Does anyone remember why we let Kreider go?
I started thinking about it yesterday when I saw him in the Arizona-New Orleans game. Was he injured? Was his contract up? Did BA just not want a classic FB on the team? If I remember correctly, he did not start the 07 season with us (Tomlin's first season) and was replaced on the roster by Cary Davis.
What would you give to have a Tim Lester/John Witman/Dan Kreider blocking for Rashard?

I think his contract was up, but don't quote me on that

I love that shadow quote!
I’m going to use that one with my fellow coaches, but not in front of the players!!! Good job WV! And by the way, Arians hates fullbacks would be my answer to that question, even though Kreider’s contract was up…

I'm just going to assume that one of your player can't block either

Dude you have no idea
The guy is built like a house and is softer than microwaved doggydoo. I swear the guy is 6-4 295 pounds and our walk-on linebacker who weighs 185 pounds bullrushes him into next week 10 times out of 10!!!

Where you at SteelFrog?
I’m a HS coach in NoCal.
I don’t get why BA (and the offensive staff?) seem to love TEs but not a FB. A guy like Kreider or similar body type can line up at a 2nd or 3rd TE or H Back position if you want to use them as such. Chrissakes, Spaeth is about the weakest NFL TE I have ever seen. The guy is soft and slow – not a good combination. Funny enough, I was really rooting for him since I had his little cousin on my HS squad in 2008. The guy looks like a real squid out there unfortunately.

I'm in Quebec
As my nick implies I’m French-Canadian (Quebecer) and my school is a cross between a Prep School and a Juco. Our kids are 17-20, typically. We play Canadian rules (12 players, bigger fields, unlimited motion on offense) with four downs. Darn near impossible to defend, but we’ve adapted and we manage.
As far as Spaeth goes, I hated the pick (I wanted Jay Alford or Charles Johnson) then, and I don’t like the player now. Although he has improved somewhat this year, I don’t think he’ll ever be a good blocker and he’s done nothing for us in the passing game. To think we could have had LeRon McClain only makes it worse!
Consider it unleashed!
How did you become a Stillers fan?
Are you originally from the US or have you always been in Quebec?
From what little we see of the CFL, a lot of it has become shotgun, wide-open pass game with multiple motions. Has the spread option game caught on up there like down here in the CFL or HS/college ranks?

Born and bred in Québec
But I’ve been a Stillers fan since I was a kid; I was a huge Mean Joe Greene/Jack Lambert fan growing up and my HS coach was a Penn State alum, so Pennsylvania-style football was always with me.
We’ve had the spread for years before it became fashionable in the States. The nature of the rules and the size of the field has always made the spread more attractive here. In our league we run the ball more, though, because of the four downs; we see a lot of different offenses and most of them run a multitude of formations. In our team’s offense we use a lot of shotgun zone-read out of our 5R package (5 receivers and one back next to the QB in the gun) as well as more traditional I formation double slot. Defensively we run a multiple front (43/52/34 Hawk) with 5 DBs. The name of the game up here is adjustments because teams have one extra receiver and can motion everybody before the snap…

He's right for 2007
He was beat by Davis in 2007 because of the shift in offensive philosophy, special teams are another story. It was said at the time that Davis brought more athleticism to the position, if I recall. Of course that’s coachspeak for we’ll have no more blocking fullbacks. He became a free agent the year after that and signed with St-Louis. He got cut late in the season then in 2009 he signed with Arizona.
Consider it unleashed!
some non-sense I heard
was that he wasn’t fast enough to block for FWP. Couldn’t get to the hole in time?

+1
I think it is one of those shirts a girl wears where there is no cloth on the back side, so you can see her “full back”.

Agree with the above and...
He got injured in 2007. I believe he tore an MCL or ACL during the season and the Steelers didn’t re-up with him in the offseason going with Carey Davis and 17 TE’s on the roster instead.
One thought that I have on the full back in the Steelers offense is what our base offense should be…
I remember Swissvale did some quality analysis on “Base Offense”. I’m of the opinion that our base offense should be 3 WRs with Hines, Tone, and Wallace, 1 TE (Heath), 1 RB (Mendy). With Ben and the o-line we have our offensive set. This allows for the most playmaking on the field at one time. Defenses would be forced to spread out to account for it thus keeping only 7 in the box. We can still run out of this and if memory serves Swissvale showed the numbers saying we actually were most successful in our running out of 3 WRs.
All that said, I’m fine with no fullback. If we had less at the skill positions I would prefer to have the hammer, but as it is David Johnson seems to be doing a pretty good job in my mind.

What about short yardage
You need a FB when you have shortyardage plays or want to run out the clock in the 4th quarter. What about those games when BB gets dinged and can’t hit the broadside of a barn door. Just keep throwing it ’till you get 3-4 picks? Come on somedays BB is great, somedays he sucks. When he is off, we need the FB to run the ball. 5-10 265 and can block is what we need.

That Legursky thing
worked pretty well.
Can’t imagine why we never saw it again…
Becasue it worked
If BA saw something work with the running game, we could not do it again or else why would we need to pass the ball on 3rd and 1. In my honest opinion, I am convinced that BA is an idiot.

Meh
Again, if you can have someone like David Johnson who can run it like a hybrid and line up at TE as well the versatility helps open up roster spots for kick returners like Logan or Rossum.
I’m not again pounding it from time to time, but I think that having a dedicated fullback on this roster is counter-productive. Use the Big Legursky, or one of the d-tackles can lead the way like you’ll see Ngata do for the Ravens. If all you want is a big agile body back there we have people that fit that bill that don’t pull a roster spot just for short yardage duty.
I continue to think that BA’s much better at being an offensive coordinator than any of us.
