Answering your Chargers Questions

Hey kids.  I don't know if you remember me, but I was around here before and after the Chargers/Steelers playoff game last season.  My name is John and I run Bolts From The Blue, SB Nation's site for the Chargers.

Every week this season I've been throwing up a FanPost on the site for the Chargers upcoming opponents to help answer any questions the opposing fans have in preparing for the upcoming game.

I haven't seen the last two weeks of Steelers games, so I have some questions myself, and I'm hoping that Blitzburgh follows suit and does a FanPost at BFTB where I can ask how the Steelers have gotten to 1-2.

Either way, fire away with your questions in the comments and I'll make sure they get answered in a timely fashion.  Also, please Rec this post to keep it towards the top of the home page through the weekend.

The ravens fans that lovingly troll our site say that your receivers are all 7’ feet tall and Rivers has developed a great deep passing game. Can you tell us what has changed from last year in the passing game?

1. Do not forget that in 2008 Philip Rivers was coming off knee surgery and had recovered ridiculously fast. The same thing that Brady has had a year to recover from, Rivers did in essentially 6 months. Although he was great in 2008, he seems to have a little more zip on his passes this season.

2. They are not 7’ tall, but close. Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson are both 6’5" (and fast). Kassim Osgood is too, but you won’t see him. Antonio Gates is 6’4" and finally 100% after being hobbled all of last season with a toe injury. Legedu Naanee is also 6’2" with blazing speed. The Ravens fans were left scarred because they don’t have a CB over 5’11". Jackson and Floyd had fun going against that.

3. Philip Rivers is a workaholic. He spends his offseasons analyzing tape of himself, finding weaknesses and improving them. Somehow this offseason he developed an incredible touch on deep throws. Through the first 3 weeks of the season he’s definitely had the best “deep ball” in the league. Even better than Manning or Brady. It’s always strong, it always hits the WR in stride. It’s an incredible thing to watch.

4. The reason the deep passing game is being used more this season is because there is no running game at all. The offensive line is decimated by injuries and LT is not there. Without being able to churn out long drives, the Chargers have had to rely heavily on big plays.

Here you go

That was his throw to VJ against the Dolphins on Sunday. This pass impressed me because Rivers changed his normal arc and threw a bullet downfield that would’ve landed in Jackson’s pocket if he didn’t catch it with his hands. It was great to see that it doesn’t have to be the perfect scenario for Rivers to throw a great deep pass.

When people describe their teams with answers to questions they always seem unbeatable. I know we do it too.

Speaking of the offensive line, how is their pass blocking? This year teams are getting rid of the ball quickly to avoid our ferocious pass-rush (they are watching last years tape). I expect the chargers will do the same, except that Rivers was obviously able to pass deep against the ravens.

AWFUL

The Chargers starting Center and Right Guard were both injured in Week 1. The Center, Nick Hardwick (and the guy that calls out blocking assignments usually) is out for another 7 weeks or so. The Right Guard is a rookie who missed half of training camp and 2 preseason games with the same injury. Louis Vasquez, the RG, might play against Pittsburgh. That would help.

In the last 2 weeks, with a backup Guard playing Center, and a backup Tackle playing Right Guard (yes, seriously), the Chargers have had a lot of trouble with stunt blitzes up the middle. A lot of the time Rivers is getting killed or running for his life while one of the fill-ins is looking around wondering who he was supposed to block.

If Rivers can get a second or so, the Chargers will be fine. However, he needs to stay upright and healthy for the Bolts to win.

ah so the middle is the weakness. Maybe Timmons can have his first marque game…

It should be a little bit better with Vasquez in there. Even though he’s a rookie, he probably would’ve been a first round pick if he wasn’t coming out of Texas Tech (which made everyone nervous about his run-blocking).

Still, without Hardwick there, it’s a weakness. Marcus McNeill hasn’t had a great start to the season at LT either, but he’s been fighting injuries and was very sick against the Dolphins.

