Sports Illustrated predicts the Pats win it all

First, I think it's great news that the SI team led by Peter King, who is almost never remotely right with his predictions, is calling for the Pats to win it all.  Chasing 19-0 again, is how they put it.  This, along with the LV odds-makers' predictions, will certainly help motivate a Steeler team that historical draws great inspiration from being counted out or underestimated.  It is just the right medicine to counter any unlikely post-SB let-down in the Tomlin era.

Second, shouldn't King be required to disclose his personal bias?  The guy was born in Springfield, MA and grew up in CT.  He regularly has picked the Pats and spends an inordinate amount of time covering them.  We all know about the natural big media bias toward New England corridor teams, but he seems a particularly egregious offender.

Finally, on the substance of his prediction, King projects that the Pats will drop only 3 games despite their top-five toughest schedule (e.g., Ravens, Falcons, Colts, Titans, Saints, Texans and the Dolphins twice), while the Steelers, with one of the lightest will drop 5.  Does anyone who isn't a Foxborough homey really understand this?  Granted, the Pats have reloaded the Death Star with Brady back in that offense, but can they really stop anyone with their defense?  Peter King called out this dangerous achilles heel when the Colts possessed it, but not when his beloved Pats do.  Meanwhile, does anyone doubt that the Steelers have the same once-in-a-decade caliber squad in their defense, but with an offensive unit that also wins games (final SB drive ring a bell, Mr. King?)?  Better schedule and better balance should produce a better record, assuming no injury problems.  I'm not sure what King is thinking.  Or maybe he's not...

Thoughts?

"but can they really stop anyone with their defense"

.
Do they really need to?
On the plus side, Respect and Kudos for spelling “egregious” and “inordinate” correctly. In the latter I always want to leave the second “i” out and add a third “n”.
But I always want to add an “i” to team, even though there’s a “me” in there if you jumble it up.

I'm just here to express my Steelerness!

oh good

i was hoping someone would step up and post about King’s predictions, the last one had already fallen off the list!

On the deline

I’m seeing the Pats on the decline personally.
Something like 9-7 or maybe even 8-8 being the third best team in the east.
And predicting Brady getting knocked out again this year for at least multiple games(4+)

It should have opened a lot of eyes on just how over-rated Brady is when Cassel was able to do what he did for them.

by Timberhick on Sep 5, 2009 11:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brady is overrated? That’s ridiculous. he won them Super Bowls with crap at WR. Brady is the reason they win. Belichick is a great Defensive mind because he gets good results from cheap players, but his offense is all Brady, The Pats were perennial playoff losers with Drew Bledsoe at QB, he wasn’t horrible. They won three with Brady and less talent on offense than Bledsoe had.

Unless Randy Moss or Drady get hurt they will be a big threat to any team. They will lose some games, and if the O-line drops off they could slip farther, but 8-8? that’s ridiculous.

Cassel threw 50 TDs and 8 INTs? He won 18 straight games?

You’re a little ridiculous.

No, you’re a lot ridiculous.

Not exactly

I can’t agree with that… fact is the Suer Bowls in NE have a lot more to to with Tom Brady, and a lot less to do with Bill Belicheck.

Funny thing is that “coach genius” had Brady sitting on the bench and would have never put him in, if Bledsoe hadn’t gotten injured. I don’t have the time to look it up right now, but Belicheck’s record with and without Tom Brady is like night and day…

I'm glad for this actually

Let them play under the radar as much as possible – they already have the SB Champ target on their backs – let someone else remain the favorite.
We generally seem to play better as the underdog, just going out and taking care of business.

I couldn't resist reading this

I really could care less about the Patriots. They are not on our schedule, and someone’s opinion of how good they are is just an opinion. Opinions don’t win games, and unless they are backed by some legitimate inside information, are pretty damn uninteresting.
I do like the guy who says Brady is overrated. I mean really, three superbowls, multiple pro bowls, and Super Bowl MVP’s mean nothing. 50 tds in a year? That’s been done in college before, right? If a college QB can do it, than how impressive is it really?

13 years and no playoff wins for the Dallas Cowboys... SWEET!

Patriots*

I respect Belicheat* and Brady despite the cheating. Belicheat* learned from Parcells, spawned a legion of coaches and won a lot of games with coaching maneuvers that were at times brilliant. When healthy, Brady has always been the M-A-N in the big games that BB was in 09. 3 rings and Giselle. Pretty impressive.

Some are stating the Pats* defense will slip this year and they are not the team that they once were. May be true but as long as they have B & B they will be a force to be reckoned with. They may very well go 13-3 this year. Maybe 12-4. They will win the AFC East and be in the Playoffs.

I think the best in the AFC will come from Pittsburgh, NE, Indy, SD, Baltimore & Ten. I think the stairway to 7 will ultimately have to pass over Cowher’s kryptonite. The perfect Hollywood ending? Pittsburgh & New England for the AFCCG. Pittsburgh trumps their demons on the way to 7 and Team of the Decade status. If in NE, all the sweeter.

