BlitzKurtains Steelers: The first 5 CUTS

The following writing is opinion formed based on "factual" observations of our roster. If you deny in any way please feel free to express your opinion in the section below. These are my predicted first cuts, which happen in one week. Enjoy, and "Lets Go STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!"

Star-divide

  1. ALEX STEPANOVICH: He was signed as "veteran insurance". And was struggling with 3rd string D lineman. Something we dont need with Legursky looking stronger than him. Bye big man, hope u find money somewhere else.
  2. JEREMY PARQUET: He is injured at a crucial time. And he played poorly to begin with. I believe this is the move made to keep the young and promising Ramon Foster. Again bye bye, hope someone else finds a use for you.
  3. JUSTIN VINCENT: He got the oppurtunity, but showed little compared to other options we have. I wont risk cutting the "Tank" this early. And Redman already punched his ticket in to get by this 1st cut. Sorry Justin, u took too long, Bye.
  4. DEZMOND SHERROD: He has been "outshined" by many. Especially David Johnson, 7th round pick. DJ is as strong as they come, he held his ground against "Silverback". Sorry Dezmond i would rather invest my time and money in DJ, bye now!
  5. TYLER GRISHAM: Its way too crowded at WR. And Tyler, you are the "weakest link". There are enough starting caliber recievers already. We are set 5 deep with Ward, Holmes, Sweed, Wallace, and Mcdonald. We can afford to cut any WR behind them.
Thats my opinion, whats yours?

5 cuts

You are wrong on the Grisham kid. You have WRs that have been on the PS, a 6 year veteran, and others. A 6 year veteran has had a long time to get much better than a UFA. McDonald is no better than Grisham, he just costs more. You have others that have also been around, and did no better in camp than Grisham. The Steelers have a history of bringing along talent, and this kid fits the bill. Having watched them all in camp, this guy produces at least at the same level as McDonald. At least put him on the PS, and let him learn the system. The kid gives 150% on every play, and also plays special teams. He can easily be the 5th WR on this team, based on what I saw in camp.

by steelfan on Aug 26, 2009 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Hmmm...

I agree, maybe it is a good move to put him on the PS, I cut Dallas Baker instead. But dont go saying McDonald is no better than Grisham. McDonald has 6 years of experience, Grisham will be lucky if he lasts 6 years.

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 26, 2009 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions

ya, sorry you are wrong

McDonald caught everything thrown his way in pre-season.

If god forbid Hines Ward goes down you would rather have Tyler Grisham catching balls with the first team rather than Shaun McDonald?

One thing that worries me about McDonald

I have not seen enough from either guy to comment on who is better or has more potential. One thing I have noticed on McDonald though is his fluidity, as in he’s not been smooth in catching. He made several grabs in camp and preseason which means he’s getting open either/or he the qb is looking his way. However in making his grabs he seems to be struggling with bobbling the ball and then halling the pass in. Bobbles are not something you want on a consistant basis from an NFL caliber wide receiver.

by TheCommish on Aug 26, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with DYMS

mcdonald is old enough potential is not a question about him. the team probably knew what they were getting with him with his past performance. i’m guessing he hasn’t surpassed those expectations nor did he miss them. grisham is the one with potential and also can be put on the PS, which mcdonald can’t. i think that’s where grisham will end up

Thanks DYMS you made my point clear.

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 27, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

first cuts...

1. Ryan Clark (too injury prone and he can’t play in Denver. plus we have the depth)

2. Urbik (hasn’t done anything through TC and 2 preseason games)

3. Deshea Townsend (too old)

4. Rashard Mendenhalll (Can you say Bust???)

5. Big Snack (Hoke can handle 16 games)

by throwtoheath on Aug 26, 2009 3:34 AM EDT reply actions

Hmmm...

1. We have no depth at all behind Clark.
2. Give the young OG more time.
3. Dare i say it, I can live with this cut. We have many other nickel corners we can use.
4. Again, give the young RB more time.
5. WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

lol

I did not. Just played along and offered my opinion.