Nope. Farrior

Farrior stunts, Timmons/Fox cuts in front of Farrior and takes on the blocker. Then Farrior cuts around his fellow LB and blows up the middle. The inside guys basically cross over one another.

We’ve seen Farrior do it a few times in the last couple of games. Farrior was a half-second late getting to Cutler, but he still applies pressure.

I tend to block out most of my memories from that game. I remember watching the first quarter and thinking “We don’t have a shot” and then my mind decided to stop recording the images.

I also was pretty sure that I was blaming a missed tackle for that return, but I just watched it again and you’re right. He out-kicked his coverage. You can’t really blame him though. It was the biggest game of the season, he was being talked about more than any other punter I can remember. He just got a little amped. It was a rare mistake for him.

We usually call him “mighty mouse” or “tiny darren”. The easy answer is you spy on him with a corner and make sure you never take your eye off him, otherwise he’ll get behind the defense and be gone.

Is Sproiles a cool customer or what?

I really like this kid and he seems to do something dynamic week in and week out. The Bolts should feel blessed to have a guy who can both "Pinch Hit’ for LT and make big plays in special teams and within their offense.

by WARDANE33 on Oct 1, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he’s a very good “pinch hitter”. His 2.4 yards per carry is my testament to that. I think Sproles is the best kick returner and third down back in football and an incredible offensive weapon, but he’s not a starting RB and cannot start in LT’s place with any effectiveness.

by John Gennaro on Oct 1, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

2.4 yards per carry

that is for this season, he has a 4.4 yards per carry average over his entire career which is identical to LT’s granted they are not in the same building let alone same class as NFL RB’s go. i was just trying to be complimentary of “the lightning bug.” he gives you a nice option when LT is hurt which has been more often that not here lately.

yeah how is the chargers o-line compared to last year in the playoffs

I want to see some sacks, particularly from Woodley. He did alright against the Chargers last year. Should the Steelers outside linebackers expect the same matchups that they saw last time they played the bolts?

also has Merriman made a big impact being back on the field or his he still warming up?

"It was an attrition football game and you know we like that."

by showtime on Sep 29, 2009 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

If Woodley is going up against the RT, he’ll be at a disadvantage. Jeromey Clary, who was a weak-link on the line last year, has been a stud this season. If you’re going to get sacks they’re probably coming from Rivers’ blind side or up the middle. The weakness up the middle has also created a lot more sacks for 3-4 defensive lineman (as opposed to LBs) as the pocket is collapsing in front of Philip.

by showtime on Sep 29, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends

Marcus McNeill is great but inconsistent. They may give him a chance to handle Harrison on his own. If he can’t handle him, the Chargers have lots of options. They could double with a FB (we have 2 that are good pass-blockers), they could put Manumaleuna out there as a second TE, etc. etc.

The double-teams will come if he’s causing trouble. They’ll probably try to handle him with just McNeill to start though.

If differs from fan to fan. Some are true believers that think he’ll get healthy and be the MVP again. Some think he’s done even if he gets healthy. Some think he’ll never be healthy again.

Personally, I think he’s done as a top-flight RB and possibly even as a starter (although he’ll get his chance again in week 6). I think after this season he either becomes a backup (as in splitting carries, getting 10 touches per game) or is released and signs elsewhere. I also think the Chargers will draft a RB in the first round to be the new starting RB.

Nothing's for sure

but the swap meet location seems like the Chargers’ best bet to stay in San Diego. It’s a good location because it’s closer to L.A., keeps the team in S.D., offers easy transportation by being right off the freeways, etc. etc.

If I was a betting man, I’d say that’s where they’re going to land. but it won’t be until at least 2011.

Charger Fan Here

I think LT is a top 5 all time RB. I DO NOT think he is done, as most network type analysts seem to think.

I assume he’ll take some time to get back up to speed, but if he plays, he’ll go all out. Yes, late stages, but he can still be a top 5-10 back in this League, and with our passing game, fewer teams than in past years will commit 8 in the box.

