Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1) @ Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) - Week 3 Open Thread (2nd Half)

Well, nice half of football for the Steelers. As has been the case for most of the past two years though, the Steelers haven't been able to get in the endzone consistently and really run away from teams. That's the case again today. Pittsburgh's outgaining the Bengals a lot to a little, but it's just a 10 point game at half.

Lots of great things to talk about when this one's over - Hines hitting the 10,000 mark, Fast Willie Parker running with authority and good vision, Mike Wallace continuing to make plays, Lawrence Timmons flying around, Big Snack being disruptive.

Let's just hope the Steelers keep it together though and make sure they get out of Cincinnati with a road win and a 2-1 record.

We're just making sure Cincy is in the game

We can’t give them a real beating or else they’d just give up for the rest of the season

Lots of spreading of the football, gutsy calls i.e. 4th down & deep throws, not abandoning the run game, & using the dink & dunk

this is the first game Tomlin would be outcoached by a shitty team coach.
if we lose, we lose because of poor coaching. 2 questions:
- why not go for it on 4 and 1 before cincy’s 2nd TD.
- why not give away a quick TD at the end of the game. Preserve time and score FG to win it.

by Neal Coolong on Sep 27, 2009 7:10 PM EDT reply actions

Wasn't Arians fault...

Holmes, Reed and Sweed gave Cincinnati more points than they scored on their own. How is this the fault of the coordinator? Holmes is too high to run the correct route, Sweed can’t catch the god damn football and Reed can no longer kick. What’s worse, no one – NO ONE – picks up the slack on this team. That’s the difference between this year and last. There’s no defensive leadership, there’s no offensive leadership.

This game was on the players, not the play calling. Lack of execution.

Frankly, I don’t know why people are blaming the offense. The D fell apart in the fourth. The Bengals were in FG position after 3 or 4 plays on the last two drives.

Technically

Ben gave Cinci the most points.

I still think the goat of the game is the D. LeBeau needs to figure out how to stop the dink and dunk. And our secondary is garbage without its King.

Oh boy...

Well….

it’s certainly tough to watch them lose when guys are dropping TD passes and other catches. As for the D….everyone knows that Troy IS THE MAN. He is the glue and the D is geared around him being able to do what he does—-the magic. People (including Tomlin) like to say everyone has to step up, and while that is true as far as trying to step, up, these guys CAN’T BE TROY. If they could, they wouldn’t need Troy.

If the O can just finish instead of getting FGs they would be 3-0 right now and the loss of Troy would have hurt yet….

But almost counts for nothing. This sucks, but I really do see the team improving and certainly there’s tons of games left and still 2 vs the browns, ravens, and 1 vs the bengals at home.

Buckle up for the ride!!

complacency

During the preseason I said that the Steelers had gone soft. The practice sessions were too easy on the veterans, BB was out doing stupid programs with Shaq, etc. Now we see the outcome of this. Santonio caused the first Cinci td by running the wrong route. The o-line still looks bad. Sweed, along with the entire ’08 draft class must be jettisoned for salvage value (i.e., 7th round draft picks). Arians and Zierlein should be fired. And Tomlin needs to find some of the discipline he imposed in year one. To lose one close one that they should have won is bad but acceptable, but two of these is a pattern. They are a soft team that lack motivation and hunger. Contrast this with the Ravens. They do not deserve to win until they address these issues.

I understand the desire to talk when you win. But you would think there would be some part of your brain that would take a look at the big picture…and realize you don’t have much to be happy about.

Silver Lining

I think starting like this could actually help the Steelers in the long run…if they can turn it around.

If you win the SB and start out hot (like 08 NYG), the tendency is to come back down to earth later in the season. Starting off slow like this could make the Steelers realize early on that this is a new season and they have to buckle down to get it done. Meaning, they will slowly improve in time for the playoffs.

Cincinnati had 23 of the games’s final 30 plays.
Cincinnati 2-for-2 on 4th down in 4th quarter
Cincinnati 1 sack, Pittsburgh 0 in the 4th quarter.

But this is shaping up to be a mirror image of the 2006 season. We’re not getting blown out or beaten, we are beating ourselves. We moved down the field with ease most of the first half, but didn’t keep it up in the second. I don’t care what the final score was, they are not a better team. You can make the argument that they were due a win considering how many times we’ve beaten them at Cincy.

