Seriously though… does this post look like a bizarro fanshot to anyone else, or is it just my browser?

no it does bmf

Are you high on crack? He missed 2 games due to an injury. When he did get in there he was blocking his butt off with maybe, mabye a couple of missed blocks..but overall he showed the coaches that he comes to bring the “pain” …he’ll go to the PS in light of Redman’s emergence.
why is it that I believe you to a certain extent?

Jack
seriously though, Frank disappointed. He didn’t show me he deserves to be on the Steelers at all. one or two good plays/blocks doesn’t equate stardom
Ima hitch onto your wave :)
Most surprising
Shit, I’d be blown away if they cut Casey Hampton.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games

Thought I’d share this with you guys, for all the non “Insiders.” It’s from Len Pasquarelli’s Tip Sheet today:
Will Steelers’ Mendenhall break through?
The Pittsburgh Steelers, who have one of the best scouting staffs in the NFL, don’t often miss on first-round choices. But one has to wonder about 2008 first-round tailback Rashard Mendenhall’s future success in the league. Although he ranked second for Pittsburgh in carries and rushing yards in the preseason, Mendenhall didn’t exhibit much toughness, and some personnel men from other clubs felt he was too often a “soft” runner, a back who despite his size (5-feet-10, 225 pounds) doesn’t move the pile. He had only a 3.1-yard average in 2008, and his longest run in the first three preseason games was 13 yards. The former Illinois star, who was the 23rd overall player chosen in the ‘08 draft, seems to lean, not power, his way into the line and sometimes backs into tacklers. Mendenhall suffered a fractured shoulder four games into his rookie season and spent the rest of the year on injured reserve. He is said to be healthy now, but won’t soon remind anyone of former Pittsburgh star Jerome Bettis. All 10 of the team’s first-round choices from 1999 to 2007 are or were starters for the franchise. Six straight first-rounders from 2001 to 2006 began the team’s Super Bowl XLIII season as starters, and a seventh, 2007 first-rounder Lawrence Timmons, played a lot as a nickel linebacker. Mendenhall appears to be a tailback-type runner caught in a fullback’s body. Exacerbating the situation is that current starting tailback Willie Parker is entering the final year of his contract and can be an unrestricted free agent next spring. If Mendenhall fails, Pittsburgh really doesn’t have a legitimate heir apparent to Parker’s starting spot.

IT'S KWOOG!!!!
I guess you have to enjoy the little victories. Maybe it’ll make you even happier to know that the rest of the 2008 draft class looks pretty bad, too. Our third rounder is about to get cut, our 4th rounder would get cut if there was anyone who deserved the spot. That leaves a 3rd string QB (who’s just a complete waste with a 2x Super Bowl winning QB ahead of him), a non-promising backup safety, the un-Len-loved Mendenhall, and Limas Sweed (who drops passes in playoff games – which is a big problem for us).
I mean, if we didn’t have such good drafts in 2007 and 2009, you might almost think we weren’t set up for success for the next 5 years.

Sweet!!
Now I know that Mendy’s going to be a star! :) Last offseason, kwoog and bereadawg were talking about how the Browns were on the upswing and the Steelers declining, and all that happens a 6th SB win! ;) Awesome!

My thoughtages
I dont see Deshea going honestly. He played really well last year, won a game for crying out loud.
Big snack is gone at the end of the year. Ziggy isnt ready, and I dont think Hoke is a full time option.
McDonald I could see going, with as well as Wallace and Sweed have played. Makes room for Logan.
But I think its Frank the Tank. Redman has outshined him. I’d rather see Carey Davis go, and let Frank try to be our FB and we can groom him. But I dont see that happening.
I'd hate to see McDonald go.
I hate to say it, but Hines is getting pretty fragile. If he should miss some games, who is our possession receiver? McDonald has impressed the hell outta me – runs precise routes, isn’t afraid to go over the middle, gets separation and has great hands.
My heros have always been Steelers...
The only guy getting cut on that list is Frank Summers and I don’t see why it is a suprise. Late round draft picks get cut all of the time. Summers is no different and it would be surprising if he ever has a legitimate role for an NFL team.
thats why I listed “other” as an option

I realized that, but too late. I also don’t think Summers should be on that list. As in, I’d be surprised if any of those other guys on the list were cut, but not Summers.
My surprise cut is Kirschke.
I think your right but I don’t consider that surprise either he is old and too much composition from younger guys at that position.

