Possible solution to NT woes
I was thinking about it and looking through our roster. I see that Sonny Harris is about 321 lbs. He's probably about 10 lbs. lighter than Hampton. If Hampton doesn't resign, maybe we could start him out at NT in practice and see how it goes. He's got similar size..not monsterous, but decent. We could draft another DE to groom and see how it works out. If worse comes to worse we still have Hoke and there is alot of NT coming out in FA. Thoughts?

Sonny is not 320
The Steeler website, ESPN and this site have him listed as 6-4 300. I looked at his weight from the 2009 draft. He was 298. Yahoo Sports is wrong.

NT
Harris is viewed as a de it could be either Sciott paxton or Steve Mclendon who get a try at NT
if we don't resign the big snack.
Lets run a 3-3-5. Its kinda like a 3-4 just with one less Linebacker in the line up, we just have to put Troy up at the line the whole game and find a good #3 Corner and hope Ryan Clark learns how to play zone coverage
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: DIck Lebeau, Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

after we find a good #1 and #2 corner
Snack is essential, he is our only true NT that can stop the run and command double teams. Hell, he even sneaks through for a sack a couple of times a year. We need to franchise him and use this years draft to find his eventual replacement.

Well one good thing about the 3-3-5 is that it has made good players look great(Mundy)
and it has made great players into first rounders (Pac-man). You can do a lot out of the 3-3-5 and with the signing of Derrick Dogget we could have him play up on the LOS and have Troy play a deep center field safety position with three corners filling out the defensive secondary. Also with this formation you basically have the same personel on the DLine as you do on 3-4 but they are more than just run-stoppers and guys that take up blockers. The linebackers play like a hybrid 3-4, 4-3 linebackers in that they are able to rush the passer, drop into coverage or play the run depending on the situation. After saying that I think we could run it next year and be successful while doing it

One less linebacker on the field?
Linebacker is the strongest and deepest position on the team. Cornerback is the weakest. Why are we taking a linebacker off the field and adding another cornerback?
well instead of having a true linebacker you have a Carnell Lake hybrid Safety-Linebacker
thats up at the line playing where the fourth linebacker would be and putting an extra speed guy out there in the form of a corner. The 3-3-5 is a formation that was designed to stop spread offenses that have started to take over college, so It wouldn’t shock me if it started showing up in the NFL sometime in the near future

Mays fits that bill...
Hybrid, like carnell lake!

Timmons
is a lot faster than many realize and could probably play a ccrraaazzzyyyy kind of hybrid LB/S at 6’1"/234.
That might be why they have played him inside instead of outside the last couple years.
WVU has had enormous success with the 3-3-5 the last few years and i think it would translate perfectly to the NFL’s new passing focus in general and the Steelers in specific.
you can have Timmons and Farrior rotate depending on the situation if need be
and you still have the ability to rush the passes with Harrison and Woodley while just confusing the hell out of the oposing offense, which leads me to the question why didn’t coach dad try this earlier

Personnell?
Or maybe he wasn’t allowed to completely revamp the D. Hard to say. But IMO it would work wonders in the pros under Coach D.
Carnell Lake
was the exception, not the rule. That guy was a Pro Bowl safety AND corner, who could also hit and tackle. That, my friend, is extremely rare.
I don’t think we have anybody on the roster right now (except, maybe, for Troy) who has any combination of ball and tackle skills that Carnell Lake boasted.

True, but troy is not as big as Carnell Lake

while I'm not sure it would work...
I would love to once again be one of the only teams running an odd base formation. The 3-4 was/is great but the rest of the league is beginning to take all of our diamonds in the rough, it’s hard to find Porter and Harrison in the later rounds and as walk ons these days. It would be nice to start using undersized LB’s with speed. Only I fear our run defense would suffer greatly in a 3-3-5, plus I want to see Troy off the line, he’s got such a nose for the ball.
it never got weird enough for me
you can move troy to a deep safety spot and bring up a bigger guy like that Dogget guy we signed and really the only way the run defense can suffer is if you don’t have guys that can tackle at your speed positions like Corner and the Hybrid Safety-Linebacker that you have instead of a true LB

John Mitchell Himself
said that Harris is a NT and DE
with that in mind and hoke on the roster, even if casey leaves I think that they won’t draft a NT first round depending on how they feel about Harris plus you got other guys they’ve had their eye on.

I’ve said this in a couple of comments/replies. Not exactly, but the point is the same.
I think that they won’t draft a NT first round depending on how they feel about Harris
They should just let Snack hit that big payday (candy bar), and go somewhere else, and let Sunny develop under Hoke this year. Rotate the line every down, give the O something to think about. Let Ziggy have a play or two over center as well.

Agreed
In that case they would probably draft a DE in one of the later rounds maybe 3/4? But that is fine with me. Lets focus our energy on getting a good S another CB who is big and could fill in at S in a pinch, and a ILB to replace farrior.

Fox has done exceedingly well
when he has been in there for George Burns-I mean Farrior…
Yes, Defense is/should be our first 3 picks in the draft, but not line.

Fox has done well
and I think Arnold Harrison is good too. But then again Gay looked good last year in limited action. The transition to starter was not kind to him. I don’t know if the same wuold happen to fox but the coaches should know better. If they draft high ILB then you can bet that those guys are deemed not good enough to start. But I remember reading something about them signing both Fox and Harrison promising them that they will have a shot at starting one day. but we’ll see

10 pounds lighter than Hampton?
I don’t care what they had him “listed”, Hampton playing at 335 is as likely the fact that Bettis was listed at 255 his final season (sorry folks but 275 was more like it). Harris weighed 310 when he visited the Steelers and has a big frame. This is the scouting report from Sporting news last year:
“Strengths: Has good size; is a load at the point of attack and tough to move. Shows ability to plug the middle on runs right at him.
Weaknesses: Shows poor endurance and motor. Lacks mobility and agility. Is not a playmaker. Shows extremely limited range.
Bottom line: Harris has a huge frame that makes it tough to create movement against him, but is currently nothing more than a spot player because he’s in poor shape and lacks the athleticism, motor and agility of big run-stopping nose guards in the NFL. However, he performed well enough during the week of the East-West Shrine Game that a team will likely take a late-round flier on him with an eye toward developing his raw talent."
He ran a 4.88 at 6’4", 297 lbs and bench 225 lbs 28 times. The kid has potential at NT. You do not need to weight 360 lbs (my guess as to Big Snack’s actual weight) you just need to be able to hold at th epoint of attack and take on double teams.
"The superior man blames himself. The inferior man blames others." Don Shula
Its not so much the weight
but the weight helps you hold that attack we all know momemtum is p=mass * velocity, the more mass the more momentum. The less mass the more velocity you must possess, you’re not gaining much velocity at the line where you only have about half a foot of distance between you and the person in front of you trying to stop you so you need the mass. That being said if he already can hold the point of attack then he may not need it as long as he is fast enough to compensate for his weight.

I don't think...
….there’s too much to that scouting report. I saw him a couple of times playing for Oregon he anchored pretty well and got a good push occasionally and of the things I liked, his mobility and his motor, I once saw him pursue Cal’s RB Best 50 yards, the safety TJ Ward(who’s a very good Steeler prospect) forced a fumble and he was first to the ball and recovered, got up and took the next snap.
What he doesn’t have is pass rush skills.

casey hampton said himself that his weight is a lie, and that all great nose tackles lie about their weight.
my guess is that so other teams cant target players of his weight
The general impression...
…seems to be he was under 350 this year, down 30 or so lbs.
