Poll: Where Will Michael Vick Play This Year?

Let's see where Steeler Nation lands on the Michael Vick situation.  ESPN 1250 just reported that a cab driver claims he dropped Vick off at the Steelers headquarters on the south side.  While this sounds shaky, it is also unlikely that ESPN (especially the Stan and Guy Show), would throw that out there without any shred of credibility.  Anyhow, here goes:

There was numerous reports that he was in Washington DC earlier this week that were reported on our local CBS sports radio and ESPN affiliates that have pretty much been debunked now…

Vick should start in the UFL

He’ll at least be an instant starter (which he won’t be in the NFL) and he’ll get a chance to ease back into football against guys that he should dominate. He’ll also be able to showcase himself to NFL teams and any team can sign him away from the UFL if he’s blowing them away.

If he wants to backup and earn the vet minimum then go ahead and come back to the NFL but a month or so in the UFL might lead to a better shot, especially if someone’s QB goes down or just plain stinks. I’m sure Minnesota would be sending some scouts to Vick’s UFL games.

He also owes a lot of people money and can make more in the NFL as a back-up than he can in the UFL as the top guy in the league.

maybe, maybe not

At best he’ll get the NFL minimum right now and most likely get a one year deal. If he waits, tears up the UFL then maybe a team like the Vikes or Redskins or even Raiders would give him more money and a two or three year deal. Nothing is guaranteed of course but he can only help his value in the UFL, unless he just proves that he can’t play anymore.

Chris Mortenson says the UFL might be willling to pay seven figures to Vick

per PFT….

Chris Mortensen did a call-in during which he talked about Mike Vick. And Mort reported, almost in passing, that the UFL is willing to pay Vick $1.5 million to $2 million for one six-game season.

That also says...

It’s a six game season. Something overlooked when talking about the chances of him playing there (The UFL). He wouldn’t have to leave early to join an NFL roster, the season ends in Mid-October, I believe (maybe November, I can’t remember.).

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 31, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

one question

what would happen if vick would sign, oh say, a 2 year contract with the UFL & any nfl team wants him and offers him a contract? we dont see how it’d work too often because there aren’t a lot of football leagues out there except for the nfl. would he just be able to leave the team? or would there only be an issue if he received a signing bonus? just curious

by t1mmy10 on Jul 31, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

CFL, EFL, AFL (Canadian, European, and Arena)

Vick would MURDER teams in any of those other leagues. I didn’t mention UFL, since it was brought up in previous replies.

Thank you drive through...

these are a few teams that i think are lacking in depth/long term stability/long term investment at QB and maybe willing to take a chance to get a quality qb: titans, redskins, rams, 49ers.
i have no clue what their organization’s/coaches’ takes are on players that have had problems.

by t1mmy10 on Jul 31, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

If Vick is on our 53-man roster

I might have a hard time watching the team this year. I know he served his time and he is “reformed”, but I still hate the guy.

I just do not understand how we could use him unless they are planning on bringing him in as a return specialist (uhhh wait we drafted Wallace) or a receiver (uhh wait thats probably our deepest position). If this is true, I have absolutely no idea what Tomlin is thinking about doing with him.

He never defended those guys...

And had no control over their judgements (to my knowledge at least). I’m against hate of any kind, but he never said he didn’t hate them as well. Can’t go after him for that. Johnny and I don’t even agree on the Vick thing, but your arguement has no legs.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 31, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yea, this makes no sense. They weren’t mentioned by Johnny at all……………and I feel the same way he does. Maybe not hate but dislike for sure. I have no respect for him. You don’t flick off your fans and you sure as hell don’t brutally murder dogs, or any animal for that matter, especially in the manner he did.

by shleeve on Jul 31, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would we want him?

Why would we even want Vick??? We have a much more respectable version in Dennis Dixon. Charlie Batch is a loyal Steeler and a good help to Ben. He doesn’t have the athleticism, sure, but he has the QB mindset. Vick would bring down the prestige of the organization.. I can’t stand the though of having him on the team, changed or not. I’m a big animal person, no matter what..he did some bad things.. I don’t care that he served his time. I don’t want him anywhere near my team.

by MSsteele on Aug 1, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah-

because all those cases are exactly alike.

and because “jury” means everybody everywhere decides exactly what YOU want them too, all the time.

Vick supported and participated in an ongoing criminal ring and lied repeatedly to both NFL officials and federal law enforcement. And- did all this while knowing kids all over America were looking at him as an example. Your reasoning here is totally non sequitor.

And- OJ and Kobe are innocent, by law :-).

Mike Vick is not.

Cute attempt at sarcasm though…

by tobiathan on Aug 1, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Uhhh what the heck?

