BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack-Joey Porter's Mouth Edition

IX-  Another listing of rankings, another day. Actually, I think this will stir up some major debate. The Sporting News ranked Bruce Arians the 11th best offensive coordinator in the NFL. This means that 20 other offensive coordinators are worse than Bruce. Let us know what you think about that below. The Sporting News also ranked Dick LeBeau as the best defensive coordinator in the NFL, which should cause considerably less debate.

X- Everyone's favorite loudmouth, Joey Porter, is running his mouth in his Dolphins uniform, saying:

Joey-porter1_medium

"I don't understand how you can put somebody in front of us. We won the championship. We were AFC East champions. I just don't think it's supposed to happen like that. You've got to beat somebody to be the champs. We had to beat somebody to be the champs."

XIII-The Steelers men's fantasy camp really sounds like a good time, even though in reality it is probably only a few ticks above lightsaber camp for Star Wars fans on the dorkiness scale.

Star-divide

XIV- Keiwan Ratliff describes himself as a "playmaker" type of cornerback, where some corners are shut-down cover corners and others are very physical, Raliff says he just makes plays.  Hopefully for the Steelers the free-agent can help do that whether it's at cornerback, or even Safety where he has lining up in practice.

XL- Fran Tarkenton had some choice words for Brett Favre a while back that was picked up by the media, and now it appears as the media is eager to hear the outspoken former Viking quarterback help attract ratings to their shows.  This time Tarkenton decided to call out the 75 or 76 Steelers' for steroid abuse.  The only problem is Tarkenton is evidently senile because the story he recanted was about players that either weren't yet starters, or who were in college at the time he claimed they were lining up against him.  Tarkenton has been irrelevant for a long time and perhaps this is his way to get back to glory.

Tiger-federer_299x307_medium

XLIII-Two off topic recaps about two men who are arguably the greatest of all time in their respective sports.  Roger Federer completed became the sixth player ever to complete a career grand slam and also tied Pete Sampras' record of 14 grand slams in the same afternoon.  Meanwhile, Tiger Woods played a round of seven under to come back from a four stroke deficit to steal the Memorial Open.  I'm not a huge fan of watching either Tennis or Golf of telelvision, but right now we are watching two legands cement their legacies.

Tiger Woods is great to watch...

But I guess if you aren’t a golfer its not really that exciting. I’m glad he got this win and shut up a lot of critics. He has a little bit further (4 or 5 majors I think) to go to be the “best ever”, but clearly he has a big chance of doing it.

Oh and Joey Porter is an idiot.

Oh, and I agree with Johnny_S in the above post: Joey Porter’s an idiot… IMHO.

Men's Fantasy Camp Endorsement

I attended this year (for the 4th time). All it consists of is about 2 days of hanging out with Dermontti Dawson, Louis Lipps, Edmund Nelson, a couple of current players (this year it was Dan Sepulveda and Greg Warren) and about 300 other deeply devoted Steelers fans. You do some football drills on Saturday and Sunday but mostly, its drinking and story telling on Friday night and Saturday night. All the alumni players are down to earth and accessible. Oh, and the Saturday night guest speaker this year was Hines Ward. Previous guest speakers have included, Art Rooney, Coach T, Rocky Bleir, The Bus, Mel Blount, and Coach Mitchell.

So if a weekend of drinking, playing football and talking Steelers football with actual Steelers (current and alumni) is only a couple of ticks up the dorkinness scale, I would say that it must be a pretty robust challenge to find something that would appeal to you.

It was actually a joke, no offense meant. I wish you had responded earlier as I originally posted the announcement about this years fantasy camp asking for anyone who has been to contribute and tell us how it is

I would love to hear any good stories or write ups about the camp as I’m sure plenty others would too.

OK a couple of quick stories from the '07 camp

My wife gave me a trip to the ’07 camp as a birthday present. It was a blast.

Wolfley is a complete clown, and I mean that as a compliment. He just loves to joke around, and he is a genuine super nice guy. He and Tunch stayed the one night and just told stories for hours.

There was a guy left his wife in Ohio, who just had a baby the day before, to attend the camp. That was announced and brought cheers all around, and then prompted a funny story from Duane Woodruff, who did something similar to his wife once, and said he was still paying for it.

Another guy from Florida tore his Achilles on the first drill of the camp. He got his ankle wrapped and a pair of crutches and stayed for the rest of the camp. On Sunday he competed in the passing competition and I think actually won a prize.

One family had three generations represented. A grandpa, his son, and grandson all attended together.

