Steelers @ Redskins - Postgame thoughts and Observations Thread
Posting this thread so that we can try to collect postgame opinions in something less than 50 separate threads. My thoughts after the jump.
- Logan: looked pretty decent against Washington's 1st teamers, and looked great against their scrubs. I just don't see where he can fit on the 53, though - we're way too stacked at WR and RB, and I don't see them keeping a return specialist on the roster.
- Burnett: Two games, two fumbles - 'nuff said. Looked decent at corner though, except for the touchdown - his lack of height screwed him there.
- Hood: it was fun seeing him sack his former Mizzou team-mate Chase Daniel, who looked pretty good out there.
- Shipley: got a lot of reps, looked decent to me, but I didn't get many chances to see what he was doing - anyone keep an eye on him?
- Batch + Dixon: I think Batch will stay the #2 this season - Dixon looked pretty decent for the most part, but Batch is a know commodity.
- O'reilly: who knows, the line wouldn't give him more than half a second to do anything - Stepanovich was getting beaten like a rented mule by third teamers.
- Mendenhall: still looks timid - if he would show half the heart that Redman does, he'd be knocking 'em dead!

They gave Logan a big look, which tells me he’s in serious consideration. I thought they would look at Redman more, I’m disappointed in that. What the hell is a Justin Vincent? What the hell is he doing on my football team?

was disappointed about Redman too
I was hoping to see more of him earlier in the game – he sure shows a lot more heart than Mendenhall seems to…

he showed more heart in the first game cuz he knew he had to stand out and impress the guys. but, he needs to realize you’re never done trying to stand out. if we see more of what we saw vs Arizona, then we’ll have a top player on our hands.

seems like this game was Logan's big chance
I had heard things about him dropping punts in practice, so I didn’t expect that this was any more than a longshot. He did impress, though! Maybe he’ll take Burnett’s spot on the 53…

Burnett isn't going anywhere
He has serious potential as a cover corner. The fumbling problem is a mental thing, and he will get over it. Redman will go to the practice squad and Tank or Davis will be released.. Between Willie, Mewelde, and Rashard we will have our goalline back. As for the CB position, Kewan Raitleff is making a strong case to steal a spot. It will be interesting to see which corners don’t make the team but the rookies will definitley stay. K. Lewis is physical and a great tackler, his cover skills need to improve. J. Burnett is the polar opposite great cover skills, not to physical. Most DBs in the NFL would have had difficulty defending that TD. Ball was on the money and the WR caught the ball at the APEX of his leap.

I would release Burnett if..
If he cannot consolidate himself as a good returner, I would release him, honestly. I mean, he is too small to be a regular CB anyway, and just for DIme/Nickel we have plenty of options so why do we need him for? WOuld u release Ratliff after a superb pre season over Burnett’s arguably potential? NO WAY!
ps.: Tonight I had a dream, to never see Justin Vincent again! Hey Justin, relax, its not that u made awfull mistakes yesterday, its just that this is what? ur 3 preseason with us? And ur best run was what? 9 yards?? Go home!

they said the same about William Gay
and whilst he is a little bigger, I never thought Gay would be a starter for us. I won’t rule out Burnett. He has a real nose for the ball. I don’t think he could ever start but I do think he may be worth hanging onto over someone like Mundy. Though it would mean getting one of our DBs to backup a safety spot. Burnett has nickelback potential in this league. But he’s obviously not there yet.

Vincent
Is he a reciever or a RB?
He seemed to line up at WR a lot. We have enough of both. He seems to have good hands for a back, and is stalky as hell for a WR.

Broken record… based on our awful O-line, we need a guy in the return game with the capability of altering field position like we saw tonight. Like last year, i’m afraid we will have a substandard running game. We are going to need all the big plays we can get.

we carried rossum in 2007 without getting much for the roster spot – have to think that weighs in their minds a little. Still, I bet we’ll at least see Logan get another chance next week, and go from there…

You can take 2 spots for just ST or a Redman type player. The question is who takes those spots.
Redman, Logan, Burnett, those guys are fighting each other, A. Madison could be thrown into that mix also.

our ST has been sooo shitty it stands to reason they keep a specialist. Besides with the way teams rack up injuries he could soon do what mendy did last year…

I like the idea of having a return man dedicated
Personally, if this dude can keep up that level of performance, then hell we can drop just about anyone for that kind of help. We need that extra push. 10-20 yards cuts out a lot of BS, gets you closer to at least 3 (if reed hits them) and the worlds a much better place.
BTW I know it was rainy but come on skippy thats like your designated weather.

seems like he makes the tough catches, and drops the wide open ones – I think he’s still over-thinking, when he has to just go on instinct he seems to be fine.

he’s there at crunch time, but you’re right, i think he gets nervous and overthinks things. when there’s no time for thinking, his instincts come out and we see what he’s capable of. he’s too nervous about making 3rd WR. once he learns to relax, then perhaps we’ll see more open catches….