When did I mention Simpson or Kobe? If I am not mistaken Kobe’s case ended up how we expect Ben’s to. A liar out for a settlement (correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, I have never liked Kobe, so that argument holds no water.

And OJ, I think he CLEARLY got away with murder. I think it is despicable, and once he finally got put behind bars I feel some justice had been received.

by John Stephens on Aug 4, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe he'll compete at right tackle...

honestly, I love the team, but there’s always someone on the roster it’s hard to root for…

Interesting Vick article...

Linked here that might make some look at his effectiveness as a QB in a different light. Or not. Either way it’s fairly interesting read. Basically talks about how QB stats (passing) can be inflated due to the short dump passes, or in Vick’s case, the lack there of, and explains how his numbers aren’t the best way to grade Vick’s ability and impact.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 31, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions

Good link

Thanks for that link nysteelersfan. Excellent article that tries to put his overall abilities into context.

This whole issue is complicated but what many fans fail to realize is that Michael Vick needs to be evaluated as a quarterback, not a dog killer and convicted felon. The only character concerns that matter are his abilities to be a committed athlete, a good teammate and, as a quarterback, a leader. Obviously he had some shortcomings in those areas with the Falcons but he also had some success. The Goodell ruling means that Vick will be viewed strictly as a No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback this year. Every team in the league including the Steelers IMO would improve its quarterback position by having Vick as the No. 2 or No. 3 guy. The best chance for him to succeed is with a stable organization that isn’t afraid to tackle a major PR challenge, has an experienced and fairly secure head coach and an established No. 1 QB. That’s the kind of environment he needs in order to catch up on playbook knowledge and football fitness while dealing with the media attention that will surely follow his every step. A stint in the UFL wouldn’t do him as much good as being in a positive NFL environment even if he doesn’t play a down for two months or more. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Steelers or Patriots sign him but there are a number of teams that fit the bill, including the Giants, Saints, Panthers and Chargers. Of course, Vick might view the situation differently and opt for a team that presents a chance to compete for a starting job later this season. I would have no problem with him being signed by the Steelers. If he wins the No. 2 or No. 3 job based on performance and commitment to his teammates then he improves the team.

by steeler.lifer on Jul 31, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree completely .lifer...

That’s exactly how I see it. It’s not so much he needs a stable franchise with good people around him as the media has made it seem. It’s more of a case where that’s what would be best for him to succeed as a person overall, not just as a player. At his age, his post football career should be a major factor in his decision, which team will make him a better man. A great team signing him is ideal, but not a necessity. If he is smart, he’ll see that too, and not just sign the more lucritave deal. In my opinion, it all depends on how much weight he puts into Tony Dungy’s words to him. If he listens to Tony, I don’t see a better fit for him than in the "Burgh. Is it likely… no, probably not. But is it best for him all things considered… I think so.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Jul 31, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

The Steelers

will NEVER knowingly sign a convicted felon.

Period.

I can’t believe the same people who call Matt Jones a worthless troublemaker actually argue in FAVOR of Vick as a Steeler……

by tobiathan on Aug 1, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Good read

Thanks for the link. And I agree with you and .lifer are stating. Vick did have a decent record as a starter with an average team and not too great receivers. He did have a decent back field for a couple of those years though. All and all, he was good enough to be a legit starter in this league and I’m certain that if he can get in football shape, he’ll be an asset to some NFL team.

by jharmon64 on Jul 31, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Most likely

he’ll go to the Raiders, since Al “I rule the world” Davis doesn’t really care if his team wins or loses, as long as he has big name (and for the most part, washed up) players on “HIS” Raiders.

Thank you drive through...

by Steel Spike on Jul 31, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

Hehehe

On the Silver and Black Pride, the overwhelming sentiment is “we don’t need a guy like that to besmirch our organization.” My sentiment is….we are the Raiders, right?

Yeah, if Emperor Alpatine wants him, they’ll get him. He thinks the only noteworthy trait of a quarterback is to be able to throw it deep.

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

I see Vick going

to the RAIDERS. That kind of team just suits him. Al Davis is all about fast, strong, athletic players; and if it isn’t obvious enough by now, Jamarcus Russel is a bust, or at least he will be unless he does something different than he did last season.

When he doesnt take Oakland to a winning season this year (and the schedule will be TOUGH) I will expect to see him land in the passenger seat while Jeff Garcia drives and the Raider’s try to find another “franchise” quarterback.

Ding, ding, ding. Michael Vick is cheap. Just what Al Davis needs, since he blew all his money on Darrius Heyward-Bey. Lol. Man that owner cracks me up.

It's Orange Crush time. And no I am NOT talking about the soft-drink.
Which I beg the question: "Can liquid really be... soft?"
