The Baltimore Ravens
I thought, with the off season lull in full effect, we could take this time to take a look at the pre-camp, pre-season rosters of our divisional opponents, and try to get some sort of a realistic look at what we can expect from our division, the AFC North. Starting with last years best opponent, and in some circles, this years biggest divisional competition, The Baltimore Ravens.
Last year was a great year for a team some thought would be a few years away from regaining their stride, with a new head coach in place, a shiny new QB of the future, and a few other coaching moves (notably Cam Cameron in as OC). But, as we've all learned, you never really know what to expect in today's NFL. Off of a disappointing 5-11 season, the Ravens rebounded nicely to a more than respectable 11-5. Ups and downs are nothing new to this franchise, who over the last eight seasons have see-sawed above, below or right near the .500 mark pretty regularly.
Offensively it all starts with the QB situation. A franchise who historically has not had the QB play to keep the good streaks going, may have found just such a guy in Joe Flacco. He is a laid back, quiet guy, who directly contrasts with the face of the franchise, Ray Lewis, at least in terms of personality. Since last year they've moved on (finally) from the Kyle Boller mistake, at the same time bringing in Jordan Beck (Cam Cameron's project QB) and welcoming back Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, quite possibly to a revised role in their offense. The second year tends to be a rough one on young signal callers, so we'll all see how Joe Flacco deals with the diversity of having a full season of game tapes on him for defensive coordinators to watch, and re-watch. My opinion on Flacco is that he has all the physical tools to succeed. He throws one of the best, most accurate and catchable deep balls of any QB in the league. He shows the want to learn, but the learning process has just begun for him.
With a deep and talented backfield to support the young gun, they should have enough skill to ease the pressure. Willis McGahee (and his knee- warning video is disturbing) , Ray Rice, and Le'Ron McClain are a three headed beast that can run around, through, and past a lot of defenders in this league. But with Le'Ron being moved to more of an exclusive FB role, and McGahee's health always seeming to be up in the air, some of the younger guys may be looked at more seriously than we all thought they would. Jalen Parmele (2nd year out of Toledo) and Cedric Peermen, who I like a lot, could see some time.
Where the offense may struggle is in the ball catcher department. Derrick Mason is getting a bit long in the tooth, but is still the premier wide out on this team, catching 80 passes last year for just over 1,000 yards and 5 TD's. Mark Clayton has put up decent numbers in his career, but has yet to fully reach the potential that was seen coming out of Oklahoma as a first round (22nd overall) pick. The same can be said for Demetrius Williams and Yamon Figurs, though Williams was not drafted as high, and Figurs was drafted as a return specialist by most accounts. At tight end, Todd Heap's production has slipped as of late, due to injuries, age and most likely some play calling. His yards per catch have stayed in the same ballpark, it's just the amount of catches that has dwindled. To assist Heap, the Ravens have brought in former Eagle, LJ Smith. He failed to be a big part of a fairly successful offense in Philly for the last few years, but you never know how he'll fit in in Baltimore. He certainly has the ability, the production just seems to not be on par with his perceived talent. The Ravens also brought in former Bengal/ Patriot Kelley Washington, as well as having several young WR's on the roster with the hopes of one or two taking a big step forward this year.
The offensive line will be similar, but fairly new in its parts. Matt Birk replaces Jason Brown, who moved on to St. Louis with a big contract to show for his work in Baltimore. Rookie Michael Oher (the teams first round pick) is most likely pencilled in at RT, replacing Adam Terry and Willie Anderson. Giant tackle Jared Gaither is still in place at LT, and Ben Grubbs and Chris Chester are seemingly pegged as starting guards.
Defensively this team is still a fomidable group. Led by 14 year pro Ray Lewis, you know the linebacking core will come to play. Terrell Suggs, Jarrett Johnson, Ray Ray and who ever they find to replace Bart Scott, whether it be Prescott Burgess, one of their plethera of rookie LB's or my pick Jameel McClain, will certainly be up to the task at hand. The D-Line will be stout as usual with Mr. Ngata up front along with fellow linemen Kelly Gregg, Justin Bannan and Trevor Price. In the secondary Ed Reed will most likely be his usual self. Gone are Chris McAllister and Jim Leonhard, but in their place will be new-be's Dominique Foxworth and rookie Lardarius Webb who I think will be a good one. Dawan Landry steps back in as a starter, but Tom Zbikowski should push him for playing time. We all know these guys, no real surprises here. We know what they've got, and you bet we'll be ready for it.
In the third phase of the game, special teams, the Ravens will have a new face in the crowd. Graham Gano, a rookie out of Florida State, most notably known as the punter who stopped (stopped them, didn't have them downed... stopped) two punts on the inch line last year, will be trying to replace Matt Stover, the only kicker the franchise has ever known, going back to the move from Cleveland. Giving Gano a veteran push will be Steve Hauschka (spell and say that a few times, I dare you) a second year kicker from NC State. Gano is a special teams stud, or at least was one in college. As a punter, aside from his known exploits, he averaged 42 yards per attempt, and as a kicker has more than enough boot for the job. He had a 67 yard field goal negated by penaly, and has made (and kept) kicks from 64 and 65 yards respectfully. With Matt Stover's range declining towards the end of his time in Baltimore, that kind of field goal range is game changing, and I'm sure welcomed by all in purple and black.
Rookies:
Michael Oher- Tackle- Round 1 (23rd overall)- Projected starter at RT 6'4" 309lbs. Ole Miss
Paul Kruger- Defensive End/ OLB- Round 2 (57th overall)- 6'4" 263lbs. Utah Good first step, solid passrusher
Lardarius Webb- Cornerback- Round 3 (88th overall) 5'10" 179lbs. Nicholls State
Jason Phillips- MLB- Round 5 (137th overall) 6'1" 240lbs. TCU
Davon Drew- Tightend- Round 5 (149th overall) 6'4" 256lbs. East Carolina
Cedric Peerman- Halfback- Round 6 (185th overall) 5'9" 216lbs. Virginia
I figured a take a step back look at our toughest divisional opponent would bring some chatter, and give us all a break of the "he says this plyer is better than this one" talk we've had to go by the last few weeks. I tried to be fair, borderline optomistic for the Ravens, first to make it seem we don't dislike all of them, and second to make it seem like they may have a shot to beat us this year. Maybe make it a fun debate... Though I'm sure a certain someone's eyebrow (note I didn't say eyebrow's) will be metioned at least once.

