BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- The O.J. Bowl Edition

IX- The Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers may very well be the favorites to win their respective conferences and compete for Super Bowl 2009.  The Steelers are of course the defending Super Bowl champions who are returning all but three starters and the Eagles have surrounded Donavan McNabb with his best group of skill position players since the days of Terrell Owens.  But this wasn't always the case; back in 1968 the Eagles and the Steelers were both 0-6 and set to meet on October 27th. Check out this article on "The O.J. Bowl", a game that indirectly led to the Steelers selecting a somewhat unknown player from North Texas State that would anchor the Steelers defense for four Super Bowl Championships.

Greene_joe20_medium

X- The Steelers' drafted another Defensive end in the first round this year, and are hoping his impact will be similar to "Mean" Joe Greene's.  Jim Wexell reports from OTA's on the progress that Ziggy Hood is making, and according to long time NFL executive Charlie Casserly, he looks very impressive so far.  Starter Casey Hampton is also impressed with Hood's abilities, especially his ability to use his hands to keep blockers off of him.  The most surprising thing in the entire article was Hood's quotes on the much maligned tackle, Willie Colon.

"He was an eye opener for me, something I had to go in the film room and watch. It was rough out there. The first practice was going fine until he came along, and that really opened me up because he came right at me like a raging bull. There was nothing I could do about it."

Star-divide

XIII- A local Pittsburgh employee of NFL films was able to put together the highlight real from this years' 2008-2009 NFL season and it premiered at Heinz Field last Friday.  The 23 minute film will also air on the NFL network in the near future.  In order to tide you over until then, here is a video that 2005steelers4life posted originally in a fanpost.

XIV- Hines Ward says "We are thin at the wide receiver depth."  He mentions that Limas Sweed looks much more confident as we have heard reported multiple times.  He also had kind words for Mike Wallace and Shaun McDonaldHines Ward's physical skills may be slightly on the decline, but his attitude, work-ethic, and skills as a mentor make him one of the more valuable members of the team.  It will be a sad day in Pittsburgh when Hines Ward hangs up his cleats.

XL- Time to beat up on the Cleveland Browns one more time.  This reason this time is new head coach, Eric Mangini's decision to "ask" his rookie players to ride 20 hours by bus on a weekend to help support his football camp.  While Mangini's camp is certainly a good cause, it's not a good sign the rookie players and their agents feel they were forced into going to the "voluntary" camp.

XLIII- MMA is not something I am a regular viewer of, but I can say I will probably watch at least a few episodes of Kimbo Slice on "The Ultimate Fighter 10."  Dude is a pure beast and although he has been very unimpressive so far in his previous MMA bouts it should be make for some decent T.V.  Who would win in a fight James Harrison or Kimbo Slice?

OVERTIME-In the spirit of wishing the Penguins good luck tonight, I am mentioning that they play game three in Pittsburgh tonight, down 2-0 in the series.  I mentioned their games in the previous two series and they pulled those out, so hopefully in the interest of brining another title to Pittsburgh, check out Pensburgh tonight for the live chat.

Great job dredging up that 1968 game

Remember it well, it was so shameful. The story talks about Kuharich losing his job at the end of the season. Steelers’ Coach Bill Austin also lost his job at the end of the season also. Austin was worse than Kuharich. The Chief hired him in 1966 after a couple phone calls with Vince Lombardi, under whom Austin was an assistant. The Chief figured if Lombardi heaped praise, that was good enough for him. What he may not have taken into account was that Lombardi wanted him out of Green Bay. Austin used to beat the hell out of the players during camp, thinking he was Lombardi 2. NOT! He also didn’t have any draft picks since Buddy Parket traded them all away. The franchise was in absolute turmoil. That 1968 game proved that the Steelers couldn’t win for losing. Thanks for bringing it up.

no problem,

I was hoping you would stop by to get your perspective…Since I wasn’t around to form my own opinions on that game, I am limited to what others can remember and convey.

