Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

2008 2nd round draft pick Limas Sweed has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Chicago. Sweed will be replaced by Veteran Shaun McDonald who did not suit up during Week 1.

This really opens up the door for Mike Wallace to show we he can do.

The injuries are piling on early, aren’t they?

Sweed's no big deal yet

but getting Troy and Timmons back are high priority. Thankfully, no season ending injuries.

True

I forgot about that. I don’t think that Essex or Legursky are large drop-offs, though, compared to Troy to Carter. So far, Fox doesn’t seem like a larger drop off from Foote, so what we’re missing there with Timmons hurt is the closing speed on some speedy TEs and third down backs.

shame

We have yet to see Sweed improve on his nice preseason……

but like you said, it gives Wallace a chance to shine now.

by shleeve on Sep 18, 2009 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Want to see the speed.

Want to see him turn loose in man coverage and just fly. He either gets a nice step or the middle opens up nicely for Hines and Tone. Win win I believe is the term.

+1

It even seems to be jumping to teams we are going to play against. The bears have really gotten hit hard by this new Ursa strain.

"The standard of expectations doesn't change"

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see McDonald’s experience benefit the Steelers on Sunday. Reminds me of Cedric. Perhaps he’ll justify dressing 5-wides on Sundays for the new BFG.

The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

by chewiesteeler on Sep 18, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

you're right McDonald has experience against the bears, twice a year for a few years

Maybe that will be helpful

Not much dropoff with McDonald

I am confident with any combination of McDonald, Wallace, and Sweed in the #3 and #4 receiver slots. This injury is not a big problem, given our depth at WR.

by Steelin on Sep 18, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

no worries

McDonald is actually quite a good possession receiver and a poor mans Welker. Wallace can go deep and McDonald with his good hands, underneath.

The other thing I like to see is internal competition. Hopefully if McDonald and Wallace play well it pushes Sweed. This sort of thing makes teams better, at least in my estimation.

McDonald

Kind of reminds you of Hines Ward.

Welker

I agree with Welker comparison. Quick short routes across the middle. Won’t be surprised if this is his chance to shine.

McDonald takes short routes allows Holmes to run deep. Wallace runs deep, Holmes crosses short. Either works.

I think he's been so overlooked

I mean all his career he’s been stuck with the trash bin of Detroit QB’s and fellow teammates. Here he has a chance to really just play ball. And I think he will without a hitch.

I’m ok with Sweed on the bench having seen Wallace play so far.

Wallace

I was really impressed with wallace what a combination of hands and speed. This kid could be something special. I know its hard to tell after only one game but I remember how far Sweed was after his first game last year and this kid is farther. I guess only time will tell I was just wondering if wallace would have dropped that TD pass against the Ravens in the AFCCG? unfortunately we will never know.

Guys, I'm telling you

Limas is going to get 2000 receiving yards this season!

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.
