Heath Miller signs 6-year contract
From the Steelers official site:
"Miller, who would have entered the final season of the contract he signed as a No. 1 choice in the 2005 NFL Draft, has a new six-year deal from the Steelers that binds him to the team through the 2014 season."
Terms have not been announced. This is a great move. We lock up a fantastic all-around TE and outstanding person. It is a credit to the Steelers organization that they are able to get deals like this done with fantastic players. And as the article says, it shows how much Miller means as a player and a teammate that they didn't bet on the CBA, but rather signed now.
I've long said Omar Khan is the most under-appreciated member of the Steelers organization - this is why. Fantastic news. What do you think -- and who should be next?

terrific
Excelent news.. he is definetly a Steeler-for-life type of player. Art Rooney and the Front Office is sure trying to add a 7th Lombardi… this is one more example of it.

Nobody. Wait until the season is over to see who else to extend.

Agreed!
No one else on the team is really worth re-signing right now. Wait out the season and see how they do. Maybe it will give some of them (Cough-Casey Hampton-Cough) a bit of an incentive to play at their highest level all year long.

Ahh Good point...
I honestly forgot about him! As long as he stays away from Sheetz he should be offered a new contract. I can’t imagine a new kicker going into Pittsburgh and being as clutch in that stadium as he is without it taking quite some time.

According to post-gazette.com:
$35.3 million over the next six seasons … including a $12.5 million signing bonus.
What a great deal. The best tight end our offense could hope for, secured for under $6M per year. Here we go!

Look, I’m very happy Miller got signed. I think going by stats makes Miller look underrated. I think “who knows” in the uncapped year. I think Miller is big money. I still don’t see how this deal is a “steal” by any means. The guaranteed money is low, but Miller is at the point in his career where he probably will play the length of his contract, which means 35.3 / 6.
Not that we want to play like it like this, but consider that Heath will likely be eligible for RFA status next year. Barring this, consider that the franchise tag for tight ends is currently valued at 4.462 million, and Heath is getting paid 5.88. This is not a steal.
Some, outside the organization, might even say the steelers got fleeced. That’s because they don’t know the value of 83. This is a deal fair to both sides, but lets not pretend its something its not. There is no hometown discount going on. Miller is very valuable to us, but he would never have pulled in the kind of contract the other top TEs get because of his numbers.
Look forward to seeing Heath make clutch catches for the next 6 years!

I think he is trying to say that after this year or next Heath’s base salary will be under the average franchise tender for Tight Ends. (The average of the top contracts in the position).
So essentially in about two years his base contract will look a lot more reasonable compared to other TE around the league.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if that was it and didn’t want to put effort into a response if I was misinterpreting. I think that it is possible that this is the case, but I don’t think the average of the top five salaries (excluding heath’s, since he’s now in this league) will be above 5.8 million in two years. It might take a bump, it might not.
Not sure how the contract is weighted, but one thing that is lost is that we are essentially overwriting a year of heath’s old contract which wasn’t that expensive by giving him an extension. I don’t think they can substantially backload deals anymore so Heath will need to start out making something like 4 mil a year I believe for the salary to work out correctly, whereas he was scheduled to make less than a million.
With RFA and two franchises we could have had Heath playing in the black and gold for 4 more years at far less than they are currently paying him. This isn’t how the steelers operate, should operate, or how I want them to operate. The steelers, however, had most of the bargaining chips on their side of the board. Even with this, the steelers still chose to pay Heath in the top 5 for his position.
In three years the franchise maybe over 5.8 million a year, but I sincerely doubt that salaries are going to increase to the point that this deal looks like we really pulled one over on Heath. If anything I would say that Heath got the better end of this deal.

Here are a few comparisons...
Chris Cooley (2008)- 6 yrs, 30 mil, 14 mil guaranteed
Kellen Winslow (2009)- 6 yrs, 36.1 mil, 20.1 mil guaranteed
Dallas Clark (2008)- 6 yrs, 36 mil
Jason Witten (2006)- 6 yrs, 29 mil
Sounds good to me!