I’m putting my 2 cents in as a Fan. I do not claim to have John’s knowledge of LT’s condition. Only answered because it was asked of fan’s views. Mr. Obviousman and I disagree about LT’s future. I don’t see him playing for anyone else. His pride may say he has more to give after the Chargers say he doesn’t, but money won’t make him go elsewhere. He breaks his records as a Charger, or he retires. He won’t get to Emmitt, but he isn’t done.

He catches EVERYTHING (I swear he has something illegal on his gloves), in a straight line he must run a 4.3, he’s one of the hardest workers on the team and he’s only been a WR for a few years (he started as a QB at Boise State). Naanee is a gem

I can’t believe he isn’t starting ahead of Chambers. Is there any talk about him getting the starting gig? He has great hands, good size, speed … the whole package. He could cause huge matchup problems especially against the blitz. He’s too big and fast for any of our nickle backs or safeties.

by steeler.lifer on Sep 30, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

The plan going into the season was for VJ and Chambers to start with Floyd as the slot receiver. Chambers has been so bad, and Naanee and Floyd so good, that most of the time Floyd is in Chambers spot and Naanee is the slot guy (with CC on the sidelines).

Chambers is in the final year of his contract. He’ll continue to split time, because Naanee is young and Floyd is an injury risk, until the end of the season when he’s let go.

Which isn’t to say the team won’t keep him if it’s easy. If there’s no new CBA in place by free agency he becomes a RFA and the Chargers could get him for cheap. If they have nobody else they’d want to franchise, they might do that as well.

Woodley's coming out party for the 09-10 season

Lamar Woodley has a problem with Rivers running his mouth and they went at each other last year in both games with Woodley getting the better of him. Do you think Rivers will “just play” or is he still challenging the oppositions LB’s verbally during the game? His mouth might be just what the Doctor ordered to WAKE UP 56 who has gotten off to a slow start.

by WARDANE33 on Sep 29, 2009 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t remember them having words last year, honestly. I can only think of three instances where Rivers has really opened his mouth, and none of them are against the Steelers (once against the Raiders this year, once against Indy and once against Cutler & Denver in 2007). Maybe I’m missing something.

Philip doesn’t really predict whether or not he’s going to “just play”. If he’s getting into it and feels like talking some smack, he’ll do it. The same way you would if you were playing football in your front yard with your buddies. It’s not some choreographed gimmick. So yes, I guess that means there’s a chance Philip talks some trash at Woodley.

after the first sack

Rivers told Woodley to “get back in the huddle” after he did the “boot” and Woodley told him to shut his mouth he’d be back again. low and behold, he got the sack fumble recovery later in the game. i saw that on an interview this summer with Woodley on the NFL Network. he did give Rivers props for being a damn good qb in this league with a bunch of weapons. i am sure that stuff goes on every week though. i like Rivers, he is my QB in our fantasy football league for the last few years. it’s a “keeper” league and i am keeping him for awhile. good work on answering these posts / questions.

I have Rivers and Big Ben at QB and I don't know who to start this week

I know Rivers could put up better fantasy numbers than Ben without the Chargers winning the game. I also know most are predicting more from Rivers the Ben. But I feel in my homer heart that the Steelers D will finally turn it on and exploit the o-line weaknesses being described above. I hope that Ben will keep getting better like he has each week and finally put together a nice multiple touchdown day including hitting Holmes at least once. This is all hope.

What does everyone think? Big Ben or Rivers more points for fantasy? I’m trying to think with my head and not my heart.

Overview of the defense

Obviously your deep passing game is the distinguishing characteristic of your team right now, but what can you tell us about your defense? How ready for the loss of Jamal Williams was your depth chart? Are the improvements in the pass defense a function of the QB’s and game situations you’ve faced or do you think they’ve taken a legitimate step forward? Aside from just sack numbers, how’s the pass rush looking?

Thanks for the level headed info.

