Steelers Great Eight Heartbreak Tournament Begins: Quarterfinals Game One
Here we go Steeler Nation, time for the Steelers Great Eight Heartbreak Tournament. Here is Game One of the Quarterfinals. By definition, we are not asking solely for your personal experience per se. Such would be categorically unfair to earlier games and skewed to the advantage of more recent games. Of course, use your personal experience when possible, and then project yourself into those games you did not experience. We are asking you to place yourself in Steeler Nation as a whole during the time when each game was played. Thus, the precise question will be, "Which of these two playoff losses was more painful to Steeler Nation."
Regarding Tournament seeding, I started with my basic outline, but did make a few tweaks according to the feedback from the comments after each write-up. The seeds are below. You can click on them to review the write-ups and follow-up discussions in order to help you with voting information:
Seed #1: 1972 - Dolphins 21, Steelers 17
Seed #2: 1995 - Cowboys 27, Steelers 17
Seed #3: 1994 - Chargers 17, Steelers 13
Seed #4: 2001 - Patriots 24, Steelers 17
Seed #5: 1976 - Raiders 24, Steelers 7

I went with the Tennessee game, I remember that one and it hurt. I was 7 years away from being born in 1972, and while I understand how awful it is to lose to a lesser team when you are hurt, and how irritating it must be to them hear about Miami celebrating, It was just the beginning.
The Steelers were finally good, you can’t be too broken up when your team makes it that far for the first time. Same reason I wouldn’t vote for Ben’s rookie year loss to the Pats, I didn’t expect much, I think we were better than the Pats, but we weren’t ready to ascend to that level yet.

it’s tougher to lose any afc championship game, especially one that was close, than a divisional round game…
and being on the list of teams that allowed the dolphins to be the only undefeated super bowl champs

Not personal losses!!
Remember that the guidelines for this tournament is NOT personal losses! The titans game was more personal to me because we lost on a back call at the end of the game when joe “Oscar” nedney fell to the turf on a questionable hit by washington. damn I hated dewayne washington! Anyways, while that was a personal loss, the ‘72 loss was more significant to the steeler nation because (and this is my opinion) that season gave birth to the steeler nation. That was the first year we won a home playoff game, the first year we went to the AFC championship game and more than likely the only team that should have beaten the ’72 dolphins. Every time I hear the ’72 dolphins and their undefeated season I think of the steelers losing that game. The ’02 loss to titans don’t really come to mind when you think of 2002 if anything, the home cleveland game the previous week was one of the best games I ever saw (I was there at heinz and in the snow but it looked awesome on TV). So I picked the ’72 loss because of the significance

Word. I was a 12 day old baby starting my life in Ligonier when that Dolphin game took place. I never realized we played them in the AFC Championship that year. The ending to the Titan game was like, are you kidding me? How could Washington cost us the game like that? He was also the one that missed the tackle on McCareins on the deflating catch and run play of that drive. But realistically, our defense couldn’t get stops at that point and we weren’t going to advance very far. That Dolphin game sounds like a real heartbreaker. And Clemente dying the same day? Wow. That is a dark day. My dad used to talk about what a great man and great right fielder Clemente was when I was growing up. And he’s a Cubs fan! A sad day indeed.
