BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- Tuesday Afternoon Edition
IX-It looks like the coaches aren't the only one's who are noticing Isaac Redman this week. During one of Redman's five touchdowns on Sunday he spiked the ball after a scamper that players like Troy Polamalu, James Harrison and Ryan Clark found to be a little disrespectful. Ryan Clark talked with the Tribune Democrat about Redman and said while he is somewhat impressed he also realizes that Redman has a long, long way to go. For some additional information on Redman, check out this list of his accolades for the undrafted free agent from Bowie St.
X-I thought we liked to have a good time making fun of Jeff Reed here at BTSC, but it sounds like it was nothing compared to what the Rookies did when they put on their annual rookie show for the coaches and players. According to the report the players made fun of the Jeff Reed Sheetz incident. In other news from camp evidently Jeff Reed thought it would be better to get even with a second year guy rather than the first year group that made fun of him earlier in the day. Reed found a frog and put it in the helmet of Limas Sweed, and the Steelers found out that Sweed isn't just afraid to make big catches, but he is also afraid of toads.
XIII-Be sure to tune into ABC this evening at 9 o'clock eastern time to watch the new reality show with Shaquille O'Neal where he takes on athletes from other sports at their own game. The premier episode stars Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who takes on Shaq running a pro-style offense. I can't see how this is going to work out for Shaq. Video after the jump or you can check out some sneak previews at PSAMP.
XIV-NFL preseason football usually signifies one thing to me and one thing only. Start getting yourself together in terms of fantasy football. I am involved in at least 5 leagues as of right now and I have paid little to no attention to fantasy football since I got completely robbed in my final game of my fantasy season in at least two leagues. It was like training a brand new puppy for 14 weeks only to have your neighbor who barley snuck into the playoffs run him over with a Mack Truck. Anyways here is a six-pack of rules to increase your fantasy football success this season.
XL-Rookie Speedster Mike Wallace went through a grueling workout regiment to get his rookie rating for the recent release of NFL Madden 2010. Check out the video below to find out what how he earned an 88 in agility.
XLIII-Thanks to NYSteelersFan4 for linking to this in the fanshots and in the essence of giving it a little extra notice I am re-posting it here. The ESPN ombudsman posted his reaction and views on how ESPN. handled the non reporting of the Ben Roethlisberger case by ESPN. (If you're not sure what an ombudsman is feel free to check it out at wikipedia.)

No can do
The claim of Ray Lewis murdering 2 people has decreased drastically over the last 10 years, yet I still receive BS from Steeler Nation on the situation. Not saying you in particular, but that subject has never died off.
I continue and will continue to bring up the rape allegations as more of a joke towards Ben, because I do feel that it is some BS. I mean it in good fun. How can you not like the name “Raperburger”?

Got a point about the murdering thing. Thats the only comment I’ll make about Ray Ray for fear of starting more arguments.
However, you are on a Steelers message board……so………….thats kind of inappropriate. We do that on the beatdown and I wouldn’t be surprised if a ban occurs. Now, you won’t get banned from here because you’re our residential ‘hater,’ and you’ve been here for awhile. but still, I wouldn’t go overboard with the whole rape thing.
All that being said though, hell, even I make similar jokes. i can’t tell you how many times I’m going to say “Ben raped that defense” this season. Its all in good fun so long as he is innocent, which we know he is.

You wouldn’t get banned unless you took it absolutely too far. We get guys outside of Steeler fans over there all the time who have a Ray is a murderer comment for us. Its not like I am going to go all out and have a huge debate about Ben and his situation, but I will throw it out there every once in a while just to give you all a hard time on a situation that, yes, is most likely false.

I would think everyone would say that outside of being a Terp fan. One of the most successful coaches of all time coach K is.
But Gary is also a very, very successful coach who turned our program around very nicely. Wanna know one cool stat though about Gary?
Of all the active NCAA division 1 coaches, no one has more wins against number 1 ranked teams than Gary Williams does. Pretty cool huh?