Nice Post
Nice balanced summary of the Ravens situation. Two things I’d like to add.
First, I give a lot of credit to John Harbaugh for what went on in Baltimore last year. Much like what Tomlin has done with our defense, Harbaugh took a defense that was focused on being tough to a fault and turned them into a legitimately great defense that can complement toughness with intelligence. Our defense got all the credit last year, but Baltimore’s defense was a close second to an historically good unit. I think the days of them accepting a 38-7 loss because they shut down the running game are gone. Honestly the thought of a disciplined and consistent Ravens team frightens me a little, and I have a feeling that that’s what we’re going to see over the next few years. Losing Rex Ryan will be a big blow, but my gut tells me they’ll be fine.
Second, Flacco. I think he did well for himself: he was an average game manager on an outstanding team. To be average as a rookie QB is an accomplishment, and it suggests that the chance of him being a complete bust is low. However, I disagree that he has an “amazing deep ball” like everyone has given him credit for; he has great arm strength, but from what I’ve seen, his downfield accuracy is rather poor. He also still only put up his average stats with a very good offensive coordinator, defense, and running game. Ben had those things as a rookie and he finished in the top 5 in passer rating. Flacco finished 22nd. Flacco’s performance shouldn’t be held against him, but he hardly showed the makings of a top 5 QB either. Still, he looks better than Kyle Boller and he doesn’t completely melt under pressure. The Ravens have enough talent on their team to compete for a Super Bowl if they can just get decent, non-choking play out of their QB. Flacco may very well provide that for them for a number of years to come, which sets them up to be a Steeler-esque perennial contender.
The Ravens don’t have me shaking in my boots or anything, but I don’t think they’re “aging” or in cap trouble or on the verge of collapse. They had a lot of turnover this year, so I could change my tune, but I think they are pretty well set up to sustain the level of play they showed this year.
This is only slightly related, but James Walker recently said this: “Only time will tell. But going into the season, I feel Pittsburgh is better prepared to repeat than any team in the past four years.” I’ve been getting a pretty good vibe from the team, but it’s nice to hear a somewhat objective media source say the same thing.