Maybe we should cut Heath Miller,
what u think “throwtoheath” lol

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 26, 2009 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions

We should probably cut Ben too

With all his legal stuff he will be so distracted on the field. Plus he is just a game manager and doesn’t throw for enough yards to generate enough stats for me. Keeping in mind that Dixon has had the best preseason for a QB in the history of the NFL I think it makes sense. Clearly, with the display of skill Dixon has showed against 2nd and 3rd string Ds, he is ready to start an NFL game.

We already have better younger and cheaper options on our roster

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 27, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes but my choices are far better!

Wghat makes you think our options are better? We could get Shaq to play tightend too. He could even be our backup Qb as well. Now give me my 1 back dang you!

Shaq at TE. You would never lose a fade route to the corner of the endzone ever again.

by John Stephens on Aug 27, 2009 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we can lock those guys up for a very cap friendly deal. They are all unwanted at this point. We bring them into a deal laden with incentives that they can opt out of next year.

From the get-go they will be better than the players we currently have. If we want to repeat, we need at least all three of them.

Good thing you are not the coach of the Steelers, there is a job for you in Oakland. I bet your next two cuts are Ben and Troy!! Not one of the five you mentioned will be cut!!!

by ColinP on Aug 26, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Ben and Troy have needed to be cut for a long time coming. Don’t get me started. Not to mention we need a new defensive coordinator.

The first five cuts will likely be hard to guess, because they probably aren’t the guys you are thinking of. They will most likely be guys whose names you haven’t heard. Also I think it is important to have guys who can take reps towards the end of the pre-season from guys who are potentially backups. Going through the roster, I’m going to throw out a few other options:

1) Steven Black (WR) – who the hell is this?
2) Tom Korte/Shantz (LB) – We needs LBs, but haven’t heard/seen anything from them, one is cut at least
3) Dallas Baker/Nance/Williams (WR) – Baker and Nance have been around and aren’t doing much.

I think options around those three go first. After that I’d probably go through your list, but I don’t think it will be:

1) Alex Stepanovich – We need a third C to take snaps.
2) Grisham – Plenty of other WR fat to cut first
3) Sherrod – We need TEs to take snaps in pre-season, don’t have too many TEs

So I think Parquet and Vincent.

Korte has been playing well from what I heard…I think he made a real nice interception they other day at practice. But I pretty much agree with your other picks….Korte is from a real small school and might get lucky with a shot on the practice squad.

by Frank Mineo (DYMS) on Aug 26, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Disagree

1) Our 3rd Center is Legursky behind Stapleton. We dont need this old baggage. He is just using up time we could be spending on Legursky and A.Q. Shippley. Developing them into quality Backups for our OL.
2) I cut Grisham because of his size. We already have 3 established WRs who are under 6ft tall (ward, holmes, mcdonald), we need to develop more redzone targets like Sweed(6’4’’) and maybe Baker(6’3’’). Grisham does not fit that bill at 5’11’’. And he has No Pro Experience.
3) We have Miller as our Starter, Spaeth is a Backup, Mchugh has experience and is a great blocker, and 7th round pick David Johnson has looked very promising. Sherrod has hung around too long, Johnson and Mchugh are the ones we want to see fight for a Roster spot.

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 27, 2009 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

1) You are very correct, but Stapleton is injured for the foreseeable future. You don’t run camp or play in pre-season with just 2 centers bub.
2) It doesn’t matter what his size is. If he is the best UDFA receiver on the roster, and most reports put him there, you don’t cut him first.
3) It took me to this point to realize you didn’t even bother reading my post. I’ll stop beating my head against a wall now.

Willie Colon doesn’t get flagged because he has long arms; he gets flagged because he sucks. - cliff harris is still a punk!

by steelguy99 on Aug 27, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

this may not change your position on stepanovich or you may already know this but...

training camp ended 6 days ago. time between when the first 5 ppl are cut and the rest of the cuts are made to get the roster to 53 ppl will be 4 days and 1 preseason game. hartwig played against the redskins, so i might be missing an injury to someone, but that i think that means we currently have 4 uninjured centers on the roster right now (hartwig, legursky, shipley, and stepanovich).

by t1mmy10 on Aug 27, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm...

