Charlie, your time has come and gone
Hind site is 20/20, but I am really wishing the Steelers would have taken at shot at the athletic phenomenon that is Michael Vick. All the stars were lined up to make the move and we didn’t pull the trigger. I have never viewed Vick as a starting NFL quarterback, but instead his potential should have been maximized as a player running, catching, and throwing balls; hell he could even return kicks. The Steelers have always relied on gadgetry and trick plays. There certainly was room for him on our offense. If the Dixon injury happens 2 weeks earlier he is probably wearing the black and gold. My assessment of the QB position pre Dixon injury shows how we needed him.
Charlie Batch is well past his prime. He should have retired following his season ending injury last year, which was only a 6-8 week injury if he was that valuable. In fact his injury was a blessing in disguise last year because there is no way we beat Washington when Ben went down and that probably costs us the division to the Ravens. Instead he decided to hang on for one more year and high jack the 2nd QB spot with his experience which seemingly has been grandfathered to him year after year for no apparent reason. He probably even has a coaching position on our staff if he retires. Instead I have to watch him take valuable preseason snaps, waddle around the pocket, throw incomplete 5 yard check downs, and stare at that god awful face mask he wears. Tell me if Ben was to go down with an inner ear infection that he is calling a brain aneurism that you would have been comfortable with Charlie Bizzell leading the way, no way! Charlie is a poor mans Trent Green post concussion, which means he's worse than worse.
Now on to Dixon, as I do not yet know the full extent of his injury (weeks?, which shoulder?, separation degree?), but this kid is making some strides. He was zinging the ball, moving around in the pocket, and using his legs when needed. He undoubtedly should be the number 2 pre injury. He needed to make some mistakes downfield to learn from but that comes with experience playing against starting defenses. Tell me if Ben goes down with a broken rib that the medical staff does not know about that you wouldn’t be excited to unleash Denny Dixon on the rest of the league. Dixon brings excitement, Batch brings despair.
What does this all mean?! It means that Charlie Batch probably cost us Vick and Dixon. We didn’t make a move on Vick because it probably would have meant cutting Charlie, who has been so loyal. Also if Batch retired or would have been cut Denny Dix is the #2 and taking first team snaps and not playing 3 quarters with and against 2nd and 3rd teamers. Would-a, should-a, could-a, but sometimes you need to sacrifice past their prime vets for upside and potential. Again I say hind site is 20/20

Right
Did Batch beat you up and steal your lunch money when you were a child? I am not sure where you unwavering hatred for Charlie has come from.
It means that Charlie Batch probably cost us Vick and Dixon.
I had to start here, because this is the most ludicrous statement in your fanpost. So its Charlie’s fault that Dixon got injured? That is the dumbest thing I have ever read. Its a full contact sport, Dixon is going to get hit and sometimes hurt when he plays. This will happen if he is 2nd string or 33093rd string. Also, if Batch did indeed influence Vick not coming
here I am ready to give him the season MVP, before the season starts.
You are making Dixon up to sound like the best QB in the league, when he still has yet to play a couple of series against 1st team defenses in an NFL game. Batch has this experience, and has proven he can come in when Ben goes down. If Ben goes down, I am more confident in putting Batch behind center than an unproven 2nd year QB.

Exactly it is a post so you need to chill. I am stating my opnion is that Batch sucks and is past his prime. I may not be the best writer but I am trying to envision what could have been had he retired. What has batch done in the last 2 years? Nothig more than Vick or Dixon. So please don’t be so harsh with your opinionative arrogance.

With my “opinionative” arrogance? I’d re-read your fanpost before calling anyone opinionated or arrogant.
What has Batch done in the last 2 years that Vick or Dixon haven’t? How about throw more than 1 pass in a meaningful part of a game, throw a touchdown, or start an NFL game. I’d say these are all more than Dixon or Vick have done.
Its one thing to imagine if Batch was not here, its another thing to attack him with dumb accusations that are opinionated and wrong. The guy is a stand-up guy who has taught Ben a ton about the game. Additionally, Batch probably could have left us and gone and started somewhere else (and we woulda been in bad shape then), but he did not. He stuck around for his home team and took the role of a back up. That’s very respectable.