I'm wondering
Is the problem with the O-Line a lack of talent or an over complicated offensive scheme, or poor coaching. It seems that no matter who we put in there they don’t do very well.
Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile - Albert Einstein.
by fanofsteel on Aug 23, 2009 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well probably a combination of all three
. We’ve got no clear blocking philosophy now – we say we’re going to use a zone scheme, but we often go with man because we’ve got big lumber guys like Colon as opposed to smaller, more agile blockers (like in Denver’s undersized, but wholly impressive OL). Tomlin, Colbert, and co need to get clear on what sort OL they want to build and draft/sign accordingly. The weird hybrid approach we’ve got now obviously doesn’t work.
I don’t know about the coaching, but I’ve yet to see any improvement from the younger guys like Colon that have been in the system for a while. This may reflect on the coaching. It may not.
But clearly even if we had a firm blocking philosophy and great coaching to impliment it,the ceiling for this line is pretty low. Colon is immoble and a liability in pass pro, Kemo is lumbering and makes a lot of mental mistakes, Starks can’t handle speed rushers and gets beaten far too often by stunts, and Hartwig is on the wrong side of 30. I haven’t seen enough of Essex to get a handle on him, but so far I’m not impressed (although I’m not unimpressed either, he just doesn’t do anything particularly good or bad). It’s hard to tell about the younger guys, although i’m fairly sure that Hills needs to bulk up and get more physical if he ever hopes to be anything more than a guy that sits on the bench during gameday.
The problem with getting more talent is that you always end up paying a premium, either to trade up for an elite tackle or guard prospect in the draft or in FA – both things that go against the grain of the Steelers way. So, instead we keep looking for diamonds in the rough (Urbik, Hills, Shipley, Essex, Foster, Stapleton etc) that can be developed into a good OL. This may pay dividends someday, but right now we can’t run consistently and our QB’s are just getting killed.

Look at our line, the highest draft pick starting, is I believe a third rounder. Every other position save, kicking, has higher level talent. First round talent. If you are getting guys off the scrap heap, and expecting them to excel, good luck. It happens once in awhile, but once in awhile is rare. It’s been six or seven years since we’ve had a day one draft pick for our offensive line. That’s too long

Fan, he gets grief because he has about 6 catches in his career and 2 long wide open TD’s dropped in HUGE post season games. Ward is HUGE. IMO no comparison.
Really hope Sweed is the player many on this board think him to be. For right now I trust McDonald to make the catch way more than 14.

Did anyone notice...
That Bruce Davis played at DE for his whole stint? He couldn’t do a thing with the LT or TE, whoever it was. Was that a test, or was he just being given a chance to get some experience? If it was a test, he didn’t do so well. If it was for experience, well maybe he had one of those…
Also, David Johnson is a bad man when he is tackling. In fact, he’s just tough generally. Still want to see him stick, just because he can take on DEs, or LBs and make them look weak. Also, I can’t wait to see what he does to DBs if he manages to get out there with the ball. Now that would just be fun to watch…

He looked great as a lead blocker, and in a goal line set he’s practically a Tackle. Special teams could put this kid in McHugh’s spot this year or next.

Effort
I give him an A+ for effort last nigt. He may be a log shot but I think he can make it. The play where he ran down the returner was amazing when you consider the speed required to do that. He was smacking guys around on blocks and making special teams plays, I want to see this guy in action with the ball.

