Thanks for this post. I was searching Google News and couldn’t find anything.
Anybody want to Volunteer and write down our Official Roster here?
I’m too tired/lazy. I had to work today.

tired/lazy/stupid
All You Had to Do Was Go to the Steelers Homepage Instead of This Web Site.
Select Roster.
All Players Listed for You!

At the time of this post there was no news on the Steelers cuts anywhere on the web. The first site I found that posted anything was the Steelers Homepage at www.steelers.com This post went up about 3 minutes later with the link. At the time of this story breaking, the Steelers roster had yet to be updated on their website.
This info was posted on Behind The Steel Curtain after the Steelers Homepage but before the Post Gazette, Tribune or ESPN. This website scooped those others.

See the time-stamp?
This was posted almost a full day before you happened upon it. Did you ever stop to think that maybe this was new when it was posted?
Thanks for describing yourself in the subject line. Now we don’t need to ask.

Right
And our IR includes the Stapler and McHugh.
I like it so far. I’m glad that carey Davis and McHugh are gone. They were like the worst FB’s ive ever seen. Heres to hoping we Power-I it down peoples throats with the Tank plowing lanes for FWP.

+1
love what I’ve seen of Johnson so far. Got to trust the coaches on Tank.
by SteelerBuddha on Sep 5, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
why the hate for McHugh?
first off, he was a TE first, not fullback. He can and did play fullback but his position was TE. Also, he was/is cheap and came out of nowhere to make some nice plays for us. I like McHugh, not sure why people are hating on him.
by shleeve on Sep 5, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also a McHugh fan, but I think Johnson is an upgrade at blocking, and they aren’t throwing to these guys so that’s all that really counts.
by Phantaskippy on Sep 5, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It wasnt hate on McHugh, its hate on the use of McHugh
I never liked the way we used him. Its not that I had a problem with him persay.
But I know Arians would have continued to use him in the way I hate.
Therefore, I wish him the best, but I’m happy to know I wont have to suffer with his and davis’s misuse.

McHugh went to high school with my buddy.
So I rooted for him. I thought he did a great job considering he came out of nowhere to make our roster last year.
I look forward to Johnson taking Spaeth’s job as #2 TE. I have faith that he won’t be physically overmatched by everyone he faces.

With Mchugh on IR, AQ on PS and Paxson cut
there are officially no more Nittany Lions on the team. That sucks :(

Is it possible they are still working a trade?
I'm just here to express my Steelerness!
by Concomitandt on Sep 5, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Possible, but...
At this point, all of the players that were cut are exposed to waivers. If we trade, for example, Eason for a draft pick, that would open up a roster spot for Sonny Harris, but we can’t resign Harris until after he clears waivers. If another team claims him off waivers, we are out of luck. So the best time to make a trade is before cuts, not after.

Initial Roster Thoughts
Thanks for the roster Phantaskippy. After letting the 53 sink in;
1) Someone mentioned in another thread about Donovan Woods injury coupled with Timmons condition opened the door for Harrison. Totally agree with that. That said, as much as I didn’t think AH would stick because of his injury history and age he played real good all preseason and distinguished himself as a guy that can step in on a limited basis if need be. Also think Woods passes waivers due to injury and is on the PS. He will spend some time on the 53 man roster this year due to inevitable injuries.
2) I think Burnett will dress on game day over K Lewis and Mundy because he is a play maker on ST with great speed. Burnett was impressive the entire preseason when not PR. Mundy was impressive against Carolina and beat out A Madison with that performance along with his ability to play S. Think they are grooming him for Clarks spot in 10.
3) You all know Logan has been my guy since April. I will be the first one off the band wagon if he puts the ball on the grass but for now I am excited about the return game. Also hoping Whiz left a couple gadget plays that BA can figure out for Logan on O as a WR. Logan is my early pick for Steelers ROTY.
4) Wonder which DL doesn’t dress? They are deep with 90 & 93 but don’t you want to get Ziggy some PT? Did Ziggy do ST in preseason?
5) Been all over Sweed’s lunch since he dropped a couple sure TDs in playoff games after contributing little all year. That said, he flashed some skills during preseason and I am ready to wipe the slate clean and say Go Limas! Still think McDonald can be the sure handed 3rd receiver but wonder with Logan active on game day, how many WR dress?

Re: Burnett
My only issue with him is that he missed a bunch of tackles. He has good speed but took poor angles and overestimated his ability at times. Still I think you are right about his speed. The guy is a burner and he ca be coached up.

Sorry to nitpick
but I don’t think Logan can be ROTY because technically he is not a rookie, having spent time on (I think) Miami’s development squad.

