BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- Bowling H.O.F. Edition
IX-Santonio Holmes has bulked up big time according to the Tribune Review, he has gained over 10 pounds all mainly in his upper body. He played last year at around 190 pounds but it looking to play around 195 pounds next season. He has been training at "Tom Shaw Performance" at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The only real concern with Ton' gaining weight would be if it affects his speed, which I doubt it will if he plans on dropping back down to the 190's.
X-The Steelers have multiple players who have been graced with the honor of being apart of the Hall of Fame; I'm not talking about the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, I'm talking about the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame. Jerome Bettis was the first celebrity induction and now Lynn Swan was recently inducted as the third celebrity member. The Steelers have more players in the Bowling Hall of Fame than the Ravens' have in the actual NFL Hall of Fame. (That's for you Mr. Malor)
XIII-A follow up to the supposed breaking news from Mike Tomlin on Rashard Mendenhall. The NFL network talked up the quote from Tomlin like he was going to say Mendenhall was going to break Erik Dickersons' single season rushing record, but instead, Tomlin just did what Mike Tomlin does. Here's the quote:
"He’s got to put himself back into the offense. I am not responsible for Rashard Mendenhall’s role in the offense. He is."
XIV-Internationally the United States might not be able to get over the hurdle in futbal, but in football the Americans are rolling. The United States crushed the French in the Junior World Championship of American Football. They won 78-0 and had 610 total yards compared to the France's seven. Add this to the long list of reason why the French hate Americans.
XL-Starting center, Justin Hartwig discusses his thoughts after winning Super Bowl XLIII with ESPN, and ESPN AFC North takes a brief look at who will be the next to sign a contract extension.
XLIII-More meaningless lists of who are the best NFL players. Today it is the Top 50 NFL players going into the 2009 NFL season from CBS sportsline. Three Steelers are on the list, Ben Roethlisberger (10th), James Harrison (15th), and Troy Polamalu (35th) were all on the list. Lamar Woodley was also an honarlbe mention. Any objections?

An interesting side story
This has nothing to do with football, but you might find it interest.
I’m an ex-Marine who like many Americans has long considered the French to be thankless dogs regarding their attitude towards Americans, considering so many G.I.s shed their life’s blood in part to free their country from foreign invaders. (I had an uncle that hit the beaches at Normandy.)
After reading “Jackdaws” by Kew Follett, I searched the Internet recently for factual information concerning the fate of female collaborators in post-war France. I came across the following, which caused me to reconsider my former opinions.
By the way…here’s hoping that Frank the Tank runs like a greyhound and hits like a Panzer.
excerpt from: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/jun/05/women-victims-d-day-landings-second-world-war
…The French, meanwhile, were shocked by the attitude of some American soldiers, who seemed to think that when it came to young French women “everything can be bought”. After an evening’s drinking, they would knock on farmhouse doors asking if there was a “mademoiselle” for them. Supposedly useful gambits were provided by the US Armed Forces publication Stars and Stripes, including daily French lessons regarding phrases such as: “My wife doesn’t understand me.”
Americans and British saw liberated Paris not just as a symbol of Europe’s freedom from Nazi oppression, but as a playground for their amusement. “As we neared the city we were seized by a wild sort of excitement,” wrote Pogue. “We began to giggle, to sing, yell and otherwise show exuberance.” But when Pogue reached Paris, he was shaken to find that American military authorities had taken over the Petit Palais and erected a large sign announcing the distribution of free condoms to US troops. In Pigalle, rapidly dubbed “Pig Alley” by GIs, French prostitutes were coping with more than 10,000 men a day. The French were also deeply shocked to see US soldiers lying drunk on the pavements of the Place Vendôme. The contrast with off-duty German troops, who had been forbidden even to smoke in the street, could hardly have been greater.

Troy rated 35th? Really?
I find it hard to believe that Troy is rated below the likes of Ryan Clady, a tackle who was a rookie last year, Darnell Dockett, Patrick Willis, and Adrian Wilson. The ONLY safety that should be rated higher than Troy is Ed Reed. And from a Defensive value stand point, almost no one is as valuable as The Tasmanian Devil.
by big_jay71 on Jun 30, 2009 1:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would disagree on a minor point.
In the context in which they play, Adrian Wilson means 5 times as much to the sad, sad Cardinals’ defense, as Troy means to our defense. If you take 43 out of there, we still have a hard, tough defense, though one that is changed. If you take Adrian Wilson out of Zona, they’ve got no game on the hard side of the ball at all. In the context, he is more valuable, though in direct comparison I would say he is not.
Guns don't kill people. Lamar Woodley kills people.

