And if we don't go to Miami

I'm not a pessimistic person. I know damn well that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be team of the decade as they repeat as SB Champions. But it is any given Sunday. And dreams don't always come true. So I'm asking BTSC a strange question that should spark some talk. If the Steelers don't go all the way who would you want to see be crowned? For refinement sakes lets leave out the power houses and talk struggling franchises. No Pats, Giants, Colts, Cowboys (not like you would,) EaglesRavens, or any other team that is a projected post season contender.

Star-divide

Think about which teams are under new management (KC), coaches (SF) or any new additions you like. Who would you like to see rise from the rubble of last year and make a run at it all if we (Pitt) don't go?  I like the chances of SF myself. Mike Singletary is second to Tomlin in my opinion as motivational head coach. They had a decent draft and seem to be coming together as a team. They have a strong work ethic that comes with having a stud like Singletary run a team. Maybe you like Detroit with Foote trying to make an impact on a struggling defense. Or the Cinderella story of Atlanta if they can keep the dream alive. So let me know who you would want to see. Oh and one more thing. If anyone picks the Browns or Bengals they are here by removed from BTSC.... Just kidding.... ;)

I can’t say that I would prefer for any other team to win purely out of warm fuzzy feelings for that team. But it would be an awfully sweet big middle finger to their former #4 if the Pack won it all this year.

It would

Brett’s pencil thin lips would quiver as he started to cry on TV after GB whooped him. Not that I have any opinion on Brett but man did his arm look good on Monday night

If I had to choose....

I guess I would pick the Texans. They haven’t been around long enough to have bothered me in any way. I don’t hate them or hold anything against them. I guess you could say “I nothing them.” So in the unthinkable event that the Steelers don’t get to, and win, the Super Bowl my pick would be the hapless Texans, the most average team I’ve seen in a long time. Seriously, if they do better than the typical 8-8 I will be really shocked.

by big_jay71 on Sep 2, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, the Texans would be interesting

Living in San Antonio, it would be sweet to see the Cowgirl fans watch the Texans win a Super Bowl.

Also, I’d say the Falcons since my lady’s brother is a huge Falcons fan. That would certainly make him happy.

And, since I’ve always had a soft spot for the Dolphins for some reason, I’d say them.

I might have to agree with the Texans

I’ve always liked them for the few years they’ve been in the league, mainly because I like their uniforms.

So if not us then they are an ok choice. Falcons also aren’t that bad of one.
And since I live in N.C. I guess the Panthers would be cool with me too.

by shleeve on Sep 2, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure if they count under super powers but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Chargers win if the Steelers can’t. LT is a good guy and deserves one ring before he retires. If they are considered too good I wouldn’t mind seeing the Bills win.

Interesting topic...

Here’s my take:

While I know you said that we can’t include the projected contenders, of the contenders I would most like to see the Raven’s win. I hate the Ravens, but I respect their football mentality, they play the game more like the Steelers than anyone (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery), and I’d like to keep the Lombardi in the AFC North.

More on par with your question: The Falcons. Talk about a story of redemption. From the whole Vick saga, with Arthur Blank showing that he’s one of the classiest owners in the league, to the uprising of Matt Ryan, and the new life of Michael Turner…I think that would be cool to see.

I too, wouldn’t mind the Ravens winning it…….oddly enough. So long as their fans don’t act like jackasses because of it.

Da Bears

By process of elimination more than love of the team, I came up with Chicago.

It starts with Lovie Smith (how can you not like a footballer named “Lovie”), Urlacher, the history of their defense, Hester’s returns, and now they’ve finally got a decent QB. I have no real reason to hate Chicago or the franchise. Their current roster has some big splash players and the team has a colorful history.

by Varmint on Sep 2, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Never mind...

I just read that Peter King picked the Bears to go to the bowl this year. I cannot in good conscience agree with that man’s picks.

Chicago can’t win because then Cutler would get a ring and he doesn’t deserve a ring.

I would go with the Eagles

Most of my friends are Philly fans, and a SB win would likely make them less cranky during football season.

F PHILLY

I live near the City of Brotherly Puke and would love nothing more than for their crankiness to last an enternity. These fans don’t deserve a championship. Few men have provided more for a city as far as consistantly competitive football than Andy Reid and Donavan McNabb and these people trash them at the drop of a hat. On top of that, any city that would boo Santa Claus and throw snowballs at him deserves NOTHING.

A vote for the Saints. An ignominious history on the field, tragic events off the field. The victory party would last for months. And I like Brees, a total gamer who seems like a good guy.

Green Bay or Arizona

1. The Packers to give Favre his Hossa moment (Dante was right to put traitors in the lowest circle of Hell) and to reward their loyal fans (on league with Steeler Nation). Plus I’ve got friends who now live or used to live in Wisconsin, and it’s a great part of the country.

2. The Cardinals for the exact reasons MarkJoel66 mentioned, despite their weak fanbase.

Packers

I don’t want to see anyone but the Black and Gold take home Lombardi, but if we aren’t in it, I’d be good with the Packers winning it this year. They have good fans, I respect their traditions, their history, and their connection with their fanbase. Those fans have been through a lot in recent years with all the Favre drama. Can you imagine Bradshaw in a Raiders jersey, or Big Ben lining up with the Ravens? No way on this earth, but that’s what Favre in purple is like for the Packer fans.

