Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Was anyone surprised by any game in week one?

OK, everyone is happy to have the NFL back... me too.. but after the Monday games are in the books, I am feeling kind of deflated.

Yes... I was surprised to see KC put up a fight against Baltimore. I was hoping for a Raiders and/or Bills victory, but they hung in just enough to get your hopes up, and then reverted to  their losing ways...

Anyway... When the dust clears, and I look at every team that won, and every team that lost... was anyone surprised by any of it? Take the spread out of the picture... just wins and losses.

Did any team's loss (or victory) surprise anyone? That was about as predictible a week as I have ever seen...

Not really surprised by any one game

Jets sure looked more impressive than I thought they would be against Houston. Darrelle Revis had himself a hell of a game and the Texans couldnt answer. Shows exactly why you shouldnt build your offense so that it relies on one individual QB – WR connection

Anyways, no real winners were surprises, although I love to see the “Any Given Sunday” mentality in full swing.

Raiders, Chiefs, Bills, Redskins were all supposed to lay down to their respective opponents according to the “experts”. But each one of them very nearly ground out impressive wins, and with a bit of luck or top two inches, a couple of them really shouldve won those games

Football season…..its been too long, we hardly knew ya

Niner's-Cards

I thought the defending NFC champs would put up a better showing against Shaun Hill (WHO??) and the #3 NFC West whipping boys, ranked (by me) right above the sad sack Rams.

Thank you drive through...

I was surprised by that, too

Definetly thought the Cards would win….also very surprised no one is talking about the touchdown that the refs STOLE from the Raiders….without a doubt a TD….please don’t anyone tell me the rule, because that rule had NOTHING to do with that play….both feet were down and the reciever had control….the Raiders had to settle for the FG instead, and lost by 4….wonder if Phillip Rivers would have been so confident down by 7 instead of 3….

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Sep 16, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The rule does apply here

Not be contrarian, and I don’t agree with the rule. But, the rule is that if a receiver falls down in the process of catching a ball, he must maintain possession throughout. At the end, it looked like he thought the play was over and let go of the ball for a second, but unfortunately for him, it was at the end of his falling down after catching the ball. The ball clearly fell out of his hand and rested on the ground for a moment.

no doubter

Touchdown….I loved that the announcers—mostly Steve Young—all agreed that it was a bad call….the rule is pathetic and didn’t apply IMO….not trying to argue with you Wolfpack, just don’t agree that the rule applied there….kind of like the tuck rule—ridiculous

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Sep 16, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Bad rule, agreed there

But, that rule applies anywhere on the field. The first time I saw that happen was a couple of years ago, and a player caught the ball in the endzone and, I believe, fell to one knee on the way falling down. He clearly had possession of the ball with a knee down, but because he was in the process of falling after a catch, it ended up being ruled incomplete because he lost it when he hit the ground.

They changed the rule, because until recently, that was a catch.

But, anyway, that’s the rule. The receiver must maintain possession throughout the falling process. Basically, he has to get up with the ball having never left his possession if he was falling in the process of catching, even if he catches the ball and a split-second later the defender knocks him down, which is about what happened on this play.

But if you were an official

you’d get downgraded for missing it. In this one, blame the NFL rules committee. The officials just did what they were told.

agreed--begrudgingly

they should change the rule after the season

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Sep 16, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Funny thing is

If you cross the goal line and fumble hitting the ground it’s a TD because possesion in the goal means the play is over.
Two feet down and a football move in the endzone does not end the play. A little contradictory but the refs did not screw up, kind of a tuck rule type of thing.

by SNW on Sep 16, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I think their argument is that if you are falling in the act of catching, you haven’t made a football move. If a guys catches the ball standing still in the endzone, there is no question unless he’s knocked down right after. The way I’ve heard Mike Perrera (sp?) explain it is that they don’t want what they call “a cheap fumble.” Since the old argument is that the ground can’t cause a fumble, if a player catches a pass and then immediately falls, with the ground knocking it out, he never had possession.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Sep 16, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

which brings to mind

the Holmes catch in the playoffs last year, where he caught it over the middle took 2 steps as he was hit (football move?) then went to the ground, ground causes him to drop it. Those 2-3 steps don’t count? We challenged the spot looking for a TD, the other team challenged the catch, and they won. He had to ball, took two steps went down, I didnt see it as defender taking him to the ground rule applying because he made a “football move” Guess I was wrong though.

by Steelde#1 on Sep 16, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I thought he did make a football move and the ball crossed the plane

But, they saw it differently.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Sep 16, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

agree

Would have been nice to see the Raiders win(kind of funny sounding isn’t it) if this exact same play happens at the 50yd. line it isn’t even a discussion over whether it was a catch or not. Incomplete go hudle up. I get that it was in the end zone and the ball just needs to cross but you still have to catch the ball without the ground knocking it loose, he didn’t do that and falling is not a football move. If that play had happened against us everyone would be saying no doubt it was incomplete great rule. As long as it is the same for everyone I don’t have any problems with the rule as it is written.

by DarinS on Sep 16, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the time of the hit is what matters.

