Steelers @ Bills recap - in pictures
I finally got a chance to finish watching through last week's game last night. Here are some of the highlights (and a couple lowlights) in stills, hope you enjoy. More after the jump.
Willie Colon laying a punishing block - the guy ended up flat on his back. (flickr.com)
Limas Sweed going up for his first reception - that ball was nearly 8 feet off the ground! (flickr.com)
Max Starks paves the way for Rashard Mendenhall. (flickr.com)
Starks in the process of sacking Roethlisberger. He was trying to block Aaron Maybin, but ended up going through Ben to do it. (flickr.com)
Mendenhall's touchdown run - it looks like I-279 got re-routed through Heinz field! (flickr.com)
Keyaron Fox lays the wood. (flickr.com)
Tony Hills in the process of getting beaten like a drum by the speed rush. (flickr.com)
Fox jumps into the henhouse. (flickr.com)
Joe Burnett makes a play on the ball. (flickr.com)
Shipley and his short arms driving a man miles away from the play. (flickr.com)
My final takeaways from last week's game:
- The offensive line is still maddeningly inconsistent, but I think we've turned into a power running team again, at least on the right side of the line.
- Charlie Batch looked really, really good the other night. He had poise, stood up to the pass rush, and every pass was zippy and accurate. He has the #2 spot wrapped up, and deserves it.
- Stefan Logan's returns aren't just the result of good blocking. On his long punt return in the second half, I counted him make three different guys with a chance at him miss. He is patient, but hits top speed in nothing flat.
- Joe Burnett is a big time ball hawk, and definitely makes the team. He may not get a lot of playing time at first, but he's got a future with the Steelers.

Shhh
Don’t say anything positive about the line. You might get flamed.

Haha
I’m actually pretty excited about a bulked up Essex playing guard. He’s the best athlete we have on the line, and as long as he can even sort of hold the point, I think he’ll be both our best pass protector and our best zone blocker.
I’m more skeptical of Colon’s “improvements”, but I’ll take it over a bad camp and preseason.

What I want to know is what defense the Bills were playing on that play. I don’t see anybody who looks even remotely in position on that play. Maybe they thought “the Steelers can’t run on the goal line, so lets play a 1-5-5 defense where everyone tries to run around the OL.” Or something.
Also, watch the NFL.com highlight for that play. The one guy who is sort of between Mendy and the goalline (#55, I think) literally runs away from a pulling Justin Hartwig. Great comedy.

thanks man
just decided to take some screen grabs as I went through the game, hard part is getting ones that aren’t too blurry.
Sweed's catch
only 8 ft high? sweed is 6 foot 4, his feet look to be another foot off the ground and I’d bet his arms+hands are about 2 1/2 feet. thats just under 10 foot high. I hope can does it consistently, makes him hard to overthrow

he could actually be super athletic, that wouldn't have mattered in this case
if you get a chance to look at video of the play, he was confused as to his assignment/whether Maybin was going to rush. The guard picked up the inside man, and by the time Hills figured out what was going on, Maybin was already on his left.
Enjoyed your post
thanks for all you put into it.