R. Clark to sign next; J. Reed also a possibility
All,
I think R. Clark’s contract will get done since they have been having ongoing negotiations for so long. J. Reed is another possibility since he wouldn’t get a huge deal as a kicker.
I’m for letting Casey Hampton play out the last year of his deal. I want to see a motivated and hungry Big Snack this year. Even if he has another All-Pro caliber season, the team could franchise him next year for 2010 at about the same amount that he counts against the cap this year. I’m also for letting Keisel play out his last year as well. Keisel has been a somewhat of a disappointment since he got his last deal, so I’d like to see how he does playing for a new contract as well as having his potential replacement in 1st rounder Ziggy Hood already being on the squad.
After Clark (and/or Reed), I would expect the Steelers to close the checkbook on the players this year because next year will be big paydays for L. Woodley and S. Holmes, who will both be in the last year of their deals. I hope they don’t close the checkbook for the head coach and assistant coaches yet. I’d lock Tomlin up right now.
This offseason has surpassed my expectations for this team and it really shows that this team is focused on winning more championships. It’s about time to do this!
by datruth4life on Jul 29, 2009 11:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Motivated and hungry Big Snack?
Remember, his job isn’t to rush the passer, or even get a lot of tackles. He’s supposed to keep anyone from running up the middle, and he does that by not getting pushed around by the center and guards.
The problem I have is that there aren’t a lot of 3-4 nosetackles that can play that role as well as Hampton. Most of the good ones are in our division, and it’s not like we can take a fat man and plug him in the middle.
I agree about Keisel, though, I’m guessing they want Hood to be his backup now and take his spot next year.

I love it
Heath Miller gonna be a Steeler for a looonnng time. Steeler FO does it again. Now onto the next players.
1. Casey Hampton
2. Ryan Clark
3. Jeff Reed
4. Justin Hartwig
5. Willie Parker
I’d be thrilled if any of those 5 resigned before the season, but the only one I see really doing that is Clark as I’ve heard rumors that the Steelers have already been negotiating with him. I could see a Reed extension before September 10th, but the other 3 will most likely be wait and see players.
Once again, fantastic job Mr. Colbert.

clutch player
seriously though, I didn’t think we would be able to keep Miller, so I am happy. Obviously, he has been a VERY productive TE for the Steelers, but he has also been a good team player, considering how few passes he gets compared to other TEs with his hands. Also, remember how clutch he was during his rookie season, in the playoffs, in the runup to SB40? I’ll never forget those devastating catches against the Colts!

this is great
it came at the cost of pretty penny, but we knew it would & he’s worth it.
judging by everyone’s comments above i think most ppl agree with what i think we should do with everyone else looking for an extension: the only person i’d contemplate investing money in resigning now would be clark or reed.. clark’s been great but he’s never been able to start 16 games due to injuries. with him turning 30 this season the injuries are probably only going to get more common. i’d resign him only if its for a very reasonable price tag. reed can be franchise tagged next year for a little more than a million than he’s being paid now so we can wait and see with him (as Datruth said above, the same is true for hampton). and everyone else is contingent how they do this year (parker, keisel & hampton). they all have at least 2 of the following true: are getting up their in age, have had injury/conditioning issues, or we have someone waiting in the wings to replace him.