But when you do be prepared to a) back it up or b) take the heat. But don’t use your lack of eloquence be an excuse for not having a valid point.
btw, I’d take Batch over Dixon at this point in both of their careers.

Probably is referring to this:
Tell me if Ben goes down with a broken rib that the medical staff does not know about that you wouldn’t be excited to unleash Denny Dixon on the rest of the league. Dixon brings excitement, Batch brings despair.
The problem I see is Dixon isn’t ready. Yeah he brings excitement, but that excitement is based on potential. He is starting to look like a guy who will be a good QB. that is exciting when we got the guy as late in the draft as we did. If he continues to improve we’ll have something. But I’m not willing to throw him in against the Ravens with the season on the line. They would kill the poor kid.
Charlie’s talent is losing to his age, but his experience is where he is valuable. He’ll stick around because he can come in for a game and a half and not cost us the season. If Ben is out for more than that, we are screwed anyway.
As for Vick, no way he makes it on this team.

Clearly, I was exaggerating
I don’t actually think you believe Dixon is the best QB in the league.
However, you did make him out to be better than Batch, which is not true. Tomlin has said before he does not pick favorites. He puts the best players in that will give him the best chance of winning. If he thought Dixon was better than Batch, you’d see him there on the depth chart. That has not happened, so I trust Tomlin’s belief that Batch is better than Dixon.

Hind site and hindsight....
You sit on one, Commish, and the other enables you to look backwards.
On this one, I think you’re talking through the former.
Batch looked good in the muck and mire at FedEx Field in the rain and 100% humidity. The field was soggy and the ball extremely slippery. The teevee didn’t do the mess justice, other than a few shots of the rain/fog. He’s smart, he knows the system and knows the players. He’ll be fine in the short term – as he has always been filling in for Ben.
He’s been fragile and the offensive line is what it is, so that scares all of us. But if he hands the ball off, throws a lot of quick passes and doesn’t hold on to the ball too long, he’ll be the ideal back-up QB. He won’t make the stupid plays that cost you games.
As far as him costing us Vick and Dixon, c’mon now! The Steelers wanted to kept Lefty but couldn’t even afford him under the cap. Even if the Steelers wanted Vick, where in the name of deficit spending and stimulus do you think they could have come up with money to match the Iggles on the former inmate?

I've always like Batch.
I don’t understand your hatred of Batch. He’s a good #2 and has always been a good #2. When Ben was out from his accident Batch filled in admirably.
Steelers don’t want Vick. He’s a cancer and a distraction. He’s not a player the Steelers have ever wanted in the past or will want in the future, so to blame it on Batch is ridiculous.
Heck, your whole post is ridiculous.

I'm gonna have to politely disagree here...
Batch was a good #2 two years ago…
He was a good #2 for his duration with the team.
But after what I saw Saturday, it has become painfully obvious that father time has caught up with Charlie.
If Ben went down 2 years ago, I’d be ok with Charlie coming in and holding the fort down.
If Ben goes down week 4, I’m gonna cry if Charlie starts taking snaps…

as if Dixon was impressive. He wasn’t. Keep in mind he still does not know as much about the playbook as Charlie does AND he has yet to take a snap against a 1st team defense in a real game. Keeping all of that in mind, do you still disagree?

There are a couple of things I liked in this post… including: “Tell me if Ben was to go down with an inner ear infection that he is calling a brain aneurysm”
Hey, give the guy his due, that was funny.
As for Vick, we don’t need him, and it certainly is not the Steelers way. The only reason that Tomlin didn’t say right out: “Every day I walk to work past six Lombardi Trophies, not six dog-fighting championships…” is that he likes messing with the media.
Dixon has potential. I like the kid. My problem is that they are making him into a Kordell Stewart “Pocket Passer” which is just stupid. We all know what happened when Kordell dropped the slash moniker and started trying to be Neil O’Donnell.
The problem with Dixon is we don’t have the offensive creativity to use him correctly. Whiz could. Mularky sure could have. But BA? Give me a break… the kid should pray to get cut by the Steelers and picked up by someone who can use that blazing speed in a game plan.
Charlie Batch is still our guy because with this defense, you usually only need ten points to win a game, and he can get you that. And he is smart enough not to throw the back-breaking interception.
I don’t feel good about Dixon under center if we are playing the Ravens, Titans, or any other team that knows how to rattle a rookie QB into a big mistake.
So, although your post made me chuckle… I can’t agree,
Gimme Batch.