Ike Redman a Brown ?
The Browns cut one more player than they needed to, thus leaving an open roster spot. Anyone want to bet that they don’t sign Ike Redman at 6:01 tomorrow evening.

Upon Further Review
If they claim him off waivers they don’t have to wait 24 hours. This is a real possibility, but if it happens it’s not the end of the world(trip).lol

Waiver claims are in reverse order of record
So Detroit gets the first crack, followed by the Rams, etc. I don’t know how long each team gets before they pass on each player, but it may take some time (hours?) for Redman to work his way through to the Browns. Of course, they could be saving that roster spot for some other player, or no one in particular. If they don’t find someone they like on waivers, they can just resign the last guy they cut. It’s not like any other team is going to be signing Cleveland’s 53rd guy.
Bottom line is, we won’t know which of our guys clears waivers for a few days.

Roster comparison versus 2008
Based on Skippy’s list:
QB – Big Ben, Batch, Dixon
Batch replaces Byron Leftwich, who replaced Batch when he went on IR.
RB/FB – FWP, Mendenhall, Moore, Summers
Frank “The Tank” Summers, a 5th-round pick, replaces Carey Davis. Mendenhall is back from IR, replaces Gary Russell.
WR – Ward, Holmes, Sweed, Wallace, McDonald, Stefan Logan
Dallas Baker is gone as Steelers add speedy #3 pick Mike Wallace, crafty veteran Shaun McDonald, and return specialist Logan.
TE – Miller, Spaeth, Johnson
7th-rounder DJ Johnson replaces Sean McHugh, who is on IR for the season.
OL – Starks, Hartwig, Colon, Essex, Kemo, Legursky, Foster, Urbik, Hills
Marvell Smith and Kendall Simmons are gone after spending most of 2008 on IR. Jason Capizzi took Smith’s roster spot last year but is also gone. Super Bowl starting RG Darnell Stapleton is on IR for 2009. Essex will start at RG after being our top backup last year. 3rd-round pick Kraig Urbik and UDFA Ramon Foster join the squad, and Doug Legursky is promoted from last year’s practice squad. A lot of changes for the weakest unit on last year’s team.
DL – Hampton, Smith, Keisel, Hoke, Kirschke, Eason, Hood
Steelers replace the aging Orpheus Roye with #1 pick Ziggy Hood.
LB – J. Harrison, Farrior, Timmons, Woodley, Fox, Frazier, A. Harrison, P. Bailey
2008 starter Larry Foote is gone as Lawrence Timmons takes his place as a starter. Bruce Davis, a 3rd-round pick in 2008, is cut. Arnold Harrison and Patrick Bailey were both on the active roster at various times in 2008.
DB – Polamalu, Clark, Carter, Mundy, Taylor, Gay, Townsend, Ratliff, K. Lewis, Burnett
Much-maligned Anthony Smith is replaced with Ryan Mundy, promoted from last year’s practice squad. Sometime 2008 starter Bryant McFadden is gone, with William Gay taking on the starting CB role. Street free agent Fernando Bryant and special-teams standout Anthony Madison are gone, replaced by ex-Colt Keiwan Ratliff, 3rd-round pick Keenan Lewis, and 5th-round pick speedy Joe Burnett.
ST – Reed, Sepulveda, Warren
P Sepulveda was on IR last year, replaced (sort of) by Mitch Berger. Warren was also on IR for most of the season, replaced by Jared Retkovsky. It’s good to have both of them back.
MY TAKE: McDonald provides excellent insurance in case of an injury at WR. Ziggy is a clear upgrade over Roye. Ratliff is an upgrade over Bryant. Logan is a huge upgrade over our returners last year. It’s great to have Sepulveda and Warren back. And the O-line can’t be any worse than last year. :-) I just can’t see how this team is any worse than the team that won the Super Bowl in February.

Great breakdown
Having our Special teams brought back to full strength, PLUS having a return threat gives me a field position wood….
Ratliff is a good pickup, and Lewis showed promise.
This team has the R word written all over it. The one that rhymes with pete.

field position wood
that’s hilarious…
But I’m with you. We struggled a bunch last year with field position…but having such a stellar D got us out of a lot of jams. Imagine what we’ll do now with, IMO, a better defense and better special teams…on top of that, a better return game and (IMO again) a better offense.
I’m so stoked.