Get hit while “catching” the ball or get his after “catching” the ball makes all the diffence.

by SNW on Sep 16, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems that

when in the end zone not much else matters though. Picture a back going up over the top, once the ball is across the line it’s at TD right? He had 2 feet down AND his hip/butt. I don’t know the rule book but I don’t see that could even matter if it’s a fumble if he had control with two feet and/or hip on the turf.

Oh yeah, I can’t stand Rivers, what a punk.

by jharmon64 on Sep 16, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

But a back

has already established possession. The rule for a reception is that the receiver must establish and maintain possession while he’s falling and never lose possession until the play is called over.

99 per cent of Cardinals fans are in shock

I was not impressed with the Cardinals in preseason but to lose their home opener to a division rival with a retread QB and no running game that day has to be considered a major upset . Warner looks like he needs a walker to get around.

Not many surprising results beyond the Arizona-SF game and perhaps Houston-Jets, but a lot of allegedly good teams looked mediocre in victory and a lot of allegedly bad teams were respectable in defeat. NFL socialism is alive and well.

I think they Jets are a lot better than people give them credit

I see them sliding in at #2 behind the Pats in the division. Possible WC if things work their way.

Not Sure

If I was more suprised by how competent the Bills looked or how rusty Brady looked…but I guess that was to be expected. I think the Pats achilles heel this year is their D.

Jemarcus Russel is the worst QB in pro football. UGH. He couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn against the Chargers…if he throws better they win going away.

not saying they will be world beaters

but they’ll finish second in that division….Orton finished strong with the Bears last year and is not that bad really….remember, he had shitty recievers in Chi-town….Denver had alot of defensive problems—and injuries—last year, they will be much better IMO

by SteelerStuckintheSouth on Sep 16, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Finishing second in that division does not mean much, with Oakland and the Chiefs pulling up the rear. It is not that far-fetched to see Denver finishing last though. Look at their schedule. After Cleveland it is:

Dallas
NE
Bolts
Ravens
Steelers
Wash
Bolts
Giants

Then their last 5 games have the Colts and Eagles mixed in. Seems like a double digit loss team to me.

"Look at their schedule"

you think that’s bad, I just looked at the Bucs’ schedule. Damn it’s nasty. They play the NFC East and the AFC East (AFCE deeper than expected this year it appears), they get Seattle from the NFC West, the Saints and the Falcons look good, AND they have to go to London to play the Pats!

I scanned the schedule and I’m not seeing any wins. Maybe the Panthers at home?

A few things caught my attention

Somehow, someway the browns were able to be in the lead at half! But come the second half the brownie hounds realized, “Hey, we are the browns” and therefore crumbled into a million pieces!

I found myself rooting for the Raiders and Bills very staunchly, I about puked when the Bills fumbled the ball and watch them give the game to the New England Pansies! Gosh I cannot stand that team!

Lastly, I really liked seeing the Browns get beat, the Bengals get beat even more and the Ravens to struggle AT HOME against the Mighty Chefs, err… I mean Chiefs!

by Light Dweller on Sep 16, 2009 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with Blitz….I was surprised how bad the Texans looked and how good the Jets looked….

I wasn’t surprised by San Fransisco at all, in fact that was my upset pick.

I also was surprised by the Bengals..I expected them to come out and beat down the Broncos….I was also praying for it to happen for the sake of my fantasy football chances this season.

Surprises

Jets defense – shutout on the road against a good offense. Ryan already has made an impact with that defense. If Sanchez can manage their games, the Jets could challenge.

Bengals offense – I thought they would put up 20+ at home against Denver. Palmer wasn’t helped by all the dropped passes (3 by Coles).

Raider defense – Seymour makes them a lot better. If they had a QB they would be downright dangerous.

Gotta go Jets-Texans

I didn’t necessarily buy into the Texans hype about the playoffs earlier but they have been 500 for a few years, been drafting pretty well and they looked like dogs on Sunday. Contrarily, the Jets exceeded my expectations for a rookie QB on the road with a new head coach. They looked pretty darn good.

Did not expect the Panthers to look like the Rams on Sunday either. Most of the other games went pretty much as expected.

by jharmon64 on Sep 16, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

The biggest shocker, to me, had to be the Bills and Patriots. Despite the result, I was stunned at Buffalo’s ability to keep the Patriot passing game playing dink-and-dunk for about 57 minutes. Even more shocking was how ineffective the Patriots front seven were against an offensive line with 2 rookies and another first time starter. Sure Seymour was traded, but I didn’t expect that line to drop off that much without him.