One guy flew in from Arizona to attend. When it was over, I asked if he had to fly back Sunday night to get to work. He said, “I’m unemployed. I just spent the last of my savings to come here.” Steeler Nation indeed.

Levon Kirkland was a beast. It looked like he could still play. And Dermotti Dawson may have been one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. He was actually taking pictures of US to show his family.

The Sporting News ranked Bruce Arians the 11th best offensive coordinator in the NFL.

What I find amazing about Arians is as the 11st best OC in the league, he able to churn out a product somewhere in the 20s. Pretty impressive, I think. Maybe when he gets a franchise QB he’ll start to perform better.

Don't worry about the haters. Haters only hate.

true and once we add LeCharles Bentley & T.J. Duckett he will really have the tools to play Steelers football.

In fairness to a guy I don't care for...

Two seasons ago, his offense put up franchise record numbers. His play calling since has been terrible at times, most times in my opinion, but he has produced. The best offense the franchise had ever seen (passing production wise) and a Superbowl Championship in just two seasons as an OC. That said, we need to find someone better.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jun 8, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually think Arians doesn’t get the credit he deserves. I mean he won the Super Bowl this year, and he was coaching the highest rated passer (t) in Super Bowl history when we won in 2005. Besides, did you know that in 2007, he coordinated an offense that yielded the second best rated QB and the league’s leading rusher through 15 weeks?

Okay, I originally planned this to be funny, but I threw up a little in my mouth as I was typing it. it’s not funny at all.

Yes

But having one of the best defenses in the league and a QB who is a proven winner is a little better then what Miami has/had going for them.

Tomlin is indeed an amazing coach though. But the talent in 2007 on that Miami squad was atrocious. Then again, I guess it was good enough to beat my Ravens for their only win…….FML

I dont think its funny

CC did wonders in San Diego, he got really unlucky in Miami (Ronnie Brown was kicking arse till he blew out his knee) and he actually gave the Ravens an offense that looked scary for a short while

The man can coach. I have no problems with him being number 1.

by Michael Hewitt on Jun 8, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Silly article

The coordinator articles have people like Russ Grimm listed in the top 20. The man hasn’t been an OC for a single snap and he’s number 13 or something.

I like me some Russ Grimm as an OL coach. But I don’t assume he’ll be a great OC, and let’s be fair Whiz will be calling his plays from here on out.

by Chicago Steeler on Jun 8, 2009 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

i agree. don’t you think he would’ve been promoted to OC instead of bringing in someone else right off the bat when they went to arizona if whiesenhunt had confidence in Grimm? and grimm isn’t even the official OC now. he’s basically co-OC.

from rotoworld:

The Cardinals will split offensive coordinator duties between OL coach Russ Grimm and wide receivers coach Mike Miller. Grimm is now the “running game coordinator” and Miller will coordinate the passing game. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt will call the offensive plays.

by t1mmy10 on Jun 8, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

ouch, thats a disaster waiting to happen

each will be focusing only on one avenue of play- this sounds like its going to end up becoming a battle between the two.

by SteelersVT on Jun 10, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

lol seriously. how many HC or OC jobs has Grimm interviewed for? and he hasn’t gotten a single one. i bet he might be great at team management skills & strategy but i bet he has issues with play calling. why else would he have been passed over AGAIN

by t1mmy10 on Jun 10, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

IF...

If you check BA’s resume it is pretty good. That said…I hope he puts it to work. I know I’m not alone in saying my patience is wearing thin. When I look back at the ‘78 and ’79 Steelers the running game was not all that , but Bradshaw beat ’em with Swan and Stallworth and had some his best seasons as a passer. Arians has surrounded himself with an arsenal of weapons except arguably a productive O line. Hopefully, we will see a more cohesive and dependable O Line with the coming season and a balanced attack. I believe the O has a better season in the works. C’mon 7!

by steelersrock08 on Jun 8, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

i guess Tarkenton goes with the middle school mind set of "if you can't beat them, make up rumors about them"

from the article:

And remember, the Steelers’ first Super Bowl win was noted more for a terrific defensive effort that held the Vikings to no offensive touchdowns and just 17 rushing yards while intercepting Tarkenton three times and scoring the game’s first two points on a safety.

by t1mmy10 on Jun 8, 2009 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

Arians at 11 is laughable, we all know it.

At best he could be early 20s but I think thats it.

Now, there is the possibility that the more he works with a group the more effective his strategy will become but time will tell on that one. Granted, his first year at OC he had some impressive passing and (to some extent) rushing stats but that may have been by chance. Lets see if this upcoming offense performs better than last seasons.

