Preseason Week #1 Open Thread: Arizona Cardinals @ Defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers

Football's baaaaaack. Just like we do for each and every Steelers games, here is your open thread to discuss tonight's action as it unfolds. We've gone over a few things to watch for and you guys and gals have thrown your two cents in about what you'd like to see from the defending champion Steelers. Hard to believe we're finally here - football's return to our lives, even if it just in a somewhat unsatisfying preseason form.

The thing I'm most anxious to see? Whether or not we can escape the first of four preseason games without any significant injuries. Fingers crossed.

Keep the conversation civil and enjoy what I hope is the first step towards Pittsburgh repeating as NFL champions early next February.

Go Steelers!

I've never been more exciting for a preseason game

BTSC has got me more involved in the off-season than I have ever been before. I appreciate the great work you have done to make that happen.

Looks like our OL is picking up right where they left off last year

Loss of 1 yard on 1st down. Ben gets hit as he releases the ball on 2nd down.

LOL

I noticed, but didn’t want to be the first to say something negative. It’s nice to see football again, but I do think that heads will roll if Ben gets injured in camp…… but that was a reasonable run on 3rd and short – nice push

Some things I've noticed...

- I. Redman is a very fluid runner,
- Why did we waste so much carries by giving the ball to J. Vincent instead of Tank?
- In Ratliff’s sack did our CB bullrushed the Offensive lineman?
- Ziggy betta not dance after sacks.

Redman 1, Tank 0. Tank has blocked well today thought.

I was actually having this conversation recently. Johnny U never followed the Colts when they left Baltimore. But he embraced the Ravens when they came to town. Even though the Ravens are only 15 years old, the football culture must be pretty deep.

Are there still a lot of Colts fans there or did they switch teams like Mr.Unitas?

it never got weird enough for me

Quick thoughts from DaTruth:

 — Sonny Harris, no. 73, caused more havoc tonight than Ziggy Hood. He was all over the field and looked really quick and big for a DE. If he keps playing like this, there is no way that you can cut him. Man, he and Ziggy could have this DL looking good for years to come. Did anyone else notice no. 73 out there making plays?

— FWP, Mendenhall, Moore, Redman & Tank at FB. Please Tomlin, make this happen.

— I love Sweed’s two catches, but Wallace looks like a game-breaker with good hands. Sweed has improved, but can Tomlin trust him?

— Tony Hills didn’t stand out, and that is a good thing. He played a pretty good game at LT. His man never got a sniff. Kudos also to Legursky, R. Foster and Shipley.

— You had to love the way Tomlin met Burnett while coming off the field after he fumbled. You also have to love how Burnett responded with that pick. He and Keenan Lewis looked good.

— Willie Gay looked solid at CB. Very comfortable and fluid. Didn’t notice Ryan Mundy, but Roy Lewis had a good game in special teams.

— Bruce Davis actually showed a pulse. He still needs some time in the weight room. Might actually play better at ILB than OLB, which is too bad because D. Woods and K. Fox have those two spots locked up.

— Mendenhall better take off the heels and run. He has a world of talent but still has a lot to learn. Just admit it, the Bus really spoiled us. Simply the best big running back over 250 pounds in NFL history.

— Dennis Dixon looked good. I don’t think Batch is going to be able to hold this kid off for long.

— Still, the guy that I was most pleasantly surprised by tonight was rookie DE Rashon Harris. If he and Ziggy continue to look like they did tonight, then this will be a heck of draft for K. Colbert. And then if R. Foster and Redman make it as undrafted free agents, then Colbert just might have his special draft.

— I think Ward and Holmes are going to need Wallace’s speed and presence on the field to have the space to do what they want to do. All in all, a pretty impressive showing for a first preseason game.

by datruth4life on Aug 14, 2009 12:40 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed on most

-Mendenhall still looks like he’s hesitating. The couple of times he did hit the gas, he looked good. Other times, looked like a larger version of Amos Zeroue.

-Do Harrison and Woodley even need to see the field again until the opener? Those 2 are ridiculous.

