The King of Pop is gone

According to the LA Times Michael Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest and later died at the UCLA medical center.I grew up a Jackson 5 and MJ fan and was looking forward to his comeback.  This is indeed a sad day for his fans and admirers. I know some of you must have some favorite moments of MJs amazing career that you enjoyed.  He will be sorely missed.  God speed Mickey.  I will be rocking some tunes to help send you on your way.

I have no idea how to react to that

I was born after the last sane years MJ had. He was no saint, but I don’t think he should die. Still Supersteeler’s point is valid; i think there’s also a lot of people who are happy. One crazy world I tell ya.

It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

by HighSchoolSteeler on Jun 25, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

From my understanding...

All allegations were dropped. I have a hard time believing all of the accusations were from those seeking money and/or limelight. It’s really sad, because I feel a man with such talent and goodness in his heart had a really tainted reputation. I will admit, MJ ended up appearing to be very bizarre in his appearance and actions, but with his troubled childhood and subsequent fame, its not really that abstract that he struggled to parallel society’s ideal norm. I know that I will, and I hope many others can, remember him for being an outstanding performer and gifted musician who provided us with two of the greatest albums of all time.

I personally grew up listening and dancing to his music. I am troubled and saddened at his early departure from our world, just months before his attempted revival tour. I hope that in his death, he may find the peace that has eluded him for so long.

I hated his music

It sounded like over-produced garbage. And his lyrics were bad as well. I have no clue why the rest of the world loved him so much, even to the point of disregarding report after report about his conduct with children.

I feel for his family but I was in no way a fan. To me he will always be the precursor to boy bands and the reason R&B stopped sounding like Donnie Hathaway and started sounding like 98 Degrees.

it never got weird enough for me

by JerseyFresh on Jun 25, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

What?

You are a first my friend. Honestly 98 degrees is far from MJ. His music isnt the reason why we got those guys lol, its mostly teenage girls lol.

by tannofsteel84 on Jun 29, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying he had anything to do with the boy band concept. I just mean that the “R&B” of the 80’s and 90’s had nothing to do with rhythm or blues. I feel that a lot of people were trying to emulate this over the top big budget music. And I think that the actual art in the music was secondary at best. His lyrics were stupid, typical filler. And his beats were weak. I’ll take Prince’s worst song over MJ’s best any day of the week. I think his true claim to fame was his marketing team who created all the hype.

You are in the vast minority on that one.

His record sales on Thriller speak for itself.

by Johnny_S on Jun 29, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Your right

I know there must be something I’m not getting. I have friends who have a great knowledge of music who love his stuff. I’m cool with being in the minority about some things, but your statement about record sales proves nothing to me. I mean Hanson was at the top of the charts too, I don’t trust the American public to have great taste in any of the arts.

it never got weird enough for me

by JerseyFresh on Jun 29, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanson...

Didn’t have nearly every song on their album hit #1 (and they had one song of any significance [significance is definately not the right word]), Michael did, on two different albums. I don’t like his music either, but apparently alot of people do. Michael Jackson to Hanson is like comparing the Beatles to Chumbawumba, it’s not fair.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 30, 2009 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Hanson? Seriously?

That’s the comparison you go with? Its clear your friends are the ones with music knowledge, and not you. Thriller has the 2nd most albums sold of all time (over 27 million), after the eagle’s greatest hits. And it could likely overtake the #1 spot after these next couple of weeks. I doubt Hanson’s album even sold 3 million copies. Your comparison and your argument are laughable.

You may or may not like Michael Jackson, but undeniably he had one of the largest impacts on music of all time. He bridged the gap between R&B and Pop, he lead the way for pretty much the majority of hit music today, he created the modern music video, and jump started MTV.

You can say you didn’t like his music, but when you say it was garbage you are simply wrong. There is no argument to be had.

by Johnny_S on Jun 30, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

OK?