S. Logan as KR/PR saves roster spot; Time for the Turk to come
Guys, some quick thoughts:
- Stefan Logan could very well have made this team as the KR/PR last night. Smoking Joe may very well have gotten a place on the pracitce squad tonight. The kid has put 2 out of 3 punts on the ground. Tomlin can’t trust him at this point. S. Logan saves you a roster spot if he can be your KR/PR and cover kicks. He has to prove he can cover kicks, but the guy is hungry and looks like a football player to me. Smoking Joe, you can get better on the practice squad.
- Arians never tried to run the ball tonight. The OL looked pretty bad. However, you got to give props to D. Legursky, who started at LG in the place of Chris K. He did a pretty good job on Haynesworth because I didn’t even know he was on the field in the first quarter. He’ll make this team and is definitely more stout at the line of scrimmage than D. Stapleton. I saw him locked up on Haynesworth during one pass rush and he didn’t give an inch. This dude is pretty strong, too.
- Ziggy had a good game, showed a lot of explosion and speed; R. Harris did a couple of good things but he wasn’t as noticeable as he was this past week. Still saw him pushing the pocket a few times. I’d keep him over Nick Eason.
- Let’s hope Dixon isn’t seriously hurt. At least we found out that Mike Reilly can take a hit. Now whether he can play QB is another issue.
- If Sweed catches 2 out of every 3 passes, but Mike Wallace catches everything that is thrown to him and is the fastest person on the field, how soon before Wallace is pressing for that no. 3 role? Not long. Steeler fans, Mike Wallace is a football player who is not afraid of the bright lights. All he does is get open and catch the ball. Now, can any of our QBs consistently get him the ball when he’s open?
- Keyaron Fox and Donovan Woods are ready for the regular season. Lawrence Timmons needs to get ready. I saw him run around a couple of blocks tonight. Lebeau won’t stand for that.
- The top 6 CBs on this team are Ike, Gay, Townsend, Ratliff, Lewis and Madison (purely as the no. 1 gunner on special teams). If S. Logan does make this team, then you are probably keeping only 3 safeties, and has R. Lewis or Mundy done enough to beat out Tyrone Carter? Up to this point, that might be doubtful.
- This is the type of game that has to have Tomlin fuming. Too many penalties, the other team controlled the line of scrimmage, the team didn’t even try to run the ball, Reed missed 2 field goals and coverage teams had a couple of great individual plans but weren’t consistent. I think Arians wanted to see if T. Hills could be that swing tackle on game day. The resounding answer to that experiment was no. Jason Capizzi is the swing tackle with D. Legursky the 7th active lineman on game day who will swing between C/G.
- This game made it easy for the Turk to start doing his thing. Some players did a good job of cutting themselves (Bruce Davis) and one went a long way to earning a roster spot (Stefan Logan). For those who say there isn’t a roster spot for S. Logan, who are you kidding? The Steelers haven’t had a threat like that in years and, until this OL plays better, this team will have to play the field position game. Logan stays. Who agrees?
by datruth4life on Aug 23, 2009 9:21 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Logan has earned a greater look, not a roster spot. They’ll give him more time to earn or lose his spot.
Logan will spell the doom of either some ST specialists or Redman. Redman was 2 runs for 3 yards last night, so not the most impressive. They know his strength, picking up a few yards every time, and getting in the end zone. I think he needs to beat out guys like Logan and Madison to make the team.
Carey Davis had a good game last night. Yeah. Aren’t we all thrilled. Capizzi Legursky Foster are a good run blocking half line. I think they all make the team if they keep it up.
by Phantaskippy on Aug 23, 2009 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree...
I think. I didn’t get to see the game but I listened to it on the net..so I can’t speak directly to individual performances, however, I agree with your assessment of Logan making the team. This is an area we have been very weak in over the past several years. If last nights performance is any indicator we now have a game changer on special; teams. It only stands to reason, based on keeping Rossum around for no apparent reason, that we would keep a guy that is actually a threat to score.

Mine
Batch, looked decent, still let a couple of passes go a little to high. Dixon was ok, nothing spectacular either way. Had a nice run but needs to tuck the ball away when he does take off. Hoping he’s ok with his injury. Reilly was put into a high pressure situation and got 0 help from his offensive line.
Parker when he ran looked good. He was able to get to the edge quickly and ran well overall. Mendenhall had a couple of nice runs. Still lacks the explosiveness we’ve all wanted to see, but he is holding the ball better. I don’t understand the love fest the Steelers have with Justin Vincent. The guy really has done nothing. Maybe their just giving him one last shot at the roster. Redman might have seen the field a handful of times and Summers was out with injury.
Ward, Holmes looked good. Ward made that spectacular grab, and Holmes just missed reenacting the Immaculate Reception. Sweed had a real ugly drop and a couple of nice grabs, but what I’d like to point out is his blocking on our only TD of the night, down near the goal line was spectacular. He had shifted in motion before the play was called and then just drove #93 on the Redskins Defensive line backwards a couple yards into the end zone, which really helped set the edge for FWP to sail into the end zone. Also on that play Carey Davis and Willie Colon did great jobs picking up their assignments; go figure. Mike Wallace looked good as usual, and McDonald got a couple of looks, and didn’t make many mistakes.
Defensively, Keyaron Fox stood out as he got some reps with the starters and made that big stop down by the goal line. Timmons again seemed a little overly aggressive. Backups need to work on their tackling skills, but that’s why their backups. Ziggy got another great sack, but did not get Ziggy with it afterwards. Ratliff may have jumped in front of Joe Burnett with his pick last night, and Burnett might have earned his place on the PS. It was just one of those nights for Burnett, who was beat on a handful of occasions, the most prominent of those incidents being the Mitchell TD, and then pretty much cost us the game with the botched punt return.
On Special Teams, Logan looked like our potential return man come September 10th, and was one broken tackle away from a TD more than once. Sepulveda was a stud again, and 2 (only 1 counted) rare Jeff Reed misses, were probably karma for the training camp pranks he’s been pulling.
Looking away from our own team now, the refs, the broadcast, and the announcer aside Joe Theisman were all jokes.