Cool...
I was going of what I saw with Flacco. I didn’t see him week in week out, but every time I did, he made a throw 30+ yards downfield that seemed right on the money. Maybe “amazing” wasn’t a great word to use, but all in all we’re on the same page. I am not a huge numbers guy, but I feel they tell most of the story, and I did not realize Flacco’s were that poor.
I definately should have had some love for Harbough though. He did a great job in his first year.

Fair enough. Maybe I watched all the other games. It seemed like whenever I saw him throw deep, it was 10 yards over a guy’s head.

That may be...
I could have seen his lucky throws, not ready to bet my life he can put it through a tire from 40 yards away either. Until either of us get paid to disect film, it’s a question we’ll both have. Been wrong before, not too scared of being wrong again (in this case, kind of hoping I am).

That's what I've been trying to say.
I live in Maryland so I tend to catch all of the Ravens’ and Redskins’ games when they don’t interfere with Steelers’ games (and even then I try to TIVO Ravens games to watch them later). I never saw Flacco have a game where I thought “Wow, this kid is going to be a premiere QB and we are in some trouble.” He is definitely above or around average on a very good team. So as long as he doesn’t make other defenses look good, they will be in very good shape.

But
When he connected on those deep balls, they were beautiful. This was the most exciting offense that I have ever seen the Ravens have, and it wasn’t even the best one statistically. I think Flacco will improve greatly this year. If he can get 20 TD’s and 3,000 yards, I will be happy.

Good to see you around BadMaafala. Seems like it’s been a while since we’ve gotten your insights.
Nice post NY. I’m very very much in the air about where I think Baltimore lies this year. They are always tough, but I could also see Flacco slumping badly. Just cause he was “steady” last year does not bode well for the future this year. If their running game is on track it will obviously make it easier on him though. Cam seems to be a good OC for him, hiding his faults as well as possible.

Yeah, I’ve been busy, on business trips, and on vacation. All that and there’s nothing really to talk about for another month yet.
I’d love to see Cameron get another HC gig. If Flacco had Arians calling plays for him, he’d be competing for a job with Mark Sanchez this year.

Yeah, but I’ve heard people say they’re “aging” for the past 3 years. I would have agreed a few years ago when your CB’s, upon which your defense depended, were getting old and injured, the youngest “key” piece of your defense was a 28-29 year old Reed, and before Ngata really established himself as the future of your defense. Even though your old CB’s are gone and Lewis has slowed down, you had a really good defense last year, build around a young NT and a late-prime safety. That tells me the Ravens have turned the corner and aren’t going anywhere. I hope I’m wrong.

Good Post NY
I think they BrownRavens could beat the Steelers to the division title if Pittsburgh slips. My prediction (and vote) is that the Steelers win the AFCN and the BrownRavens take a wild card. I see Tennessee with the other wild card.
By the way, I like NE*, SD and Indy to take their AFC divisions with NYG, AZ, Carolina and Minnesota (if Favre plays) or Chicago (much improved with Cutler) in the NFC. Wild card teams will come from Philly, Dallas, NO or Atlanta.

BAL still tough, but better than last year?
I clearly remember thinking this just before the AFC title game last year:
“Dear God, please, please, please, let Pittsburgh win one more time, this is the Ravens’ last, best chance to beat the Steelers for a while, if Pittsburgh can pull this one out then they’ve weathered the storm. Amen.”
I’m not trying to be cocky or jinx our team, but I think that, for the most part, the Ravens experienced more losses than gains this offseason (call this “cautious optimism” on my part). I’m thinking of B. Scott and J. Brown. Maybe these aren’t huge losses (not as big as I was hoping for), but considering (1) the replacements, and (2) the lack of additions to the WRs and the DBs, I don’t think the Ravens will be better this year than they were last year. Flacco will be better, but I’d think he’d have to make a very significant jump in order for the Ravens to post net improvements as a team, and that’s going to be a tall order (knock on wood). I mean, who does Flacco think he is? Roethlisberger?
by gcn on Jul 6, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Lack of additions to CB?
We lost Chris McAlister and brought in Dominique Foxworth, Chris Carr, and drafted Lardarius Webb. How is that a lack of addition? Jason Brown does hurt a little, but Birk is still a top 10 center in this league and having him gives us time to find a new one for the future.
Bart Scott was great because of our system just like the rest of the players who have left were. Remember Adalius Thomas? Considered by many to be the best all-around defensive player in football in 2006 and went to the Pats after. Have you heard his name since? Bart Scott will have a rough time not having Ray Lewis next to him.