I think we need to see Batch do something better than 5/14 63 yards and three more incompletions that were negated by penalties before we feel any more confident about him than Dixon. Dixon’s injury makes the competition moot at this point anyway, but it’s a long season. Batch has not outplayed Dixon on the field to this point.

Maybe not… but Dixon has not outplayed Batch either — and Dixon was mostly against a bunch of guys named “Hey You!”. Batch was against 1st and 2nd string.

The guy just doesn’t fit the Steeler mold. Arians isn’t willing to pull all those trick plays, and it’s been made clear that Vick is coming back to be a QB, nothing else. Plus regardless of the connections to Tomlin and Tomlin to Dungy to Vick, the Steelers don’t want anything to do with a guy like Vick, reformed or not. Dennis Dixon’s gone for a couple weeks, but he’s our 3rd string. Batch has yet to let us down in a major way or give us any reason to believe he can’t perform at an acceptable level any more.

Vick’s been out of football two years, was pretty much a running back with a strong arm before he was canned, and really just a fantasy at this point. Plus the guy won’t be able to dress for one third of the season, so what’s the point. Just let it go will ya!

Batch knows the system, his teammates,
and how they fit together. He’s not a star QB, but he’s a helluva game manager. His arm isn’t what it used to be (whose is after 32?) but the coaches and team have a great comfort level with him.
I remember some great teams whose QBs went down and they continued to win, not because the backup was a star but because he could go in and not screw up.

I’m conflicted about him…one hand I think his skills are just ok but on the other hand, I’m happy to have him…I know it doesn’t make sense but it’s how I feel.
Btw, Dixon is not ready. Even if he didn’t get hurt, Batch gets the nod due to experience. Man is Dixon fast, real fast…but I just have this feeling he would get absolutely crushed, like snapped in half, during regular season.

The Nation Seems so adamant about Batch
The frustrating thing to me is all the support that a backup QB that is past his prime and a year removed fro competitive football is getting. I wrote this post to bring attention to the fact that Charlie is not a viable 2. Instead people seem to focus my Vick and Dixon comments. With Vick it is simple, i never suggested him as an answer at 2, but instead a threat out of the backfield, nobody knows how this would work because it never has been done. Instead everyone seems to be steadfast against it. On a side note I believe the man has served his time for the crime he commited. He has never had a positive male role model to look up to and I think it would have been interesting to monitor his maturation process as a man and a football player under the tutelage of Mike Tomlin. God knows he has the skills, why are we all so against seeing someone defeat the odds and over come enormous amounts of adversity and pressure bestowed by the media. I root for these kind of people not against them, it is unethical to encourage ones demise unless you are ignorant.

problem child aka Vick
You know… when we got The Bus he had been labeled a malcontent in LA. Now we know the history and I am making a gigantic leap even comparing Bettis and Vick (I’ve taken the precaution of grounding myself in case lightning strikes) – but the idea that the Steelers only employ altar boys is just not true. Last years backup RB and lamest KR ever, Dookie Davenport immediately comes to mind. And I have a feeling that questionable character and maturity were thrown out the window when the steelers saw a fast WR out of Michigan state that was 6’5 and 225.
Not to say that we are the Raiders, taking on every talented headcase in the league, but there is precedent for taking risk when it comes to talent.
Now with that said, I’m quite happy that Vick will be in Philly and I’ll get to hear the locals turn on him “like a pack of wild dogs” (get it?) when he makes his first mistake…
Oh and Charlie Batch has proven himself to be a valuable backup and game manager when he’s played. He’s shown the ability to sling it deep too. But knowing that our O-Line is not going to turn into the second coming of the Early 90’s Hogs, I’d feel better with Dixon’s mobility. I hear at training camp they timed Charlie Batch with a calender… It takes him an hour to make “Minute Rice”… He rides a giant tortoise and yells Yeehaw… Yep, he’s a bit speed challenged.
I’ll be here all week. And, don’t forget to tip your waiters and bartenders.

