Player Poll

So, This being my first post on BTSC, and any site for that matter..let me start with some simple questions, and ones that I do ponder myself quite a bit.

First off, If you were say..put in the position to Build a team..salary not in play , would You rather have a James Harrison or a Lamar Woodley..and for that matter, Who do you think is the better OLB overall . Personally I feel Lamar Woodley is already a superstar, and has great potential for improvement still..and consider him the better of the two right now.

But the ability of Harrison to slip Oline and rush the QB is quite impressive as well, possibly better than Woodley.

Another thing, Ryan Clark..I feel he is possibly the most under rated Safety in football...it perhaps is because he is placed aside the most dominating defensive player in football Mr. Polamalu.

That being said..if the chance to pick up One of the two elite college safety in the draft next year arrives.. Should the steelers possibly trade up to pick one of them up?

And just out of curiousity ...Who is your 'Favorite Player' on the Steelers? I would just like to get a feel for the people who read and post on here.

I don’t think Woodley is as good as Harrison, and as “little” as stats mean I don’t think you’ll be able to find a stat that supports your claim. Harrison is a better pass rusher than Woodley. Woodley has some good moves, but isn’t as “clever” at setting up the tackle, and relies on his highly effective bull rush a lot. I think Harrison is better at attacking the QB and when he gets there is a ridiculous force at FFing which Woodley is picking up on. I think if Woodley were forced to play on Deebo’s side he would end up having a harder time. James succeeds on his side because he can use his speed around the tackles. He uses his speed around the edge to set up his bull-rush. James could also succeed on Woodley’s side. I don’t think Woodley would be as effective on James side.

If I were setting up a franchise and money was no issue AND I could have the player for the rest of their career? I’d take Woodley hands down. Woodley is a machine and picked up his coverage duties with amazing speed. I don’t think Harrison will get much better. I can’t wait to see Woodley in another year or two.

Ryan Clark is not that good. He fits in well with what the steelers do, but he wouldn’t be a star on any other team. I’d be happy if Ryan Clark stayed a steeler through another contract, but I think he is benefiting from the overabundance of talent around him, not the other way around. He’s an important cog, but he is ultimately replaceable, as is certainly not one of the most underrated safeties in the league. Speaking of replacing…if Mundy can be his replacement or we can roll with Troy, Clark, Mundy…I don’t see the steelers drafting one of the safeties you speak of. We already have a lot of money invested in the defense and we have some big contracts coming up (like your friend Woodley) that we need to be mindful of. The steelers need a NT next year and need any position along the O-line.

It’s possible to win the superbowl with an ungodly defense and a terrible defense. I think the odds are better of winning with a #1-5 defense and a #1-5 offense though, and I think the offense is half an O-line away from being there.

I’m not religious, but A. Smith embodies everything I ever want to see in a player, or a person.

Yeah, agree on Smith as well. He’s a great guy, does the dirty work without complaining, and he’s a heck of a player.

I haven’t really thought about what we’re going to do in the draft next year, but Sunshine is referring to Eric Berry and Taylor Mays, who are both LaRon Landry type prospects who both could be gone in the top 15 picks. They’re productive guys with CB speed. If we could get either at 32, I’d think long and hard about it. Depending on how our 2 young DL’s work out, we might be able to get by without spending our first rounder on a NT, and we’ve all been clamouring for an OL for 3 years now. You don’t think they’d draft one in the first now, do you?

Not really, but I need something to hold on to. Personally I hope we target enormous slow guys as the perfect fit to our zone blocking scheme.

If either of those guys fell to 32 I’d be all for it, and I assume the steelers would be as well. However, I wouldn’t want to see them trade up, say, 11 spots for yet another safety.

Yeah, the last time we traded up for a safety was a disaster. ;)

But you should be safe. Tomlin hasn’t really traded much anyways. They seem to be content sitting tight and taking the best guy on their board. Or at least that’s what they’ve done so far with Tomlin. In the lower rounds I think they target guys and move around a bit more when the stakes are a little lower.

Next year looks sick deep on D-line, I expect a DT or DE to fall to us that the FO loves, and then the line will be pretty well set. Unless they really like some guys later, I could even see us trading out of the first to get two seconds and a third or fourth thrown in.

I don’t see trading up in a year with a lot of depth at a position you need to draft. Also with Clark and Mundy we have some depth, and if the rook struggled with the role even a little he might not make second string his first season. If the guys gonna sit, we aren’t giving up a lot to get him. You also don’t want to pay two Safeties big money.

Sure he can score goals, but can he cook?

