HAPPY TO SEE MENDY DO NOTHIN'
I'D ' VE ACCEPTED MENDY DOING NOTHING SATURDAY,,,,YOU KNOW THE KNEEJERK REASONS id I'D STILL BE PATIENT AND HAPPY TO WAIT FOR HIM TO MOVE UP FROM NOTHING. THE SAME REASONS
BUT HE DIDN'T DO NOTHIN 'SATURDAY,,,, HE STUNK. HE CHICKENED OUT OF PASS BLOCKING A COUPLE TIMES, ALMOST TURNED HIS BACK.
HE SHOWED NO VISION ON THAT DELAYED DRAW,,,,, THAT WAS A POSSIBLE SCORE.
HE SHOWED NO REAL ENTHUSIASM FOR THE BALL ON A COUPLE DUMP PASSES THAT HE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT IN SPACE.
HE DID HAVE TWO GOOD CUTS TO A HOLE, BUT BOTH WERE AS CLEANLY SHEID BLOCKED AS WE'VE HAD RECENTLY
HE GOT STOPPED A COUPLE TIME BY ONE MAN ONE LEG TACKLE, NEVER BROKE A TACKLE.
I'M AFFRAID THAT IN HIS SHORTER THAN USUAL FOOTBALL RESUME HE MAY HAVE NOT GOT TO EVEN ACCEPT CONTACT, YET ALONE LIKE TO USE IT. AND MAYBE RAY LEWIS SEALED THE DEAL LAST YEAR WITH THAT PERFECTLY PLACED GREETING.
BOUT A MONTH BACK I PULLED SOME OF HIS YOU TUBE HIGHLIGHTS AND LEFT THINKIN' YEAH THIS GUY JUST MIGHT HAVE SOMETHIN SPECIAL I WASN'T POSITIVE, BUT IWAS PRETTY SURE,,, NOW , I'M AFFRAID I WAS FLAT OUT WRONG..........................BUT I'M POSITIVE STEFAN LOGAN IS SPECIAL

You might wanna avoid ALL CAPS
but otherwise i pretty well agree with you.
I’m not calling Mendenhall a bust yet, but he definitely turned his back while pulling blitz-pickup and failed to lower his shoulder to take on contact directly a few other times.
A RB with Mendy’s size should be punishing guys. Not turning his back on ’em.
That’s exactly how Ray McMurderwitness borke his collarbone: Mendy turned his back on Lewis.
Weak.
GOOD TO SEE YOU PULLING FOR "YOUR TEAM"
ALSO GOOD TO SEE YOUR CAPS LOCK IS STILL WORKING! ANY STEELERS FAN WOULD BE HAPY TO SEE OUR OWN FIRST ROUND PICK DO POORLY (Poorly to the tune of around 5 yards per carry). Stats link

Night and Day
I’m shocked to keep seeing the amount of back and forth on Mendy. For every good write up I see in the sports pages, I see two or three negative comments here. I’m confused on which to believe.
As NYSteelersFan4 points out about, 5 yards a carry is not too shabby in my book. I certainly don’t want to read about the blitz pick-up whiff though…
Which is the correct scouting? We have an awful lot tied into this guy and getting another Tim Worley is not the results I had been hoping for.
For the most part
I have been VERY impressed with Mendenhall’s blocking in pass protection. I must have missed the missed block on Monday night. I missed the first half so that might explain it. Regardless, missed blocking assignments to happen from time to time. As long as it doesn’t happen regularly I don’t see that as being a big problem.
As for running out of bounds. Doesn’t really bother me either. In both instances he had already ripped off huge chunks of yardage. I was perturbed that he didn’t stay in bounds on the later run because of milking the clock, but the clock was restarted anyways as it happened prior to the 5:00 minute mark in the 4th quarter.
The only real issue I see with him is his penchant for fumbling. He was lucky the camera angle was bad on the near fumble at the goal line late in the game. The ball appeared to have been jarred loose on original contact and I think the only thing that saved an overturn was no good camera angle proving he didn’t regain control after the ball was knocked loose.
If he can correct the fumblitis, the rest of his game is well above average. His pass catching ability alone makes him a definite upgrade over Willie Parker. I think the poster is overreacting. Mendenhall had a solid game.

Pre-season football isn't about stats
A few years ago we drafted Omar Jacobs, and we saw him go something like 6/9 for 75 yards. Good stats, huh? Mendenhall simply doesn’t pass the eyeball test. If he’s a cowardly blocker, now you’ve got real problems.
This is Mendenhall’s second camp, and outside of the fumbling problem, I don’t think anybody has seen a marked improvement. That’s a bad sign, a real bad sign. I certainly hope he figures it out, but I’m not optimistic about it.