But its not an MVP list.
It is purely a Top fifty players list. Therefore it should be as if they are all in a lineup on a magical draft where they all wear the same uniform.
You are correct, if this was the top MVP 50 list Wilson would do much more for the Cards pathetic Defense than Troy does for our epic one (although hes a huge component).

Don't worry about Santonio's speed
I’m sure if you put on ten pounds of muscle during an offseason while working out at an elite speed camp to get faster, that is a good thing. And even though he’s getting faster, he still isn’t faster than my boy Mike Wallace.
Wallace is already 6’0, 200 lbs, so where does he go from here? I’ll give you a hint: someone who in three years will be 6’0, 210 lbs. and form one of the most potent WR tandems in the NFL with Santonio Holmes. You’ll have two starting WR’s on the outside with 4.3 speed that are game-breakers and that can make the tough catches.
Sorry to break the news to all you Limas Sweed fans.

He gets more turnovers
So his stat line looks better. That’s about it. They don’t even play the same position so I don’t see what the big deal is. I’d love to see Ed Reed dive over a pile and stop a QB sneak or stick his helmet into a 220 lb RBs chest. At the same time though, Troy can’t ball hawk like 20 can.
Having Adrian Wilson ranked higher is just absurd though.

But I would have to say Troy is a better player and I would have ranked him above Harrison, but that’s just me. Clearly, they are not looking at just last years stats because Brady was #2. And I agree Troy and Reed should be around the same area in the list.
However, I disagree with Ward or Taylor. Ward, maybe a few years ago, but he is not what he used to be.

"Roethlisberger not just top 50, but top 10 Really" Debate
There is an 8 page debate in that list about Ben not belonging.
I guess for most non- Steelers fan:
“He is a solid QB not an ELITE QB”
“He is the ultimate system QB”
“Nobody’s arguing that Ben isn’t good, because he is. Most (non-Steelers fans) just don’t feel that he is one of the top TEN players in the NFL”
“Rings are great, but it doesn’t mean a player is automatically great. (Trent Dilfer.)”
“He has benefitted, for the most part, from an excellent defense throughout his career. His stats bear this out.”
“In 16 games, he thru 15 INT’s and fumbled 14 times (losing 11 of them) — So Ben accounted for 26 turnovers, while throwing for 17 TD’s , How is this elite?”
Just to list a few.

Their Argument
They belive before we had really bad QB’s, what changed is now we have a good one, not great but good, but definitely not elite.
In other words our defense and system is so great that with a bad QB we can go to the playoffs, and with a good not great QB we can win SB.
Whats suks for Ben is then there is no way for him to prove his elite. If we loose is because he was bad if we win is because he was ok. This same argument is still used against Bradshaw.
I think they take the rings. So it’s ok.

I guess you were in a coma last year?
He WAS our entire offense last year (no discredit to Holmes or Ward there). For many games our rush offense did not exist. A huge portion of the game was on his shoulders. And he lead the team to (the exact number I cannot remember) like 6 4th quarter comebacks and 8 total come from behind wins.
He is elite and he IS the biggest reason why we won the superbowl.
by Johnny_S on Jun 30, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was a great player. But I’d still put Polamalu or Harrison ahead of him in a “best players in the NFL” list.
Ben did an amazing job winning the game, but I’d still say Warner is a better quarterback overall. If Warner had this defense can you imagine how the team would dominate.
Of course, if he’s still stuck with Ben’s O-line, maybe he wouldn’t, so who knows.

Warner
had Fitzgerald to throw to. If you throw it within 10 yards of that guy its a catch and then lots of YAC. Oh yeah…and he has Anquan Boldin.
Ben is a better QB than Warner last year and right now. Statistics mean fuck all if you do not win the game. Ben made more winning drives than any QB last year. You can have Warner and his stats, I will take the QB who can win close games.

