BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- Holmes to the Hall Edition
IX-Santionio Holmes displays a sense of confidence that quite franly borders on cockyness in an interview with The Sporting News. Steeler fans' haven't heard talk like that since the days of Plaxico Bullet Burress. Holmes states his goal is to make the Hall of Fame, and he also talks about the reason he chose Ohio State was to become a more accomplished and complete NFL receiver. Holmes' confidence caught me a bit of guard and the first question I had after reading the interview was "is Santonio Holmes going to re-sign with the Steelers?" I have my doubts, your thoughts?
X-So you think Rashard Mendenhall can dance? Check out Pittsburgh Sports and Mini Ponnies for a video of what is believed to be Rashard Mendenhall groving and moving to Michael Jackson's "Thriller". No wonder Coach Tomlin nicknamed him "Delicious."
XIII-A tragic and sad story about a former NFL "High School Coach of the Year", Ed Thompson, from Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Iowa. The coach was apparently shot in the head by a young man while assisting players in the schools weight room. Coach Thompson won two state titles and coached four current NFL players. A tragic story for the small Iowa Community.
XIV-First round draft pick Ziggy Hood has completed two interviews with the Steelers official website taken from fans questions. The first part is here, and the second part is linked here. My favorite question and answer was:
The Steelers have an amazing history on the defensive line back to the days of the Steel Curtain. What is it like to be a part of that?
"Right now it’s a big reputation I am trying to live up to. It’s going to be hard to ever have to fill the shoes of guys like Brett Keisel, Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith. Those guys have done something many others might not get the chance to. I am trying to live through their footsteps and do what they do."
XL-This video is all over the web so my apologies if you have already seen it but it is definitely a video that reminded me that YouTube can be great. For every ten cats playing pianos and dogs singing "happy birthday", there are one or two gems like this. Be warned though, you might actually get the tune stuck in your head, it has been stuck in mine for the last 2 days.
XLIII- The Texas Longhorns College Baseball team tied up the series last night with a dominating 5-1 performance. Tonight is game three of the series and will decide who is the College World Series Champion between the LSU Tigers and the Longhorns. Hook em' Horns.

Holmes said in the article he wants to retire a Steeler
If you get an opportunity to read the entire article (I subscribe to it and read it this past week), Holmes says that he’s always been a Steelers fan growing up and that he wants to play his whole career in Pittsburgh. Holmes will probably be able to make more money on his next contract if he leaves Pittsburgh, but the Steelers will offer him a good deal next year while he is in the last year of his deal to stay. Hopefully, playing with Ben will be an enticement to stay, too.
Woodley and Holmes will be the first in line next off-season to get paid. Those are two deals that the team will have to get done. I think Holmes is this team’s official Ravens-killer.

good news datruth
Just reading what was on-line he said nothing about wanting to continue with the Steelers.

Yup
I’m a subscriber to the magazine too. And he did say he wanted to spend his whole career in Pittsburgh. I remember him and his friend waving Terrible Towels when he got drafted and ESPN mentioned that he was a lifelong Steelers fan.
He is a Raven’s killer and I like the side article in the magazine about his friendship with Raven’s QB Troy Smith and how Holmes always makes a big play against them. And how Smith was hooting and hollering when Holmes made the catch in the Super Bowl.
He also had THE best comment about Holmes.
He said he was thinking while watching the SB after Holmes missed the first catch in the endzone, “You better go back to him, because he’ll make the play, because he hates to make mistakes.”

Glad that...
Holes acknowledged that the truly great part of that superbowl TD was Ben’s throw and not his catch.
by Johnny_S on Jun 24, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Sorry, but the catch was pretty money too. Only a dozen WRs could make that catch…though Ben may be the only QB with the balls and ability to put that ball there.
Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

Never said it wasn’t a “pretty money” catch. I simply said the throw was more remarkable than the catch, which is why I still think today Ben shoulda been the MVP of the SB.

The catch
was just an average football catch

LOL
sorry – I was not going for some sort of bizarre sarcasm, I was just quoting Holmes from the article.
by SteelerBuddha on Jun 24, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Average no.
How many times does a reciver drop a pass to him when a defender flashes by even if the defender does not touch the ball. There were three defenders there, so no not average.
But Ben should have been MVP. The good news is Ben still needs two to catch and three to pass Bradshaw for SB MVP’s.

Is that really Mendenhall?
I’m not sure about that being Mendenhall. Vella Dance is located in Bridgeville, PA and assuming this is supposed to be Rashard in his younger years, he went to Highschool/College in Illonois…If this is supposed to be recent, I doubt Rashard is taking Dance classes and performing during the off season. We’d hear more about that anyway.
The guy looks to tall/thin anyway.

Personally I like…
Right now I would probably compare myself to Aaron Smith. I am trying to mimic everything he does. I want to do that because he has been so successful.

Great interview with Holmes
Such a talented young man. I just wish he showed a bit more confidence in himself and his abilities.
by SteelerBuddha on Jun 24, 2009 1:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Seriously
I like the confidence but it’s a bit much. I think that on any other team, Holmes could fast turn into the prima donna receiver that the league seems to thrive on. I think he’s good – with the potential to be great , but there were 18 other receivers in the AFC last year who caught more balls then him. One of them was some old dude on his team. And yet this guy is talking unabashadly about the hall of fame.
Yes he is better then his stats. Yes I respect a guy who his big goals.
But I do think that it would be nice to hear more about Super Bowls and success as an offense than about the HOF. 3 more superbowls like the last one will put him in the Hall much faster then catching 110 balls next season. I hope he remembers that and continues to make the sacrifices of playing within a system.