Only part I would challenge
Is that our OL can’t be any worse than last year. I am frightened by two things this season: 1) We didn’t keep future HOFer Redman and 2) That we are DANGEROUSLY thin at OL.
The only managing Ben does is he manages to WIN games
by chewiesteeler on Sep 6, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Great break down
It really seems that we a better team on paper then last year – by unit my analysis:
QBS – Even – Lefty better than Batch, but Ben is Healthy and Dixon more experienced.
RBS – Better – Mendy develops and Tank should not be a drop off from Davis and may be a step up.
WRS – Much Better – probably the biggest single jump for a unit. Ward still looks good, Holmes developed, Sweed ready to take the jump, Wallace – unproven, but looks to take the top of as well if not better than Nate – McDonald – great insurance policy. Logan and Wallace allow much more creativity with gadget plays that were essentially gone last year.
TES – Even – but I do love Johnson, remains unproven but if he can block as well as he did in the preseason he will boost the short yardage game.
OL – Better- like the development on some of our players and the guys we lost were essentially on IR most of the season. Having said that we are completely unproven behind the starters. Promising young guys can look like turnstyles when they have to go in mid-season against a good D. Essex looks to be an upgrade and communication should improve.
DL – Even – Starters stay the same, Ziggy should be an upgrade in the energy department, but you have to believe that Smith and Hampton might be starting to slow down ever so slightly.
LB – Even – Timmons should be an upgrade over Foote. It remains to be seen if he will be. The depth suffers a bit from the loss of Timmons, but the development of Fox seems to make up for it.
DBs – Even – Loss of McFadden is serious, but Gay seems to be able to step in and play. Ratliff looks legit. Overall very good depth with good potential from the young guys.
ST – Much, much better – Sepulveda and Logan can add up to enormous difference in field position from last years. This went from a serious weakness to a potential strength.
by SteelerBuddha on Sep 5, 2009 9:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
nice analysis
I’m not so sure that batch is a drop-off from lefty though – he looked super sharp last week, and a bit more mobile than lefty. haven’t watched Thursday night’s game yet…
by acrollet on Sep 5, 2009 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Truth is
If Ben is down during the playoffs neither Lefty nor Batch would be able to get this team to go where it should go. But I think Batch is a better team leader and very stable – I think Lefty probably has more talent. Didn’t get a sense of Batch’s mobility or lack thereof.
by SteelerBuddha on Sep 6, 2009 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
agreed, Lefty is a starter now.
Not better than Ben, but better than Batch. I am glad we have Batch though. I think he is one of the better backups in the leauge.

I do however think that Leftys leadership skills are under-rated (after watching all the 2008 DVDs I have)
by shleeve on Sep 6, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah,
Charlie hasn’t really impressed me in regular-season action the last few years. When Ben destroyed the Ravens in MNF a few years ago and left the game early, Batch came in and got knocked around in a conservative game-plan.
by Desroko on Sep 6, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but that was mop-up duty
He probably handed the ball off twice each drive and then had to try to complete a 3rd and 12 or something.

Agree but...
LT backup position is weaker, we went from Essex and Hills to Hills and … or move Essex and everybody on the line, and the interior backups of the OL have no experience to make that move.
ILB backup Position is weaker, we went from Timmons and Fox to Fox and Arnold Harrison? (he played mostly as OLB)
ST Gunners are unproven, we went from Madison, McHugh and Carey Davis to Burnett, Johnson and Tank.
Blitz pickup is unproven, we went from Moore, Davis and McHugh to Moore, Tank and Johnson. Although the FB position is greatly improve, picking up blitzes requires experience.
Agreed WR, FB, DB depth, Essex as starting RG, Sepulveda and Logan are the major improvments in this team.
All in all I like this team better on paper than last year team.
by mikemex on Sep 6, 2009 5:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Despite Essex being the starting RG, if one of our tackles go down, Essex would slide into that position and one of our backups would take the RG position….at least that’s the way I’ve heard the guys on ESPN 1250 describe it.
Oh speaking of ESPN 1250, Bettis said that the Steelers have become a passing team and are no longer really a run first team. Anyone agree with that?

In the Arians offense we are multi-nondimensional. On any given day we can be a mediocre running team or a mediocre passing team.

Batch is a guy who can come in with a lead and preserve the win, he’s a guy who can give the rest of the team a chance to win a game with Ben out. He’s also a guy you definitely don’t want leading the team for more than two weeks.

Feel really good for Fox and Harrison who are both first time captains.
I Think Fox will end up playing a bunch this year if he impresses against Ten with 94 out. If he looks good he could pick up many of the downs that Foote played last year.
Harrison is growing into the leadership role that Farrior, Ward and Ben currently occupy. Unlike Peazy Deebo is a quiet assassin.