The Steelers Super Bowl recipe is ...
Dick Lebeau and Mike Tomlin. The Steelers had good teams under Cowher, but I never thought Cowher was a good X’s and O’s coach. He’s just a great motivator and would clearly get outcoached in the playoffs. During the year he won the Super Bowl, Dick Lebeau and Ken Whisenthunt were lights out as assistant coaches, making all the right play calls on offense and defense when it mattered. I’m sure Cowher regrets not putting more emphasis on special teams, particularly allowing some starters to play there. I think he might have won at least one more championship if he did.
In stark contrast, Tomlin’s emphasis on a total football team, including special teams, and the way he absolutely loves having players compete for starting spots and playing time is exactly what this franchise needs right now. I hope this OL improves enough to see the team get back to some effective smash-mouth football. If it can, this offense will be able to put up a lot of points on the board off of play-action. I like Tomlin’s penchant to bring more speed and explosiveness to this team in all phases.

Johnny_S, you need a big receiver like Limas Sweed ...
to hopefully not continue to drop the ball like he did last year. I’m always a little leery of big WR’s that play small. Hines has always said that if he had Plaxico’s size, he would just kill guys out there.
Sweed has a long way to go and I actually think Mike Wallace is a better WR and overall football player as a rookie right now than Sweed is as a second-year player. We’ll see.
by datruth4life on Jun 30, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Sweed has the advantage...
Because he has played in an NFL game.
Sweed knows how to catch, he showed that in college. I do not think his trend of the droppies will continue in the future. I’m not a “Sweed guy” or a “Wallace guy”, I think we will be able to use both receivers next year.
by Johnny_S on Jun 30, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We will need both
There is no way at this point that I would rank Wallace over Sweed. That’s not the way the depth chart will look at this point either. Wallace by his own admission has not even played in cold weather yet, let alone taken a hit.
But the bottom line is that we need both of them to develop into at least capable NFL receivers. I’m not optimistic the Steelers will be able to re-sign Holmes. The Packers just re-signed three-year veteran Greg Jennings, drafted the same year as Santonio and with slightly better career numbers to date after a breakout 2008 campaign, to a three-year extension worth a reported $27-30 million. Holmes, who already considers himself Pro Bowl quality, won’t want much (if any) less and a productive fourth year might make him even more expensive than Jennings.Next summer Woodley will be a higher re-signing priority. He’s already playing at a higher level than Holmes and contributes more on a week to week basis to the league’s No. 1 defense than Holmes does to the league’s No. 23 offense. Woodley wlll also be cheaper than Holmes strictly because LBs cost less than WRs, and there is less depth behind him than at WR. The following year it will be time to work a new deal with Timmons and he is also going to be a challenge to re-sign. With Hines under contract through 2013 and two highly-drafted WRs on the roster, it’s setting up as a typical Steeler scenario where they prepare for the likelihood of a guy pricing himself beyond their salary structure and team needs. We have to look past Wallace vs. Sweed and hope they both turn out to be players.

Does anyone remember the Pats superbowl MVP WR’s name? Well, only a few remembers his name. That dude overpriced himself to Seattle if memory serves. And after that he was lost. Never heard of him again.
Frankly speaking, I don’t like Santonio Holmes’ last 2 interviews. The one where he’s talking about being in the HOF and the other where he shows off his egoistic nature and selfishness.
The guys just played 3 seasons and he talks about himself as one of the GREATEST. That’s wrong.
by Bonek on Jun 30, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, before the superbowl I think we had a s hot at retaining Holmes. Now…as steeler.lifer believes, I doubt it. Holmes will want to get paid like one of the greats, and even IF the steelers were interested in retaining him, I just don’t believe the steelers will pay what Holmes will want for a WR.
As above, that’s why there are two WRs coming up in the ranks, and right now we have an over-abundance of them competing for a spot in training camp. You better believe the steelers will keep any losers that can’t fit on the roster in their rolodex.
It’s okay though. Holmes doesn’t owe the steelers anything, and the steelers won’t owe Holmes anything. Holmes helped win us a superbowl and is going to go on to make tens of millions of dollars, good deal for us on both sides.
I have heard a lot of steelers talk about how great our locker room is, how great it is to play for the steelers. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard anything like that from Holmes. No one is expecting a home-team discount.

