BTSC Welcomes Its New 2009 Season Sponsor
Behind The Steel Curtain will have Comcast as its new sponsor for the rest of the football season. Rest easy, you won't be bombarded with an inordinate number of marketing messages from Comcast in the weeks to come. But because they are promoting their new Comcast Redzone channel, I thought it made sense to have a post per week that highlights how the Steelers did the previous week in the redzone, as well as how they're stacking up against the rest of the league when they have the ball inside their opponents' 20 yard line.
Some notables about Comcast, sent directly to us:
- Recently moved all of the major sports networks to their most popular tier of service giving it to millions more people at no additional charge, and launched ESPNU. Also offering ESPN360 to their internet customers for free.
- Comcast also has the new NFL Redzone on its Sports Entertainment Package (about $5-7) this channel is getting a ton of buzz, and fans love it. This weekend Comcast will offer the NFL Redzone for free to all of its 17 million digital customers. The ³free-view² will be available this Sunday, October 4 from 1 PM to 4:15 PM EST.
- This weekend, NFL RedZone joins Comcast¹s current offering of live sports programming, as well as NFL Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, ESPNU, MLB Network, ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, Golf Channel, Speed and Versus among others on its Digital Preferred package, and will also be available to its Digital Starter customers. Comcast¹s SEP, the usual home for NFL¹s RedZone, also includes the major professional sports networks, as well as CBS College Sports, Fox College Sports, Fox Soccer, Gol TV, the Tennis Channel and other networks.
- We also have On Demand content from the NFL network whose game recaps of every game every week, draft profiles, player profiles, etc. We also have this type of content for specific teams including the Eagles, Steelers, Bears, Broncos, Seahawks.
Many thanks to Comcast for sponsoring the site so that we can continue to provide you with information and entertainment as regularly as possible year round.
Now, on to the Steelers redzone performance this past weekend.
Week 3 Red Zone Efficiency:
3 Trips; 1 TD; 2 FG
2009 Cumulative Red Zone Efficiency:
8 Trips; 3 TDs; 4 FGs; 1 missed FG - 37.5% TD efficiency; 87.5 % scoring efficiency.

Red Zone
If you find a source for league-wide red zone stats please share it. I wasn’t able to find one when I posted on this topic earlier in the week.

I have the same problem finding team red zone statistics. I mentioned this in another thread, but the NFL should be producing a better statistic for red zone efficiency that is based on points and the intent to score (for example, some teams in the red zone are just trying to kill the clock at the end of wins, some teams such as the Steelers in Week 1 or Chicago in Week 2 are only trying to set up a FG). The Steelers have had eight drives in the red zone. That’s a maximum of 48 potential points (44 points if you count the OT FG vs. Tennesee as the maximum desired points). They’ve scored 30 points, so their overall point proficiency is 62.5 per cent (68.1 per cent with the OT FG). I looked at five other teams for comparison sake and found the Jets and Ravens are producing points at higher than an 80 per cent efficiency rate, while the Saints would also be at 80 per cent if you subtract a drive at the end of their first game when they were running out the clock. The Cardinals at 1-2 are at 62.5 per cent. The winless Titans are at 66.6 per cent. Those were the only five teams I checked, and in each case their efficiency in the red zone correlated to team performance. Obviously there are probably some exceptions and stats in general have limited value IMO, but I think a more accurate red zone statistic would generally hold up as an indicator of team performance.

oops, one mistake noticed
The total for the Steelers maximum desired points should be 45, not 44, and the subsequent point percentage should be 66.6 per cent, not 68.1.

Redzone
The way things are going with the running backs and the short yardage game, Homer expects to see Isaac Redzone on the Redzone Channel sooner rather than later. And that would probably be a good thing.

Redman
I doubt they will sign Isaac. The thing I fear most is Carey Davis replacing Stefan Logan in returning punts and kickoffs.

He's already signed... and on the practice squad....
And praticing with the team every day. Next step will be to activate him – if and when Tomlin feels he’s the one to replace either an injured player or someone not contributing enough.
I can’t imagine Davis returning kicks. What I can imagine in Logan in the slot, running some pass patterns, reverses, and other such plays. And before you say we don’t do gadget plays, I saw Logan run one or two – with my own eyes – during exhibition season.

Thank You Comcast For Sponsoring Our Site!
I must say though that I subscribe to Directv. I have great service and reception. I have the NFL package and NFL Channel. I have Fox Sports Pittsburgh and can see the Mike Tomlin show and other Pittsburgh sports related programs. It is expensive but I am happy with my purchase.
Wonder if Comcast has a similar package? If they could offer the same services for the same or less I would consider switching since they are a sponsor.

But yeah, way to go Comcast supporting the best Steeler Community on the web!
Let’s see if they can do something about the ratbird population, that would be something, those things carry disease.

I signed up for RedZone...
right after it was mentioned on this site a few weeks ago. I’m in Washington all we get are the Seahawks. Plus, our local station thinks we’re all Bronco fans, so if the Seahawks aren’t on we get that sucky team.
Had DirectTV, but got Comcast after I moved. Much cheaper, you don’t havge to signa 2 year contract and when it snows you still get reception, instead of having to climb on the roof and clear snow every 15 minutes if you’re dying to watch your show.

Does this mean...
We won’t have any more ad’s where Favre gloats about how indecisive he is? Or one’s trying to sell me Michael Jackson T-Shirts?
Don’t get me wrong, I love Favre and MJ.

Correction
The NFL Redzone channel and NFL Network are no longer on the Sports Tier with Comcast, they are now part of the Digital Prefered Package.