First off my opinion isn’t wrong, thats impossible because it’s MY opinion. I have the right to think a song is garbage, freedom of choice is funny like that. You again mention album sales and tell me that the general public has purchased more Eagles greatest hits albums than anything else. That goes to show your their taste.

As for questioning my music knowledge, I’ve forgotten more than you’ll ever know about music my friend. From Al Green to Peter Brotzmann to Jackson C Frank to Leanord Cohen to Baka to Antonin Dvorak. I love all music. Album sales have nothing to do with real music.

And yes he did bridge R&B and pop. Thats one of the things I hate about him, I hate that theres such a disconnect between Marvin Gaye and todays R&B.

it never got weird enough for me

by JerseyFresh on Jun 30, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

You compared the King of Pop to Hanson. Your argument holds no water. That’s probably why you retreated to the ole “My Opinion” argument.

Yes, I mention album sales, because it is one of the only statistical ways to measure how successful an artist’s album was.

And now you are just starting to sound like one of those snobby artsy people. Michael Jackson was great for music, hard a tremendous impact on it, and will always be remembered for it. Sorry buddy, there is nothing you can do about it.

by Johnny_S on Jun 30, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

You just said it was wrong to compare Hanson to Jackson, then you tell me that the only “statistical way to measure how successful an album was” is to measure album sales. So in your circular logic my argument holds no water because I compared 2 artists that went to the top of the charts? Again, the reason I would bring up Hanson or Ricky Martin or any of the other goofy group is to show that the american public has a history of buying shitty music. The only reason I make that argument is to say that album sales mean squat.

And yes I “retreated” to the whole opinion argument because you told me mine was “wrong”.And I come off as a snob because you said I have no music knowledge while it is a great hobby of mine. Hey the Jonas brothers are at the top of the charts now, tell me how good they are.

Shame that we loose him and Farrah on the same day yet someone like Jane Fonda lives on.

I guess don't speak ill of the dead no longer exists...

I didn’t like his music, or his outside of music doings, but, my god, to make jokes about a person, just hours after his death. I understand, what he was accused of doing, with mountains of evidence backing up the accusations, a weird lifestyle, surgeries, I see the whole of it, but he man just died people. I’ve made jokes at his expense very recently (like past three days), but come on. If you have nothing good to say, say nothing. I didn’t hear too many Mike Tyson jokes after he lost his daughter, rest her soul. May God have mercy on a man who will need it.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 26, 2009 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Speaking strictly on his pop star status

One must wonder if there will ever be another like him. Michael Jackson OWNED the music world for a very long time. With the advanced technology and media outlets I suspect there will never be anyone who captures the world like he did. I remember staying up to watch “Friday Night Videos” to catch a tune of my fav pop stars and actually reading magazines when they came out to find out stories about them also. In the present, there is typically less than 1 to 24 hours before anything and everything is all over the web, your phone and the TV. The mystical part of pop stars is gone, there are no secrets or anticipation involved anymore.

And by the way, there is only one person deserving of the acronym MJ, and he wore #23.

Michael

Despite any flaws in his character…the accusations…the personal dislike for his music…the man was an icon and the man is dead. Have we as a society become so callous because his passing may not have personally affected us? Personally, I respect death. IMO it is nothing to joke about or make light of. Michael Jackson’s talent brought a lot of Joy and Happiness to many in this world. RIP Michael. God is your severest critic now.

by steelersrock08 on Jun 26, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Michael is in God’s hands now and He alone will decide if forgiveness or punishment is appropriate. Who here truly knows what Michael Jackson may or may not have done? Leave the judging to a higher power and show a little class. Now is clearly not the time for childish jokes.

by King Coebra on Jun 26, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Get off your high horse

I’ll make or laugh at any jokes I want, and make any comments I want. Not everyone believes in a “higher power”.

by worldtrip on Jun 26, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Way to go

You are absolutely right. You ARE entitled to laugh, joke and make any comments you want to. But I also have the right to point out how utterly tactless and untimely your and others’ childish “jokes” truly are. I really don’t care what beliefs you may or may not have. My point is that ridiculing the dead is sad, pathetic and juvenile. Things, I might add, that you appear to excel at. Congratulations on piling on a deceased and defenseless human being. Way to go.

by King Coebra on Jun 26, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait a minute...