WRs and Ziggy
Right now there’s an interesting decision to be made about the receiver rotation. Hines and Santonio are the starters, obviously, and McDonald and Wallace work very well out of the slot. So when we go to the 4-wide package, we can do one of two things: bump Hines inside and play Sweed at WR or keep Hines and Tone outside and bring in McDonald and Wallace. Sweed did have some good moments last night and he continues to improve, but I agree with Truth: Wallace is more game-ready right now. So I suspect we’ll see a lot of him and McDonald in the slot and Sweed on the field (initially) in very specific situations: goal-line being one of them, and perhaps on the weak side of a Trips set when defenses roll their coverage to the strength and they can get him matched up one-on-one and see if he can make big plays. But in the regular rotation I don’t think he’s as dependable as Wallace and McDonald seem.
Also, did anyone notice Ziggy Hood’s hand placement vs. the o-lineman he beat for his sack? It was beautiful. He punched him in the breastplate with his outside hand and then used a textbook rip move to get around him. He looked like a ten-year vet doing it. No wonder Kiesel and Aaron Smith have been raving about how quickly he’s picking things up…
(p.s. — Commish, I agree with you about Tank: right now I’d take Redman over him in a heartbeat. If one has to go between Redman, Logan and Tank, I think it’s Tank)…
by cliff harris is still a punk! on Aug 23, 2009 10:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
4 WR sets I would expect Tone and Sweed outside. That’s what we do in 3 wr sets and it lets Ward run in the slot.
5 WR sets will be fun, especially as Wallace gets more comfortable through the season. It will be interesting to see how Heath does this year, I’d love to see him get the ball more, but in spread sets McDonald and Hines are the underneath options he’ll compete with. I don’t see his role increasing this season.
by Phantaskippy on Aug 23, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right about Hines in the slot
He’s great there, both blocking and receiving. But I’m still intrigued with the idea of pairing McDonald with Wallace. McDonald is crafty and knows where the holes are and Wallace will be very hard to cover with an OLB or a strong safety. Add Miller to the mix in the empty set and it seems we have lots of options with our passing game. If last night was an indicator we might throw the ball an awful lot this year. I’m OK with that as long as we can protect Ben…

Theisman announcing
the mute button on my remote impressed me the most.
Some respect to: Dwight White, who wore 78, was an original member of the Steel Curtain, and the first Steeler to score points in a Super Bowl. He scored 2 as a safety, when he sacked Fran Tarkenton of the Vikings in Super Bowl IV. White was in the hospital with pneumonia for most of the week prior to that game, lost 20 lbs, and was not expected to play. He died in 2008.

Sorry to
interject on the Steeler love on here. I just wanted to jump over and see if anyone had any comments on Orakpo. I think he’s gonne be pretty good, but truthfully, it’s been so long since we’ve had a dominant D-linemen (which is where I think he will end up), especially one we drafted, that I wanted to see if the opposition felt the same way.
And, BTW, I think if you ever listened to the local sports talk radio, you’d hear plenty of people with the same sentiments you guys have said about Theismann. He’s a blowhard who can’t stop talking about himself. Tony Korneiser had a good line once, saying that whenever Theismann opens his refrigerator, and the light comes on, he automatically goes into a 10 minute rant about all things Joe.

He’s the real deal. He looks like a natural play maker. I expect some great things from him, probably a pro-bowl player eventually. That’s just me though, liked his motor and instincts a lot.

I was so confused to see him lining up at Linebacker
I thought he’d be a good player for either end position but if he ends up in coverage against Witten because they are playing him at SAM then he’s gonna get embaraased. I really don’t get it, is that the only place he’s played in training camp or was this some type of gimmick?
by SteelerFan Ben on Aug 24, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
From what I've heard...
They want him to play a similar role as T Suggs or even Clay Matthews at USC. The “elephant” backer as USC calls it, hybrid DE/OLB, but a little more OLB. But that’s what I’ve heard, CJHutch probably knows more than I do about it. The more apt comparison is probably Demacus Ware, since Dan Snyder is so original.
by NYSteelersFan4 on Aug 24, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
the Ware comparison is what Samuels has been throwing out there. I’m not sure Rak is as athletic as Ware, though he’s a hell of a lot stronger. I think Blache (our D coordinator) let the cat out of the bag last week when he said that the guy needs to get used to stopping the NFC East running games before he’s ready to play End full time. Our defense is i about topping the run first and foremost, beginning with the line. So I think once he shows he can read and react to the run consistently, he’ll be shifted to end.
Now, all that said, I’m not saying they won’t keep him at SLB if he proves to be a stud there. You guys know more than anyone how important playmaking LB’s are, and that college DE’s can make the shift effectively. So we’ll see. But I appreciate the unbiased opinions from you guys.

In all seriousness
I think Orakpo could be one helluva player, and I would have loved to see him in the Black and Gold if it weren’t for the fact that the position of OLB is already being occupied by our own two stellar players, and the fact that Orakpo went over 20 picks ahead of our own.