How ready for the loss of Jamal Williams was your depth chart?
As least ready as possible. Ryon Bingham was supposed to work as the backup DT this season, but went on IR during training camp. With that, J-Will’s backups became two projects: Ogemdi Nwagbuo (who worked at the San Diego Airport last season) and Vaughn Martin (who played college football in Canada last season).

Luckily, Nwagbuo has answered the call. They’re both very raw, but they’re growing at a pace or two steps forward and one step back. Ogemdi is the starting DT and plays most of the time. Against Baltimore he looked serviceable. Against Miami he looked like a beast and a future star. We’re not sure who we’ll see against Pittsburgh, but it certainly won’t match Williams’ output.

Are the improvements in the pass defense a function of the QB’s and game situations you’ve faced or do you think they’ve taken a legitimate step forward?
A little of both. Russell is anything but an NFL QB, and Chad Henne looked like a kid playing in his first Pop Warner game when he got in. Pennington played alright, as did Bruce Gradkowski and Joe Flacco, but nobody blew the defense away.

The biggest change I see is health. Clinton Hart is healthy and appears to be less of a weakness. Antonio Cromartie is healthy and dangerous as ever. What’s been interesting to watch is QBs try to avoid throwing at Jammer and Cromartie. Outside of two blown plays in which WRs were left completely uncovered, I don’t know that the Chargers have allowed any passes for more than 20 yards to any WRs. When the QBs look downfield you can tell there’s great coverage because they’ll typically dump it off to the check-down guy.

The only thing that kept Oakland in the game was a blown play and Baltimore would’ve lost without that blown play as well. I said last week that if the Chargers could avoid blowing coverage like that, they’d beat Miami. I feel the same way against Pittsburgh. Ben will probably throw a couple of balls deep that he shouldn’t and that could be the difference.

Aside from just sack numbers, how’s the pass rush looking?
Let’s not forget about the sack numbers, because they tell a good story. The Chargers are tied for 25th in the league with 3 sacks in 3 games. By comparison, the Steelers are tied for 14th with 5 in 3 games.

The pass rush is a confusing topic because there’s no consistency. It was non-existent against the Raiders and after talking all offseason about being blitz-happy Ron Rivera called a very vanilla scheme. In the second half of the Ravens game (we’re a great second half team), the pass rush seemed to turn on and Shawne Merriman seemed to be creating good pressure. Against the Dolphins, there seemed to be some blitzing going on but there wasn’t a ton of pressure. After Pennington and Merriman left the game, the defense seemed content with trying to confuse Henne in cover into throwing a pick and they accomplished that.

Do I think the Chargers will have much of a pass-rush against the Steelers? Not really. Merriman is probably going to be out and if FWP is too the defense will gameplan to stop the pass with it’s tremendous CBs and coverage LBs. I’d bet on one sack, maybe two if a d-lineman gets one.

Thanks for the info. One more question, and it’s okay if you don’t know the answer or if there isn’t an answer. How do the Chargers typically use their CB’s? Do they generally have safety help (i.e. 2 deep zone or man) or are they on their own (i.e. cover 1 man or cover 3 zone) or something else entirely? Do they press often? Do you run more zone or man coverages? I understand that they probably switch based on situation and opponent, but a lot of teams have a preferred base look. Just curious.

Ben usually destroys zones (yardage-wise, anyways), but our offense can really struggle against man coverages, especially when coupled with press coverage and a good pass rush. Basically the entire NFC East. Anyway, I always look for opponents’ ability to pull that off, as it’s the best way to shut down our offense. We haven’t faced a defense that’s tried to do it this year… not that it’s done us any good.

It depends both on the situation and what appears to be working during the game. If the pass-rush is working, you’ll see a ton of press, one-on-one man coverage. All of our CBs are big and strong and can really disrupt the play at the line.

The flip side of that is if the pass-rush can’t get anything going, the team will drop back and play a lot of zone.

It’s impossible to know the team’s gameplan on defense because it changes every week. Ideally, they’d love to play man with a great pass-rush. They’ll trying it at least a couple of times early in the game to see how effective it can be. Those plays will determine what they do for the rest of the game.