When your headline says “Happy to see Mendy do nothing” it suggests you already have your mind made up about him and are looking for things to justify your opinion. Will you be disappointed when he scores a TD in the regular season?

Rashard Mendenhall
I am becoming increasingly concerned that Mendenhall will be a bust, although I have not yet given up hope. What is very upsetting to me is this list of Running Backs who were drafted after the Steelers drafted Mendenhall in last year’s draft:
Chris Johnson
Matt Forte
Ray Rice
Kevin Smith
Jamal Charles
Steve Slaton
Tashard Choice
Tim Hightower
Now, I’m not suggesting that I’d prefer that entire list over Rashard Mendenhall, but there are certain players on that list that I feel are inarguably superior to Rashard Mendenhall at this point. Now, if you want to hang on to the fact that I qualified that statement by adding “at this point,” well, you’re more optimistic than I.
All of that having been said, keep in mind that the guy who once started for Illinois over Rashard Mendenhall, Pierre Thomas, was not highly regarded coming out of college, going undrafted in 2007 and starting both the 2007 and 2008 seasons as the third-string back in New Orleans. Now, Pierre Thomas is being talked about as a guy who could lead the league in rushing touchdowns and is at the top of the New Orleans running back depth chart over Reggie Bush (you remember him, he was supposed to be the “next Gale Sayers”).
We’ll see what happens. There is certainly reason to be optimistic, but Mendenhall’s underwhelming performance both in the pre-season games and throughout training camp is certainly reason to have some concern.
2009 will be a telling year for Mendenhall and the future of the Steelers running game.

Patience is boring
I know it’s boring to preach patience but that’s what everybody has to have with Mendenhall. He’s a very immature runner (and perhaps person) who is still figuring things out. Out of your list of 08 draftees, he’s younger than all of them by anywhere from five months to two and a half years in Choice’s case. He’s almost two years younger than Johnson. He had one year in college when he had 100 carries, all of the others had at least three seasons with 100 carries. When he was Pierre Thomas’ teammate, he was a redshirt sophomore and two and a half years younger, and one of the reasons Thomas wasn’t drafted was because his much younger teammate looked so much better (about 2.5 ypc better, more than double yards per reception). Add to this the fact he missed most of last season after being injured when at full speed he lowered his shoulder into a Ray Lewis hit and got hammered by the wrong guy. He’s still learning how to block, he is still really just learning how to run at the NFL level with relatively little running experience in his muscle memory. I’m not surprised people have doubts because they really couldn’t give a rat’s ass that he’s young and inexperienced, he’s a professional and should be expected to produce. But the reality is that he’s going to be here for four more years and IMO he will have a couple 1,000-yard seasons in the bank when we negotiate his next contract. Of course, as we’ve seen with Willie Parker, being a productive runner doesn’t mean he will be applauded for it. You’re right, 2009 will be a telling year for Mendenhall and the running game. I think it will tell us that a lot of pixels were wasted worrying about him.

Yeah good point
Its still wayyy too early to call. the Preseason doesnt mean shit, and the last year was hardly anything.
But yes I’d spooge if we had Matt Forte
That’s my only concern. Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton (who I was CERTAIN would be the next Amos Zereoue), and even Kevin Smith have done very well for themselves thus far in their careers. That’s not to say Mendenhall can’t turn it around and run over Ray Lewis when next they meet, maybe break Lewis’ shoulder as a bit of retribution, but in the absence of proof that it will happen, I have proof that, at least for one season, the four aforementioned backs were anywhere from good to amazing. If you were to grade Mendenhall, he’d receive an incomplete.
I’m not as optimistic on Mendenhall as some, but neither am I as pessimistic as others. Gun to my head I’d predict he’d not be our franchise back, but lacking that scenario I’ll certainly give him the benefit of the doubt to prove that he is every bit the back he was drafted to be.

Maybe a hint on Mendenhall's role
A USA Today story http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/steelers/2009-08-27-steelers-first-rounders_N.htm has some interesting comments by Kirby Wilson on Mendenhall: "Running backs coach Kirby Wilson says Mendenhall has shown good burst, especially between the tackles, and soft hands, both attributes that make him a perfect complement to starter Willie Parker.
“Rashard is working really hard. He’s picked up the offense now, and he’s starting to develop his own style and identity as a runner in this league,” says Wilson, who “absolutely” envisions Mendenhall taking over as the third-down back. “I’m pleased with his progress.”
There are a lot of ways you can look at those comments, which are pretty similar to what some of the Mendenhall defenders here have been saying, but if taken at face value they show the Steelers view Mendenhall as a developing back and they’re happy with his development. Reading between the lines it’s less than a ringing endorsement, but there’s an intriguing hint about Mendenhall being the third-down back. Moore was banged up at the end of last year and got very few touches after Parker came back. Eight months later he is again bothered by nagging injuries and hasn’t dressed in preseason or taken many snaps in practices. So two options to consider: 1. Even if Moore is healthy, Mendenhall could start the season as the designated third-down back, perhaps subbing for Parker once in a while to give him a break. 2. If Moore is not healthy, there might be a spot on the game roster for Logan as No. 3 RB/KR or Redman

And Slaton
played near Pittsburgh at WVU.
The FO KNEW that guy was good, but took Mendenhall instead. I’m still wondering why…..
Because once upon a time that same front office drafted Amos Zereoue out of West Virginia.