Tomlin can't win close games

Games less than 7 point difference
2007 2-5
2008 5-3 (Thanks D & Ben)
2009 1-2

by Sick Puppy on Sep 27, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

Great finish but...

should never have gotten to the point where they needed that play.
The games this year should have never been as close as they were. How hard is it to defense run, run, pass in the second half?

by Sick Puppy on Sep 27, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

So a guy who’s been in the league 2.2 years can’t win close games because he’s 8-10?

I like writing off the wins as having nothing to do with him.

Let’s go ahead and say Tomlin has never won a close game, because he’s always on the sideline when it counts. I mean, where was he on that TD pass? Tomlin never got open this entire game, and he didn’t even block. The man did nothing at all. Worse coach ever.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 27, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a fine coach for most of the game – and the Steelers don’t get blown out. The defense shouldn’t have to be on the field for most of the fourth quarter because of run, run, pass. It worked when there was a bigger running back out there. It isn’t working now.

by Sick Puppy on Sep 27, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

We also happened to have a sick offensive line then. Multiple Pro Bowlers and big money up front and little cap space invested in WR’s and QB.

On the bright side....

Wallace is gonna be great…they need to design some big plays for the kid. With him, Holmes and Ward…the O can really open up for the run and wind up with big plays.

And let’s not forget Heath Miller. I think the Steelers became enamored with Wallace today and didnt’ go to Heath later on for the big play for a 1st down on 3rd.

I believe they will fix the problems…

You never know. When it seems like the worst for this team, they find a way to come back. I am interested to see how this goes. I still think there has been steady progression along the O-line. This one's on Tomlin

This embarrassing loss to the lowly Bengals is on Coach Tomlin. I don’t care how bad you think you might beat a team… if, on your first drive of the game, you steamroll your way to within 12-inches of the opposing team’s goal-line… you punch it in. Period. Good grief, coach. Why would you EVER opt for a FG when you have a 6’5" 250-lb hulk at QB that simply needs to bulldoze 1-foot for an opening drive TD? YOU DESERVE THIS LOSS, COACH! YOUR TEAM COMPLETELY DOMINATED BUT CAME AWAY WITH A LOSS… WHY??? LOOK IN THE MIRROR, COACH TOMLIN. THERE’S YOUR ANSWER.

by Tellinitlikeitis on Sep 27, 2009 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

Well, i dont disagree with you about going for it there

But I think part of the rationale was getting Jeff Reed a chip shot easy FG to help him move on from last week.

I also think they don’t want to rely on BB to always punch it in. That’s what the RB FB is for….which for the steelers cant get it done.

With all the goaline trouble they have, I’d love to see them get a play for miller to take the ball and crunch it in there. he’s huge, has great hands and power. Why not try it? Can it be any worse?

Orrrr…jump flip over the top…whatever it takes..

totally agree

But it was Arians who made the play call. The problem is the offense and the inability to put teams away. Tomlin set a complacent tone this year, but the play calling and offense execution (or more precisely, the lack thereof) is on the OC and players.

Yeah that TD drop, Holmes playing like crap, Ben’s pick 6, the defense not making the big play at any point in the game? That was Tomlin.

I heard Tomlin stepped on Troy’s knee and that’s why he is out. That and the team lunch was too hot so the guys had some indigestion.

Steelers are just a 14 pt team

±one score

If you put up more than 20ish you can beat them most of the time. Their offense is just anemic.

by fleeb on Sep 27, 2009 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

If you put up more than 20ish, the steelers will still keep it within a touchdown.

Doesn’t matter how many, the offense is set up to keep it close. 2nd half scheme – run, run, pass (sometimes run – just to keep it interesting)

Interesting Fact, Arians has never won a Super Bowl without a running back like Bettis.

Oh wait, that would be wrong.

All those Playmakers? How many drops did we have today? And Ben’s pick, was that on Arians? “Hey Ben on this next play try to deflect the ball off the defender, it’ll be awesome!”

I’m sure it is Arians fault when our receivers don’t get open or a FB misses his block or a RB hits the wrong hole.

It’s only the 3rd week of the season and we’re missing our key Defensive Catalyst. It’s good that we get these lumps out of the way early and finish strong. If we can weather the storm of the Chargers, I believe we’ll be ok with Cleveland and Detroit afterward. I’m sure we’ll have all the bugs worked out by the end of the bye week, if not before…

by Peezie on Sep 27, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Arians didn’t need a RB like Bettis last year (it would have made things easier). They lost the lead and had to come back to win.

Oh wait – they had to have more aggressive play calling to win in the end. Sort of makes the point.

Play calling is great early in the game. Not so much later.

by Sick Puppy on Sep 27, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Bettis would not have helped last year, unless it was Bettis in his prime.

