NFL's Top 10 Defenses
The NFL Channel will unveil it's picks for the top 10 NFL Defenses on Friday at 8pm. I already let Brian McCarthy, NFL Spokesperson that I would ban NFL Channel if Steelers were not included...to which he responded:
"NFLprguy@steelergurl u r bluffing but I don't think u have anything to worry about"
Anyway, would love everyone's feedback so I can write a post here.
And yes, I am lazy...work with me boys :) Comments on blog will be included - but MUST be sent to me prior to 8pm Friday :)

Assuming this is for ALL TIME
I like that ’77 Falcons defense at number 1 followed by the ’85 Bears and the ’78 Steelers battling for position.
I dont think it is
On her blog it says something like “who do you think the best defenses going into next year are.”

1. Pittsburgh Steelers- I’m a homer, and they are the best d in the league
2. N.Y. Giants- A healthy Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, & Clint Sintim will lead to good things
3. Baltimore Ravens’- Still Good
4. Washington Redskins- Good D Last year with no pass rush- this year Orakapo & Haynesworth should help
5. Philadelphia Eagles-Drop a bit without Johnson leading the D
6. Tennessee Titans- Drop with loss of Haynesworth
7. Miami Dolphins- Jason Taylor back and another year in the system for the rest of the D should help
8. Atlanta Falcons- Improving young D, with solid young coach & GM
9. Minnesota Vikings- Might even be a little high since the Williams Brothers are gone for 4 games each, and their pass D is suspect because their run D is so good.
10. N.Y. Jets- Little bit of a surprise but with Ryan at the helm they should be much improved.

Another Sintim fan?
Kinda hoped we’d grab him if we the shot. Don’t really need him but I liked the way he played at Virginia.

ya he was always impressive in college.
Virginia seems to have a knack for being mediocre but really have a lot of players develop into solid NFLer’s

They also run a 3-4...
Which you’d think would be more popular in college as most DE’s are NFL LBer’s anyway, but I guess you can’t make it exactly the same or pigeon hole college as a “minor league”. See spread offenses/ Options etc. They run a good program predicated on gap responsibilties and being able to read o-line plans. Defensive players come out reading the field better than they do at most other schools, even my Hokies, as bad as that hurts to say.

They have had some major O-Line studs coming out lately too.

I know...
Monroe and Albert, namely. Kansas City drafted Albert, made him a tackle. I thought he’d make a great guard for us, seeing as we lost Faneca that year, but when that hype machine starts a roling, it sure is hard to stop.

interpret it how you like
meaning all time or next year. I was going with next year because you know, nothing else to talk about…but I know the show will cover all time…I’ll write my post accordingly :)
Thank you!!
By the way, the rest of ya’ll need to get on twitter…I was “verbally assaulted” by a Skins fan today lol…where’s the backup?

fair enough...though I did RT it...
plus, I think he’s just bitter….He should be verbally assaulting their owner who is the main reason they suck, quite frankly.

Amen
I was a skins fan till Snyder traded every player we had for a washed up star. Then I vowed I would not cheer for my skins till Snyder was gone. Of course, I haven’t suffered for fully indulging in steelers fandom.

What can a skins fan even say?
They suck. Remember when we stomped you last year? And made Campbell throw his first pick of the year?

They can talk about winning the off-season super bowl every year. That’s something to be proud of.

mad about me living in DC
Seems to be popular consensus…why are Steelers fans in my city kinda BS.
crybabies. Be mad at us… not our fault we have a good owner and they don’t ;)

nfl channel!!
it should be called the Brady/Bellicheck suck up station! This station acts like the patriots won the last 4 superbowls! This station also ranked the saints linebackers number 1 of all time! rickey jackson, sam mills and company better than Lambert, ham and russell…take what they say with a grain of salt!
I thought and the narrator even said they did that so the Saints could win something.
Those LB’s of Ham and Lambert have to be top.
However, they did have good DL and DB on those great Steeler teams and that LB corp of N.O. in the early 90s was bad-ass.