That is cool, but...
also consider that, playing in the ACC, Maryland has more opportunities than most to play against the #1 team (considering it is usually not them and is often Duke or NC). I’d be more impressed if he had the highest winning percentage against #1 ranked teams of all active division 1 coaches with 5 or more opportunities. And maybe he does.

alot of us are glad he's gone
it sucks he took probably the best recruiting class ever with him, but it was worth it to get rid of him….besides Memphis is loaded this year and especially next, so it’ll be okay….Josh Pastner is the new coach, and he has the city more fired up than it’s ever been right now….the program’s fanbase is massive (almost like Ohio State or UCLA even) because there isn’t any competition closer than Mizzou (Memphis basketball is bigger than College Football out here), and they travel well and spend a ton of money….the good times will keep rolling
thanks for asking….your program is awesome too….I can’t wait until the Tigers win a national title….that Juan Dixon team was incredible

This probably won't get read
But you are wrong Malor. Lefty Driesell turned the Maryland program around. Gary just stepped in when Lefty got fired for trying to cover up Len Bias’ mistake (he wanted to protect that he WAS a good kid who made a mistake).
Gary Williams has been a terrible coach. I have said it before, and I will say it again he did not win that national championship. Juan Dixon did. And no Gary did not recruit him, because he never does the recruiting and that’s why we fail to get 5-star recruits and failed to have a good team after the championship team.
The only good season Gary had was last year. Where he actually did some coaching and reorganized his offensive and defensive schemes to fit the small-bodied team.

by Mr MaLoR on Aug 20, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Roy Williams CONSISTENTLY puts together a good team. And consistently has the talent to be a contender. Maryland had that 2 years (in Gary’s tenure when Dixon was there).
After the championship you are supposed to have a tremendous recruitment for the next year. What did we get? John Gilchrist? Nik Caner-Medley? Travis Garrison? Chris McCray? Not the best talent that was out there those years.
Gary Williams constantly runs the same offense, the flex offense. Even when his team was not fit to run it. The other teams in the ACC or any team scouting you can easily defend what they see coming. It worked when Dixon was there, only because Dixon was that good.
Yes Gary has had a great record at MD, but so would any coach who knows basketball. Maryland is a top level basketball school and players WANT to come there. But when your coach refuses to meet with potential recruits they lose interest. Did you know that the Terps’ women’s team spends considerably more money on recruiting than the men’s? Did you know the Terps’ men’s team ranks near the bottom in top level basketball schools for how much they spend on recruiting? Its fucking pathetic.