Nice work Hines, always nice to hear good things about players we like, and its good to hear Hines saying good stuff about Limas, seems pretty credible now.

James Harrison vs. Kimbo Slice? I don’t know how many fights James has been in, but I would assume less than Kimbo. That said Kimbo loses to well trained fighters because he shows little defensive intelligence, so maybe we put Kimbo in a browns shirt and James just body slams him.

As for Mangini, he’s a punk that grew up and thinks he’s somebody, he’s like a nasty gym teacher, he thinks he’s for real but he’s never done anything.

Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?

Nice

Kubric to Joseph Heller (who fittingly wrote Catch 22):

Incongruity is certainly one of the sources of laughter—the incongruity of sitting in a room talking to somebody who has a big chart on the wall that says "tragic but distinguishable postwar environments" and that says "one to ten million killed." …There is something so absurd and unreal about what you’re talking about that it’s almost impossible to take it seriously.

The good thing about that '68 game

Is that the franchise found the bottom and hit it hard. Also, though we got the short end on draft picks we made out better than anyone else. That would be the first step in the long climb up.

Encouraging news about Ziggy! Great news if he can contribute significantly this season. Not so great news perhaps for Keisel. Interesting description of Colon. Not what the haters would expect.

NO Kidding

I’ve been really negative about the OL for a long time.

I’d eat my words gladly if or when the coaches & FO are correct about this group of guys.

by steelerstyle on Jun 2, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Problem with Colon

Was never really his strength. The guy just always looked slow against speed rushers. Also his mental game seems a bit weak. Between the killer false start penalties, the holding calls and the moments when he seems to not recognize the blitz, he had me shaking my head more times then any other player on the team least year.

I am not saying the guy doesn’t have something going for him. He must have something on his side to win the job over Max Starks. I also have no doubt that strength wise he can beat up on the rookie a bit. Makes you wonder why he isn’t a guard. But we’ve been down that road.

Ziggy ain't seen nothing yet

If he think Colon is a “bull,” wait until he goes up a good player like LT Eric Thomas or Clady from the Broncos. He’ll probably look as lost as Mendenhall did last preseason.

DYMS, love the video!

I watched film this past week from the Super Bowl and the game against the Patriots. Someone needs to put together some clips on all the occasions that Steelers got pushed back on goal line and short yardage plays during the season.

Amazing that they won a championship and struggled so much in the trenches.

Agreed – if Colon is a beast to Zigford, what’s he going to look like against the rest of the league. Oh well, maybe he was just being a polite rookie?

Hood vs Colon

“The first practice was going fine until he came along, and that really opened me up because he came right at me like a raging bull. There was nothing I could do about it.”

That was most likely before the snap. It’s commonly known as a false start.

GREAT 6pack today!

That story of the “OJ” bowl had me cracking up. I was not around that long ago, so that was some new, refreshing, and hilarious Steelers’ history.

I legitimately got sad when I read the portion about Hines Ward. He has been a Steeler basically as long as I have been a Steelers’ fan. My heart dropped when I read his quote, because it feels as if he is talking about himself being on the outs. Ugh! Not enough gratitude can be shown in my opinion to a legendary Steeler. You my boy Hines.

Kimbo vs. Harrison? Harrison would eat Kimbo for lunch with a side of Tito Ortiz.

by Johnny_S on Jun 2, 2009 5:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Another Super 6-Pack

Great to hear about Mr. Ward yet again taking charge of his neighborhood. You read quite a bit about the Steelers and how the vets groom the younger guys; it’s great to see the team attitude.

Encouraging to hear about Ziggy as well. Can’t wait till they put the pads on…..

Kimbo on UF10? Big coup for Dana White. Whether or not Kimbo can do the MMA stuff or not, he is a fighter. There is more than enough interest in seeing him that both Kimbo and the UPFC should benefit and the fans too.