Bettis went down in the backfield easy. If you got penetration before he got rolling he went down.

I love Jerome, he was one of the best ever, but he was crap without a good line. Fortunately he never had that in Pittsburgh.

by Phantaskippy on Sep 27, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

“RB like Bettis” – I just mean a larger body with ability. Bettis could gain 1 yard when needed.

by Sick Puppy on Sep 27, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Key problem with the Steelers....

Two straight weeks the Steelers have gotten a decent lead and then lost it late. Most people will point to the absence of Troy Polamalu, which I agree is definitely a factor, but I think another age-old rule of winning football is in play: If you cannot run the ball, the game is never over.

The Bengals enjoyed three full possession in the last 18 minutes of the game, ending in a missed field goal and two touchdowns. Down 11 with 14:51 to go, the Steelers could end the game with a sustainable running game and any defense. Instead they managed to burn off only 6:20 of the final 18:00, and Cincinnati stole the win.

by ec on Sep 27, 2009 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

Sweed now #4 receiver

How could he not be demoted? And Wallace was clutch. Two weeks in a row that the Steelers lead the entire game and lose in last minute. Could be worse — we’re one Rob Bironas kick from being 0-3. Lots of blame for this one but you gotta put the main heat on the defense. I will almost always take the odds when the game is on the back of the D on the last drive. But two 4th downs and they couldn’t stop ’em.

by Citizen of Steeler Nation on Sep 27, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

Granted

but my point was that our one win was by a whisker, in overtime. All 3 were close but, it could be worse — as hard as that is to see as we’re dorwning in our beer and tears.

by Citizen of Steeler Nation on Sep 27, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

RIght!

All 3 were close.

If the D plays THAT much better, and the O plays THAT much better….then they are 3-0.

I think sooner than later it’s gonna click…..if not next week…then certainly by the time they are done with the lions and browns….

Predicted this last Tuesday on this blog....

‘I plan to keep both the Maalox and the Lagavulin both at the ready.
It ain’t gonna be pretty. It ain’t gonna be fun. And it may not end well.’

Now listen up: the OL was outstanding. Ben had time and FWP had lanes. Ward and Wallace were terrific. The Bengals may have been outplayed, but they’re 3-0 against the spread, and are a seriously under-rated ball club.

The defense simply failed miserably in the final two minutes of the first half and in the final five minutes of the game. Sweed is clearly in deep shit, and it seems like Tomlin decided it was time to bitchslap Mendenhall — maybe he screwed up during the week.

This team has eight new players this year, and they haven’t jelled yet. The chemistry is lacking. But they’re still better than they were at this time last year.

They’re going to get their asses kicked in practice, but there was much to build on in Sunday’s performance. What they need is for Polamalu to return at or near full speed, and for Ben to stay healthy.

Thank God the schedule is easier than last year’s.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer.

This one is on Tommlin

Is Not only not going for it on forth and inches at the goal or going for it on forth and 5 to finish the half and give Cinci some momentum back or not been ready for a trick play on special teams when it was obvious the perfect time for them to tried it. (I told my wife they are going to try something here, they have to or the game is going to be out of hand)

But more importantly the offense and the defense became completely conservative by the forth Quarter.
Yes I know we want to blame Arians, but a decision to hold your horses and start running on first and second and not blitzing and playing prevent defense or to start playing not to looses at the end comes from the Head Coach.

Coach lost his balls in the forth Quarter, maybe it was the pick six, maybe he was afraid to blitz like last week and get burned, but he lost confidence in its team and we lost.

Yes sweed drop a TD, Reed missed a FG, Holmes or Ben made a terrible mistake, and the defense never did anything special. But they had an 11 poits advantege when he got afraid.

Sorry to say this, IMO I think that BB is more risponsible for this loss than

BA, b/c BB plays great between t 20´s, but fails inside t red zone, then if BA sends a play that is not a short pass, BB must select another dink, dunk play, in this way We maybe cannot beeing stopped. What do We do, play great between t 20’s & in this game We don´t even use the no-hurddle ofense, in that way I find that even when they are sending U plays, U cannot accept those when U see that those are against your rythm, then U (BB) just don´t let those points slip away of your reach. Mostly when from the first game played, timming was BB best asset. When U have a D on their toes then U, can even simply “spread” t OL, and then U can run, and We don´t apply that. And BB even at their first season was trying to take advantage of t slightest movement, WTF happend with that? I don´t know, IMHO.

O sales tickets,...and let D rest a little, and D Win Championships.