Look at it this way steelguy99:
1) Stapleton is guaranteed to come back before week 2.
Legursky is proven against starting caliber DL such as Haynesworth.
A.Q. Shippley has been praised by coaches and players alike.
A.Q. Shippley will be our 3rd C.
2) Okay he is the best rookie UDFA WR on the roster…Umm is it just me or is that not impressive “sounding” at all… Thats like saying he can spit the farthest with his eyes closed, when comparing him to our WRs!! Ward owns Steeler WR Records! Holmes has scored a TD in 4 straight NFL Playoff Games and is current SB MVP! Sweed was a monster in college, he went to the championship game and won it! Wallace can let his play as of lately do the talking. McDonald is our leading WR this pre season and he is a vet. We are loaded at WR!!
But this far into the preseason the only short WR besides our two SB MVPs, to show any “ability” to play the pro game is…
McDonald… And we have two established “Red Zone Projects” in Nance and Baker… and that is something this team needs a “Big Red Zone” target… we already have enough short, tough, and fast guys. And two of them are SB MVPs.
3) HUH?? lol im lost now… Well do u agree with my point of view? Who does?

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 27, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

We don’t get the games in the Philly market so I miss a lot of the good stuff….so three quick questions:

1) Does the Reilly QB stick until we know more about Dixon’s shoulder and how long he’ll be out?
2) How good does Ramon Foster look? I’ve been reading a lot here, and it sounds like we may have some young depth on the line. Could this guy make an impact this year?
3) Capazzi going to make the active roster this year, or does he end up on the PS again?

by dawgs144 on Aug 26, 2009 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

1) Yes, we need a camp arm at the very least.
2) Good, but probably not this year. We have enough new projects on the line.
3) If Capizzi doesn’t make it this year, he’s done. I say he makes it.

Willie Colon doesn’t get flagged because he has long arms; he gets flagged because he sucks. - cliff harris is still a punk!

My Take

1) No! We have Charlie and a seperated shoulder can not keep Dixon out that long. Maybe two months at the most. No need to waste a Roster Spot on O’Reily.
2) Depends on injuries to our line. I believe if he ever gets a start at RG or RT he will be hard to sit down. This kid has size, good feet, great technique, and plays with a mean streak. Watch out for this guy if Colon goes down early, he has potential.
3) Yes! He is the only dependable Backup Tackle, because Essex is primarily a RG.

by BlitzKurtain on Aug 27, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Ramon FOster

Well Jim Wexell already thinks he may be the best run blocker on the team. Which is not quite the praise it might be elsewhere ;)

But yes he could make an impact this season. He has versatility too so if he makes the roster he is likely to dress for games.

I don’t think Capizzi qualifies for the Practice Squad anymore. He could make it. For my money he’s in direct competition with Tony Hills for one slot.

Reilly probably sticks til Dixon is fully healthy again.

by KiwiSteelerFan on Aug 27, 2009 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

i like all your picks except grisham. although i think he will eventually find himself being cut and possibly being put on the practice squad, i think some of the other WR’s have performed worse than him (nance or williams). mclendon (i’m guessing since i haven’t heard anything about him since camp started) could also be cut as well and with mchugh’s surgery maybe sherrod will be post-poned and be PS’ed.

by t1mmy10 on Aug 26, 2009 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

oh, and taking into account those that can be put on the PS versus those that can't:

Stepanovich, Parquet, Nance & Williams are all not practice squad eligible so i’m guessing at least the 2 linemen and one of those WR will be cut

by t1mmy10 on Aug 26, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

No one who gets cut first is going to make the PS though. Usually the last cuts would be the guys who end up on the PS.

Willie Colon doesn’t get flagged because he has long arms; he gets flagged because he sucks. - cliff harris is still a punk!

by steelguy99 on Aug 26, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

i think that players that the coaching staff has ID’ed as they won’t make the 53 man roster and aren’t PS eligible are more likely to be cut first than the ones who are just as bad but can be put on the PS. obviously if coaching staff wants to put them on the PS they won’t be cut now. if a player is PS eligible but doesn’t have a shot at the team i’d rather keep him around for another week and preseason game to see if he shows something than a player whose just as unlikely to make the team, but has no opportunity to play on the PS.