That Saints LB core
Was tough. I don’t have much of a problem placing them at the top. It’s like arguing Lebron vs Kobe and Magic vs Bird.
+1

I'm new here but I started a thread like this on PSD
Kerry Rhodes, FS of the Jets proclaims the Jets the best defense in the NFL
What do you think, has Kerry Rhodes’ statement got any merit at all, or should he get a clue? Who are your top 10 Defenses?
Here are mine;
1. The Steelers; The Steelers were #1 in 2008 and I actually believe they will be better this year. I loved Foote, but I truely believe Timmons will be lights out and I think William Gay and Ryan Mundy will suprise people in the secondary. Still the best
2. The New York Football Giants; Starting with a great front four – Chris Canty, Justin Tuck, , Mathias Kiwanula, and Osi Umenyiora coming back healthy. The jury is still out on the secondary but as a whole these guys are great.
3. The Cowboys; They are just big fast and very very good and obviously DeMarcus Ware is a beast.
4. The Ravens; They still have the core of the #2 D from last year Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs and Ray Lewis but I think the loss of Scott and DC Ryan is going to hurt them a little, even with the leadership of Ray Ray on the field.
5. The Titans; Fat Albert is with the Skins now and Coach Schwartz left but DE Jason Jones is real good. They have some depth on the D line Haynesworth will be hard to repalce but I think they will be fine. The secondary is very good.
6. The Eagles; The loss of Dawkins and Sheppard should not be as devistating as some people think this D can be real good with its blitzing style out of the 4-3.
7. The Chargers, Merriman is back and Cromartie is healthy again. Even with Merriman off the “roids” I think he is still great. They may actually be better than 7th but thats where I’m putting them for now.
8. The Patriots; This team benefits from the offense they put on the field. I don’t believe they are a top 10 defense without their offense and Belicheat. They may have upgraded the secondary which was a real weakness last year that remains to be seen. This is about where they were statistically last year and Bill Belichick is still there.
9. The Redskins; They had a very good Defense last year and adding Fat Albert is a definite upgrade. However, I think they need to learn how to have a “Team First” attitude in D.C. instead of being just a group of over paid mercenaries before they can reach their potential.
10. The Vikings; The Vikings were very good against the run last year but they may be without 2 key members of the D line for the first 4 games. Starting defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams (the williams sisters) this really could hurt them and the secondary is not that good.
Note to Kerry Rhodes; The Jets don’t even make the top 10!!!!! Sorry..
writing post on this stuff late today/early tomorrow
so if you still have comments, give’em to me…
especially if it’s forward thinking into the next season.
I know NFL does all time, but I am creating debate going into next season, mostly cuz I am bored.
Anyway, will holler when it’s posted.

hmmm...
No love for the 2008 Steelers on your list? We had an interesting discussion on here with great stats on best historical defense a while back. But 2008 definitely could crack the top ten if I remember correctly. Doing what they did against the offenses they did it against was incredible.
by Chicago Steeler on Jun 22, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I did a look forward...
meaning, the historical came from the NFL Channel and I was looking at the 2009 teams for the story.
So, that’s why no strong call out for 2008 defense specifically….that said, the fact that I still rate 2009 as #1 D in the NFL and there was not much change, then one could assume I still place 2008 at #1.
As it fits into the historical list, I would place the 2008 Steelers at #3.
but that’s not what my post was about – and specifically because it was already covered here at BTSC.
Not trying to reinvent the wheel…but definitely a good point.

DEEE FENSE!!
Great post. Noted only that you left off McFadden as a lost starter in addition to Foote. Perhaps only because he did in fact split time with Big Play for a good portion of the year and did miss 4 games altogether. Potential weakness, and though we won’t know for a while yet, I still don’t think that will be nearly enough to cause the D to slide out of the #1 slot. If Gay shows weakness, he’ll get help.
I also agree with leaving the Chargers and Cowboys off the top 10 but it is close. Once you get “down there”, it becomes interchangeable.
