Is Sweed the Chink in the Chunk?

Arians states that his strategy is to gain yards in "big chunks".

So where were the chunks the past two weeks? Ben has either underthrown Wallace or hit Sweed in the "SweedSpot" on the deep balls.

The strategy may be to get big chunks, but, the execution seems to only produce dinks and dunks.

To add insult to injury, Holmes has been channeling the "hands of Ike".

I'm sure that some of the O Line bashers will try to put the blame on Z. Hey, at least his taste in porn was within the acceptable boundaries of prurient interest.

Well

Sweed’s been barely on the field all year, and even though if he hangs onto that TD pass, we win, he really hasn’t been much of a factor at all this season. What sucks the most about it, is that every time he drops a catch like this, it comes after he does everything else right. On that play and the play in AFCG, and this past game, he absolutely burns the DB with an outstanding route, and then drops a beauty. It’s time for him to either put up or go away, and this is coming from one of his fans.

Time To Go Away

HS
That’s 3 big TD drops by Sweed in the last 6 games. Thankfully it didn’t kill us against SD or Balt but it caught up wth us yesterday. You CAN’T drop TDs consistently and then win games. It’s time for Limas to go grab his sweats and sit on the bench with the other practice squad players. Maybe if there is an injury later on we will need him, but we surely don’t need any more of what he has given us for 2 years.

I don't want to agree with you....but

Sweed just doesn’t get the job done in crunch time. I know they don’t want to give up on a 2nd rounder but dang!

I want McDonald

lets give him a shot he is a guy that catches the ball lets put him in and see what happens

McDonald

The guy had 79 catches for 1000 yards in 2007. Why is he riding the pine while we watch Sweed “develop”? Let Sweed develop in practice and put the gamer in the game.

He wouldnt have gotten that separation though

Sweed is fixable. Mcdonald doesnt have that deep speed and length.

Sweed can be fixed, that catch was an improvement. It was a catch, at least, for a bit.

it doesn't matter if you don't catch the ball.

he doesn’t cost us a timeout when he drops them now.

Send him back to Texas

It really doesnt matter how tall, fast you can run, high you can jump, UNLESS YOU HOLD ON TO THE BALL………………

The pass was perfect and the “toothpick” drop another game winning throw!!!

Hell – Ike could have caught that ball..

Guess its time to send him back to Texas and let Wallace and McDonald do the catching..

tell me a WR that didn't have drops early in his career

even the great one, Jerry Rice, had drop (and fumble) issues early on, Sweed will be fine

It's not that he drops passes

It’s when! I’m not giving up. It may pay off like when you are playing basketball and there’s a guy on the other team that can’t make clutch shots. You double another guy and say “self check” for the “unclutch” player. He can run all over the court because no one is going to pass to him. Then all of a sudden he breaks for the basket so they say heck he can’t miss a layup….sure enough…doink he misses it.

The Bengals said “self check” and doink. DOH! it bounced of the 6 foot 4 plexiglass. I just playing but I’m serious….make sense?

What I meant to say is sooner or later he might make a layup, but

how many times are you going to have to watch him look like a hockey goalie? Don’t get him on your dodge ball team.

+1

As I said above, I’m a fan of Sweed, and I’m rooting for him, but my expectations are not what they were. Guy’s a great character kid, but just doesn’t hang onto the ball on easy passes. He’s gotta figure that out, or the NFL’s second acronym comes into play: Not for Long.

Bench Sweed

Dress McDonald, he has good hands.

Note to Arians:

You can’t gain “big chunks” inside the Red Zone. So actually you’re just admitting that you don’t have any short-yardage offense. I think you need one.

by Billy52 on Sep 28, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You got it!!

They have no redzone offense except Ben running the ball or a pass to the TE.

by Steeler Nation VA on Sep 28, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Boy how times have changed

I remember the excitement when Mendy and Sweed were drafted #1 and #2.

I think there is more hope for Sweed, although I agree McDonald needs to dress and be the 4th receiver. The hard part is, I know he is trying hard. I think he is trying too hard. Watch that drop v. Bengals, he really tries to cradle the ball and just can’t do it. You only get so many chances…

Mendy is lost. I really get the sense from what has been written last year and this year (aside from the obligatory compliments from the coaching staff) the coaches, esp coach Tomlin, just don’t like him. He is really digging a big hole for himself. He has 2 decent plays v. Bears (really the first sign of life from him) and follows that up by getting bench by Tomlin for having a poor week of practice. Sigh!

by SteelerMike on Sep 28, 2009 1:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

“Mendy is lost” … I agree. I’ve been one of his biggest supporters based on the physical talent that I saw in college, his youth and the few glimpses we’ve seen to date. The Steelers have not screwed up first-round picks in the Colbert era so I find it hard to believe they didn’t know the kind of person they were drafting, but perhaps they didn’t in this case. He’s still young and far from a lost cause. But it’s not Tomlin’s style to bring an internal team issue out into the public like this. That’s the NFL equivalent of corporal punishment and I doubt Tomlin did it without thinking that Mendenhall needs his ass burned in public. Maybe it will work but it’s an extreme measure and shows Mendenhall is on the verge of being off the team, one way or another, if he doesn’t get his act together. Getting benched after a poor performance is one thing. Getting benched after your first good performance is something else.