Oh and my favorite player is Woodley, my boy from UofM. He was tied with Larry Foote, but that is all over now. Still love you Larry!

Welcome to BTSC

1. Harrison is the better player right now, and I think there are few who would disagree. However, Woodley is more valuable for a franchise since, as you said, he’s younger and will only get better (which is scary), whereas Harrison has probably just about peaked and can’t sustain his current level of play deep into his 30’s. That said, I’m glad we have both of them locked up for a few years to come.

oops - posted before I meant to

2. I disagree about Clark. I think he’s pretty average, which I’m happy with considering the Carter/Smith combo we saw in 2007. I like him as a guy, and I think he’s a good compliment to Troy. And yes, I’d take a safety next year if I felt I was getting good value, unless someone (Townsend, Lewis, Lewis, Mundy) emerged as a really good safety. Even then, there’s nothing wrong with having Troy and an Ed Reed clone on the same defense. You can never have too many guys in the secondary these days – Carter got way too much playing time last year.

3. And finally, I really like Troy, Deebo, and MeMo. Troy’s just a cool guy and an outstanding player. I love how hard Harrison plays on every down – he was simply awe inspiring in 2007, and even better in 2008. MeMo’s the little guy I’ll always be rooting for on offense – just excels at whatever is asked of him and helped us rediscover the short passing attack.

Welcome fellow Steeler faithful

Without relative factors such as age or salary I would have to go with Harrison. At this point he is a better all around player as well as a team leader. However, when you add mitigating factors into the mix I would go with Woodley. I think he’s a great young player who will only get better, as well as the fact that he currently makes about 1/10th of the money Harrison is currently making.

As far as Clark is concerned, I do think he is a bit underrated. But he will need to be replaced at some point and even though it sounds as though Ryan Mundy is showing some progress, it would definitely be nice if we were in a position to take one of the top two safeties in next years draft, although it will be highly unlikely.

Taylor Mays of USC and Eric Berry of Tennessee will both be top 15 picks, and probably in the top 10. Mays may be the one with flash and measurables like having a 4.29 40 time and being over 6ft tall, but I think Eric Berry would be a perfect fit for the Steelers. He’s a ferocious hitter with an Ed Reed-like nose for the ball.

Harrison is the better LB right now. He just won the DPOY award which is really hard to do. When it is all said and done, I do not know who will be better, but right now it has to be James Harrison.

Thought provoking... I like

I’d still take Harrison, but Woodley seems to be closing the gap, at least a little.
In regards to the safeties in the draft, I’d love to see Taylor Mays (my pick of the two) or Eric Berry in black and gold, but realisticly it doesn’t look possible. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I was a fan of trading out of the first round this year in an attempt to get a higher pick next year and maybe snagging one of the two. But that ship has sailed.
Favorite player? Polamalu, do I really need to give a reason? I think not.

Welcome to the site… enjoy. Look forward to some more posts like this.

Your first question says one thing and your poll says another.

Your first question is who would you rather build a team around…for my money their is no question that is Woodley. He has many, many, years of dominant football left as where Harrison has about 4 to 5 max.

The poll just says who is better at this point in their career and I think the reigning Defensive player of the year is the obvious choice.

Nothing like a good thought provoker

To build a team around, I think Woodley because he’s younger and the future. Better right now has to be Mr. Harrison and that wonderful hardware he picked up this year.

Clark is terrific; terrific in this scheme where he fills the need and compliments Troy so well. Until he joined the Steelers, I don’t recall that he did too much. Right place, right time. Probably underated though.

In the draft, if you have a chance to get a talent, I think you need to take it when it presents itself. Whether or not Clark is long-term is immaterial – injuries can happen, etc. Some talent just can’t be coached so if you have it front of you, you have to grab it.

Favorite Steelers today….A. Smith, J. Farrior, H. Ward, Mr. Harrison and L. Woodley. Wow, left off Troy, Heath…. M. Moore showed me a lot last year….not a lot I don’t like when I get down to it. Tough question.

Parker

My favorite player that is with the Steelers is Willie Parker. He has an impressive story coming off out of college undrated to becoming an elite half back. He gets alot of wrap on this site for his injuries these past two seasons, but when he can push through it..he is an amazing player with exceptional drive and determination. He is a class act as a player too. He gets way too much put on him, and with our medeocre blocking schemes on the up the middle runs, he has no choice but to get tackled hard for losses.

Give the dude some credit, he has 3 1000+ yard seasons, and the longest td run in SB history from scrimmage….He’ll retire in Black and Gold