If one feels that Jackson was a horrible person for being a pedophile and robbing children of their innocence. Then why would it be so wrong to laugh that this monster is dead? I mean would you brow beat people if they belittled a pervert who didn’t make pop-music? I guess we can laugh about anybody we feel deserve it once they die.

Finally

Thank you for finally getting to the heart of the matter and not resorting to immature jokes to state why you dislike Jackson. At least you were adult enough to actually address what is actually bothering you in a serious and nonjoking manner (followup commentary aside).

Molestation is not a joking or a laughing matter. I don’t find any humor in the topic at all. Do you? Do you think that victims of child molestation would find any humor in some of the above comments? Molestation is a very real and a very serious topic. It is entirely possible, and actually quite likely, that several folks who post or visit this forum have been victims of such abuse in the past. Do you think they would find any humor in these jokes? The jokes are just as if not more disparaging to the actual victims of this type of abuse than they are to Jackson, but why would anybody think about that before posting this drivel?

Jackson was never found guilty in a court of law. He was not a registered sex offender. Is it possible he was guilty? Yes. Is it possible he was not. Yes. I don’t know for sure. Neither do you, or anybody else on this site unless they were personally abused by Jackson. And, if that is the case, then my sincerest apologies go out to you. I’m not in the judging business, because I don’t know all the facts and cannot condemn a man based on public perception or perceived guilt as portrayed by the media.

I do have faith and believe that Jackson will be judged by a higher power. In the meantime, why don’t those of us still on this planet act with a bit more class and realize that child abuse and molestation is not something to be taken lightly. Put yourself in the place of a victim and see if you still think these cracks are witty and funny.

Thank You

At least some understand the seriousness of the underlying issues. Thanks for being one of them.

My apology was with regards to my incorrect assumption that the writer had previously posted earlier in the thread when they had not. I try to admit when I have made a mistake.

It’s hard to believe so many find the topics of molestation and death laughing matters. How very sad indeed.

by King Coebra on Jun 27, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

amen to that

I honestly didn’t mind the jokes, but do feel they are a bit tasteless. Its funny how people like to convict someone even if our judicial system hasn’t. To my that just shows a lack of faith in the judicial system which well be well warranted. But the idea innocent until proven guilty was created with the intent to prevent stuff like this. But it seems like their are so many “weak” minded individuals in this country that they believe whatever they see on tv. I don’t know what the man did but I’m not in the position to speculate. I didn’t know the man so the death isn’t personal to me like it is for millions of other people, but I still respect it.

RIP Michael

Great entertainer, always sad when a legend passes on. James Brown, Michael Jackson, George Carlin, we’re losing a lot of good ones.

No need to drag him through the dirt and I don’t mind reflecting on the good because for whatever he may have done here to people he will be punished 10 fold if there is a hell.

You guys are so wrong.

Michael Jackson wasn’t a child molester. If he was a child molester or molested children more than one parent would have pressed charges against Mike, I’m talking like more than 8 parents. In that 2005 case, the mother of that child was hooked to the money that Michael was paying to cure her son of cancer. After the child was cured, the King of Pop pointed that his responsibilities were done and payments would stop. So, yeah, the mother of that boy want the money so she cried oh my son was molested. I will always remember Michael Jackson as the King of Pop. R.I.P. MJ

I loved MJ’s music. Jackson was never tried nor convicted for any crime. Innocent until proven guilty in my book (a policy which also applies to, say, James Harrison). I had always hoped that somehow his life would improve and not be so tragic. I guess not.