50s Thoughts
LOGAN; Liked him when they picked him up months ago and talked him up earlier before Latrobe. Reminds me of Sproles. Was disappointed he sprained an ankle that put him behind the 8 ball. Last night he did not disappoint. He is your KR/PR fans. FWP, MeMo, Mendy and Logan with Tank or Redmon as the #5 RB that doesn’t dress. Other is PS. Vincent is cut. Logan can also be a 5th WR on game day as one of the 5 true WR won’t dress.
BURNETT; Agree with Truth. 2 fumbles in 2 games does not earn Coaches trust. Plus he’s short. Plays great ST but it’s not enough for the 53. He is PS bound.
SWEED; If he keeps dropping passes he will not dress on game day. Wallace and McDonald have been more consistent.
HOOD; Makes the 53 and dresses on game day. If Sonny Harris looks good in the next 2 preseason games Kirshke or Eason could get a visit from “The Turk.” Not impressed with DL when Wash drove down the field on Eason, Kirshke and Hoke.
LBs; Think they keep 9. Starters plus Frazier, Bailey, Woods, Fox and Davis. Davis is a high draft pick that has made some ST strides. With no depth at OLB I think they keep him another year and let him grow.
ARIANS; B-O-O-B. What does MT see in him? Understand it’s the vanilla preseason but jeeeez…Hey BA, “when you run the ball, good things happen!”
TY CARTER; He makes this team. He is the only guy that has played a game at S if 43 or 25 go down. He has looked as good as any of the back ups. Think they keep 9 DB’s; Ike, Gay, Troy, Clark, Carter, DeShea, Ratliff, Madison (ST stud) and Lewis (too high a pick to expose to PS) Burnett is PS.
OL; Still a weak spot. Starks did not impress. Missing Kemo. Colon did ok run blocking the couple times they ran it. Hills looked horrible. Foster could beat our Urbik. 9 OL are starters plus Stapleton, Capizzi, Hills & Foster (or Urbik)
THEISMAN; Can’t stand the drivel that comes from him. LT should sack him again. As the Long Time Steeler Fan says above “thank goodness for the mute.”

Agree with most of your points
Especially the ones on Arians and Burnett.
Sweed is the only one I’d question. I understand the frustration with the drops he’s had, but he did make a couple nice grabs, and he actually looks like a decent blocker. I’ll bring it up again and again, but did you see him on the FWP TD? Still, the more easy drops he makes, the more he’ll share time with Wallace and McDonald at the 3rd spot.

I think Urbik played Ok
I didn’t see Foster beat Urbik. They both did OK, not great.
Sweed will dress.
Burnett had one bad game, one good game and a good training camp. Is the one bad game enough to PS the guy? Wait for the next two games and we will see. I think he lost his chance for PR but not his chance at making the team as a DB.
For now Logan made a case for himself, but he has to show the same for the next two games, remember its hard to make a team only as PR/KR. He has to show he is special. What happens if he fumbles the ball against the Bills?
Timmons played terrible, thats two bad games.

My buddy (who would be one of my Coordinators when I get my HC job in the NFL) watches the line and seems to think Foster has shown more than Urbik and is more game ready. I felt Urbik would make the team because they wouldn’t want to expose him to PS. Buddy seems pretty sure it’s Foster.
Burnett had my roster made last week. I loved the INT and decided to give him benefit of the doubt on the fumble. This week his coverage gave Wash the tying TD and his punt fumble gave them the game. He looks athletic and like a playmaker. I just don’t think he is as good a DB as Ratliff is right now. He could beat out Madison (a Cowher guy) but A Mad is their leading tackler on ST. Think Ratliff, Townsend, Carter, A Mad and K Lewis get kept. Don’t think they can sneak KL onto PS.
If Logan fumbles next week (that has been the knock on him) then we give him another shot but get ready to move on. Coach knows MeMo and Holmes can PR. I think Ratliff and McDonald also have NFL return experience. We could see them in the 4th game if Logan struggles.
You’re right about Timmons. He hasn’t looked good but I bet he is ready to go against Ten.

I can't go against your buddy
I watch both of them last night. And I liked both, Foster was late on a trap and was very good the rest of the plays. Urbik was ok in every play. I think he was very good at run blocking.
I think Burnett out play Ratliff last week. Is that important? No, because I think he is competing against Madisom. Is he winning? No, but we will see.
Washington had one of the worst special teams units last year, According to Theisman (I know no the best source) and some of Logan returns was against third units. He is good but I have to see some consistency against varsity competition.
I hope you are correct with Timmons; he really has to improve his run defense.

On Arians
said this in another thread, but I don’t think we can necessarily take the run/pass mix in a pre-season game as indicative of what they plan to do come September. Honestly, the run blocking has looked pretty good so far, FWP looks, well, fast, MM is a known quantity, and Mendenhall is getting some carries. I honestly think they are still trying to evaluate Batch, Dixon and the suddenly deep crop of wideouts.