I follow MD basketball for longer than the Steelers. I know my stuff. Everyone who thinks Gary is a good coach is just had the “Garyland” sweater pulled over their eyes to hide them from the truth.
Generally, anyone who supports Gary has no proof to back up this claim except “he won a lot of games.” So what? He gets talent just because he plays in the ACC. The thing is the talent he is getting should be MUCH better than what we get because he fails to recruit. Maryland should be top 3 in the ACC every year, and we are not. It’s horrible.
by Johnny_S on Aug 21, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Listen
Gary is a great coach, one of the best ones in bball right now. But, he is a pretty bad recruiter. There is a great difference. On the court, there are few that can do what he does to get his players to play as well as they do sometimes. I mean come on, look at that team last season, Dave Neal starting and had 4 gaurds under 6’6" in the game more than 20 mins.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
by Mr MaLoR on Aug 21, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I told you the sole exception of Gary being a bad coach was last year. That is because he FINALLY changed the offense to fit the skill/players he had on the court. He adjusted his patent “flex” offense. That is why we were able to compete against UNC. We were small, so he made us a fast, full court team. He was excellent last year.
All the years before that when his team could NOT play the flex offense we failed. Look at the 2003 and 2004 teams. Two good teams on paper who were terribly coached and did not do as much as they should have.
You’re only argument so far is “He is a great coach”. How?
by Johnny_S on Aug 21, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hit on court actions are some of the best out there. He demands 40 minutes of basketball from his player regardless of the score. As much of an asshole as people thinks he looks screaming at players and coaches all throughout the game, the players buy into his intensity. Like you said, last year was a brilliant year for him.
All the BS stuff he went through with the Ath. Department and he still brought us farther than we ever expected. The man knows how to win games, which is why he has 2 final four appearances and a national championship. His recruiting strategies have not changed even before those years with Juan and Lonny Baxter.
I will admit, that he does need to step it up, because he is indeed still trying to get lucky with local guys like Juan and Lonny Baxter were. He needed to get those 2 guys we lost. He should have done more to get Lance Stephenson. But I think that with Grevis coming back next year and these players having one of the most matured looking seasons I have ever seen, they can be a top 25 team. We may not be UNC or Duke, but Gary DEFINITELY knows how to compete and I think you are not giving him a chance to come out of a situation that has not even been his worst since coming to Maryland.
Now can you tell me why is a bad coach? If recruiting is your reason, you are wrong. There is a big time difference between how good you are recruiting and how good you are coaching. Recruiter, yes Gary is below average, but coaching, I think one of the best in college basketball.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
by Mr MaLoR on Aug 22, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I stated a dozen times already his obsession with his flex offense even we do not have the players capable of successful running it.
Additionally, he refuses to (until last year) believe in the 3 pointer, even when we had Mike Jones (the top 3point shooter his senior year in HS). Coaches like Coach K and Roy Williams realize its value and utilize it much more than Gary does.
His persistence to play terrible players, even though people can clearly see they suck. Examples include Mike Mardesuck and Will Bowers. Along with this one, he insists putting in players based on seniority and not skill. If we are going to suck this year, at least develop the younger, better talent for next year.
by Johnny_S on Aug 22, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Listen, I am right there with you. I understand everything you say, especially the seniority thing. I will definitely agree on that. In all honesty, I think a huge reason Gary recruits they way he does is because he enjoys building something with the players he brings in.
Look at it this way. Since Gary is such a local recruiting player, always plucking players from the Baltimore system (Gregory, Mosley, Dupree)
and the Silver Spring area (Grevis, Bowie) why can’t we get the big time guys that come through here.
I mean, Keving Durant, Rudy Gay, Michael Beasley, Ty Lawson, and there are so many others that come from the Baltimore-Washington area, but he does not get them. This is because he enjoys having a guy for 3-4 years and building something with them like he did in 2002. I do not think Gary wants to have a guy play 1 year at college not by choice. If those guys could, they would go right to the NBA from highschool.
I mean, why should some hot shot freshman come in there and run the show? This aint high school ball anymore, and Gary understands that. I do not blame him, because he does know how to bring the best out of every player he has (accept Braxton Dupree) but bringing in those guys could only help out program. It could definitely help say if Durant or Beasley chose MD, then after they leave and tear it up, more players will come. I mean, this is the ACC, the BEST conference in NCAA bball. High caliber players could definitely do some damage in this league, and tearing it up here is a big time accomplishment.
Lets just see what we can do next year, I think we will still be alright with a more mature team. We lost some serious power the year before last with Osby and Gist leaving. I would have loved to get Lance Stephenson though.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Personally...
You could easily not like the name “Raperburger” if a) you had been raped b) knew someone who had been raped or C) just thought it was plain offensive in any type of light you shine on it.
If I had my way, I would censor that type of talk from BTSC.
As for Ray Rays “drastically decreasing” claim of murdering two people…the claim hasn’t decreased, the attention given to it has decreased, like any other crime as time passes it by. You should know that’s the main reason, Mr. Malor, not the actual legitimacy of the claim itself.
Just my two pesos, amigo.

So it would be correct to say: “involved in a double homicide”?
The real problem I have with Lewis is that he tries to put forth this religious image in every special I see on him…yet his previous actions cast such a shadow over all of it.
by HoustonPA on Aug 19, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know everyone makes mistakes and gets in bad situations…though Lewis’s is particularly egregious. My point is that when you have such a stain put on you, the noble thing to do is shut up, keep your head down, and live the rest of your life. Don’t try and act like it never happened.
IMO, the only exception to this when you make amends for what you did…which, to my knowledge, he has not tried to do. Like when you get away with murder, tell the public that you are going to search for the real killers.
by HoustonPA on Aug 19, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And the same goes for Ben. IMO, if this lawsuit is dropped (or he is found not guilty), he should not be out carousing and putting himself in the same positions that made this lawsuit possible. If he does, then he is just as bad as Lewis.

