Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Post Game Observations (Steelers at Panthers)

1. Ryan Mundy opened a lot of eyes with his dominating performance.

2. K. Lewis is here for a long long time.

3. J. Burnett needs to learn how to finish off his tackles.

4. Redman's 10 yard TD run was one for the preseason ages...

5. 2 penalties from D. Johnson didn't help his cause today.

6. Anyone can tell me what the heck was J.Vincent doing in there today? He robbed good boys (Summers and Redman) off carries.

7. Harris had a sack and definitely wouldn't clear waivers.

my post game observation

is that the steelers need to petition the league for an additional 5 roster spots! i’m glad i’m not making the decisions the coaches are. and i’m even more glad i don’t have to tell these men that they didn’t make it. that’s gotta be a crappy job.

I think Vincent was in there because Redman had run quite a bit and had made all the impression he needed, I think Vincent went in because the other guys had made the team and after that all you can do is get hurt.

K. Lewis is getting it, he’s gonna play this year.

Burnett looked like Foote his rookie season, all over the place, but not in the right spot to make the play, or just missing the tackle. I think he’s shown real talent and potential and I bet we keep him.

D. Johnson is in, until McHugh comes back, then we’ll see. Penalties in games will get him off the roster in a hurry.

I think Mundy played his way onto the team, and with 4 safeties, do we keep Ratliff or Townsend? Do both go?

Don't let Steelguy read about Foote

Oh I love Foote, That comparison was about Burnett’s upside. Foote’s rookie year if he had made those tackles he kept missing he would have made the Pro-Bowl. Once he settled down he was a great starter.

I know

But he said “He has been the answer since he was a rookie unlike Timmons will always miss tackles” :)

Timmons is playing out of position IMO, he is better suited for Farrior’s role. But he is going to be a great LB.

Fox might beat him out because Fox is a natural fit for the role.

Willie Colon is a top 2 RT, if by that you mean 2nd RT, aka Backup.

Lost The Stream

in the 2nd half but my first half observations;
1) Lovin’ that I pegged Logan back in the early days of summer watching his highlights on You Tube. He looked and looks like a gamer.
2) K Fox is a stud. He may have robbed Timmons of playing time taking over the Foote role on 1st and 2nd down and at the goal line.
3) K Lewis has improved from the first week and he will be a good DB some day soon. Burnett is a play maker but made some mistakes and with a very deep roster the Steelers will try to stash him on PS.
4) Redmon runs hard but there is no room for him on the 53. Hope no one saw his TD last night. PS.
5) Mundy looked as good as he ever did last night. Don’t know if that is enough to beat out Carter or Madison.
6) Arnold Harrison looked like a beast on D searching for the 53rd spot. Again, they are so deep at LB I don’t know if he makes it with his age, injury history and tenure with Cowher not Tomlin. B Davis looked lost and even with Timmons injury may be cut.
7) I never thought I would be so happy to see Sepulveda the punter. Cursed that they used a #4 on him. Cursed that he got hurt last year and early this summer. Lovin’ that he is back. Between him and Logan the Steelers should have good field position in 09. Kiss my *ss Ernster!

wasn’t it Bruce Davis who pressured QB to throw INT into Mundy’s hands?

Bruce Davis excels at rushing the passer, and also is good at . . . rushing the passer.

He was a liability in everything else. He won’t be around.

A lot of these guys

we are projecting to PS won’t clear waivers. I’m wondering if a few veterans aren’t let go. I’d hate to see us lose, for instance, Burnett to keep Madison (stud on ST, dud in coverage).

We have a lot of youth. It would be nice to keep Burnett, but if the steelers think that Madison gives them the edge to take it to the SB this year, I’m okay with that. We don’t have that much room on our roster for projects when we have guys that can contribute now.

Except for on OL. They are all projects.

On top of that, I really don’t see anything from Burnett that will cause another team to pick him up. They would have to take him and put him on their active roster. He is not active roster material right now.

If a guy is claimed off waivers, the claiming team has to put him on the 53, right? They can’t put him on a PS.

1) Logan solidified his spot. I think he may have shown enough to become WR #5. McDonald has played well and really didn’t do anything to lose his spot, but he won’t be active on game day, unless there is an injury. Even then, it will be rare that he sees the field. It was clear last night they want to see if Logan can handle more duties.