I don’t know, He’s still got Ryan, and he knows how to use him, I think he’ll do fine. Thomas is in a defense that doesn’t allow great stats, he’s still dang good.
It’s like Kendrell Bell under D. LeBeau, a great DC can take a strength and amplify it while covering weaknesses.

My bad, didn’t “refresh my recollection” before that last post, I’d agree that Foxworth (probably the best CB on his last team- Atlanta?) and Carr are good, young additions. Webb might be, as well. As far as Scott, though, I guess we’ll see.

I think so. Ozzie Newsome evaluates talent as good as anyone in this league and would not have paid him that much if he wasn’t that good. I think our system will utilize his abilities.

You have to respect/hate the Ravens, especially after last year. Playing each other twice a year has some interesting effects, for example the number of “dirty” hits that get thrown around in flame wars that happen between these teams.
Like Tomlin says, Iron Sharpens Iron, so I’m all for the Ravens being great again this year. The tougher we make each other the better we both get, and it spirals upward from there.
I hope Cincy is tough this year too, otherwise our schedule is a little too easy for my taste. I nice safe trip to the playoffs is not how the Steelers win Super Bowls.
As for Flacco, he’s in the AFC, so he’ll get judged against Brady, BB, Manning and Palmer, so he’ll have a tough time getting credit since he’s not a rookie. I don’t see him being a top 5 QB, but he can be the just out of Pro-Bowl caliber QB that is all the Ravens need to be a force.
Let’s see how the Ravens replace Ryan, that will determine a lot, a slightly lesser DC can mean a world of difference for the Ravens or Steelers. Like after DL left, we were still good, but nothing like the big game dominance after he came back.

Great Post
Don’t mind the “just for fun” threads, but it’s better to discuss the football that happens on the field, rather than the stats that result from it. The Ravens are a team that make their mark on the turf.
Anyway, I voted ‘em out of the playoffs. Great team, easy schedule, but I think the Steelers take the division. I think the wildcards come from somewhere else this year. At least one should come from the AFC South. Two of those teams will steamroll the others. (Just don’t ask me which!) The Jets or the Phins will have a hard time with their schedules, but I think one of them proves dominant over the other and follows NE into the playoffs.