I was under the impression that more happened than just TV repair. The way I understand it, Big Ben got his antenna adjusted.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Ben should be able to have fun and do whatever he wants. I don’t mean to say he can’t ever go out or drink or get with women. But, as I have said before, he could avoid these problems by getting to know whether someone is crazy before sleeping with them. I don’t think that is too much to ask.

I know what you mean and I don’t necessarily disagree. A little more maturity won’t hurt Ben but eh, no big deal to me. A lot of his sandlot plays that save the Steelers bacon are becaue of immaturity (aka youthful exuberance) at the quarterback position. I don’t analyze Ben too much about off the field stuff. So easy to be judgmental without knowing many if any of the facts. As long as he’s bringing his A game to the field I really don’t care how often his antenna gets adjusted.

But I think we should all agree Murder isn’t either.
I would support leaving all the criminal stuff out of football talks, seriously throw out some your mom jokes or something.
If we want to talk seriously about the culture of professional sports and criminal conduct, then let’s do it, but when talking sports, this stuff is basically trolling, and while often meant in good fun, it is tasteless and not funny.

"I know it’s too early, but Dare I Say it? Mike Wallace being a better player than DHB over in Oakland???"
I would say yes, but also take into consideration the organization each of these guys plays for.
If we had drafted Heyward-Bey, Wexell’d be twitterpating about the reverse and the screen DHB got from the Steelers QB.
Sadly, regardless of the weapon, used in incompetent hands they’ll never be used to their full potential. (Maybe do something of note once in a while, but productive and living up to their potential? Nope. )

All this talk about Carey Davis being a lock for the 53-man roster is ...
very depressing to me. Wex and G. Dulac have both said they expect Davis to make this team. I hope the kids (Redman & Tank) show what they can do during the next three preseason games, though there has been some talk that Tank is having a difficult time learning the offense. C. Davis just isn’t an impact football player to me, at all.
Anyone agree?
by datruth4life on Aug 18, 2009 6:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
DT4L - I'm still reserving judgement
I think a key factor is going to be which one (Redman or Summers) they think can be stashed on the PS without bolting for another offer. I believe this coaching staff will want to keep the veteran ST leadership that I feel C. Davis brings to the table. I know you disagree, but the locker room and on field leadership he shows are VERY hard for a rookie to replace.
That said, I’m highly interested to see how the S b/up picture evolves. I share a similiar visceral disgust that you have for C. Davis about T. Carter.
(Of course, if I knew anything about football, my work week would go from Tuesday thru Sunday instead of Monday to Friday, so there you go…)

Tank goes to the PS
Redman has recieved too much press to hide anywhere now. He makes the team, Davis stays, and Tank spends a season on the practice squad.

We can’t hide Redman now, he’s making it hard to stash him. The league knows.
I think, just based on experience alone though, Davis stays.
That’s the ONLY reason, though, because in my mind Tank is right there with him, and that being said, has done so with limited playbook comprehension and experience. Tank has upside Davis does not, though.

Right
We’ll find a way to keept hese guys, just because Tank was given a draft pick, and Redman will get scooped up if we dont use him.
Noah Herron had a great preseason outing for us one time, and he went over to the Packers and had a few good games. We gotta try to lock these guys up ourselves. Course we have such RB depth we can only keep so many.

Carey Davis
He’s not much of an offensive player, but remember that awesome blocking on Tone’s punt return for a touchdown in the playoffs? That was just a sample, the guy is a special teams beast and we need those. Special teams are important and fans often forget about the guys that make ‘em work. Davis is one of those guys and unless Summers or Redman prove they can do as good a job as he does, they’ll be fighting among themselves for a spot…
by Steelfrog on Aug 19, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think we need just a sample from someone whose only real claim to fame is supposed to be ST
With how much special teams was out there last season, he only picked up (I’m trusting datruth for this one) 6 ST tackles? Highlight hits don’t mean much. Consistently being in the right spot is where it’s at. That can be coached into the rookies. For how much he means to the offense (very little), he should be absolutely lighting it up on special teams and that’s not what we saw. And since there’s no real signs of significant improvement coming in the future, I’d say it would be in our best interest to replace him with a goal line back that actually has an upside.

