crappy QB, but just like Ben with his drunk photos (plenty of those of me) or Phelps with his high photos (some of those of me too) give the guy a break when he’s being ridiculous around his friends.

Right. I see those pictures as a sort of ad hominem snipe at gays

Disgusts me that people are so willing to bring out pictures like that and then crack jokes about a persons supposed lack of masculinity. We are better than that.

by SteelersVT on Jun 16, 2009 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed SteelersVT,

The pictures are probably not in line with the thoughtful discussion and tastefulness that BTSC is known for. The off season can be quite slow and I meant it as merely an innocent joke, but now I definitely can see how offensive it can be and how serious folk take it. My bad, point taken. Thanks for calling me out.

Hi DYMS, I hope I don't sound like I'm calling you out...

This picture has been posted here at least 10 times, and its not so much the picture that bugs me but what people say about it.

I was actually waiting for someone to jump in and tell me “its just a JOKE. Lighten UP.” This is a little like when people crack jokes about gas ovens and jewish people every time there’s a gas odor in a house, or when they singe their hair on the grill, etc. I am amazed that people joke about things like that, but if you point out stuff like that, “oh lighten up, its just a joke”.

Good that no one said that, so we are making improvements.

by SteelersVT on Jun 16, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You gotta relax...seriously

Everyone is joking around. No one is going out and wearing Swastikas, yelling about jews and gays, and whatever those worthless shits do. We are just making jokes.

I had a best friend who died of brain cancer and all he did was constantly make jokes about cancer and everything to do it. It was hilarious. He didn’t do it because he hates people with cancer. He did it because he wanted people to feel comfortable about the situation and because it WAS funny.

A joke is just that a joke, not a serious political statement. As a partial Jewish Polack I laugh at jew jokes and stinky Polack jokes.

Happiness For A Sports Junkie!

Triple Crown!
First my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers win the Super Bowl. Then another local team I grew up cheering (ghosts of Syl Apps and Bob “Battleship” Kelly) wins their 3rd Stanley Cup. My week ends with my hometown Los Angeles Lakers (I’m a season ticket holder) winning the NBA Championship. What a sports year at the 5020 compound! My thoughts;

1) Big Ben is a true leader and a growing legend. He reminded me of Elway on day one and continues to not disappoint. There is not a QB in the NFL I would take over him with our porous OL. We will compete for a Lombardi every year 7 suits up no matter who is around him. Arians, Zierlein and Colon taught me that this year!
2) Sid, Malkin & Fleury are young and hungry and can compete for Lord Stanley’s Cup for years to come. Sky is the limit as long as the Pens can put guys around them like the clutch Maxime Talbott and Fleury sees the puck like it’s a beach ball. Nothing greater than seeing the man that saved hockey in Pittsburgh (twice) hoisting the Cup. Hail Mario! No greater joke than the Hossa at Starbucks! LMFAO.
3) Kobe is a leader and the greatest player in the NBA. A couple times this year some discussed LeBron’s greatness and how he is the King. Not yet. KB has 4 titles and has grown and matured into a great leader. By giving up the ball in the final seconds of game 4 to D Fish who cemented his rep as one of the great clutch players in Lakers history (see Robert Horry) Kobe has shown he is no longer a ball hog who can’t give up a shot. Congrats to the Lakers and to KB24 the true NBA MVP.

Maybe Mariotti isn't such an idiot

Hard to argue with Sid the Kid, Big Ben etc. Now if the Buccos could just play ball…. hahah

Motivation for a 7th ring?

Guys, I’m probably a little late on this, but this shows our Steelers flaunting their bling at the ceremony. I hadn’t seen this video before. Those rings are HUGE!

Good Poast

I love that hossa bit. Personally, I dont blame the guy for takin a long term deal but it was kinda cheap to ditch a team that was in the Cup to go for another. Serves him right IMO.

And man oh man Big Ben with the Big Bertha hittin it up good. You realize thats like the hardest course of the year? Putting 11 over is nothing to be ashamed of at all.

by Mechem on Jun 16, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I bet their are a few pro’s that shoot an 81 on that course.

I'll drink your Milkshake, I'll drink it up!

There will probably be pro’s that shoot worse.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 16, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Woods was the only one under par last year at Bethpage Black

An 81 is extremely impressive. I wonder if it was hard to swing the club with two gigantic superbowl rings on his fingers. Granted Jordan had 6 rings to work with…

Hossa didn’t take a long term deal. He chose a short-term deal (detroit) over a long-term deal (pittsburgh, many others). You’ve heard of bandwagon fans. Hossa is a bandwagon player.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

Great shirt to celebrate the city and mock the pirates all at the same time

Haven’t been to a Pirates game since the days of Van Slike and Bonilla.