2) Summers missed a few blocks as a FB, but I would LOVE to see him beat Carey Davis for the FB spot, because at least Summers moves the pile foward. I realize that is a longshot. He played well on special teams, but was it enough tonight to show a body of work?

3) I think Redman stated his case, not only did he have a few great runs, he made a few special teams plays as well.

4) Joe Burnett had a bad game last night. He missed tackles, got beat, and gave too much cushion to the WRs. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to the practice squad.

5) Mundy stepped up at just the right time. We are thin at safety. I’d say 50/50 on him.

6) Bruce Davis played better than he’s getting credit last night. He had a good game, put pressure on QB, but I don’t think it was enough. Woods and A. Harrison looked way better.

7) Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good for Capizzi. I’ve been rooting for him, but I have my doubts he’ll get a spot now, especially after his penalty in the last game. Personally, I think he’s better than Hills, but they have a draft pick invested in Hills. Foster, Urbik, and Legursky are locks. It seemed like Hills played a lot more snaps last night, so maybe they were sure Hills is their guy or maybe they wanted a longer look. It’s between one of them, because I don’t think Parquet has done enough to beat either one of them.

by twault on Sep 4, 2009 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

I think Logan and Redman both made the team last night. Well Logan was already on, but Redman is now on. Mundy muddied the safety question, but I don’t think he makes it.

Agreed

Yeah as of now, I mean hes violated a lot of 2nd team players. Which is still good.

But he really tore em a new one last night. I’m hoping that will translate into a few good runs in the real deal.

And sweet jesus we need Stefan Logan. Thats all I can say. I mean this dude closed the preseason with a bang. I mean when you consider just how god awful our ST was last year, on both returns and punts, imagine what we could do this year.

Sepulveda Logan for 09! I’m printing bumper stickers.

I think its a bit of a Z-snap...

Cowhers legacy was initially built on Special Teams and he always forced it, and it was usually quite good in coverage anyway.

We already had a great coverage unit last year. Add in the other elements. And yes, we could outdo cowher. Or rather, Tomlin could Outdo Cowher in less than 3 years.

im not as high on Mundy as you guys are.

I saw the game in person and I wasn’t too impressed by him.

He had that INT but it literally was thrown right at him, you better catch that. His TD was equally unspectacular because it was a clear field in front of him. However, like someone already said, its 50/50 for him.

K. Lewis should be solid.

Agree on Burnett, he put himself in position to make some nice stops but couldn’t finish.

Redman’s TD was impressive but I don’t know if it was enough.

Johnson….mmm, don’t see him making it.

Vincent was disappointing once again and I really don’t understand why he gets so many touches. He really shows us nothing, nothing at all worth keeping.

Harris also stopped the RB for a loss or no gain (can’t remember) on the play before that sack. Two nice plays in a row really get noticed.

by shleeve on Sep 4, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

I think Mundy makes it for two reasons.

1. we have no other good safeties for the fourth spot.

2. He’s athletic and big and young. He won’t make it on the PS again, someone will take a chance.

Mundy isn’t ready, and may never be a quality starter, but he is good enough and getting better as he goes, he’ll be a fine depth player.

K. Lewis had the squad made already, that game was icing. But man, he was playing out of his mind out there.

If Burnett makes this squad it’ll be for similar reasons as Mundy, young and not terrible. I hope he can make the PS, because I think he’ll be another Deshea Townsend caliber of player, and that’s a nice thing to have for the future.

Redman made a tough case, he’s a great runner in traffic, that run where he had open field and ran right at the defender betrayed his one big liability, he doesn’t run well in space. He won’t break many for big chunks, but he’s good enough in the tight spaces between the tackles to warrant a spot. It all depends on how well they like Mendenhall.

Johnson makes the team till McHugh gets back, then we’ll see. We won’t start the season with 2 TE’s and BA as OC.

Harris makes our team or someone else’s. He’s a find and I hope we don’t let him go.

I had similar thoughts about Redman’s first preseason game. It’s not that he’s bad, it’s just that particular play was nothing special. The result is great. The difficulty level was low.

(Now, Redman’s touchdown in this game… well, that’s another story. That one showed some chutzpah.)

Mundy hasn’t flashed enough for me to consider him good enough for the team. But I agree with Phantaskippy about him making the team based on need.