QB - Batch looked like Ben on one play when he shook off Orakpo and kept the play alive. Dixon is showing that he can make some plays (both with his arm and on foot). Would be interesting to see if they are considering any Wildcat plays for him. Wonder how serious the injury is though? Hope it’s minor because I was expecting more from Reilly. Right now, he seems to be less of a potential PS prospect but rather just a camp arm.
RB Nice to see Fast Willie turn the corner. His speed to the outside will be key (especially with the way the OL looks right now). Mendy had a few nice runs and that must continue since he needs show that he can run with intensity every time he’s out there. Would have liked to see more of Redman as others have mentioned. Also, shame that Tank was hurt because he needs to get out there and show what he can do if he is to make the final roster. C.Davis made a decent block on Willie’s TD, but that’s about it. Vincent hasn’t shown enough to keep even on the PS this year.
WR – Holmes looks like he’s going to pick up where he left off in the SB, he will be Ben’s playmaker. To me Mike Wallace is the #3 right now, he runs the routes and makes the catches. Sweed was a bit of a let down after a good showing in the first game with a drop and some lazy routes. McDonald is a nice insurance policy to have as a #5 WR. The other receiver battling for a spot really haven’t shown much….Baker, Nance, Williams, Grisham, Black. Grisham seems to have a lot of heart though, not sure if that translates to the PS or not though. Maybe Nance is the guy for the PS again.
TE Heath is Heath. Not much else to get excited about here. Did notice that DJ was in the backfield to block on a play with the 1st team. Haven’t really got a good look at him running routes though.
OL Yikes! Looking a bit like last year when we struggled. Altough the first unit was OK considering. I think maybe Essex will end up with RG job even when Stapleton comes back. Legursky has been a suprise for me, better than I expected but he did have a bad shotgun snap. Shipley holds his own and at this point looks better to me than Urbik who really hasn’t shown that much for a high pick. Hills was abused by Orakpo and just looks awkward out there. Right now, he’s a liability at LT. Wouldn’t put him on the 53-man, maybe PS if that. Parquet got hurt but he hasn’t shown much either. Foster and Capizzi might be the best bet to be the backup OT’s but they haven’t shown that much either. All in all, OL still looks to be the weak spot on the team right now.
DL – Not bad, although the Skins first unit moved the ball on them, and later the 3rd unit was pushed around. Ziggy is the real deal and he has a nice motor. I think he’ll get into the rotational when the season begins.
LB – See above about Skins moving ball. To me Fox and Woods really stood out and established themselves as the backup ILBs. Woods even had that crushing hit on STs that Thiesmann credited to Timmons. At OLB, not seeing much from the backups….Frazier, A.Harrison, Davis, Bailey. Worries me a bit about depth going into season. Korte had a nice pic at the end of the game but probably not enough to keep him on the team. I think he’s the better of him and Schantz though.
DBs – I saw some good hitting out there, which is nice to see in the pre-season. I think Gay has shown that he can handle the starting job. Ratliff made a nice play on the pic, and I think he can be a decent nickle. Wonder if Townsend’s time is up, he looks like he’s getting by on instinct but not sure if that’s enough. Burnett and K. Lewis haven’t shown a whole lot in coverage, although I didn’t see any stupid mistakes either. Mundy hasn’t distinguished himself as a S, but again, he hasn’t made any big mistakes. Richardson looks like he can’t handle NFL level play in coverage at S. Thought, I saw Roy Lewis playing some S too in additon to CB. He throws his body around and plays with heart, but not sure if that’s enough.
ST The standout here of course was Logan. The was the best KR/PR performance I’ve seen from a Steeler in a long time (other than Holmes). To me if he can constently give us good field position (at least better than what we’ve had), that’ll be a big key to helping our O. I think he will make the 53man as our KR/PR unless he looks horrible in game 3

Questions
Okay….seen half this game thus far. Here’s the most relevant questions, IMO.
1. Will L.Timmons step it up against the run. Skins had about 60 yards rushing on that first series…check out Simmons being:
a. Outta position
b. Running around the action
c. Getting knocked flat on his ass
Hope he plays a bunch next game…hope we’re not watching him get his ass kicked on September 10th vs. TFF Lendale White, et al.
2. #3 WR: Sweed had the drop early, but made some catches. McDonald hangs onto the ball. Wallace hangs onto the ball AND has the jets. Wonder if we might see some variety in the #3 slot, whereas last year it was all Nate.
3. CB: Willie Gay!! Seeya BMac…won’t miss ya. Ratliff had a nice play on the pick. How many CBs we keep?
4. OL: Still hard to believe Steelers won a SB with this bunch.
5. WHOSE contract gets worked out, if any, in the remaining couple of weeks???
by swissvale72 on Aug 23, 2009 1:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
1) Timmons will be ready against Ten. 94 will be a play maker in 09.
2) Think you are right regarding the variety #3. I trust McDonald. 14 & 17 have major upside. If they keep Logan look for him to be part of a 5 wide package at some point. Shades of 95?
3) Think we keep 9 DB. Listed them in a response to my post above.
4) Could you imagine this team with a couple OL Swiss? My kingdom for a Bruce Van Dyke!
5) Skippy or Keisel.

