Another Look at the Schedule
I was looking at this year's schedule, and a few things occurred to me. First, the schedule is front-loaded; we will make or miss the playoffs in the first 8 weeks. Secondly, there is one distinct trap game on our schedule.
After the jump, take a look at the schedule, and tell me what you see.
Here's the 2009-2010 schedule:
| 1 | Thu, Sep 10 | Tennessee | 8:30 pm | NBC | |
| 2 | Sun, Sep 20 | at Chicago | 4:15 pm | CBS | |
| 3 | Sun, Sep 27 | at Cincinnati | 4:15 pm | CBS | |
| 4 | Sun, Oct 4 | San Diego | 8:20 pm | NBC | |
| 5 | Sun, Oct 11 | at Detroit | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 6 | Sun, Oct 18 | Cleveland | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 7 | Sun, Oct 25 | Minnesota | 1:00 pm | FOX | |
| 8 | -- | bye | -- | -- | -- |
| 9 | Mon, Nov 9 | at Denver | 8:30 pm | ESPN | |
| 10 | Sun, Nov 15 | Cincinnati | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 11 | Sun, Nov 22 | at Kansas City | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 12 | Sun, Nov 29 | at Baltimore | 8:20 pm | NBC | |
| 13 | Sun, Dec 6 | Oakland | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 14 | Thu, Dec 10 | at Cleveland | 8:20 pm | NFL | |
| 15 | Sun, Dec 20 | Green Bay | 1:00 pm | FOX | |
| 16 | Sun, Dec 27 | Baltimore | 1:00 pm | CBS | |
| 17 | Sun, Jan 3 | at Miami |
We've got 5 scary teams on the scedule: Tennessee, Chicago, San Diego, Minnesota and Baltimore. Of those 5, only the Baltimore games come in the second half of the season. In other words, our season will be determined by the first 8 weeks. If we start fast, and go at least 2-2 against Tennessee, Chicago, San Diego and Minnesota, then our chances to make the playoffs look good. Conversely, if we start slow, and drop a game that we should win, against Cleveland or Denver for instance, then making the playoffs could be tough.
Why?
Because we play Baltimore twice in the second half of the season. They're the only really threatening opponent in the second half, and although some have argued that they will struggle this year, they always play hard against the Steelers. In other words, if we lose 3 or 4 games in the first 9 weeks, then the Ravens will have the opportunity to keep us out of the playoffs, and you can bet that will be a motivator.
What else does the schedule show us?
Trap game December 10th at Cleveland. Short week against an underrated divisional opponent. You can bet that I have that game circled in red ink.
There are also a few opponents who could surprise us. In this category, I see Miami, Green Bay and Kansas City.
Anyway, if I had to guess at our losses, I'd take Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore and Oakland (upset, like last time).
What do you think about our schedule, and who do you see us losing to? Do you think that any of our divisional opponents will be significantly different from last year?

Oakland
Everytime I think of that Oakland game I want to vomit. Don’t think that will happen again but that is a prime example of “any given Sunday.”
I can see a split this year with Baltimore and a loss at Miami in week 17 only if we are resting starters for the playoffs, which Coach Tomlin has shown a reluctance to do. Now, that produces a record of 14-2. Can’t really see that happening either so I’d look to that San Diego game 10/4. After two tough defeats by the Steelers last year and I think San Diego will be amped enough to pull it out at Heinz, probably like 11-10 or something. I’m liking 13-3.
I’ll be in the house 10/25 for the Vikings game going into the bye. That should be a good one, if the Vikes get decent play at QB that is. Either way, I’m sure its going to be a heavy dose of A. Peterson. Should be interesting.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games
"Everytime I think of that Oakland game I want to vomit"
ditto.
It’s right up there with the playoff losses to Tennessee in 2002, and Patriots in 2004… obviously those were heartbreakers, but thinking of any of them makes me nauseous!
Houston Texans
did the same thing to the Tommy led Steelers a couple of years ago to.

Schedule
I never buy into “strength of schedule”. It’s the NFL, all you can do and must do, is take the season week by week.
Easy schedule? Tenn, Chicago, SD 3 out of first 4…wow, not easy.
SOS is crap
Its all based on last year. And since teams in the NFL change more rapidly than any other sport…its really irrelevant.

