Are steelers WR better than cincinatti's? how about DBs?

I've been scouring for information regarding steelers/cincy matchups and i was surprised to find this information.

Star-divide

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/scouting?gameId=290927004

if you click on it you'll see that the steelers are better at everything but DB.... which doesnt make much sense to me.

personally I thought that ocho cinco, coles, and henry would be considered better than holmes, ward, and miller/wallace?  I'm basing it just off the body of work the two have produced and how henry is a matchup nightmare because of his height/speed against our safeties/nickel.

Also, are their dbs that much better than ours?  i always thought Ike taylor was pretty darn good and gay was adequate at this stage of his development.  sure we could do better with carter but clark is good too...

so whats up with that?  do you agree?

Wide receivers...

I would say that even though Bengals have more explosive wide receivers, ours are probably more consistent.

Also note that Chad Ochocinco is just beyond 9,000 yards in his 9-year career while Hines Ward is approaching 10,000 in his 12 years. Yes, that means Chad has more yards per season, but what I’m saying is that Ward has proven his consistency and toughness over the long haul. Even though we’re only two games in, Homes is the second leading receiver in the NFL right now, and can put on the burners at any point after catching the ball.

I would say our DBs are evenly matched with the Bengals’ at this point. Nobody really stands out either way. William Gay, though, I would say is below average right now and has room for improvement.

interesting

i ddint think that our corners were ‘bad enough’ to be in the same boat as the bengal’s corners….

but on that note, with last years DBs where would you place them? on the same line as Eagles corners or below them??

in other words, is this years secondary, injury and all, a significant drop off from last year?

Our corners are not "bad enough"

Cincy has excellent corners. Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall are very good QBs who have not had any help around them until this year (no pass rush, no run defense, etc.). Ike is better than either of them but Gay is definitely a step below, so it’s a close call.

I still say that our CBs are better only becvause Ike is so good.

Polamalu

I would say that Polamalu is one of those players that make those around him better. If he was in the game, i would grade our DBs much higher because it reduces the type of plays opposing offenses can throw at us.

I agree that Ike Taylor is a great coverage player, and I love Ryan Clark. Clark, by far, benefits the most by Polamalu’s presence

Steeler receivers are winners; the Bengals aren't.

It’s not so much about a difference in talent; it’s mainly about confidence and a winning attitude.

If I weren't a Steelers fan I would probably take the Bengals WR corp.....

Holmes still isn’t up there yet and Ward is a possession receiver, Wallace is looking good but still unproven.
Ochocinco is a game breaker, Coles is similar in style to Holmes but just on the downside of his career, and Henry is also a game breaker, just not as much as Ochocino.

i think our DBs have theirs though, even with Troy out. Ike > any of their DBs (safeties included), same goes for Clark. Gay is probably a step behind all their players, as is Carter…..so then it comes down to the nickle corner and i’ll take the aged but smart Townsend over theirs.

Holmes isnt up where yet? he had 9 for 131 and a TD in the superbowl and in his next game he had 9 for 131 and a TD.

Holmes knocked the bungles out of the playoffs in our last game of his rookie year. a SIXTY FIVE YARD TOUCHDOWN. as a rookie. knocked em out of the playoffs…..
Holmes is a superbowl MVP. what percentage of nfl players EVER achieve that?

ward is a possession receiver…

ok so thats a slam on ward….so because ward is tough enough to go across the middle and catch the red zone TD like money he is now a POSSESSION reciever? most of his career has been on a run first offense. do you remember when he beat the best cornerback in the entire NFL with just one shoe on??? beat him in a footrace….with a barefoot and a shoe on the other foot….you know how hard that is? seriously?

wallace unproven ok…fine…. but all hes done is catch everything thrown his way in practice…preseason etc etc. wallace plays with stickum …. and mcdonald …..all hes ever done is get 1000 yards in a season…2007 …on the detroit stinking lions no less…as their THIRD receiver!

man seriously….. chad ocho cinco has won nothing and scored 1 TD against steelers in the last what…six years? TJ shoebomber is gone…..coles is on his second career…no idea how hes gonna produce….and chris henry is always injured or in jail. last week ha had one catch for seven yards. lucky for him it was a TD.

yea….ocho dingbat….coles….henry…. VS Santonio Holmes SUPERBOWL MVP….Hines Ward SUPERBOWL MVP….mcdonald and wallace…..with a hopefully up and coming sweed ….

yea….id flush the entire bungles receiver set down a toilet without a thought.

sorry man…but that was not only false innacurate and laughable …it was actually kind of offensive to a steeler fan

was that racism?

you’ve got a very strong worded passage there buddy…

tj shoebomber? he’s of middle eastern descent and you call him that? I’m half brown half black myself and i think its pretty offensive there buddy. might want to change that.

you need to calm down

first off, you seem new here, hence your rather rude and ridiculous comment.

I didn’t knock our guys at all.

Holmes dropped a TD pass in the endzone against the Bears, not to mention several more. He’s not elite yet……..he has yet to even have 1,000 yards…………aka, hes not up there yet, on his way but not there yet.

Ward IS A POSSESSION RECEIVER! Its not knock on him…….hes not going to stretch the field and hes not gonna run over linebackers…..hes there when we need him but he lacks great physical ability, ever steeler fan knows that, where you been? He plays hard, thats why hes good….

Wallace IS unproven, sure he looks good in practice and so far in the season, but that hardly means proven……

Ochocino is proven over the years and if anyone wangts to argue hes not a game changer, well then they are retarded…..Coles had a great career as a Jet, plus he can stretch the field……Henry is like a Ocho Cinco to a lesser degree, hes torn us up from time to time……sure hes injured a lot and in jail but thats not part of the discussion here, we are talking about a hypothetical matchup where the lineups are uninjured.

“fluch the entire Bengals receiver set down the toilet” seriously, how old are you?

sorry man, but your comment was not only rude and ignorant but downright offensive to fellow steeler fan and frequent contributor to this blog.

Overall pretty even

I have to say I agree with the statement that Holmes isn’t there quite yet. First game he caught everything and solidly at that. Second game he dropped several easy passes including a game winning TD that looks like it didn’t even touch his hands, just went straight through his arms. I give him that the ball was wet on one or two but the ball was wet for everyone. The rest were lack of consentration and until he consistently shows he has corrected that, he is not a top flight WR, SB MVP or not. Ward is a possession receiver and he more or less has been his whole career but he has been the ultimate punch you in the mouth possession receiver the game has ever had, no slam there. So we have two teams with good passing games and suspect secondaries , this may be one of the highest scoring pitt/cincy game in some time.