Sorry Commish, you just dont know what you’re talking about. I’m surprised you didnt lobby for the return of Omar Jacobs in there somwhere. Batch is an experienced , NFL quarterback, who knows the system, reads defenses, and has lost a step. Dixon isnt even Kordell Stewart yet, though he did resemble him in the Washington game. Not while running, but when he was firing laser darts on flare patterns in the flats. He made a few ok throws down the field, but had no touch on any of the throws which required some. I watched that game , and thought, Good thing we have Batch, this kid isn’t ready. Nice scramle early though, reminded me of Randal Cunningham actually. Maybe in a few years???

Whats with the low blows
Omar Jacobs? Kordell? My opinion is simple, Batch has not played relevent football since 2006 season. We were real good that year. The Colts, Giants, and Steelers have won Superbowls since he has played a relevent game. He is no longer suited to quarterback an NFL team period. Denny Dixon in my opinion is head and shoulders above Charlie at this stage of their respective careers.
Now to challenge my knowledge, it is not that far off.

None of you get it.
The main reason that Batch is so incredibly valuable is that his experiance has allowed him to run the best damned scout team in the NFL hands down! He is smart enough that he can lead, teach, and most importantly mimick what our opposition is going to do the following week.
Batch has been constantly applauded by Lebeau in that he helps prepare his defense better than any QB who has ever run a scout team against him. Batch is a marvel at taking the film study of the unit they will play against and mimicking similar scenarios so that our defense can practice against it.
For that reason alone Batch keeps the #1 defense the #1 defense and more than earns his roster spot. Dixon is going to be learning how to be the quarterback he’s going to be. Batch has mastered being the quarterback that we are going to be playing against, for the week prior to the game anyway.

Also, who’s the guy always standing next to Ben on the sidelines, talking to him?
I still think Batch has the skills to take the team down the field (hey, it was 10-3 Steelers when the first team offense left the field against the Redskins — and they were the #4 def last year that added Orakpo and Albert Painsworth.
But what Charlie brings on weekdays and also for almost being a coach/mentor to the rest of the offense on game days makes him worth the roster spot.

In all fairness
I actually know a few of Mike Vick’s cousins. The ones I met are really nice people. My wife had one in her class at Newport Academy (right next to Woodside High in Newport News). This school is for the emotionally disturbed. They lived in an area in Newport NEws called “the bottom”. The rule in “the bottom” is survival of the fittest. You hustle to make it. I feel for them because they have two things going on. One: The area they are from doesn’t produce much of anything positive. Two: It’s almost like they are cursed with a sort of mental block. He didn’t leave VT early because he wanted to (that may have been a factor) but he had to leave because his GPA was close to zero. I’m not saying this to be negative. I’m saying this to help you to undesrtand him a little better. While I believe a man can make it out of the dregs and be something, some people have some tremendous odds to overcome.
Now: His skills are ridiculous. They are almost worth the risk. The type of guy Vick is (I’m guessing he much like the family member I know) he can be mentored well by a strong person, but that would be a day and night job. The reason? If you give him too much time without you guiding him, it won’t take much to distract him. This could lead to another bad decision.
I don’t know where I’m going with this or what I’m trying to say exactly, but I like the guy and I love his skills but I don’t know if the Steelers would want to have to do what they would need to do to keep him on track in the off season. My vote would have to be no….but it would be my head overruling my heart. My heart sees those skills and says heck yeah. My head says..Waaaaaay too much baggage.

Uhhh I am an avid social drinker here and nothing bad has come of it. You cannot blame stupidity on the alcohol. If you are stupid you are going to make stupid decision sober or drunk. Stallworth made the stupid decision of getting behind the wheel of the car.
I hate Vick more than probably anyone on these boards, but the man can’t have a social life? He just spent 2 years in jail with a bunch of dudes. If I was him I would also be out living up life and hanging around women.
Keeping that all in mind, I still think Vick has a criminal mind, and I would not be surprised if we find his hand in that cookie jar again.

You've got to be kidding me...
First of all, semantics out of the way, it was an airport bar, not a club. Second, he had one… one. Even if he slammmed it, that hardly equates to hammering down drinks.
Onto the Stalworth comments… was he about to get behind the wheel? No, unless he has a pilot’s licence.
As for his brother, I can’t deny you that. But how many other family members of his are you familiar with? Any other ones? Pretty wide brush Picasso.