Rice
I really liked him in college and thought he would be a great pickup for us. I was really bummed when Ravens drafted him in 2nd round.
I hate to say it and I hope I’m wrong but Rice is a keeper and RM is…well…disappointing to put in nicely
The Steelers Police Their Own!
If he continues to miss blocking assignments and keep running scared, blatantly obvious to his teammates, his greatest concern will not be playing time but in answering to Hines Ward and James Harrison.
mind already made up
not really lifer ,, in fact i’m a little shocked cause after looking at his highlite tapesagain before camp ., i thought wow this guy could be great,,,,,i was almost ready to go out on the limb a throw out that he would be a phenom, one that makes us a devistating offense,, an offense that could win without ben if it had to and i was willing to wait,,,,but i never saw or imagined that he could hate contact, that could be debilitating.
But why say “Happy to see Mendy do nothin”? Doing nothing hardly describes how he ran, and I don’t know why any fan would be happy even if that was the case. I disagree with about 90 per cent of the criticism on this post. He’s had a number of good runs, including a hard driving short-yardage carry vs. Arizona, and had a better performance in preseason Game 2 than in preseason Game 1. He’s still thinking too much rather than letting his instincts take over but he’s headed in the right direction. There’s no doubt in my mind he will make a major contribution this year.

I think the trap we all fall into is...
That these are “highlight” tapes. There is very few lowlight tapes, and we all know that highlights are chosen because they’re him at his best. They do not prove consistency and are a poor measure of actual talent. It’s easy to get excited about any player with a highlight tape, because we tend to think “Holy sh_, this kid’s a freak” and immediately expect that every play (okay, maybe not every play, I’m generalizing). When he doesn’t put up highlight after highlight runs, he’s thought of as a bust or near bust. Remember, Rashard didn’t play at Illinois until his junior year very much because Pierre Thomas kept him of the field with his play. He is young, has limited experience, and hasn’t played in close to a year. He has maybe 4 games worth of actual NFL action. Patience, when he looks terrible getting 10 or so carries in a game that matters a few weeks in a row then worry.

you speak wisdom nysf4,but i see other things . i pulled frank da tanks highlite stuff before camp and i’m not at all surprised he’s not living up to the hype. the reason ‘s not worthy of the boredom required to expain it. and you can’t deny redmonds bottom line goal line sucess both as reported from camp and seen in the 2 games,,,,,,,(and thats probably all we need care about) within a half yard either side of the goal line,,, but roll your your game tape and pull his highlites and youll see a back who stands more straight up than any back i’ve ever seen and jumps around like it was flag football, saturday night he twice turned his back to a tackler before he did a spin move that isaw in his highlites………i’m affraid the guys gonna get parralized
Agreed...
I have to ask… Is it Steel’s Wine or Steel Swine? Just curious.
I feel the exact same way about Tank as I do Redman. I actually responded, in my usual smart ass way, to just this topic in the six pack today. We all fall victim to it. Highlight-itis I guess. I think both can be good, even better than just good, but I am not willing to crown anybody anything. I learned that from Denny Green. I want them to earn it before we all start drooling all over these guys. I want to see more Redman, early on against 1st stringers, same for Tank. If they prove they can do it, they earn my respect and fan-dom, but until then it’s all hopes and wishes as far as I’m concerned. The classic realist, I look more pesimistic most of the time.

ancient mendy writings
reading this again, "lifer “was most correct…..but i’ll defend my comments( above )that watching his highlites, i thought he could be something special,,,,,,or complete our becoming a” devistating offence."
thats what i was looking for in mendy’s highlites,,,,another something to make us dynamic,,,complete….
i expected the o-line would get one step better, and that ben would continue toward the hall, maybe even to the hall of the hall,,,,,, and our recievers are unique and becoming the true " masters of YAK. and downfield blocking.
but mendy had to take 2 steps forward cause he lost a yr. i saw in his highlites ability that could move 3 steps forward,,,,,,,,i was dissapointed with what i saw in his pre season. i didn’t think he could do preseason with a complacency like12 yr veteran.
bottom line ,i thought we were a dynamic running back short of becoming an offence now as dominating and ledgendary as our defence was in the seventies