You can be a beast on ST and not ever record tackles. People bust up wedges and take out blockers just like the D-line clears the way for Deebo and Woodley.
Well at least for Woodley, I don’t think anyone leaves Harrison one on one no matter what now.

Okay, okay....Ray Lewis is not a murderer
Lewis murder charges dropped
Ravens star accepts misdemeanor charge, will testify
Posted: Monday June 05, 2000 09:31 PM
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) — A judge Monday approved a deal allowing Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis to avoid murder charges and jail time by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and testifying against two co-defendants.
Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and Superior Court Judge Alice D. Bonner sentenced Lewis to 12 months’ probation, the maximum sentence for a first-time offender. Under the terms of the sentence, Lewis can not use drugs or alcohol during the duration of the probation.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard refused to say how the plea agreement was brokered but said his office made the right decision to prosecute Lewis.
“A trial is an instrument to reach the truth, and I think that in many respects it has been shielded,” Howard said. “We are continuing to try to bring the truth forward.”
The prosecution waived any further charges against Lewis.
“It’s a good day for Ray,” defense attorney Don Samuel said he entered the courthouse for the day’s court session.

I wouldn't say ripped him
Ben had to make a pretty solid comeback to win in Horse, including a clutch shot from on top of a rock to stay alive with the game on the line. And then Shaq only lost 3-2 in the football part. I keep forgetting how huge his hands are it looked like he was tossing a nerf football.
by barnerburner on Aug 19, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shaq lost 3-2 with the defense spotting him the first touchdown. Both of his WRs ran a crossing in at the very back of the end zone, and there was not a defender in the EZ at all.
It was a game for TV, not a sporting event, and they gave him that one to make it look close.

I have my doubts that Ben’s team was in on some conspiracy to make it look closer. Ben’s competitive enough that I doubt he’d spot a TD to anyone that already had a 20 yard handicap for each drive, and I’ll give Shaq enough credit to have the stones to want to prove what he can actually do instead of relying on people to fudge things to look closer.
All of those guys sucked at defense let’s be reasonable now. Ben’s first TD was to his RB who walked right in with four defenders staring right into his face. Give Shaq credit for doing a much better job of throwing a football than any of us expected him to. His second TD took guts to throw.

I have never played a football video game except Blitz, but I have also never been more of a fan, and I’m out of work, so I decided to get Madden 10. Oh my god I played for 4 hours straight and was annoyed when a friend showed up and I had to stop. Anyone on the fence should grab it. Plus it pimps out XLIII which is always nice.
Anyway, Wallace and Mcdonald made some great plays for me in the preason. Wallace also made a great special teams tackle but got called for a facemask.
Losing can HURT in that game. I was driving for the game winning score in Chicago and Sweed made a spectacular 40 yd catch, but then Ben was picked in the endzone to seal the loss. And the whole AFC north lost week one except for me. Crap I had a lead!

If I’m controlling anyone other than the D-line or the outside linebackers in a blitz, you can expect a big play from the offense. I sit back and let the #1 D do their work. Townsend had two picks in the Tennessee game, one ran back 70 yards for 6. 14-0 Steelers!

I Like Ike
I’m 100% in support of Ike Redman spiking that ball.
If you’re a UDFA trying to make a roster and running against the league’s #1 defense and you punch it in 5 out of 7 times…..hell yes, spike the ball.
Ike is a longshot and he needs to get noticed. He’s gaining some momentum and getting some fans behind his cause. Good for him. We need more of that attitude in our goal line offense, a little “F you, I’m taking this into the house and you can’t stop me.”
If Troy and Silverback don’t like it, then they need to stuff him and make him STFU. In the meantime I’m liking this kid more every day.

And yes, 5 out of 7 is destroying a defense, they know you aren’t going to pass, there’s no reason for a greater than 50% tally on any team, let alone this Defense.