Interesting question...

I’d like to see either the Cardinals (Pittsburgh West) or 49ers go to the Super Bowl in the NFC. In the AFC, I would like to see San Diego. Overall, I kinda have to root for the 49ers, in part because of the nostolgia of Montana/Rice (my favorite QB-WR connection), but also because of 3rd-string QB Nate Davis. He played locally for Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Ohio (same high school as Pats WR Joey Galloway). So, I gotta root for the hometown boy. As far as the Chargers go, I hate the Patriots and Ravens, and I think Tomlinson deserves a Super Bowl ring. He’s the best back I’ve seen since Barry Sanders.

Imagine go from 0-16 to 16-0 and winning the big thing. Or the air circus performs at the SB and smashes all the big D i the league. I like both teams, the Steelers had won SB in those towns. Andif it goes NO against SD, what a way to fullfill a career for Drew.

He is doing good man. He is a special talent, being that he was the ONLY undrafted rookie to make our squad last year. He overshoots his assignments a little much, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. He is just playing too fast. Should improve greatly this year and be a threat at rushing the QB.

Malor

We still own the North, and we aren’t giving that to Baltimore regardless of whether we go to Miami or not, so if I were you, I would pray the Ravens even get a wild card. To quote wrestling legend Ric Flair: “To be the MAN, you gotta beat the man.” That being said, as much as I dislike the Ravens, I respect them and their fans enough to know that they are one of the few teams that are going to have enough firepower to throw the kitchen sink at us this year. I can’t wait to play the Ravens, because our rivalry with you is becoming near legendary.

by twault on Sep 3, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You do

You guys are the defending champs, and not only do you own the AFC North at the moment, but you own the league. Until there is a new team holding up the Lombardi trophy next February, you guys are the best. I am aware of that and happy to have such competition in my division. Last year is over, and it is a brand new season. The 3 times you guys beat us last year are irrelevant once week 1 starts. So enjoy it why you can, cause its a fresh start coming soon.

Haha

Well, I thought it would be appropriate to use a quote from a guy who knows what it takes to be the best. Anyways, the Steelers and Ravens have the two best defenses in the league, and they will put hats on to find out just who the “man” is this season. The Ravens are a team that thrives on being disrespected, and by no means do I mean any disrespect, but I honestly think if it’s not the Steelers, it will be the Patriots (unfortunately). Unless someone steps up and does a “Bernard Pollard” on Tom Brady, I think they are going to be tough to beat. That being said, Thank GOD for the Ravens. What a rivalry! What a game! It’s good to have a strong rivalry like this, with two teams ready to bust each other in the face. The pathetic rivalry we have with the Browns is now more a rivalry between our fans and their fans. The sad clown team they put on the field doesn’t provide us much of a game, and I swear their fans put up more of a fight defending them than the Browns do on the field. It’s sad, and I almost want to see them turn the corner.

by worldtrip on Sep 3, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea

Glad we can agree that the Browns are the most pathetic franchise in the NFL. I read today that some of their games are in danger of being blacked out on TV because they cannot sell out their games. Its funny, cause Browns fans will tell you that they are the BEST fans in the NFL, yet they can’t even go to games anymore cause all of them are janitors in that toilet city.

I think this is the best division in football simply because of our two teams. It is sad that the Bengals and Brownies bring down our image because of how terrible they are each and every season.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

If the Steelers don't make it...

I’m just kidding. Of course they will. But IF they don’t I’d like to see…

1.) Arizona – They have a lot of players and coaches with Pittsburgh connections and it is hard not to like Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald. It’d be cool if Kurt Warner got his Bettis moment and was able to retire on top. I also have personal interests as I have Warner, Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Wells on my fantasy teams.

2.) Green Bay – As someone above mentioned, it would be funny to see a “Hossa” moment in reference to Brett Favre. I know it’s only preseason but their new 3-4 defense has looked dominant so far. The Packers have a loyal fanbase with lots of history and Green Bay is a blue collar town not dissimilar to Pittsburgh.

3.) Atlanta – After the whole Michael Vick mess a few years ago, it would be nice to see this team rebound and win their first Super Bowl. They have a classy owner in Arthur Blank and I think Tony Gonzalez is deserving of a Bettis moment as well. I also have White, Turner, and Gonzalez on my fantasy teams.

TEAMS I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT TO SEE WIN THE SUPER BOWL
1.) New England (Cheaters)
2.) Dallas (I hate the attitude of this team’s players and fans)
3.) Baltimore (I hate Ray Lewis more than any other murderer in the NFL)
4.) Washington (Dan Snyder you can’t buy the Super Bowl)
5.) San Diego (Douchebag/Bandwagon fans)
6.) NYG (My roommate’s team)

If the Steelers can't win it

Cardinals-Like the coach and Kurt is a class act and has roots local to me

Distant second and beyond:

Ravens-Like the coach and respect the way they play

Philly-Respect McNabb and despite the few that give their fans a bad rap, they have a helluva fan base. I was at the Pats-Eagles Super Bowl and their fan base earned a lot of respect from me

Falcons-Agreed, nice turn around from the Vick and head coach debacle

Saints-Always had a soft spot for those loveable losers and Brees is a pro bowler/class act

Side Note, if Favre had stayed retired and T.O. had not moved out east, I would have said the Vikings and Bills just to get their 0-4 records off the books.
