lawrence timmons vs jerod mayo

just wondering...since both are key to their defense and both are out how are they compared to each other? just curious because everyone seems to anoint jerod as the best new inside linebacker in the past 5 years.  do you guys agree?  I always thought lawrence timmons was the new guy.  the guy who everyone is in awe off.   Both were first round picks if I'm correct.  Although mayo did win rookie of the year.

When people talk about young LB’s they basically see how many tackles he has and base their judgement off that. Mayo is a very solid LB and polished for a second year guy. He is a good athlete, although I don’t think he’s as functionally fast as Timmons. Timmons is an incredible athlete, but he’s young and raw, having only had one year as a starter in college. He needs more experience before he’ll be a great football player, but the talent is there.

As far as the best young LB’s in the game, it’s hard to beat Patrick Willis who really brings everything – strength, athleticism, instincts – to the table. Although he hasn’t proven anything yet, I’m also a big believer in Aaron Curry.

Way too early

Timmons and Mayo are way too early into their careers to make this assessment. The media loves to annoted everyone as “the greatest _ in the game” after a couple of good games. It may be really tough to judge them against each other though due to the vast differences in their styles and defensive schemes. The Pats defense is really built to allow Mayo a ton of room to fly sideline to sideline, while I envision Timmons being used all over the field (when he’s finally healthy and at LeBeau’s complete disposal).

It’s a great question and will be fun to watch play out the next 5-7 years. I agree with BadMaafala that Willis and Curry are also fantastic young LBs poised for big things.

Dont you back sass!

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

Agreed

Sorry Steeler fans, but Timmons is no where near as good at tackling as Mayo, and while he flies to the ball, he disappears in blocking.

For right now Mayo, who is younger than Timmons is better. If Mayo has maxed out his talent and Timmons gets better I can see Timmons being better at some point, but Mayo is better now.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 17, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Timmons younger than Mayo

Timmons is still a kid learning how to play a new position for him in the NFL after just one year as a starter at OLB in college. Mayo is a more polished player who is playing the same position in a 4-3 he played his final year of college. It’s no coincidence Mayo is a more polished player at this point. I’d rather have Timmons, I’m sure Patriots fans would rather have Mayo.

by steeler.lifer on Sep 17, 2009 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah had that reversed, I’d still take Mayo right now as the better player, Timmons shows signs of being great, but he hasn’t proven anything yet.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 17, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Timmons hands down

I won’t take anything away from Mayo because he definately looks like a force at LB for years, however, I don’t see anybody in the league that looks to have everything that TImmons has. He is an excellent pass rusher but that isn’t even his biggest strength. He is rock solid when it comes to covering backs and tight ends and even some wide receivers. He also can hit like Kendrell Bell but unlike Bell, Timmons has some brains. As great as Willis is and Mayo is becoming, neither of them will be on par with Timmons. He is going to be the next great Steeler LB.

Homer alert!

Let’s wait to see him start for a year (minus a couple of games apparently) before we wet ourselves, OK?

Mayo vs Timmons?

Patrick WIllis, SF. Definitely the best young linebacker in the game, IMO.

I was just flabbergasted by the fact that MaLoR and I agree on something. Well other than the fact the Steelers are the best team in the NFL. (Just admit it already MaLoR, we all know, it’s okay, you’re with friends now.)

That's a big statement

I think that Willis is on his way to that status, but he needs to do more to be mentioned with the likes of Lewis, Harrison, Ware, Farrior, Suggs, Urlacher, etc…

This just in!

wbztv.com says

Mayo sprained the medial collateral ligament in the first quarter of Monday night’s 25-24 win over the Buffalo Bills and could miss up to eight weeks, the Boston Globe reported.

So who’s the better football player RIGHT NOW? I’ll bet Timmons could limp a little better on his ankle than Mayo could on his knee.