-I think Vincent getting so many carries was a message to the 2 rookie RB’s. As a runner, Summers did not look good.

-Wallace and Sweed both had some really nice plays.

-Donovan Woods looked really good at times.

-Bruce Davis showed quite a bit more than a pulse IMO. He didn’t set the world on fire, but he was far better than expected. More play like that and he’ll see action in the regular season.

-Anthony Madison was out there a lot and although he got screwed out of a beautiful pick by a bogus call, Leinart and Breaston were torching him on short routes.

-Totally agree on Tony Hills. Focused on him for quite a few plays in the second half and was impressed.

-Carey Davis: 1 rush, 2 yards. Sounds about right. [eyeroll]

-On a local product note, what are the Cards thinking running Steve Breaston out on the field well in to the second half?

-To me, the #1 positive I took from this game is that Brian St. Pierre is thousands of miles from St. Vincent. He must have some seriously incriminating photos of Whisenhunt.

by pghnorthside on Aug 14, 2009 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Other observations

First of you guys covered most of it and I couldn’t really watch closely but a couple of things in addition:

-Nobody told Shaun McDonlad that he wasn’t in the competition anymore for third. He got open and caught balls. Yes it was with the third team, but he the same amount of catches as Wallace, Sweed, Ward and Holmes combined. Not saying he gets number three – or even four, but that we may have our deepest WR group ever.

-Redman looked more solid running than Mendenhall and I don’t think it was about the competition. He lowered his head, he hit holes, he finished the runs low and hard. Is he a great back. I don’t think so, but it seems that Mendy is making other people look good in comparison

by SteelerBuddha on Aug 14, 2009 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

He was out with the second team too, and looked very good. Redman isn’t a great talent, but he runs the right way, find hole fast, hit hole hard, run low and vertical. That will get you an NFL career, esp. if your 230 lbs.

Redman will make the team this year or next if he keeps on doing what he is doing.

Palko! come on, the kid is a baller. He’s gonna be their back up when they settle on 1 QB.

by Phantaskippy on Aug 14, 2009 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Well
As a runner, Summers did not look good.

To be fair, he barely got any carries. And as a blocker he looked really solid.

+1 on Sonny Harris

Glad you pointed him out Truth. Harris looked very strong and seemed to consistently get a push into the backfield on passing plays and hold the line on runs. Ziggy might have played against better O-linemen when he was first in the game at LDE but he got caught up in the wash and pushed back fairly regularly. As the game went on and he was moved around he looked better. When he lined up on his feet he looked very quick and got his sack from that stance, taking advantage of an OL going the wrong way.

Another pleasant surprise was the play of the backup OL. Parquet was the only one who seemed to struggle. Foster pulled effectively a couple times and along with Shipley and Urbik did a solid job against second and third teamers. Legursky more than held his own with the first unit. Hills and Capizzi did not stand out for any bad reasons and I thought Hills actually showed some decent athleticism trying to get in front of some runs.

Mendenhall was tentative but got a bit better as the game went along. He had a nice driving plunge on the first short yardage that the Steelers converted. His best runs came when the intended hole was blocked and he found space elsewhere. But overall an average performance. I think Vincent got a lot of looks because he has put in the time on the practice roster. I expect him to be one of the first cuts. After his first run he showed nothing. Redman on the other hand has earned a long look. Summers was surprisingly good at FB and also on special teams. That might be the only way he makes the team and in that case would close the door on Davis (finally).

Two great catches by Sweed, the second coming back to an underthrown ball by Charlie. Poor concentration on a third pass he could have caught. Wallace looked very impressive. Fluid, strong, good hands. The pass across the middle from Dixon was a pro throw and a pro catch. He almost made a great catch on the underthrown bomb by Dixon in the end zone. He looked good on the kickoff return too. Had his head up and picked his way and got as much as he could. McDonald showed how valuable it is to have an experienced receiver working the zones and finding the open space. Dixon did a nice job waiting for him to hit the open areas. That kid Black had a real nice catch of a bullet in traffic from Dixon.