Brady is overrated

He is the poster child of what a system QB looks like

by Timberhick on Sep 5, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree timber, Brady could win in any system.

by steeler.lifer on Sep 5, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Given that

McDaniels alone ran two very different systems (a ball-control run offense that gave way to the shotgun spread) I have to wonder which system he means.

by Desroko on Sep 5, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And Big Ben is a game manager.

Right.

Brady has won big games at every level. He lost the Superbowl to the Giants, but that doesn’t take away the Three he won. And knowing signals doesn’t thread the needle, Tom Brady’s arm does.

I’m no Pats fan, and I hope they fall apart and lose every game, but to say Brady is a system QB? Joe Montana would fit that description better than Brady, and he’s on the short list of he all-time greats. Brady is getting there himself, if he isn’t already.

In all honesty put Tom Brady on the Steelers through his career with the Defense and O-line we have had, he’d have three Super Bowls here too. Ben just got here to late to take advantage of some of those years. I really hope we get to face them in the playoffs, the NFL would be lucky for a game that good.

Nice post

Good job there ec but predictions are about as welcome around here lately as a lame horse in the second half of your Daily Double. But it is SI, not the Belchertown Bugle, and King has a national profile than even his sorry-ass history of doofus predictions can’t seem to shake. The fact that even the thought of chasing 19-0 occurred to King or the coffee schmuck masquerading as a headline writer is all anyone needs to know.

Predictions by Peter King or Peter Pumpkin Eater have about the same value and potential impact on anyone, as in none. As a promoter and frequent distributor of useless information I could see the Patriots winning 12 or 13 games. Brady is pretty good. The division is pretty lame. I can imagine Harrison and Woodley being in his grill all day when the Patriots come to Pittsburgh for the AFC championship game. My mind even conjures up a Willie Gay pick 6, a Santonio Holmes TD catch and two short touchdown runs by Willie Parker behind Pro Bowl right tackle Willie Colon. I can also see the headline in the Pittsburgh P-G the day after winning Super Bowl XLIIII: “Arians rides SB win to head coaching job in Oregon!”

Cues worldtrip for his famous hand clap end of discussion gesture.

The purpose of SI

is not to be right, their purpose is to sell magazines. Picking the Pats gets everyone riled up and we all go buy the magazine so we can complain about it, and we watch Sportscenter and call in to ESPN radio and complain.

You can read the storyline they are producing like a WWE episode. All the favorite/underdog status they create, and all the teams they hype to up numbers for certain games or stories. The one thing ESPN consistently shows respect for in building story lines is Steelers Nation. We don’t need to be coddled to follow sports, rip on us and we’ll show up in even bigger numbers and call in more to tell you how wrong you are.

ESPN will never hype the Steelers outside of a big game they are broadcasting, then it’s all Steeler love and franchise greatness and defense is so good. The next week our O-line is bad and Ben is average. That’s how it goes. Wear it like a badge of respect.

So I ended up going off on ESPN, SI is much the same. ESPN is just worse.

At least they're consistent

Well, when I read Peter King… funny thing is he said that the Pats would win… but I never really could figure out any reason for him thinking the Steelers would lose. He just picked them to lose to SD with no real reason.

Over at ESPN, Gene Wojciechowski, says the reason the SD Chargers will beat the Steelers because “it’s time for the Chargers to eat at the grown-up playoff table…” whatever that means.

I do care what others are saying, only because I know it has an effect. You know Mike Tomlin has mentioned this to the guys. I remember when he told the sports writers that he appreciated them ripping the offensive line because it motivated them and made his job easier.

I think it’s great.

Who wants to be picked to win it all, and then have everyone shrug when the season is over and say: “Well, of course, Everyone knew you would win…”

This is better.

Every Monday

the website KissingSuzyKolber.com dismembers King’s column and his monumental douchebaggedness.

It’s always the high point of my Mondays. Definitely worth reading, if only because it exposes Peter King for the worthless, braindead, smarmy, self-satisfied twit he is..

Patriots go 0-16!

Who’s with me?!

This is Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu getting knocked around by the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii yesterday...
Minutes later, Troy caught the ocean going over the middle and smacked it right in the mouth. The ocean fumbled, Troy recovered and ran it into the endzone. The ocean never messed with Troy again.

I am

But my buddy from Boston would lose all hope in sports. How about missing the playoffs to the Dolphins? Or Sanchez and the Jets. Sounds a little more plausible.

Every year its the same story.

OMG the Pats are the best….Belichek is the best…blah blah blah. But one thing has been proven, the Pats have consistently killed our SB dreams in the playoffs. It’s great we beat them last year, but the media will never respect the Steelers until we throttle the Pats in a playoff game and win the SB. Until that happens the media will always pick the Pats.

by Silverback92 on Sep 6, 2009 7:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Now I'm a Steelers fan and I hate the Pats but...

Tom Brady is THE Quarterback of his generation. I’d take him over an QB in the league and I really don’t think it’s possible to over-rate him. He has outstanding vision, a great arm and ice in his veins.

But I think with the question marks on their Defense Brady and Moss are going to need career seasons for the Pats to win it all.

As for strength of schedule, as long as you make the playoffs I’d rather have the tougher schedule. It’s better preparation for the playoffs than a powder puff schedule.