Tank Can Play Special Teams; Can Redman? We'll find out.
For those people beating the drum of Carey Davis as this special teams beast, Tank can play special teams, too. Davis only had 6 special teams tackles this past year and picked up one first down all year. I just don’t see how he is irreplaceable.
We don’t know if Redman can play special teams, but he’ll have to show that he can to make this squad and be active on game day. I’m hoping both make it (at Carey Davis’ expense).

Hey, I'm no huge Davis fan!
But there is a lot more to special teams than kicking, returning and tackling. You don’t juge an O lineman by his receptions or TDs but they’re needed to make them happen. If you’re serious about having good STs, you have to carry a couple of guys who’ll work well in the shadows and improve your play on those units. Tank played good STs in college but the fact remains that Davis plays ’em at a high level in the NFL and even though he does suck on offense, that might be enough for him to secure his spot…
I’m just saying, not hoping! Hopefully both Tank and Redman turn out to be excellent ST players and make Pushless Davis a liability!

LS – Warren (1)
Darnell Stapleton: Placed on the PUP list to begin the season
Practice squad: Nance, Grisham, D. Johnson, A.Q. Shipley, Vincent, McClendon, P. Mundy, R. Lewis
The one player I struggled with to leave off is S\CB Roy Lewis. The way he played special teams during the first game and the hits he delivered in the secondary, coupled with the fact that he can play safety and corner does make it a tossup between he and K. Ratliff. I would like to have a young backup at safety on this team though, but what can you do?
Glad I don’t have to make these choices. That is why Tomlin is paid the big bucks.

According to Wexell, Ratliff fell down in coverage the other day, if that influences your opinion one way or the other… Said Tomlin was mighty displeased.

Also, carrying three safeties with Townsend only has a sort-of safety and the injury-proneness of that unit (and denver)? I sincerely doubt it datruth.

This list is Offense heavy.
If Redman makes the team, it won’t be at a Defensive players expense. I expect 9 OL and another safety, other than that this list looks good. Townsend will make the team at CB and FS depth, but mostly CB I would think, either Ratliff or Madison won’t be here.

You could always substitute R. Lewis for K. Ratliff but ...
I wouldn’t get too carried away with a player falling down during pass route. It happens. Wex reports, and he does a good job doing it. But he hasn’t always been right with his predictions. Let’s see how everything plays out.

Yeah, I think I'd like to add a young safety but ...
who do you cut? Tough decisions.

A young safety? I’d like to add any safety.
Madison is an easy choice. He is good at ST, but does not seem like he will ever develop into a career CB. You don’t keep guys for a decade that can only play ST, that’s only for the young blood. The other place to trim the fat is at RB. I understand the obsession with carrying 5 RBs, but I don’t think it happens. You carry either Redman/Summers at 4th RB, you have your hybrid 3rd TE/FB whether he be McHugh or Jazzy Jeff, These are both tough cuts, but you can’t go into the season with just Townsend at backup safety. Also consider that if Townsend is the backup safety, he can also be the “veteran CB”, which makes Ratliff expendable.
Cut Ratliff, keep Deshea, insert young safety/carter/whoever into backup safety. Deshea can flex to safety if need be…and that’s why we keep the slowest man on the field Tyrone. Madison is still the easier cut.
With your roster we have this as the coverage team: Kicker, Summers, Timmons, Fox, Frazier, Bailey, Woods, Gay?, Lewis, Burnett, Clark?
Madison would be nice, but he’s a luxury. Ratliff would be nice, but he’s a luxury. Summers/Redman would be nice, but they’re a luxury. No depth at safety with our crew: Not a luxury.

Keep Madison, R. Lewis for coverage
So, replace R. Lewis with Ratliff.
Your coverage units will consist of: Madison, Summers (or Redman, whoever is active that day), Woods, Frazier, Bailey, Fox, Burnett, R. Lewis, Reed, Ziggy, K. Lewis. (M. Wallace might replace one of the names so that he’d be able to run down anyone breaking in the open).

You still aren’t addressing safety depth. Townsend as the only backup safety option is incredibly foolish in my opinion. In the very recent past we had both of our backup safeties playing as starters.

Yeah, I just don’t see how Carter doesn’t make the team. He knows the D as well as any backup, and has filled in admirably, if not excellently.
