Anybody remember 1982? A very strange season
1982 represented Bradshaw's last full season, a season of ups and downs.
We started out with three huge victories over DAL, CIN, and HOU. At the time many thought DAL and CIN would meet in the SB. In our other three wins we scored at least 28 points against KC, NE, and CLE. The three losses were to SEA (0-16), BUF (0-13) and CLE (9-10). The offense either was unstoppable or anemic. In each loss at least three interceptions were thrown by Bradshaw or a combination of Bradshaw/Stout. In Buffalo the quarterbacks went a combines 4-23 for -2 passing yards. In the playoffs we lost a tough game to San Diego 28-31, but at the time we did not match up well with the Chargers, this marked the third loss in a row to them.

’82 season was awful. Began with the prospect of a strike looming, a virtual cerainty. The Steelers 2 wins prior to the strike were both classic games. Rookie Gary Anderson, picked up out of the Buffalo scrap heap, kicked 5 FGs in the Monday Night opener at Dallas, and then the Steelers beat the defending AFC Champion Bengals late. Interestingly, game was in OT, and Steeler passed from the 3 to win it, rather than kick the FG.
Then, the strike…..it sucked, no other way to describe it.
Due to the expanded “tournament” in which 8 teams qualified from each conference, and both AFC Sunday games were in the 1:00 time slot, I was denied (had to work….so no sports bar trip) an opportunity for the only time to see the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs, getting the Stupid Jets instead.
Steelers held an 11 point lead, 4Q, with the ball, when Bradshaw, in what would be his final playoff game, with a clear path to run for the first down, threw a bad pick, San Diego scored, on 4th down, following a Steeler pic which was overturned by penalty (I THINK I have this right), and then scored with 2 minutes left to win it.
I remember...
Which is why I was so happy when we kiccked their a$$ in the playoffs this year. Payback for ’82 as well as ’94!
Dang man
You all just wanted to even out the emotions huh? We win the big one and you keep pulling scabs off of old wounds. Next you’ll have some Sid Bream flashbacks to relive. Just kidding, but it does bring back some bad memories. I also remember the Steelers losing to the Oilers on a Thursday night in 1980 and Howard Cosell saying “this is the end of a Dynasty,” but they (Steelers) will be back. Those words haunted me for 20+ years.

Short Season
Canceled a ton of games. Boring fall in 82! Was 87 the year they played with scabs? I think Steve Bono (who went on to have a formidable career at SF) was our strike QB in 87.
I remember the playoff game in 82 because it was the last stand for the team of the 70s. That was the first (of two) time that the Chargers came to Pittsburgh as an underdog and upset the Steelers in a playoff game. I remember feeling there was no way we could lose…but we did. That was the first time I realized that the 70s were done and that while I thought it was our birthright to play for the Lombardi I was sadly mistaken. The start of a 26 year wander through the NFL desert had begun…
