Tomlinism Tournament First Round Match 1
OK Steeler Nation, its time for us to decide our favorite Tomlinism. In an earlier post we solicited a list of your favorite Tomlinisms. I have compiled 12 of them. I have seeded all 12 accordingly after getting a feel from the earlier post. Very unscientific, but it's just for fun. The top four seeds get a first-round bye. Now time for the First Round Match 1. Please vote for the Tomlinism you like the best.

Ooh, that's tough
The first one is a zippier one-liner, but the second one is such a great example of his leadership. Looks like the rest of the voters so far are divided as well.
Hey 'rose
Do you think we can see the seeds? I had to think on this matchup for a while ;)
Guns don't kill people. Lamar Woodley kills people.
Here are the seeds
Of course, quite arbitrary…
- Seed: "The more I understand Steeler Nation, the more it drives me. From the outside looking in, you respect it. Being a part of it is different (explaining what drives him to deliver for Steeler Nation)
- Seed: “Every day I walk by five Lombardi Trophies, not five rushing titles” (in response to Willie Parker publicly stating that the Steelers needed to run the ball more)
- Seed: “It is not hunger that drives me. Hunger and thirst can be quenched. We have to be a driven group. We have to seek greatness” (in a reflective moment after the Super Bowl when asked how to keep the hunger of winning)
- Seed: “We don’t buy into that hocus pocus. We need to beat Baltimore once, not three times” (when questioned about how hard it might be to beat a team three times before the AFC Championship Game)
- Seed: “I’m wearing black so that my players won’t complain about the heat, because they know I don’t care” (after a summer camp day)
- Seed: “I don’t care how my players evaluate me. I evaluate them. How’s your editor?” (bristled after a reporter asked him about his players thoughts of their coach)
- Seed: “I don’t want to hear about injuries. The standard of expectation does not change” (in response to a reporter after several key injuries began mounting in 2007)
- Seed: “Iron sharpens iron” (using the Scriptures to explain that one of the hardest schedules in NFL history was actually a good thing, typical of Tomlin)
- Seed: “The line allows the linebackers to rush, the rush makes the coverage better. Together we all eat” (explaining in four brilliant words the essence of teamwork)
- Seed: “You’ve got to under-promise and over-deliver” (telling Limas Sweed after Sweed talked a better game than he played in 2008)
- Seed: “We shall defend every blade of grass” (talking about his defense giving every ounce on every play)
- Seed: “We’ve got a big windshield and a small rear view mirror” (after being asked to reflect on his Super Bowl XLIII victory)

I hate technology
Or perhaps my lack thereof…They made everything “1” and now I can’t correct…But they are in order

Man,
The windshield line was great. But wearing black. . . that’s straight Gangster.
Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?
I appreciate the windshield line. It makes me confident about the Steelers' chances in the future.
But I’ve got to choose the second, because this is where it all started. It was the first day of his first training camp, before he had proven himself or won over much of the team who had reportedly wanted Grimm or Whiz. I love the “I’m not going to take any crap” attitude.
Yeah, 12 looked weak in the regular season, but it has one of the top DVOA’s.

#5
Is such a tricky one to figure out. It performs so well in the pre-season, but come October it just disappears.
Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.
Yeah, a candy ass schedule and a feeling of entitlement will do that. Good thing “Iron sharpens iron”
I hope someone asks Tomlin about that quote this year: “Last year you said you were excited about the tough schedule because ‘iron sharpens iron’. With one of the easiest schedules in the league this year, do you feel you’ll be dull by the time the playoffs arrive?”

Final Four - 3, 12, 9, 6
I like 3 (hunger vs. drive) to beat out the windshield line.
“Together we eat” is great too, tho. And 6 – “How’s your editor” – is the funniest, IMO.
I like Tomlin’s reverence of Steeler Nation in the #1 seed, but it’s just not as well-worded as the others.
Ken Barnard
Maryrose
I thought his line for Seed #4 was “We don’t subscribe to that hocus pocus…”
Sorry about the double post…
You might be right. I can change that before game-time.

Number 12
I voted for number 12, because it reminds of the attitude that Noll had. We can only hope that his similarity of approach and attitude leads to a similar run of SBs.

Number 12 is one we all can use.....
Rather than sit around and admire our past accomplishments, we should concentrate on what’s out there in front of us. (This was said around the time when CT noted that the playoffs and Super Bowl run had put the Steelers 30 days behind the also-rans in planning for the 2010 season).
Seeing these 12 Tomlinisms in a list kinda gives me chicken skin. Wow! No wonder this guy was able to lead a team with some obvious weaknesses to the Lombardi Trophy in only his second year. He’s smarter than any of us, and a better leader of men than any of us. When he opens his mouth, his players listen. And so do we.
In fact, we even collect his quotes, and put them in a list of favorites.
it's a real treat to have such a cunning linguist as the Steelers coach
You could tell back in 2007, the guy just knows what to say. He’d be interesting even if he coached a different team. Tomlin really is special.
"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."
One of my favorites but not listed
Tomlin asked about the possibly retirement of coaching legend LeBeau:
“I won’t be around when he wants to have that conversation.”
Classic Tomlin. Concise yet meaningful and poignant.