Me too. He will get plenty of opportunity to prove he can stop the run against Ten. His athleticism should come in handy in taking down the ravens favorite RB to break in half, but in order to do so he will need to read the play and shed blocks.
Look forward to seeing the Bills game. Over at postgameheroes they are talking about Fox playing the Foote role this year (just hypothetical). If Timmons can’t get it together by Ten, they may have to. The rush defense was not impressive this last week.

Logan isn't listed as a RB; he'll be KR/PR/WR
All, Logan making this team isn’t going to impact what they do at the running back position. It will more so impact the LBs, DBs, and OL. I think the simplest way to look at this is that he just took Joe Burnett’s spot on the 53-man roster as well as being active on game day.
- I think Logan will be worked in a little more on special teams during the next couple of games to see how much he can contribute there. I noticed Ratliff played gunner on the punt team and did a better job of it than Burnett. So, to begin the season the gunners will be A. Madison and Ratliff. Pretty good, I think.
- I doubt if the team would cut Urbik (3rd round pick), so I could see them carrying 10 OL (unless they put Stapleton on the PUP list to begin the season). Legursky will make this squad. He’s been one of the most pleasant surprises during training camp, along with Wallace and R. Foster. And he’s that swing G/T until D. Stapleton is healthy. From what I’ve seen of Legursky, I think he is better than Stapleton. He doesn’t get bullied and bullrushed like Stapleton does. He’s pretty strong at the point of attack.
- Bruce Davis still hasn’t show enough to stick. If you read the interview on Steelers.com, Tomlin said Patrick Bailey made this team last year because he was dominant on special teams during training camp, and carried that over when he was activated from the practice squad to the regular squad during the season and continued on into the playoffs. That doesn’t sound like someone who is going to get cut to me. Bye-Bye Bruce Davis.
- As far as LB depth, if Woodley or J. Harrison has to miss a game, then more than likely L. Timmons will probably play the outside with K. Fox taking his spot on the inside. A. Frazier will rush some on passing downs and Donovan Woods can play OLB & ILB. Plus, A. Harrison will always be around if he’s cut. That is a worst case scenario. Let’s hope Woodley and J. Harrison stay healthy for the whole year.
- This game really helped separate some people and made some decisions easier. If I’m Joe Burnett, I’m feeling kind of sick right now.

Logan has to be in the mix
The ex-CFLer was pretty amazing in his debut. DT4L, I don’t think there’s any way Logan carves out a spot on kick coverage teams though. He’s a midget who probably hasn’t tackled anyone in a game since high school. He’s a return weapon and maybe a situational offensive guy in the slot. If he has another preseason game anything like last night’s and doesn’t put the ball on the ground, that’s going to be enough to make the team. I’d say Madison’s spot is in jeopardy. He’s pretty much just a one-role gunner and IMO that’s not as important as a one-role ace returner, especially if Sepulveda is putting his punts into the ionosphere. Maybe K. Lewis can be the gunner. You cut guys like Madison (which the Steelers have done before), not Burnett who has the ability to contribute if not this year than for years to come.
Totally agree with your positive view on Legursky but you mention him as the swing G/T. Did you mean swing G/C? I don’t remember seeing him as a tackle. Urbik has actually played quite well and has a spot for sure on the 53. Backup tackle is still a mess. Actually, starting tackle is still a mess, too. Keep a close eye on the waiver wires.
Carey Davis has made the team. No point in even wondering about that anymore. Johnson has also probably not only made the 53 but might replace McHugh on game days. The kid is a beast and also looks like a good special teamer. Spaeth has also been a very good blocker to date. With Essex being an upgrade on Stapleton at RG I think everything is coming together for the running game to improve. We just need the projected starting five to get some work together. Too many different backup parts shuffling all over the place so far. People should get used to the idea that Parker and Mendenhall will be the short-yardage backs this year. The only short-yardage or goal-line plays that haven’t been converted to date have been with Vincent carrying the ball. The line is getting a decent push and that’s all you need.
Wallace over Sweed as the most often used No. 3 WR this year. Great call on your part DT4L.