A motivated Big Snack is an All-Pro Big Snack
The Clark deal will probably get done soon because both sides want a deal to get done. Clark is a great fit in D. Lebeau’s D and the Steelers probably value Clark’s play more than other NFL teams would an injury-prone 29-year-old safety whose body might be starting to breakdown . Clark has never had a big payday and will turn 30 in October. A new deal would be good for him and the Steelers as he continues to start for a Super Bowl-caliber team and can tutor Ryan Mundy until it’s his time to take over.
Someone had mentioned Casey’s job is only to tie up the line of scrimmage to let the LBs roam, but I argue that he can do much more than that when he is in shape and his fuse is lit. I still remember the game against the Patriots last year where he was upset at a bogus holding call, vehemently argued with the ref, and then took it out on the Patriots the next play by throwing aside his man and then sacking Cassell. That’s the type of effort I’d want to see from him playing on a one-year-deal. That might give him extra incentive to remain in shape.
As far as Keisel, he hasn’t played to the potential that the Steelers thought he would — someone who could stop the run, pressure the QB and give them 6 to 8 sacks a season. Could his effort, focus, and production be better in a contract year and his heir apparent already on the roster? Maybe so. Why not see? The team would only benefit from it if he did. I would hold off on the extension for Keisel.
Reed’s deal will get done. As far as FWP & Hartwig, thanks for your contributions and wish you luck in free agency.
by datruth4life on Jul 30, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Disagree about Keisel
The “Keisel is going to be a rover who’ll rack up sacks” hype was a media creation more than anything else. All the coaches said was that they were moving him around more, and the media just up and forgot he was still a 3-4 DE. He has definitely lived up to his potential, in that sense — a solid, capable, weakside 3-4 DE.
Is he flashy or dominant? No. But he’s one of the youngest of the DE’s outside untested rookies and a more than capable starter. Plus he’s a solid teammate, wants to stay and wouldn’t be too expensive (he and Ben are really close), you could reduce his cap hit by extending him, etc.
Seems to me that Hood is Aaron Smith’s eventual replacement, not Keisel’s. So why let him go and leave yourself with Hood, inexperienced Rashon Harris, and a bunch of older and older DE’s? Seems crazy to me. You at least open talks and look at a 3 year deal. If it’s cheap enough you get it done, and if he gets beat out later on that’s fine — it’s good competition.
All these are good reasons to sign him after the season, too, except why wait for other 3-4 teams to drive up the price when you could reduce the cap hit now? I just don’t get why people are so eager to kick Keisel to the curb when he’s a dependable champion and there’s little youth behind him.
by syrsteelerfan on Jul 30, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well spoken. I like Keisel at the right price. I’m not sure if he’s going to be looking for that last big paycheck or if he wants to retire with the B&G. If he wants to retire, they’ll get a very reasonable deal done. If not, best of luck to him. I can understand wanting to close out his career with a last shot at money. Brett has performed at a higher level than any other 7th round pick in recent memory, and that is a huge understatement.

Batted balls
are Keisel’s biggest contribution. I think he led the steelers in that category the past couple of years and 12 batted balls are better than 6 sacks, although not nearly as exciting. And no, that whole deal about being a pass rushing end never came to fruition. The thing about Keisel is he isn’t great in the running game. He’s adequate in the run game, but the weak link among the front 7 (at least when Foote was still at ILB). If Keisel goes, I think he’s easily replaceable. On the other hand, we saw what happens when Ryan Clark is not on the field (remember Anthony Smith?).
by CarlWeathersMustache on Jul 30, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No joke on how important those batted balls can be. In that epic third quarter against the Chargers in the playoffs he created the first SD turnover – Larry Foote’s interception – by getting his hands up and deflecting Rivers’ pass. That was huge to keep SD from building on the momentum of Sproles’ 63 yard kickoff return.

Great move expected
Around the time of Draft in April most of us Steeler fans in BTSC were predicting that Miller would be extended before season start. Contract is fair at $6MM per and shows how much the team values his play. Said before and I’ll say again, there isn’t a better all-around TE in the league and I’m not sure who’d be close … Gonzo, I guess. Clark, Witten and Gates couldn’t block yo mamma on a run play.
Keisel is solid player and team should re-sign him (at right price) if they can …. $10MM / 3 yrs? Reflecting fact that he might not be starter for more than another year or 2.

Worth his weight since day one.
Being from northwest PA makes me an automatic Steelers fan for life. I happened to be living near the University of Virginia when Miller was there and I became a fan watching his college career really take off.
When he announced he was entering the NFL draft some football savvy friends of mine asked where I thought he might go and I replied matter-of-factly that not only would Miller be drafted by the Steelers…BUT ALSO, that the Steelers would throw him the ball! They thought I was crazy…“OK, Steelers…MAYBE…but throw him the ball? No Way!”
Well, four seasons later with 168 receptions, nearly 2000 yards, and 21 touchdowns I think it is safe to say that he means more to the Steelers line-up than just another meat shield.
I met him once too, a well-mannered, humble guy…I think at the end of the day he just enjoys playing football. I’m glad for that, and I’m glad he’s gonna be with us for awhile. GO STEELERS!