'69=75

I remember that coin toss well. When the Steelers drafted Joe Greene we both were wondering who he was. After suffering thru prior Steeler no drafts to drafting guys like Bob Ferguson….Dick Leftridge…Jim “Cannonball” Butler, etc. I definitely remember my dad saying, “Same old Steelers.” Believe when I say at that time both of us were not in the habit of getting overly excited by the Steeler drafts anymore.

Lets hope Ziggy eats Colon for breakfast at TC. Man! That dose’nt sound too appetizing.
As I write this W Colon and Max Starks just appeared on the Penguins warmup show.

Go Pens

Pens won tonight which was pretty kickin.

I’m looking forward to seeing both this years and last years draft class combine into one super draft class this year and basically violating the opponents in many ways

Thin At WR...

Most of us saw this group and were fairly pleased with it, but with Hines speaking out about a lack of depth I had to think. First off, he’s clearly trying to push the younger guys to constantly get better. But second, when you look at our WR’s you do notice a slight lack of experience, outside the SB MVP’s of course. McDonald has legit NFL experience, but in primarily one system, Mike Martz’s, which is pass happy system and has inflated stats of similar receivers in the past. Plus its his first year in our offense. He should be fine, but expect (at least) some transitional dificulties. Limas and Wallace are young and fairly unproven, so assuming they can contribute is just that, an assumption. Is there a chance of adding one more depth player, just before camp as added motivation? Brandon Williams has been decent from what I’ve read, but he’s still a question mark.

Anybody think maybe Marvin Harrison might be interested? He’s not going to give you great production (I would think, but I’ve been wrong before) and adding yet another GREAT receiver would really help the young guys even more. Maybe not Harrison, but I feel another proven vet wouldn’t hurt. Thoughts? I’ve got a loooong shot theory about next year, but for fear of ridicule, will hold it back for now.

Thin at reciever

I actually think that we are not nearly as thin at receiver as we were last year. Sweed should take a step in year 2 and both he and wallace should provide some stretch over top – along with Santonio. Mcdonald offers a legit possession guy to step in if Ward or Santonio goes down.

by SteelerBuddha on Jun 3, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like McDonald...

But I’m not sure he’ll be as good as advertised. The slot receiver always put up decent number’s in Martz’s offense (Az Hakim comes to mind, Ricky Proehl for a year or two). I hate the term “system player”, but the sytem boosted numbers for players in it.
I guess we’ll find out if it was McDonald’s play or if he reaped the benefits of a pass happy offense and being the second or third defensive responsibilty for teams.
I’m happy with what we have. Sweed should be good, Wallace is fast as hell, and McDonald is there to pick up the slack. We do have Hines and ’Tone, I just hope there is a good plan B, in case of injury.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 3, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Cedric Wilson is a fair comparison for McDonald. Wilson wasn’t a very good starter for us, but he could get the job done as our #3. McDonald isn’t Wes Welker, but he is a decent veteran WR, which gives us a guy other than Ward who can go over the middle and someone who should be dependable if our young guys flake out. If we have an injury and the coaches don’t want to start Sweed, McDonald would a better option than Sean Morey. The two things I like better about McDonald than Wilson are that he’s not starting and he’s not making a lot of money.

Consider me not interested, from what I saw in him last year he is done.

I hear you...

I had Marvin on my fantasy team last year, let’s just say he was perma-benched. I held onto him though, I kept telling myself “He’s got to click with Peyton at some point, right?” We all know how wrong I was.

I’m not so sure it was him wanting money though. I thought it was more a case of not worth the money invested type thing. But I guess that would explain no body showing interest this year.

Damn...

I thought he was above all that. But I guess that’s my ‘Cuse bias. That whole shooting thing in Philly probably didn’t help either.

Speaking of the Iggles, why wouldn’t they make a run at him. Tutoring those two young wideouts. But they never go after anyone to help that crew so I shouldn’t be surprised. They never would of drafted Maclin if he hadn’t fallen so far.