Thanks for the very honest post NY.
I think you nailed pretty much everything except for a few parts.
- John Beck, not Jordan Beck. But I have heard some good things about Beck and that he could really make a push towards the 2nd QB spot. But I think that is Troy’s since he knows this team and knows this offense with this team better then Beck will by September. But it is going to be a lot of fun seeing both those guys battle it out in pre-season and training camp, which I will make sure to be at.
- The WR I thought you broke down very nicely. Not too harsh, but didn’t back down from exploiting our weakness. The only position that worries me this year is WR. It is going to be tough if Mason goes down and I think that could very well happen given his age. I expect big things from out other guys though. Clayton really shined in the final half of the season last year and a healthy Williams is going to be nice. That dude can catch any ball, just can’t stay healthy. I know its not your fault, but you forgot about 2nd year WR, Marcus Smith. This guy can ball and has been one of the one of the hottest stories throughout OTA’s. If you do not know too much about him, he was our 4th round draft choice last year out of New Mexico. He was originally recruited as a Running Back, but made the switch to WR. This is why I like the guy. He is 6’1" about 220 and is not afraid of taking a hit. Look for him to see a good amount of passes. F*** Yamon Figurs!
- I am really surprised you did not talk of Tavares Gooden taking Bart Scott’s place. He was a 3rd round pick out of the one and only U of Miami. This guy is a athletic freak and is going to be a better player then Bart was. He has all the physical tools to be the next great Ravens LB and is learning from his mentor, Ray Lewis. Ray has taken “T-Good” under his wing and has only great things to say about him. We replaced Jamie Sharper with Ed Hartwell. We replaced Ed Hartwell with Bart Scott. We replace Bart Scott with Gooden. And thank you for noticing that Leonhard was OUR BACK-UP last year and Landry is the starter. I am sick and tired of hearing everyone say, especially the “experts,” that losing Leonhard is going to be so hard to overcome when he wasn’t even the starter. Landry brings more to the table and is a better tackler then Leonhard will ever be. He was a product of the great system we have in B-More and will perish just like all the other Ravens who have left have perished in the past.
- Another spot that people think we will hurt at is the D. Cor area. Rex Ryan is one of the best DC in the game and one of the best coaches my Ravens ever had. Some say it will be tough to replace him, which it will, but not to the point where it is going to cost us games. We replaced Marvin Lewis with Mike Nolan. We replaced Mike Nolan with Rex Ryan. We now replace Rex Ryan with Greg Mattison and I have full confidence we will show little to no signs of weakness.
- In Special Teams, you forgot about THE BEST Punter in the league, Sam Koch. That man is very important to our team because of the field position battle we like to play in every week. I see Koch having a pro-bowl year this year. I am also excited about Graham Gano as well. Not really big on the Steve Hauschka stuff, I just don’t see any “clutch” in him when it is a game winning kick. Gano has a swagger about him and was the best kicker in college for a reason. It has been reported that he has hit numerous kicks that were 60+ yards with room to spare. Excited to see this kid get a shot.
Thanks for the write-up and if you would like me to elaborate on any other parts, please ask and I will be happy to.
I can’t imagine the posts for the Browns when it comes their turn. We already know what kind of franchise they are and where they will be going next year.

After Lloyd and Green, when we ran a revolving door of FA at LB for a while, everyone expected the Steelers to drop off each time someone left. Never happened. Like Tomlin says, the standard doesn’t change. As long as the system is intact with a smart DC it’s all good.
Give a big chunk of credit to the FO too, you have to draft the system to do what the Steelers and Ravens do, and you have to support the coaches and GM 100%.

Thank you...
Put it together on the fly yesterday. Slow day at work. Had to fill it somehow.
John Beck…. Simple mistake. He was a good college QB, and could definately be a decent #2. Not as young as most third year guys though, and a weaker arm than you’d want. Two knocks on him, but Cam must like him. He drafted him, trained him, and if they were still in Miami, he’d likely be the starter right now, and the Pennington trade would never of happened. Not saying it would be the right move, but that is the most odvious path that they were on, I think. Jordan Beck, MLB from Cal I think. Kicked around the league for a while, I think he’s still playing.
Simply overlooked Marcus Smith. He had a solid performence at the combine, and has some good upside.
Same goes for Gooden. This was a larger oversight. He is the Timmons of Baltimore, that is the best comparison for his potential and ability. My Ravens fan buddy would be scorning me, he refers to Tavares as “Sweet Baby Ray” and has been pulling for him to get playing time for as long as he’s been in the league. Another Ray-Ray in training…scary.
I wanted Gano. No pulling punches. I like Reed, and I like Sepulveda, I am more than happy with both. But here’s a scenario… Reed walks, for big time kicker money (It could happen, see Kris Brown) and even though Sepulveda has a boot, he also has an injury history now. It would be great (especially after last year) to have an insurance policy for both. We’d have a bomb leg kicker, and a solid short kick punt “specialist” if we needed one, and has shown some elite punt accuracy. This guys got real ability. He will be a game changer. Not often you hear that about a kicker/ punter, and statements like that tend to get laughed off, I stick by it.
Any more insight you’d like to give, I’ll take. I like to know what we’re dealing with. I’ll probably put one of these together for Cincy and Cleveland, and I am hoping for the same positive feedback from their respective fans. Having a solid debate with good info going back and forth makes us all smarter fans. Nothing wrong with that.

Are you saying
Glass is 93% full or 7% empty?
