The Edge

I was watching the NFL network this evening, and they brought up Edgerrin James.  That got me thinking about why he is still out of a job.   In the infinite wisdom of my BTSC peers, I wondered what everyones thery is as to where or if he will play.

We know the guy has the talent to be a starting RB in the league, but after last season I  believe there are some questions about his work ethic and whether or not he still has it.  I know there are numerous teams that could use him and in his own words,"there arent 32 RB's that are better than me in the league".

In my opinion a team like Tampa Bay or Seattle, where there is no premier back that they can count on would be foolish not to try and sign him.  Other teams, like Chicago or Green Bay could slide him into a 2 back system and have a serious rushing threat regardless of who is in there.  I know a lot depends on cash as well and I am sure he is not willing to take back up money.

I am interested to hear your opinions.- GO STEELERS

Houston. Anyone can look good behind that blocking scheme, and he would be a good change of pace/mentor to Steve Slaton. Certainly better than Ahman Green, who’s always hurt.

wherever their starting rb gets injured and their backup isn't cutting it

if i had to pick possible teams that seem kinda shallow at rb: browns, jaguars, texans, 49ers, and rams

Im thinking San Fran or St Louis

They have good starters, although little to no depth behing them

When I first saw this post

I thought you were going to suggest we grab him. I am glad you did not.

If he doesn’t end up with a job right away, I am sure he will have one at some point during the season as a result of injuries.

My guess is San Fran.

Up until the Super Bowl

I would have said just pick him up and shelve him so he can’t burn the Steelers at all. (joking) He had a lot of success against the Steelers in the past. I haven’t looked recently and haven’t followed their draft but what does him going back to Indy look like? He’s getting some age on him but still runs hard.

Indy doesn't really need anyone

They have Addai and used their first round pick on Brown.

Plus, if I remember correctly his ‘end’ at Indy did not exactly end well, not that it ended horribly, but I do not think either side was happy about how it ended.

Thanks

I do sort of remember both sides burning that bridge. And now that you mention it I kinda remember them getting Brown. This year has been a blur! It’s over half way over.

i think

that indy gave him a superbowl ring even though he was already in arizona, for the help he had given them in getting to that point- i didnt really understand that but thats what i had heard

If that is so

That could actually be a slap in the face. Like “thanks for getting us close (but not quite there). The money we saved by dumping you helped us get key pieces. Here is a token of our appreciation. Maybe someday you can actually be a part of one. ….Love Indy.”

I doubt that...

Those rings cost a huge chunk of change and I doubt they are slinging them off to past players who used to play for them. Not only that, who the heck wants a ring for something you didn’t win?

I do

I’ll take a Super Bowl 43 ring please.

Thats different though

We aren’t pro athletes. Of course we would take the ring, since we never have/had a chance to win one.

Imagine your kid asking you one day “So daddy, tell me all about the season when you won that ring.”

I’d never take credit for something I didn’t earn.

Why is Mike Tomlin yelling at that poor O’s pitcher? That staff takes enough abuse already. Haha… In good fun as always.

I know

But if someone put a SB43 ring on my finger. They ain’t getting it back. Maybe cause it would be awesome to have it, but also because I would sell it for an ass-load of cash (and I mean ass-load in the purest of technical terms).

I try to bring humor in when I can, I’ve just had a stressful day today

And..

Mike Hart. I still think he can play and excel as a third down back in this league.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 28, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is

You know what you’ll get out of Edge, and you know how long you’ll get it. Most teams draft some young guy hoping that they’ll be able to develop him and get the same production you’d get out of Edge. I don’t think this is 100% the wisest choice as I think many teams would be better off with him based on how good he’s played vs the Steelers.

by Chicago Steeler on Jul 28, 2009 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Hmm....

New Orleans- This team could use a solid 1-A RB. Reggie is what he is. Pierre Thomas (who kept Rashard off the field at Illinois) is talented but still a bit unproven. Mike Bell is the third option, and he is servicable. Edge fits in as a third down, change of pace back. He has good hands (so he fits the pass happy system) is a good pass blocker (something none of the other three can boast) and can carry the ball inside to outside.

Buffalo- With a suspension for Marshawn Lynch to start the season, the work load will be put in the fairly capable hands of Fred Jackson. Dominic Rhodes is nothing more than an adequate back up. Edge could step in and be the number 2 for a while. Plus this team is in win now mode since bringing in TO.

Saint Louis- This team should be heavily committed to the run this year. Between the coaching change and the fact they are thin at WR. Seriously, name a WR on their roster… I dare you. Unless you think Horace Gant has 1000 yards in him, you better run. Steven Jackson is a workhorse, but after the season he had in ‘06, he’s declined each year. Give him a little help.

Jacksonville- Need a proven back up. The problem with the Jags is they like to use their FB as a runner, which is less common in today’s NFL. That gives them a second RB already on the roster in Greg Jones (when he’s healthy). Also I think Chauncey Washington might get some playing time early on (or at least a chance to prove he can be that second guy).

Other than those, any team with an injury that dents the roster significantly enough to warrant the move. I really don’t think Edge has a whole lot left in the tank personally.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 28, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

Deuce McAllister

May still have some in the tank. If you can keep him out of the training and operating room.