This pisses me off
Q: Who’s better, Buckeyes fans or Steelers fans?
A: In Pittsburgh, everywhere you go, you’re going to see somebody in black and gold. But I see Ohio State people everywhere, period. Walk through any airport, and you’ll see people with the scarlet and gray on. “O-H!” And they will turn around: “I-O!” And you just keep walking.
Lies, pure lies. I’m sorry to any Ohio State fans, but I’ve never seen someone wearing an Ohio State Jersey in person, EVER. I’m not saying their fanbase is bad but I see far more Steeler apparel “everywhere” than I will ever see with Ohio State. He makes it sound as if Steeler Nation is limited only to Pittsburgh.
It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

Yeah he is dead wrong on that
I am sure the sales of Steeler gear is leaps and bounds ahead of Buckeye stuff. I’ve seen Ohio jerseys around MD, but tons more Steeler gear.
by Johnny_S on Jun 24, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well you are in Jersey :) j/k
Got to love fans. I am sure if he answered the other way, he would have pissed off some Buckeye fans. It is not a fair question as you can not compare the two. College and Pro football are two different animals. Pro sports have a much larger fan base and are more marketable.
I think the point they were trying to get at is both fan bases travel extremely well. You can see it at away game attendance. You can go and find a Buckeye bar in every state just like you find a Steeler bar. The last time I was in Vegas I found a sports bar to watch the Buckeyes. It was filled with all Buckeyes fans and 2 guys who like ND that was watching the game on a 12 inch screen. The next day I went to the same bar and watched the Steelers game. It was all Steeler fans and a guy watching the Cowboys on that same 12 inch screen.
What I do like is he is still connected to his college team, and I really respect that trait from all the young NFL players. I have wrote this before, but is it is truly fun to watch Tone on the sidelines at Cincy and Browns game. The OH- IO cant starts, and he is doing it on the sideline. He makes plays and OSU fans are torn whether to cheer.

hmm. Des he realize that he probably saw these fans when he was a player...
at airports where the OSU fans would probably fly to as well. ‘Wow, there’s OSU fans EVERYWHERE!’
I see at least 10x more Steelers logos on stuff than I see OSU stuff.

Steelers > OSU
I grew up in southeastern Ohio in the 70’s, about the same distance from Pittsburgh as Columbus, and saw a lot more Ohio State paraphernalia than Steelers gear.
That said, we vacationed in Montréal earlier this month and the only sports team I actually saw anyone representing (besides me with my Penguins pin, and all the hockey stuff in the tourist shops) was the Steelers. One guy with a logo on his shirt, and another guy wearing a Bettis jersey. The big guy wearing 36 looked like he was an elementary school teacher or camp counselor — he was with a bunch of small children — and I thought to myself how great it was that he was introducing these Canadian kids to Steeler Nation.
Maybe these guys were showing their support for the Penguins over the Red Wings? I didn’t see either hockey team’s logo up north.

I do like this though
Willie Parker, Hines Ward, Heath Miller, myself, Ben Roethlisberger—we can make the Pro Bowl any time we want to. With that chemistry we have … (we) should be looking forward to making the playoffs every year.

Mike Wallace - Remember the Name
It won’t be long before everyone in Pittsburgh and the NFL knows his name. And yes, I will take credit for being the first person here to mention his name on this board and include him in a mock draft to us.
The Steelers picked up a bad, bad, bad (as in good) man. You’ll see.

You weren’t the only one; after his beastly combine I thought of him as a possibility. However to your credit, you probably knew about him before that and I originally thought that Mike Thomas was a better prospect.
I took Wallace for a spin in NCAA 09 against my friend. 20 catches 325+ yards 4 TD’s=Money.

Ed Thomas was a great man
I am from Iowa. I live about 80 miles from Parkersburg and have family that lives there. It is ridiculous that someone can even stoop that low. Ed was the only thing that kept that town going after the tornado one year ago destroyed half the city. That is what the people looked forward to was the first football game of the season. They fixed the football field first, before much of the town. My cousin graduated with Casey Wieggman and played under Thomas. Sad day.

from the online interview, i didnt seem anything to be concerned about holmes
he says he wants to make the hall, and we all know the best way to do that is to produce himself and win championships. and holmes realizes you can’t win championships without a good team. yes, he’s in this for himself but he knows he can’t do this alone. and you have to be a lil selfish to be a great athlete

Dang straight, The great realize how good they are with the ball, and hence want more of it. The greatest know how to do that while boosting their teammates and making the team better. Holmes is a team guy who gave honest answers about his goals. I like it.

Holmes is a prima donna, like most WRs as robert ethan likes to point out (other than his lovechild Mike Wallace). I’m okay with that…as long as he keeps his mouth in check (HOF talk doesn’t count, that’s just being cocky and confident), doesn’t destroy his team like some of them, and stays the hell away from illegal activities (in the future). If he does those three things, I have no problems with him.