Agree on Kirschke.....
The need is for an infusion of youth on the DL, and there are three first-year men that they are high on. The numbers work against Kirschke in two ways…not just 53, but his age.
his age also happens to almost 53 so that is why he is getting the boot

kwoog, what did Len P. on J. Reed contract negotiations ...
I’m wondering if the team is still trying to get something done with him on that before the season starts or if they’re just going to franchise him next year?
As far as Mendenahll, he hasn’t lived up to his press credentials yet, but the guy has only played a couple of NFL regular season games. I’d like to see how he does for an entire year before I pass any judgement. But I will say he needs to run with more power to be his size.
Here’s the part about Reed:
Steelers talking extension with Reed
Conventional wisdom is that, with the five-year deal signed by defensive end Brett Keisel this week, the Steelers, who typically don’t negotiate contracts during the season, have completed their final extension for the year. But maybe not. There have been ongoing discussions with kicker Jeff Reed about an extension, and those talks are likely to heat up this weekend. Reed, 30, is one of the league’s top placement specialists and has been particularly outstanding the past two years, when he converted 89.3 percent (50 of 56) of his field-goal attempts and had 19 touchbacks. Reed has hit 82-plus percent in four of the past five seasons. Pittsburgh is tight against the cap and can’t do much, but the club was very clever with Keisel’s extension. The Steelers reduced Keisel’s scheduled base salary for 2009 by $1 million (from $3.25 million to $2.25 million) and gave him a $5 million signing bonus, which they can prorate. So in essence, the Steelers were able to extend Keisel for the same cap number that he had before the new deal.

hey kwoog….
I’m not trying to be a jerk but please either paraphrase any “insider” content that you’re posting or just refrain from it….we have had a lot of fans who get upset that they are paying for content that they can read for free at BTSC…..
As much as I love the stuff because I am too cheap to pay for it I have to be the jerk who says “stop that”.

thanks for understanding

I am not trying to get this started again but the issue most people brought up was a moral issue regarding taking something that is meant to be purchased and republishing it for free. I don’t think it matters whether it is ESPN or Jim Wexell and the scout.com insider account. (Which I would consider in no way small time).

my thoughts
1. Townsend is not going anywhere, his experience and leadership way too valuable.
2. Redman. My thought is definitely keep the kid, not only has he earned it but will help
for him to have a years worth of experience, if we don’t re-sign FWP next year..
3. Mendy- I agree with Len. I do hope he turns it around but I have seen very little indication he will. He does have some skill, but I seen nothing to warrant a 1st round pick.
The RB situation will get interesting…do we resign FWP? At what price? If Mendy doesn’t progress do we give FWP more money? Can Redman keep progressing and in effect, do the job Mendy was drafted for? If we let Willie walk, are we comfortable with MM, Mendy, Redman and possibly a draft pick to handle RB position?
As a side note, I would be in favor of signing FWP but only to a cap friendly contract. If he starts to get higher offers, I say let him go (although I do like him). To me, it will a classic case of a guy leaving the Steelers and never really doing much with the remainder of his career.
4. Cuts are tough this year, but I think Summers goes.
Redman, J. Capizzi, A.Q. Shipley among cuts by Tomlin
This only mentions a few, but here you go:
http://insidepittsburghsports.com/story/redman-among-the-steelers-cuts/16573/
kind of sad but not surprised
I was cheering for Redman but I was cheering for Logan more. I figured if one stayed the other went. Reman will go to the practice squad however.
Shipley and Capizzi are no surprise to me either, however, again I think both will go to the practice squad.
I agreed 100% - he's a lock next year

Wow
I think it was a mistake to cut Redman…who handles short yardage, Mendy? yikes…
surprising on Redman and what do you think about your boy Capizzi getting cut…you were high on him all year datruth?

I'm bummed
I was rooting for the kid. Is he eligible to go back to PS? Not sure he’d want to. Don’t think Redman will clear waivers. Shipley should. Let’s hope.

DYMS, R. Foster beat him out for a spot ...
I’m guessing. If that’s the case, you can only tip your cap to Foster. Lolley said they had R. Foster playing LT the other night against the Panthers and that he did fine.
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over the Redman cut. He’ll probably make it to the practice squad. There will be veteran RBs out there who have put up some numbers in this league that will be cut this weekend. Teams will consider all of those before picking up a rookie free agent like Redman who was only offered a free agent contract by the Steelers and none of the other 31 teams.
This might mean that Tank makes it. We’ll see shortly.
Redman
I included him on my final roster prediction, but I’m not surprised or disappointed that he was cut. I would bet that he sticks on the PS. Borderline RB’s just aren’t that hard to come by. I’d rather see us keep Harris, Foster, or Burnett in his place.