The main problem I see with his play calls is that he loves pulling a guard WAY too much. He does it all the time on the goaline, where you should typically just line up and smack the man in front of you. Pulling a guard is typically used to gain big yardage, while risking the chance of letting someone in the backfield. Why he does this on the goaline i will never understand.

Another problem I see with his plays are the ones that you he spent all night creating in his laboratory, laughing like a mad scientist. Unfortunately these plays never work because he has too much faith in his o-line. Look at the wildcat play in the super bowl where Davis and Colon pretty much ran into each other and missed the one defender. Or look at the goaline play where Davis and Russell were lined up side by side in the backfield. Spaeth whiffed on a block and the defender ran right into Russell whos lead blocker (Davis) was useless from where he was.
On all his ‘clever’ plays, as I like to call them (because you know he just says to himself “o this is so clever” when he comes up with them), he expects his lineman or TE to always take their man with a one-on-one blocking scheme, which they rarely do.

Ok, i got a little side tracked there but my point is that Arians isn’t the 11th offensive coordinator in the NFL. He could be if he loses some faith in his o-line OR his o-line begins to preform better (which is a possibility considering they have a year under their belt of working together, not to mention Stapleton and Kemo will have some experience now).

So basically, Arians SHOULD get better as time goes on………………but I could be wrong.

I’m not sure if any of this makes sense, I kind of just rambled.

Think Arians is ranked about right. I would take many but not all those ranked above him. I would take some of those ranked below him. Agree with # 1 and I was clamoring for Cam when he was available. Not surprised to see all the ex Steelers on the list. The Steelers organization is highly touted. Just commenting on the ex Steelers;

1) Still mad at Chan for letting Stew throw the ball late in the half against Denver in 97. Felt if 10 had stuck the rock in the Buses gut the Steelers may have gotten 1 for the thumb in 97. That said, I’d take Chan over Arians.
2) Gilbride is about my least favorite OC. I can totally understand why Buddy Ryan went postal and wanted to take his head off during a game on the sideline. Maybe he grew and matured with NYG? I don’t want him back.
3) I think the Bengal O can be pretty good and it’s the D that let’s them down more. I liked Brat when he was part of Cowher’s staff. I would take him over Arians.
4) Always liked Mularkey. He brought a lot of the early razzle dazzle to the O. He was a precursor to Whiz who kept some of the Mularkey playbook. Would take MM in a NY second over Arians.
5) I understand Grimm’s lack of OC credentials. That said I would take Russ. I bet he’d follow what a wise man once said “when you run the ball good things happen.”

Regarding the other stories;
I think Peazy is being Peazy. Loved that guy early in his career. Felt he was over rated in the middle portion. He was an absolute monster in the 05 run and we would not have won XL without him. For that I got his back.
Love the idea of fantasy camp. Always makes me think of the Seinfeld episode when Kramer goes to a Yankees fantasy camp and punches out Mickey Mantle. “Kramer goes to a fantasy camp? His life is like a fantasy camp”
Also love the idea of Ratliff lining up at safety. I don’t know if Ratliff can beat out #3 Lewis or last years top ST tackler Madison. Don’t know if they would keep more than 5 CBs. Might have a shot of beating out Mundy or Carter to make the team as Mundy is eligible to PS again.

Any one else in Steelers nation read his quote about coming to the Steelers defense being equivalent to being a WR and getting to play with Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

I know it’s a mountainous mole hill, but can’t you give some love to your new team, really. We love shills here, you tell us how great Steelers are and we love you, give Ben some love baby.

Let him talk

I never liked the way Joey always runs his mouth but the thing that sets him apart from other mouths: he always works his butt off to back up his words. Pick your own example. There are plenty to choose from. My favorite: It’s stupid to call Manning and the Colts soft? I’ll just sack the man twice in one series. There is a reason he was able to get the big money in Miami. Porter is not a classy player but he is a damn good player. His value is in the same category as Bruschi or Ray Ray. He is an emotional leader who notches up the play of everyone around him. That said, though, I’ll stick with Deebo.

i dont see the issue in NE being ranked above miami in preseason projections

joey’s (although i love him) argument only makes sense during the regular season. he has a point but thats only a FACTOR in determining preseason projections, because if it was the only thing then the preseason projections would only be the end of season rankings last year. new england will have some major improvements over last years team, which they tied the dolphins in record, and split their games against the dolphins. they aren’t saying the pats are the champs next year, they’re only saying that they THINK they’ll be the champs.