Human nature is a funny thing...

When things go bad, we always need a scapegoat to blame it on.

While there is no way to deny the drop hurt real bad, let’s hold off on the tar and feather please.

It was not just Sweed, a lot of things went wrong in this game, his was just the most odvious and convenient one to find fault in.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Sep 28, 2009 1:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not faulting him, but

tyou have to admit, it is concerning.

Can't deny I'm concerned...

The drop was as badly timed as you can possibly have one. But, if we make a few stops on fourth downs, it is an afterthought.

Here’s a question. How many 6’4" WR are there that can get open downfield in the endzone like that? Not too many. I am disgusted with the drops, but find solace in the fact he can do what he can do. Now, what he needs to do now is catch about 100 more balls a day, and pray to the Hands God (Freddie Mitchell? [Rem- ember him, for some reason that popped into my head right there, I find it funny]). I know you know this Arn, more for the crowd.

Drops like that are inexcusable when you’re a starting WR in the NFL, luckily for us, we may have found a new slot guy in Wallace. Make him your everyday third, make Limas the fourth guy, and keep working on him. Simple solution.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Sep 28, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just a question

What difference does it make if you are 5’ 6" or 6’ 4" and get open downfield if you can’t cath the ball?

Touche...

My point wasn’t in his size, although this is a positive aswell, more on the get open side.

You have to catch, after all that’s why they put receiver in the position title. Until he can catch on the regular, he is no doubt a concern. My opinion is it’s mostly mental, but I’m no psychologist. His drops have come, for the most part, in critical situations. They are solo spotlight is on, high pressure plays. Making them more odvious and more painful, to us and him. If he proves to himself he can make the big catch, the weight is lifted and the world is in his hands, again just my opinion.

Look at, for instance, TO. He came in with all the physical tools, size, speed, seperation, strength, but he couldn’t catch consistently. Then, by some miracle he hauls in a pass from Steve Young to win a game and he took it and ran with it (too freaking far if you ask me). I kind of feel if Limas can just make one big play for this team, in a crucial spot, all of his drops will fade away, in his mind anyway. I guess I’m hoping beyond hope…

I like your positive outlook

and I hope you are right. I’d liek to see him be the big play receiver he was thought out to be.

I agree. The Steelers missed so many golden opportunities in this game, it’s pointless to blame any single player. Face it: they all sucked yesterday!

How do players do this?

SportsMumboJumbo.com
WRs that are so good in College cant catch in the pros. It is not like they forget how to catch a ball, right? Why does this ahppen?

Sweep Sweed under the Rug

I agree anyone else but Sweed, of course unless the call is for a “JUMP BALL” then he’ll catch it..

It was just pathetic, he catches the ball, moves it to his chest as he is falling, then What .. He lets go of the ball to signal TD, guess he thought he was the Ref. also.. Must have been playing imaginary ball in his head.. Cuz his head was not in the game on that catch…

Someone else said even the best receivers have drops, I could understand if we asking him to make a catch every other down or so.. But we are not, only a couple times a game..

Ben’s girlfriend “Natalie Grubis” could have hauled that one in..

by BigDaddyTat2boy on Sep 28, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No...

But I’m willing to bet she can’t run past a 4.4 running DB 30-40 yards downfield, get open in the endzone, catch the ball, and get two feet down. I’m fairly confident in that.

by NYSteelersFan4 on Sep 28, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's nothing new

Sweed went up over a shorter cornerback but couldn’t catch a TD that would have tied up the 2007 Oklahoma game in the final minutes. Texas lost by 7.

I lived in Austin while he was at UT. Sweed was a better receiver before his wrist surgery.

I doubt its the problem

The guy CAUGHT this damn ball. He really did. This was 100000 times better than the AFCCG doink off his hands.

He just had to focus a bit longer.

I heard the Bengals sent him some hot wings before that play

He wouldn’t resist. Dang it! He couldn’t find a napkin before he got put back in.
