I am a lifelong Steeler fan, and I believe in the tradition of the Steelers. Mel Blount helped build that tradition, and is beloved as one of the greatest football players of all time. He was great, and in his retirement from football, gave back in so many ways. His tax problem is unfortunate, and it is his responsibility. I don’t think he’s the kind of guy that would point the finger elsewhere. But for what Mel has done for the Steelers, in building a deep-set tradition in the minds and hearts of hard-working and hard-paying fans across the nation, the Steelers organization should and could come to his aid and bail him out. I really don’t believe in bail-outs, but we all know that Mel was not compensated appropriately compared to modern players in his career, and his impact was far reaching and worth millions of dollars to future Steeler revenue. In short, if the Steelers don’t have Mel those years, they probably don’t win 4 Super Bowls. Maybe they don’t win one. Mel deserves the Steelers support in a big way, and if they can shell out millions to new draft picks who couldn’t carry his jock strap, then they can certainly help Mel with a few hundred thousand to square things away with the US Government. Here’s another idea. Ask every fan to give Mel a dollar. He’ll get his $600,000, no problem. Mel deserves it. Go Steelers.