My biggest problem
6 WRs, 3 CBs. The rules of the present day NFL inflate WR numbers compared to historical numbers so WRs take top billing over CBs. In fact, top flight CBs are more valuable as there are fewer and fewer that can shut down WRs within the new rules.
On that point, and to the general discussion of too much emphasis on statistics, I would put Ike Taylor in the top 30 in the NFL. Only Asomogha is better at covering a receiver and Ike is a better tackler. I don’t care how many INTs Ike drops. For 16 games, Ike covered the other team’s #1 and only allowed one big play: the long pass to Wayne against the Colts. Even then, Ike tipped that ball and only luck gave Wayne a TD. That’s a damn fine season.

Tom Brady misses a whole year of action and he’s still the 2nd best player in the NFL?
Demarcus Ware gets 20 sacks and he’s the 3rd best, while the Defensive Player of the Year who was held every single play is #15?
And I wont debate Ed Reed vs Troy, but the gap between those two shouldn’t be that big.
And how is Woodley not on the list but Demeco Ryans is?
Andre Johnson is ranked higher than Larry Fitz?
Brian Westbrooke isn’t on this list?!?!

Again this list limits itself and throws itself to the wolves by calling it the “Best 50 to GO INTO 09”
Going into 09 you have a QB with a Knee that required multiple surgeries, had torn ligaments and infections, and who knows how he’s gonna play. Probably well. But 2nd best in the league, idk.

Another myth
that has continued to perpetuate since Ben’s rookie season is that he is “rarely asked to throw the ball more than 20 times per game.” This couldn’t be further from the truth. With the exception of 2 games last year (one in which he needed only 14 passes to put up 38 points against the Texans) or games in which he only played a half (Skins & Browns), Ben was “asked” to throw less than 25 passes ONLY ONCE and, in fact, threw for 30 or more in 6 games and 40 or more 4 times.

I had to look that up
since it seems to be the ammo used by many in anti-Ben camps. I am not generally a stats/fantasy guy and will repeat what I have said before, Ws are the only stat that matters. Not directed at you per se, but how many wins does Bress have? Palmer? Hasselbeck? Cutler? And how may of those have come when the pressure is on to put up or shut up? I don’t have the exact number but I think if I looked, I’d find that an astonishing percentage of his wins have come when the heat is hottest.
I’ll take Ben over ANY QB in this league. Remember Manning getting sacked by Porter TWICE in the 2005 divisional playoff game? Guaranty you that doesn’t happen to Ben in the crunch, at least not TWICE. What other quarterback would have been capable or INSTINCTIVE enough to make that tackle in the same game. You all know the one of which I speak.
Now come on people, stop kidding yourselves, Ben may not be in a class all by himself but he IS in the only class that matters – WINNERS.

Wikipedia’s Ben Roth page has a whole list of his comeback wins. Very impressive. Its a good point that in the 4th quarter he can dominate even when he has an overall shitty game… See Jacksonville this last year or Baltimore 1/2.

He may have had his finest half ever in that jacksonville game. And his worst half ever too.
The only managing Ben does is that he manages to win games. - chewiesteeler

Ben's comebacks
I’ve seen on TV a stat showing that, since Ben has been in the league, no one has had more comeback wins.
I can’t find that stat anywhere on the internet and i’d like to shut my friends up.
Can anyone find a link with this stat?

Santonio is playing for his next deal this season
I’m more worried about him being tackled by The Chronic more so than a chronic weight gain, you know what I’m saying?

I heard
that he’s considering having the middle part of Joe Flacco’s unibrow grafted on top of his head as big plush toupee

Shut up, dude
I’m 25, and am balding badly enough to just have my head and get it over with.

I knew a kid in high school
that had a receding hairline in 10th grade. By graduation he was almost totally bald.

So that’s the Bowling and Country Music Hall of Fame that Steelers have more guys in then the Ravens in Canton. Any other places?

I remember
all those painful playoff loses under Cowher without a SB-caliber QB…those losses shoot the whole “run the ball, stop the run” theory to bits.
I would rephrase that adage, “run the ball, but if you can’t just punt it and let your great defense take over. Oh yeah, when the game is on line give the ball to #7”.