David Johnson was very solid as a blocker but doesn’t look fluid enough to be a receiving threat. Hard to tell. But as a blocker he was driving guys back and sealing off lineman at the edge. Tank Summers also did a surprisingly good job as a lead blocker. Redman was a real surprise, especially on the first TD run where he absorbed a solid hit outside the goalline and just powered through it. Nice blocking by all.

Donovan Woods is a keeper. He reads out plays, knows where to go and is around the ball. Davis had his head in the game and showed some progress. Not very strong but fairly quick which really surprised me and knew what he had to do. Arnold Harrison looked awful. Shantz looked like a practice squad guy with some potential. Among the DBs, Madison looked terrible in coverage, Roy Lewis is behind the rookies, Carter still can’t make a tackle in the open field. There might be some cause for concern at backup safety. Keenan Lewis looked like he belongs. Great looking athlete, a couple nice hits, closer in coverage than a few veterans. Gay looked very good in limited time. The Burnett pick was a great read, the kind of play Ike would also be all over but drop. I liked how Burnett caught punts and recovered from the fumble. Tough love from Tomlin after that one and he showed he’s got some fortitude.

Sepulveda looked great but a bit slow getting the punt away. A couple close to being blocked.

First game for everyone. Looks like Dixon is going to get a lot of work in the preseason and I think he gets a B-minus overall for a decent performance. He had good pocket presence, didn’t panic, made his reads and the right throws, including a couple of beauties. Good competition at WR and the secondary with lots of young talent. People have to remember that some of the backups looked very good playing against backups. Solid first step for the entire team.

by steeler.lifer on Aug 14, 2009 1:47 AM EDT reply actions

kudos to madison on the pick though

That was an amazing catch and I was glad to see Gruden give the refs some grief over the PI call. That was just a battle for the ball and he had great position.

by steeler.lifer on Aug 14, 2009 1:59 AM EDT reply actions

well
  • I think Anthony MAdison did a nice job all around his assignments, didnt see him getting killed in coverage as u guys said.
*Tony Hills never was in trouble, nice job kiddo!
  • I dont think Arnold Harrison was awfull at all, first of all he can play inside and outside, second actually I think he pass rush 100 times better then Bruce Davis and Patrick Bailey together. By the way, Patrick Bailey is terrible as fuck in pass rushing from the outside, he should try to play ILB instead, even so, not sure how much can he improve there, specially with woods and fox locked in. If he doesn show the same tenacity he showed last year in ST until first week of regular season, I dont doubt he might go to PS or fired together with Davis .. I also dont like Andre Frazier so I say we are very bad in OLB depth.

*Ryan Mundy is not reliable, who could be a backup FS instead of him ? Perhaps Ratliff?

  • Who was the guy getting most snaps in the second n third teams LG position by the way?

I think Anthony MAdison did a nice job all around his assignments, didnt see him getting killed in coverage as u guys said.

I respectfully suggest you were watching the superbowl rerun, where Madison did not play.

Willie Colon doesn’t get flagged because he has long arms; he gets flagged because he sucks. - cliff harris is still a punk!

I counted...

Four passes that were caught by his man or at least in his area. Just on his first drive. He made Matt Leinart look like what Cardinal’s fans dreamed he’d look like.

overall impressions from the game...

1st and foremost, we have a punter again!
I know the D is excited knowing that we can start pinning people back inside their 20 with some regularity this season.
A Pro Bowl season for RoboPunter perhaps?
2nd of all, I reeeeeeallllly love the goalline package with Frank @ FB and Redman as the tailback.
Mr. Redman looks like what I was hoping Frank would look like. If not better. I know its very early and it was against the Cards 2nd/3rd string, but I like the attitude Redman runs with. And Frank can definately block his way onto the 53 man roster imo. He laid some nice blocks in the goalline package and he just has the attitude that’s been lacking in the short yardage/goalline lineup as of late. We’ll miss you Carey Davis. Thanx for the memories. Next up…
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEED!
Let us not forget than Ben pretty much begged for another big target after Plax left. Sweed was drafted by request of the franchise QB. If he can be that big target Ben wants out there to add to the Super Bowl MVP’s and Heath, look out NFL!
This years rookie class is looking like they don’t want to wait very long to make an impact on this team. Burnett, Wallace, Hood, Frank and Redman looked good in their black and gold debut. I can’t wait to see them grow and develop this year.
All in all, it was a nice performance tonite. I can’t wait until these games start counting.

speaking of rookie performances...