Losing to Oakland at home?
That’s tough to imagine unless there is a repeat of the multiple turnovers and big plays that went against the Steelers a few years ago in Oakland.
I don’t see a single scary game on the schedule. I see four games against teams that could beat us even if we play fairly well: San Diego, Tennessee and Baltimore. Three of those games are at home. The Steelers will likely be the favorite in each of those games. The Miami game will depend on the playoff or bye scenario. KC might be a surprise upset loss. They have a QB, good receivers and an improving O-line for a new head coach who was a good offensive coordinator and will already be looking forward to that game. Their new 3-4 defense might be starting to come together in the second half. It’s close to being as easy a schedule as can be imagined in the parity era, just as last year’s was about as tough a schedule as you could imagine. I doubt the Steelers players will fall into the trap of taking any opponent lightly. As far as the playoffs go, even a relatively poor first half (5-3) can be overcome by second-half games against Baltimore. Even a good first half could be sidetracked by second-half losses to Baltimore. Adds up to the division race being decided by what happens in the second half. I think we cruise to a division title and nothing less than a 13-3 record. I’m predicting 14-2. I’m also predicting a SB win, a coach of the year award for MT, winning a lottery and a wild weekend in St. Kitts with Cameron Diaz. These predictions and $3 might get you a frappuccino at Starbucks.
Thanks
I just got thrown out of Starbucks

LOL, sorry chewie
But I did say “might”. Thanks for the laugh. The weekend with Cameron Diaz is looking iffy too.

I see
us losing at Chicago, at Baltimore and either Green Bay or Miami. 13-3

I really don't think Chi-town can win
Too early in the season for the offense to gel, and the defense is missing too many pieces. I see the Steelers romping this game in honor of my wedding the day before which will cause me to not get to watch. Sigh…

That’s one cold-hearted fiancee you have.
Willie Colon doesn’t get flagged because he has long arms; he gets flagged because he sucks. - cliff harris is still a punk!
We will be en-route to Athens, Greece at the time
So there are far worse things that could happen. But if there was some way that I could do both? That would be a wedding present indeed.

I will be absolutely shocked at anything less than 13-3
Barring injury to the nucleus of the team of course.
Tenn “could” be a loss but i just don’t see it happening.
There are only 3 games that scare me: San Diego, @ Baltimore and i have a bad feeling about the game @ Cincy.
early schedule helps
Outside of Baltimore, I think the first 4 games are the only seriously tough matchups. Since we are carrying minimal change over from last year’s starting line up and these first teams are, it’s good timing. I’d rather see Cutler and Palmer early before they have a chance to settle in., particularly as they are road games. I’d rather deal with the Titans while we still have last year in mind. And my pick for most likely loss is San Diego. They ended well last year and they’ve gotta have a lot of pent up frustration, and Merriman is back and Rivers seems to have us in his sights.
Our fiercest opponets seem to be within our own conference. I don’t see any of the NFC matchups as an issue and same with the rest of the AFC West. I’d go with 13 – 3 also, loss to SD, Balt, and one random (or last game of the season)
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Make the playoffs?
Are you joking? These are the Super Bowl champs. This schedule is much easier than last year. The Steelers have most of the players back PLUS Rashard Mendenhall and Daniel Sepulveda. Have some faith in the team. I see a 12-4 season here.
Never a given
Remember the 2006 season? We returned a lot of starters then too. Every year in the NFL is a dog fight and every year it takes a certain amount of luck to get to the playoffs.
(and yes I realize that we had Ben’s motor cycle accident, but the standards of expectation do not change).

Im calling
team of the decade this year. Undefeated season and SB win! To do what pansies couldnt! A guy can wish anyways. And if we end up not making the playoffs I’ll go to a central location and let you all wail on my face for 5 minutes each, for jinxing us. If I prove to be right however, I will go to the same location and let you all kiss my replica superbowl ring I will buy!
I see 12-4 at least
13-3 may be more likely, but I’ll hedge my bets for now. I foresee a split with Baltimore, a loss in Miami due to our resting of starters, and maybe SD and @ KC for the final 2 losses.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

What I wonder
Is how good the D could be this year. Seriously, how good? If they’re lucky at all with injuries this D could be all-time good. Add into that the fact that we have robo-punter back and we’re looking at teams not getting gifted startng position like they were last year.
It’s entirely homerific of me to think this way, but I don’t know how you attack this defense as an offensive coordinator. What I read about the 76 defense rings in my ears. We can rush 4 every time and almost every guy can beat a single blocker. You want to single Deebo? Good luck. Woodley? I doubt it. Timmons and Farrior on an X blitz? Aaron Smith? Choose your poison.
I hope that Arians can see it, and play to that strength. We can be a ball control team again. That doesn’t mean 3 yards and a cloud of dust, it means smart consistent passing with a good mix of rushing. Sigh, please surprise me BA.
