The Perfect Storm - Black and Gold Edition?
No reason for me to write this other than to get it off my chest, sorry.
I can't help but like our chances this season. Call it the Perfect Storm:
1. Defense is still nasty, arguably nastier with the likes of Lawrence Timmons (LT, anyone?) at starter. D alone can carry us through games and the whole season.
2. Special teams are getting a boost with the return of Mr. Robo-Punter and potentially thrilling return men replacing Gary "Damn-the-Blockers-Straight-at-'em" Russel
3. Offensive firepower that will probably surpass last years', in the form of a couple nice options at receiver and our returning corps of running backs PLUS a healthy Parker and Mendenhall (not to mention some promising rooks).
On the surface, all this looks great for the Steelers, but I can't help wondering what could go wrong. I think the only thing that blows it for them right now is the worst opponent of any football team: injury. Seriously, with a roster like we've got, and a schedule like we've got, how can people not be thinking #1 seed?? That being said, if Troy or Aaron Smith or Deebo . . . or Sepulveda (he's got a bad knee!) or Ben or Santonio goes down . . . see where I'm going? I don't know that we have the depth to carry us over multiple injuries, and injuries are always looming.
If the injury bug doesn't bite us though, I think it's a lock that we're on the way to seventh heaven. The NFL won't know what hit 'em!

Definitely could be another special year
But as it has been said again and again, it is so hard to repeat in this league. I say if we stay healthy, and get big years from Mendenhall and Sweed ,we’ll be well on our way.

I know you aren't talking
when you have Bert at QB and Gary Gnu at free safety

No cause he has sex with guys. Dahmer raped a man, then chopped his body up. Pretty cool.

um
actualy, Dahmer chopped the penises off his victims, and ate them as well as the quadracep, gluteus maximus, and biceps of his victims. Plus, he was a man-whore.
He also used to masturbate to the original Hellraiser movie.
I’m pretty sure you got your information from that shitty movie named after him. Which was historicaly inaccurate, btw, but only in the case of ‘cinematic art’. They left almost all of the most gruesome stuff of his story out.
Thank you drive through...

I'm back!
This is a bit off topic, but I’m vacationing in San Mateo, California (20 minutes south of San Fran) this upcoming week (I leave Friday, driving) and was wondering if any of my fellow Steeler Nation lived down there and could recommend a Steeler bar I could go and have a few brews and watch the game this Saturday.
Any help would be teh hawtness.
Thank you drive through...

the U word
I usually pretty good about containing my optimism, but i think this is the best Steeler team probably since 1978. The only weakness I see is the O-line, and that didn’t seem to matter last year. As mentioned above, Timmons, Gay, and Sepulveda are improvements over Foote, McFadden, and Berger. In Timmons and Sepulveda’s cases, big improvements. I look at the rest of the AFC and the NFL in general, and I honestly cannot see a better team. The only team I think that has a shot is New England, who seem to own us. Mr. Malory will disagree, but I think the Ravens are worse than last year. I almost hate to say it because it may jinx the team, but if the Steelers can keep their heads on straight, 19-0, is a real possibility.

You best have crossed yourself when you wrote that.
then knocked on wood, stole the foot off a rabbit, tossed some salt over your shoulder, etc etc etc. Horrid horrid hexing comes from a prediction like that.

16-0 would suck
we don’t need some dream season here. We don’t do that. We win hard and tough when others count us out. We don’t roll pretty through the schedule and run up scores.
You keep that throttle down all season, at some point you are going to run out of juice.

the line didn't seem to matter last year...
except, say, in that philly game – all it takes is one big hit on #7 and all of a sudden that line sure seems to matter… I don’t think they’re as bad as some of the doomsdayers around here seem to think, but they sure aren’t all that and a bag of chips, either. Hopefully a healthy FWP + Mendy + (Summers,Redman??) will provide a more balanced attack and some nice play action…

You double jinxed us..........................
……..first by saying “19-0, is a real possibility” and secondly by saying “I almost hate to say it because it might jinx the team”. Are you a witch doctor or something working for some other team? How many Steelers dolls do you have to stick pins into?
We are now doomed.

Sorry
to upset you all, but I don’t think any Steelers read these posts. I agree, I’d rather see another super bowl victory rather than an undefeated season. I simply posted what I think a lot of us are thinking. Can you look at our schedule and see more than one or two tough games? I’ve seen some predictions for 15-1 on this site, and I think they’re just afraid to say 16-0. I’m not predicting a 16-0 season. I’m not even saying I want that, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened.

just kidding dude..................
I like it better when we fly under the radar though, rather than being picked as 1 or 2 in the preseason

I think we'll be better...
…but I think a whole host of other teams are going to be a lot better than last year too.
The Patriots and Giants will be back, I expect some improvement from the Colts as well. Aaron Rodger’s Packers could be formidable and Favre could be the final piece of the puzzle in Minnesota. Add to that teams I figure to continue their rise from last year, Miami, Atlanta, Houston. 2009 is going to be a lot tougher to win it all than 2008. Let’s face it we got some breaks last year. We had a diamond tough schedule but some of our biggest potential rivals imploded. The Pats in week 1, the Giants down the stretch and Tennessee against the Ravens, I always felt we were a lot better suited to beating the Ravens than the Titans. Also to land Arizona in the big game ahead of more balanced teams was a godsend.
We may be better in almost every department this year but IMO we need to be to compete.
by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 18, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
But our sked this year is so much easier
No team is going to beat us on skill this year. Maybe better play-calling, maybe some luck . . . but we’ve got the talent and the know-how and the moxie to meet every single challenge a team can throw at us. Like I said, with all our upgrades, the only way we suffer this year is through injuries.
Maybe I might be overlooking some other intangibles too though, now I think about it: too much swagger after the Super Bowl win? Maybe assuming that they are just so damn good that no one will touch them which might equal a half-assed effort every now and then. Maybe just really bad coaching from Arians. Maybe a lot of bad luck in some form or another. I guess all those uncontrollables that are out of their hands could of course bite them in the ass. But all the stuff they have control over makes them the #1 team in the league.
BTW, my family and I are moving to Te Puke in May 2010 . . . where do you live in NZ?

Not that only will we go undefeated, but our defense will go unscored upon, and BB will throw 51 TDs this year. We will be so dominant Goodell will mandate we play defense with only ten players, and Deebo will line up with one arm tied behind his back!
Why do teams even play us? Our awesomeness should be enough to induce forfiets starting week 5.
13 years and no playoff wins for the Dallas Cowboys... SWEET!

It all depends on Ben's health...
So let’s keep David Johnson, dang it! He seems to be a blocker extraordinaire in the making. Forget the Davis vs Summers debate. We should keep Johnson ahead of either of them. He could become the complete blocking package, plus he can somewhat catch and he’s pretty fast.
Or not. What do I know? He just seems to have more potential than McHugh for the role. I guess I’d be happy seeing him on the P.S.
Who knew?
