BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- People of Walmart Edition
IX-Bruce Arians receives more flack than probably any coordinator that I can think of in recent Steeler memory. Fans and even some of the media have called for his head on different occasions and despite helping the Steelers win their most recent Super Bowl, many fans still wanted Arians fired. The NYTimes Fifth Down blog breaks down the Steelers current offense which according to them is just really a spawn on the offense that was created all the way back in the days of Mike Mularkey.
X-Unless Ben Roethlisberger has a major setback today or tomorrow he is expecting to play at least a half in Saturday's match-up against the Bills, even though his leg is not yet 100% according to him. Make sure to check back to BTSC on Saturday evening for the live thread to discuss the game with other members of Steeler Nation.
XIII-This one is completely non-Steeler related but it is probably the funniest website I have seen in a while so you might want to give it a try. The website is "People of Walmart" and it is just random pictures of the gross specimens of human behavior that are in and or around a Walmart.
XIV-The Steelers beat the Ravens three times last season and the Ravens have made it clear that they have their sights set on Pittsburgh this season. Earlier in the offseason Joe Flacco talked about his desire to beat the Steelers and Terrell Suggs was photgraphed wearing a t-shirt that said "You Bet Your Sweet Ass I Hate The Steelers." Now Frank Walker who is only known for one reason by Steeler fans and that is because he spit in Mitch Berger's mouth last season, was seen around the Raven's facility with his own shirt. Check out Mondesi's House for more details.
XL-Lawrence Timmons posted a new blog at his website today after a conversation with Mike Tomlin. Timmons really seems to say all the right things even though he has had some problems with the run game so far this preseason. (As pointed out by Post Game Heroes). His respect for Tomlin is immense and after reading about how Tomlin calls all his players just to see how they are doing and what he can help them with outside of football, it certainly makes you realize what the Rooney's saw in him.
XLIII-I encourage all of you to go over to Pittsburgh Sports and Mini-Ponnies and check out his new segment "Great Moments is Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merchandise." Not only do I encourage you to check out the segment but also to contribute to the fun by submitting your own merchandise. I have a few that I am taking pictures of this week.
P.S.- Help a friend win running shoes by voting for "Stabbing Sole" here in this contest. She was winning up until today. DO IT!

One Play
The link in IX is defending Arians it seems on the one play. No doubt it turned out fantastic, but it’s only one play.
I’m going into this season with an open mind, though. All things screwed up by Arians have been forgotten.
When I say who dey, you say we dey.

Arians, who a few years ago was being hailed as a future guru and head coach in the league
I don’t remember that, but I can only hope someone else buys it.

Temple University
He was hired as the savior to turn the program around. Most miserable three or four seasons they ever had and he’s one of the reasons why.
Hell, the Garden State Bowl (‘79) was at least a post season game, and they didn’t come close in his few years in charge, nor since.

Speaking of Walmart...
Never buy any of those “jerseys” they have. They are an insult to fandom. The Walmart jerseys are the ones with the logo on the sleeve, instead of the triple stripe. They bear little resemblance to the actual jersey and if you see a grown man at a game wearing one, he deserves to be promptly punched in the face.

Ya, not sure what is happening with their site…it was working fine when I published the six-pack, but now it isn’t working…bad timing

Bruce Arians
Arians suffers by comparison to the Steelers’ former offensive guru Ken Whisenhunt. Since Arians took over, the Steelers have had lots of trouble with their Red Zone offense, often settling for FGs or getting no points when they should be scoring TDs.
This is a key reason why, even though they won another Super Bowl, the Steelers had lots of trouble putting teams away in the second half in 2008. They beat the Ravens twice by a combined total of only 7 points. They beat the Browns once by 4 points and the Chargers by only 1 point. And just as they had done throughout the regular season, the Steelers allowed the Cardinals to hang in there and almost beat them in the big game. Harrison’s 100-yd interception return accounted for at least a 10-point swing, so until the final drive, we didn’t exactly dazzle the Cards with offense.
Pay close attention to the predictable, unimaginative play selection you’ll see whenever the Steelers get inside the 20. Then you’ll appreciate what people say about Arians. They’d be better off to just let Ben call all of the plays.

Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch
Great topic. My 86 year old grandmother will sometimes buy hilarious homemade stuff at craft fairs in Westmoreland County. Her most recent find was a 12-inch ceramic kewpie doll wearing a Steelers helmet and wearing a #7 jersey.
As a kid I was really embarrassed by this stuff. Now I’m kind of in awe of it. You just think, geez, where else but in western PA would anybody buy or sell this stuff?
I also have some excellent homemade Steeler dog collars that my dogs wore with pride throughout the XL season. No irony whatsoever, those things were flat awesome.

Stillers Dog!
Hey, our dog wears his Steelers scarf with pride!!! He doesn’t want you to take it off, and when you hold it up for him, he walks his head right in it. He knows which team to root for!!!
