A few things I would be very happy if more Steeler fans agreed with.
1. Ben doesn't hold the ball too long. He takes sacks and makes plays late in the play. If he's throwing the ball away when his internal clock goes off we don't win a Super Bowl. It's like saying Steve Young scrambled too much, it's not "traditional" but it is what Ben is.
2. The Steelers do not win with the running game. Having balance in an offense is huge, I won't argue that we should throw the ball all the time, you need both. But The Steelers win with great QB's and WR's. Look at the Steeler's 6 Super Bowl wins, who are the MVP's? 2xQB, 3xWR, 1xRB. So 5 of 6 Super Bowl MVP's were more involved in the passing game than running.
Let me clarify this by saying that we need to work on the running game, we need to. Not because we need a great running game, but we need more balance. We can have a dominant passing attack and a solid running game and win. The Steelers win with defense. Without defense we don't win. Without a running game we have a harder time winning.
3. It is really, really hard to repeat. It's early in the season but right now quite a few teams look better than the Steelers, especially the Ravens. Teams get better, players get hurt, players have off years or just don't have great years like they did before, or maybe a few bounces go the other way. So many things have to come together to win a Super Bowl, none of which include being better on paper than the year before. However, this segues perfectly into point 4. . .
4. It is really, really early in the season. Tomlin in his third season has one hot start and two slow ones. his first season he busted guys butts in camp and we were in mid season form for the first game. Unfortunately we were in off-season form for the playoffs. You cannot stay hot all year, it is too hard. Let's hope we get into the playoffs healthy and get hot at the right time. It's similar to NCAA Basketball, you want to be hot when the post-season shows up. The early season is just for seeding.
That's it, just a few soapbox rants for all my friends here. Try not to get too high or too low, it's a long season. The identity of this team will evolve throughout the year. Last season two games in the Steelers were a nightmare, that wasn't the story of the season though. This season's story is just starting, enjoy the ride.