Steeler.lifer, I meant to say D. Legursky as the swing C/G
- My bad on that. You made an interesting point with A. Madison, but I think Tomlin will want him as his no. 1 gunner (and returning leading special teams tackler) come game time vs. Tennessee. I believe that Burnett can be put on the practice squad. Burnett isn’t competing against Madison. I think he’s competing against Stefan Logan as the team’s top punt returner (that was the only way that he was going to make this team and be active on game day and he might have lost that competition).
- Tank can’t make the club in the Tub. Hope his hammy heals up quickly so that he at least can have his shot on the field. I still believe he or Redman will make this team, and right now, that player is looking like it’ll be Redman.
- You have to like what D. Johnson showed on special teams and his blocking. I don’t know if McHugh is that good on special teams, but D. Johnson is going to have to knock him out to win this match (meaning he’s going to have to clearly play better than McHugh and gain Tomlin’s trust to do the same on gameday. He got some of his shots earlier this week, so that is a good sign.
- I still don’t trust Sweed. Some of his drops are the kind of catches that are needed on third down to keep the chains moving. I’m telling you, Mike Wallace is coming for that spot. I think they will keep McDonald, which will give them 5 WRs and 1 KR/PR/WR on the squad. Remember, this team only has 4 WRs active on game day so Logan will probably get some time the next couple of weeks learning some slot WR routes in case one of the top 4 (Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Sweed) are injured during a game).
- I think Nick Eason got the message with Sonny Harris’ play this past week, but there is NO WAY that the Steelers can or should cut Harris. Even Wex mentioned in a Twitter that he doesn’t think Harris would make it to the Steelers practice squad without someone scooping him up. He has better mobility than Eason, plays stronger on the field, is a better pass rusher and is stout at the point of attack. When you guys watch him play next week, watch how he gets his hands on the OL, finds the ball and drives him back or disengages to either burst toward the QB or find the running back. I like really like this kid, along with Ziggy. They’re doing a good job of using their hands in the trenches. Heck, even that McClendon kid isn’t bad. He’ll be on the practice squad.
- I still think Jason Capizzi is a little better than most people have given him credit for here. The reason why he isn’t as recognizable as some of the other lineman is because his man isn’t the one making the tackles or hitting the QB, and he isn’t the one jumping offsides or holding. He’s always had the tools, but he needed to improve his strength, learn to play more than LT and gain the trust of the coaching staff. I think he’s done that. I’m starting to think that if he or R. Foster ever get a shot to start that they might not give it up that easily.
- Our special teams this year could end up being pretty special. Sepulvada is punting like an All-Pro, J. Reed is J. Reed, and our coverage teams could be as good or a little better than this past year because of the experience factor. The wildcard is the returners, and you have to feel better about that with Logan’s performance.

pretty sure I remember that Logan was getting some work at WR during the off-season. It will be very interesting to see how that develops…

he’d work for a 5th, most 5th WR’s are just decoys anyway, their route is just to pull someone away from something else, either you cover the 5th or they are wide open. Short underneath passes with some blocking by Ward, Holmes and Sweed could lead to some dangerous plays.

good point
as long as he can catch at all, he’d be great for a 5th – we’ve already seen that he’s dangerous with the ball in space…

I guess he can catch
Turns out Logan caught 52 balls in the CFL last year.

Wallace vs Sweed
As you can tell, I’m a Sweed supporter but I’m also very excited to see what Wallace will bring to the table. Still I have top point out that coming out of college, Wallace had problems with dropping passes, due to lapses in concentration. Hopefully his won’t be as pronounced as Sweed, but don’t be surprised to see if Wallace drop a couple here and there. That being said, Wallace has looked very good up to this point and has caught the majority of passes, if not all passes thrown his way this August, so will have to wait and see.

Wallace vs Sweed
Sweed > Wallace this year.
Sweed adjusts to the ball better and goes up and gets it if the throw is off better than Wallace right now. Sweeds height makes him a better target close, unless Wallace runs way better routes, Sweeds the better option. Wallace is faster, but Sweed runs by people also. Not saying Wallace will never be better but this year I think Sweed is.

SNW, Child Please ....
I bet U before the end of the year that M. Wallace will be the 3rd WR in this offense. He’s just a more consistent WR than Sweed is right now, and for a rookie to have that over a 2nd year player, either the rookie is special or the 2nd year guy hasn’t lived up to his billing. In this case, I think it is a combination of both.
I wonder why is it so difficult for Sweed to catch a pass near the sidelines? Anything near the sidelines and the ball goes “Clank!”, right off his hands.
Now, on the other hand, if we can just get a QB that can get Wallace the ball without underthrowing him ….

Wallace hasn't proved he's more consistent.
Though he may look it, he still has the enormous task of learning the offense before he can be considered consistent. I’ll be pulling for both him and Sweed but unless Sweed just completely rolls over the Steelers won’t put a rookie in over a vet, even if the vet is of limited experience. As I have said before, however, there probably will be times where we do see Wallace at number 3, or maybe even McDonald.

DT4L, he’s going to get underthrown a lot. Even Ben is guilty of under-throwing deep balls. That was one of Nate Washington’s weak points, he rarely outfought a guy for a jump ball even though he was faster, taller and had longer arms than most DBs. This is not an offense built around pretty plays that are perfectly executed. It’s a Bruce Arians’ offense. When Ben needs to make something happen he goes into the huddle and says: “Broken play, on one”.

lol yeah
In truth thats why I think I like seeing Sweed’s length get tested. He has shown he can make the tough ones, but seems like the simple ones are getting away from him. I personally am thinking he’s just thinking TOO much about that simple stuff, or possibly pondering about the Run after too much when he needs to focus on the catch.
I think Mike Wallace is bossing up big time, but Sweed fits the offense better and will get there.
Our last SBMVP had dropsy, fumblitis, and marijuana problems. So far Sweeds doing ok.
