wondering about training camp...
I am making a trip up to the Burgh the first week in Aug for my family reunion. I am planning on going to the Aug 7 night practice. I was wondering what the atmosphere was like because I have never been befor. I know this may be a dumb question, but is there alcohol served there or can you bring your own? What should I expect? Really I am just wondering what it is like and if there are any pointers or suggestions I sould know about befor going. (I am kind of in a rush so sorry about the spelling errors.) Thanks.

Dunno about the night practice although I may be going for the first time this year. As far as the regular sessions no alcohol is allowed to be brought in, and no alcohol is sold to my knowledge when I was there last year.

Alcohol not permitted
They do reserve the right to check bags and coolers. Check out the link below from Steelers.com that provides details including any restrictions. The atmosphere is always awesome if crowded. I have never been to the night practice at the high school but I’m pretty sure Peter King from SI has been there and has written about the atmosphere. I will see if I can locate the article.

My favorite part of training camp
I’ve been going to the Latrobe HS night practice for over 5 years with my Dad. We travel from Richmond VA. I have to say, it is a great time.
We spend Thursday at the college watching training camp, and then on friday morning we do the tour of Heinz Field(which is great as well, you get to go everywhere including the lockerroom).. After that we eat at Grille 36 and then head over to stand in line at Latrobe HS.
Get there early and expect to stand around for at least 2-3 hours. Once you are let in, you’ll line up around the fence (or you can sit in the stands if you want). Wait some more, and then eventually a motorcade of school buses (yes, yellow regular school buses) will appear and come towards the entrance of the field. As soon as they park, the players get off one by one, pads in hand and ready to practice. The crowd is going nuts at this point, welcoming them to field. They will sign autographs for about 15 minutes (walking around the fence) and after that the practice begins.
They do various drills, then some 8 on 8’s where there is an announcer calling the plays. Backs on backers is always exciting too. It can get really intense sometimes, like last year I remember Lawrence Timmons destroying people with hits and the other players getting upset. You have a great view if you are standing by the fence. After the practice is done, the players get back on the buses and leave. If you stick around, you are treated to a great fireworks show.
No alcohol allowed, as its sponsored by the school. Trust me though, you will develop your own sort of “high” just by feeding off of the atmosphere.
Hopefully this helps. (And sorry, I was in a huge hurry when writing this)