Gruden was very smooth in his broadcasting debut. I like what he brings to the table as far as his experience and insight on the game from a coach’s perspective. Much better than Tony K. Much much better.

As a Cardinals fan

Good job last night, I’m still mad about the Super Bowl but you guys are a good team.

Although, if we took Pierre out of the game sooner it probably would have been closer than it was.

The roster fight for jobs is fierce ...

particularly after last night’s game. A few added thoughts the morning after:

— I don’t think I gave Sepulveda his due. I was so focused on our young players that I just took it for granted that he was stroking it. Hope he stays healthy.

— I might have went a little overboard with Rashon Harris, but the kid really surprised me. He pushed the pocket, disengaged from blocks to get heat on the passer, showed some burst and was also stout at the point of attack. If he keeps playing like this, you have to cut either Nick Eason or Travis Kirschke. Both are in the last year of their deals but you could have this kid for next to nothing for the next 4 years. Can you imagine Ziggy and Harris in about 3 to 4 years after working with DL John Mitchell? Wow, 3-4 DE’s are so hard to find and the Steelers might have found 2 in one draft.

— If Anthony Madison makes this team, it will be as a special teams guy. You can tell he’s not comfortable playing corner, especially when you give your man a 10 to 12-yard cushion each play (I know I wasn’t the only person yelling at the screen, “Why is he giving his man so much cushion, he’s not even in the television picture he is so far off his man.”

— I think the Tank did a solid job of blocking and playing special teams. I think he was a little overanxious when he finally got a couple of carries and he did drop that throw. I, however, think he is a much better football player than Carey Davis. Here’s hoping that he and Redman both make this team.

— Still not sold on Mendenhall. I don’t see “special” when he’s carrying the ball. I see a young player still trying to figure it out. He’s still trying to find his style. I think he needs to just play football and be physical. He’s only 22 years old, so he has time to figure this out and get better.

— Dixon made some Pro throws last night. I also liked Tyler Palko, too. Hey, if he gets cut, why not put Palko on our practice squad? If a QB goes down, we’re going to need one.

— I like the way our young OL stepped up. Legursky played well. I didn’t notice any jailbreaks up the middle when he played. Tony Hills played so well that I was shocked. He looked more athletic at LT than Max Starks did. Shipley and Foster played well. I didn’t notice Capizzi a lot, so maybe that is a good thing. And freaking Willie Colon. Yes, Bruce Arians, he sure did play like the best RT in football last night, hungh?

— I might be of the minority, but I don’t think Mike Vick going to Philly is such a great idea. Whatever Donovan might be saying, he is still thin-skinned and you have put another distraction upon him. The Philly media goes for the jugular and the whole fanbase is really fickle and can turn on you quickly. A move like this also kind of tells me that Andy Reid probably isn’t thinking about the long-term in Philly. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last year. Just have the feeling that he isn’t in it for the long haul.

Damn, steeler.lifer, you are always on point

Great that you noticed some of the same things I did. I will probably rewatch the game this weekend to see if there were some other things that escaped me the first time (yes, I’m sick like that).

I like the fact that Tomlin had both Tank and Redman carrying the ball as well as blocking. Carey Davis, that hot feeling in the seat of your pants isn’t because of a case of hemorrhoids. I think the rookies are putting some legitimate heat on his aarrsss.

Every night at the club the girls screamed when he'd come
He stood six foot five and weighed 241
Kinda meaty in the face with a head full of stone
And everybody knew you didn't go to the bathroom alone around Big Ben
